1 UMKC Track and Field Friday, April 3, 2009 This Week In Kangaroo Track and Field Kansas City, Mo. -- The Kangaroos are hoping for good weather this weekend and are looking to compete in their first complete meet this weekend in Emporia, Kan. UMKC is set to take part in the Emporia State Relays on Saturday, April 4. Field events will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the women s pole vault and the running events will get started at 11:00 a.m. with the women s 100-meter hurdle prelims. UMKC took part in the Missouri Relays last weekend but were only able to participate in the first day with day two of the meet getting canceled. Freshman Shines in First Collegiate Meet Kimoya Hariott competed in her first meet as a Kangaroo and took first in the women s javelin with a mark of (36.90m). The freshman s mark lands her in the UMKC outdoor record books as the fourth best performance in school history in the women s javelin. Kangaroos Record One Champion and Top-10 Finishers at the Missouri Relays UMKC competed in day one of the Missouri Relays and emerged one champion and four top-10 finishers. Kimoya Hariott competed in her first meet as a Kangaroo and took first in the women s javelin with a mark of (36.90m). Due to the inclement weather, day two of the Missouri Relays was canceled. Also placing in the top-10 on the men s side was Brad Chesney and D.C. Okonta in the men s long jump. In their first outdoor competition, Chesney finished ninth with a mark of (6.07m) and Okonta finished 10th with a mark of (6.03m). Anthony Boyer was set to advance to the men s 110-meter finals with his fifth place prelim time of Aubrey Frederking also competed in the javelin and finished ninth with a mark of (27.95m). Lee Rules Jumps at Summit League Championships Marcus Lee continued his dominance in the jumps at The Summit League Championships and was the gold medalist in the both the men s long and triple jumps. Lee took first in the long jump on day one of the championships with a mark of On the second day, he earned a gold medal in the men s triple jump with a mark of Lee received all-league honors with his two first place finishes. At the conclusion of the indoor season, Lee had broken one school record and provisionally qualified in the triple jump. At the Mule Relays, back on Feb. 7, Lee jumped for the school record and a chance to compete at the NCAA s. He also landed on the UMKC top-10 indoor perform list in the long jump at third with his mark of , also recorded at the Mule Relays. All Day Lopez Has Breakout Indoor Season Sophomore Alex Lopez had a banner year in the 2009 indoor season which included bringing home the silver medal at The Summit League Indoor Championships and breaking a UMKC school record. Lopez landed on the awards podium for the men s 800-meter run with his time of 1:54.97, earning a silver medal and all-league honors. 1

He crossed the finish line eighth, clocking in at 1: Top Performances in the Indoor Season Samuel Sullivan posted a season and career top-time in the men s 60 meters back on Jan. 17 with his 10th place finish at the KSU Invitational. Sullivan clocked in at Keenan Simmons finished with the top UMKC time in three events this season, the 200, 300 and 400 meters. Simmons finished second at the Wildcat Invitational with a time of in the 200 meters on Jan. 31. He finished the 300 meters at (14th place) in the first meet of the season at the Iowa State Holiday Preview and ran in the 400 meters at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 14. All times are career-bests for Simmons. Alex Lopez led the Kangaroos in middle distance action with the top times in the 600-yard run and the 800-meter run. Lopez clocked in at 1:15.02 in the 600-yard run at the Mule Relays on Feb. 7 for a sixth place finish. The sophomore had a big meet at the Iowa State Classic when he broke the UMKC school record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.23 (eighth place). Daniel McKenzie owns the top times for the Kangaroo men in the mile and 1,000 meters. The senior, one-of-eight, ran 4:36.15 at the Central Missouri Classic last weekend for an eighth place finish. McKenzie posted a time of 2:43.63 in the 1,000 meters back in Jan. at the Missouri Invitational. Laban Mutai is the top-time holder in the men s 3,000 meters this season. The sophomore recorded a career-best time of 8:57.65 at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 13 for a seventh place finish. Mutai is coming off of a successful cross country season, he finished ninth at The Summit League Cross Country Championships and received Second Team all-league honors. Marcus Lee is the leader in both the long and triple jumps for UMKC. The transfer from Barton County (Kan.) C.C. has proven to be a powerful force not only at UMKC but also in The Summit League. Lee finished with a career-best mark of in the long jump at the Mule Relays (Feb. 7), recording a first-place finish. He truly shined in the triple jump though, when he recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with his jump of , also at the Mule Relays. Lee also broke the UMKC school record in the event, knocking off Deandre Free s mark of 50-05, set back in Headed into The Summit League Women s Indoor Final Poll Rank School Points 1. Brad Chesney owns the top mark in the men s high jump. The true freshman posted his careerbest height of this past weekend at the Central Missouri Indoor Classic. Jennifer Dopplick is the lone hurdler for the Kangaroo women this indoor season. Dopplick s top time of the year in the 60-meter hurdles is 10.57, set at the Iowa State Classic back on Feb. 14. She has been the only participant in the women s pentathlon this season for UMKC, scoring 2,243 points. Brianna Marshall is one of the top sprinters for UMKC and holds the fastest time in the women s 60 meters. At the KSU Invitational on Jan. 17, Marshall ran for a fourth place finish, clocking in at Anuola Bailey ran in her first meet last weekend and posted the top season time in the 200-meter dash. Bailey crossed the finish line at and took first in the event at the Central Missouri Indoor Classic. Sakia Taylor holds the season-best times in the 300 and 400 meters. Taylor ran the 300 back in Dec. and finished second in the Iowa State Holiday Preview with a time of The freshman s career-best time of was good enough for a second place finish at the Central Missouri Indoor Classic. Taylor currently holds the three fastest times on the year in the event. Etagegn O Neill holds the season-best times in the 800 and 1,000-meter runs. O Neill set a new personal record in the 800 on Jan. 31 at the Wildcat Invitational, clocking in at 2:23.19 for a third place finish. Alex Harkins is the other leader in the women s distance, posting top times in the mile and 3,000 meters. Harkins ran the mile in 5:15.38 at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 24, finishing 11th in the event. Her 3,000-meter run time of 10:47.29 was good enough for a third place finish at the Wildcat Invitational on Jan. 31. Katherine Williams has the top marks in the women s long and triple jumps. Williams recorded her top lengths of the year in Feb. and at Central Missouri meets. She placed seventh at the CMSU Indoor Classic with a jump of and took 11th at the Mule Relays at Kathryn Tenkku holds the top season marks in both the high jump and the shot put. In the high jump, Tenkku hit at the KSU Invitational on Jan. 17 for a third place finish. She competed in the shot and posted a season-best mark of the same weekend, taking 12th in the event.
