Under her current ownership, now for more than 10 years, she has been almost entirely rebuilt - but absolutely in character and keeping with her DNA. Her winning Best Maintained Swan at the Swan European Regatta in 2005 inspired Nautor Swan to reclaim and re-fit Hull No 1. In the Classic Yacht Section of the 2008 RTI Race ICON got the gun for 1st over the line. With a pedigree combining the best of S&S and Swan, ICON not only lives up to her name but her impressive condition makes her totally ready. 2 HERITAGE, VINTAGE AND CLASSIC YACHTS +44 (0) SWAN HISTORY The 36 set the tone for Nautor s Swan, a name recognized among sailors as makers of some of the best production boats built. The yard s founder, Pekka Koskenkylä, had approached Sparkman and Stephens in 1966; then working on some design projects in Finland. His idea was to build a yacht in the 10 metre range to be strong, seaworthy and fast enough not only for cruising but racing - also to build in GRP, which method of construction was then in its relative infancy. Without the full length keel, the Swan 36 stands somewhere between the classic and a new generation of design thinking. She still retains moderately long overhangs and a deep bilge yet her hull has a pronounced tumblehome with a pointed diamond shaped plan profile, which was becoming popular in RORC racing designs of that era. CLASS HISTORY NOTE Introduced in 1967 the first Swan 36 delivered to British sailor Dave Johnson, whose racing successes around the UK stimulated a good reputation for Swan as a make. He commissioned Desty Marine of Hamble to ensure that her hull should be faultless then proceeded to carry out significant works throughout - including the refixing of the teak decks, new port lights and hatches and new water and fuel tanks. Other key items were: - New rig, slightly taller than the original Kemp supplied - and fitted by Selden Masts, including standing, running rigging and a new main traveller system - Hull repainted with Awlgrip and coach roof with International stippled effect deck paint - Hull repainted again in 2008 with Awlgrip 2 Snow White, cavita line and boot top in Awlgrip Flag Blue.
