A major restoration from 1993 fitted her for a new phase in her life, taking her from Europe to New Zealand and back again to Cannes where she is regularly raced by her current owner. Unusually for this class NATICA is fitted with an engine, enabling her to position herself for regattas, mindful of summer light winds in the Mediterranean as well as giving her a measure of flexibility for cruising. 2 HERITAGE, VINTAGE AND CLASSIC YACHTS +44 (0) WEST SOLENT ONE DESIGN SLOOP NO Specification CLASS HISTORY NOTES Originally built as the "W Boats" these elegant thoroughbred yachts; one of the first production cruiser racers were adopted by a number of yacht clubs around the English coast including Lymington, Torbay and Burnham. A total of 32 boats were originally built for the UK. A further five were built and exported to Argentina as the Los Indios Class - and one was built under licence in Bombay. They have participated as a class in a number of regattas around the UK until the 50s whilst their distinctive classical lines sometimes earned them the nickname of "The little J-Class". A resurgence of interest in the class in the 90s particularly around the East Coast of England resulted in a number of boats being restored sympathetically to the early one design rules but using modern boatbuilding techniques to solve some of the fundamental structural problems of the original boats. Some others are currently under restoration or awaiting new owners seeking projects. In 2010 the lovely new WINNIE MARIE W-39 was launched. Whilst the current fleet is somewhat scattered, a number do regularly participate in regattas and local races, whether in classic events or racing to IRC - or local handicap amongst modern race boats where, given the right conditions, they can carry away the silverware. Highlights of their season are the Levington Classic Regatta in June and Mersea Week in August. Fully restored from 1993 to 1995 by classic boat builder and restorer Philip Brookes in England NATICA was then shipped to New Zealand, where she was sailed in private ownership until she was subsequently bought by her current owner - who shipped her back in a container, arriving at Chantier Dettori at Seine sur Mer in September NATICA is definitely a racing boat kept in Cannes she can be seen racing there. Fully restored in 1997, she has an inboard engine.
