Her rig is now Bermudan yawl rather than gaff, making her a remarkably easy boat to sail. Extensive refits in the 1980s attending to her structure - and more recent updates to her interior and systems render her more than ready to carry on sailing! 2 HERITAGE, VINTAGE AND CLASSIC YACHTS +44 (0) ALFRED MYLNE 49 FT KETCH 1920 Specification HISTORY Originally called LA BELLE POULE and designed by Alfred Mylne, this boat was built in 1920 by the Wessex B & SC at Hamworthy, Poole. By 1922 she had changed her name to GUDGEON and presumably changed owners. By 1925 she had come to the East Coast where she has spent most of her life. In 1936 she was owned by Alban Culmer who kept her on the Deben and the Ore and Alde, at Orford. She was looked after by Whisstocks Boatyard at Woodbridge and during his ownership she was re decked. He passed her to the Webb family in 1955 and she remained at Orford. During their ownership as the men in the Webb family were rather tall, the accommodation was remodelled to designs by Peter Brown of Woodbridge; a very tall doghouse and fore hatch. In 1965 she was at Salcot owned by a Dr Dixon who had her until 1968 when she passed to the Bibby family and she moved to Tollesbury. By 1985 she was out if the water at Priors and in very poor condition but Peter showed her to his friends Mary and Alan Reed who negotiated to buy her and in 1986 she came, by road to Aldeburgh. A four year restoration followed with a new stem, quite a lot of reframing, some new planking, complete redecking and remodelled accommodation with new coamings, cabin top etc. The original mast was split and re glued, a pencilled note inside it recorded that this was last done at Tollesbury. She had new rigging, sails and almost everything else. She was then sold to Scott Yeates who took her to Suffolk Yacht Harbour. In 1976 she was owned by actor David Blagden and featured in a BBC television programme called Plain Sailing, who apparently sailed her to the Caribbean and back.
