1 THE STORM TRYSAIL FOUNDATION HANDS ON SAFETY AT SEA SEMINAR SANCTIONED BY U.S. SAILING The purpose of this seminar is to teach you as much as we can about Safety at Sea in as short a period of time as possible. Some of what you ll learn will be taught in a classroom, some will be taught aboard a boat or in a swimming pool, some will be taught by actually doing what needs to be done (putting out a fire for instance). Finally, some will be taught at home by watching special teaching videos produced by U.S. Sailing or long time Storm Trysail member Gary Jobson. LEARNING VIDEOS: Let s start with the video part of the program. Approximately 6 weeks before the seminar, you will start receiving instructional videos. These videos vary from a few minutes in length to over twenty minutes. They cover a variety of subjects from weather to storm sails to man overboard procedures. They will each have a series of questions at their conclusion and our goal is for you to be able to answer those questions with a good understanding of subject matter. We expect you to view all the videos at least once but we hope you ll use them more than that. They will be available to you for two weeks after the seminar date.

2 THE ART OF SEAMANSHIP: When you signed up for our seminar, we offered to provide a copy of The Art of Seamanship at the wholesale price of $ This book, written by world famous sailor and Storm Trysail member Ralph Naranjo, is the official textbook for the seminar and it s a book that everyone who plans to go to sea should read. If you have ordered a copy, it will be mailed to you promptly. If you haven t ordered a copy, I urge you to reconsider. WHAT TO BRING TO THE SEMINAR: The seminar will be an all-day affair, much of which will take place outdoors and on a boat so let s start by saying you will want your cold weather sailing gear. Even though the sun may be shining, the water in April is still cold. Bring your inflatable PFD and tether too if you have one.

3 Next, you will need a change of clothes and a bath towel because you will be going swimming. If you have a second set of old foul weather gear, I recommend bringing that to swim with. The purpose here is to weigh you down and make the training more realistic. Although we try to schedule your sailing time before your time in the pool, that is not possible for everyone attending and if you swim first, your gear will be wet. You will be asked to take a brief shower with your foul weather gear on before going into the pool. This is to minimize the effect on the pool water chemistry. We will provide you with a plastic bag for your wet clothing. REGISTRATION : The registration desk will open at There will be coffee, hot tea and breakfast pastries available. 5 SEMINAR SCHEDULE: Registration Opening Session First Class* Second Class Lunch Third Class Fourth Class Closing Session * Attendees will be divided into four groups and rotated through each of the four class sessions. WHAT WILL I BE DOING DURING THE SEMINAR? The major topics to be covered during the seminar are: Man Overboard/Storm Sails/Emergency Steering This session will take place on a boat and will include storm sail usage, emergency steering and man overboard prevention and recovery techniques. You can expect four to five MOB rescues.

6 Damage Control Damage Control will be in the capable hands of personnel from Brewers Yacht Yards. The session will commence with a classroom lecture by Moderator Rich du Moulin and be followed by practical and hands on demonstrations of a number of emergency fixes such as cutting away your rig, patching a hole in your hull and emergency steering. Firefighting and Pyrotechnics This session will start with a classroom lecture on fire prevention, firefighting and the various emergency pyrotechnics and their usage. It will be followed by an outdoor session where you will actually extinguish a diesel oil fire and then ignite and fire different emergency pyrotechnics.

7 Lifejackets, Life Rafts, Hypothermia and in-the-water Survival This session takes place in the pool. You will experience what it s like to be in the water when your PFD is your only friend. You ll swim fully clothed and then climb into a life raft. Your will learn the best ways to stay afloat and fight hypothermia. CERTIFICATION: This seminar is a sanctioned U.S. Sailing event. All attendees will qualify for a U.S. Sailing Safety at Sea Certificate. However, for those planning to go offshore, we strongly recommend full ISAF Safety at Sea Certification. To qualify for this advanced ISAF certificate, you need to take the brief online quizzes on the five US Sailing videos and the final online quiz after completing the seminar.
