The Chowder Chatter Newsletter of the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society A Premiere Sailing Club of Southwest Florida Next Full Moon: June 30 June 2007 COMMODORE Bev Duff AHOY THERE! These days we are all passing each other on the water ways as we re heading in different directions. Even the cruisers seem to be reflecting the herding instinct of cats! We have a couple of cruises heading out this month not counting the members who are cruising the Bahamas and other parts of the Caribbean. Ron Maddix (IX) is helming the group heading for the Tortugas the first of June following the Danger Island Memorial weekend. Understand a few may just head out from Memorial festivities to get a head start. Anyone thinking about an offshore cruise of a week or so needs to get in touch with Ron and Shirley for details. It s always a great time whether weather is cooperating or not for those looking for a little gulf experience. The Burnt Store Cruise in mid June for those who have less time or just want to hang out at the pool will be lead by Bob and Bev Duff. I m sure after my extended trip assisting to bring Passion III home, I ll be thinking A/C and cool drinks, though I dearly love just hanging on the hook the most. This Cruise begins Thursday June 13 th headed f/ Burnt Store and back to the docks by the 17 th of June. Any questions or suggestions give Bob a call at (his Office). The Racers have a less exciting June with only a couple of club races scheduled and the wind down of the active BOYD season. Oh well, just gives us time to get the boats in shape for Summerset Regatta ~ tune the craft and the crews. Speaking of Summerset ~ now is the time to put those plans into action. The Committee has worked very hard to make this year s Summerset Regatta the best ever and we want everyone to participate. There is something for everyone. We all know the old adage ~ 2 boats sailing on the same direction is a race and 3 boats make a Regatta. The cruisers can race to Naples on Saturday and even around the buoys on Sunday. By the way, looking for a few hurricane survivors to talk about prepping our boats for the coming season. Would like to put together a panel discussion at the June meeting (June 19 th ). That s open grill night and I m sure sharing our experiences and adventures will give all of us something to chew on for the evening. The sea! the sea! the open sea! The blue, the fresh, and the ever free! B.W. Procter, The Sea Bev

NEW LOCATION! SUMMERSET Southwest Florida s Largest Regatta August 30 through September 3 Sail the Tradition VICE COMMODORE Forrest Banks Summerset continues to advance. The invitation proof is back from the printers and one set of trophies is on the way. Ads keep coming in. Support Summerset with your entry and CMCS with your boat name on the tee shirt sleeve. I read a great issue in this months Sail Magizine. "Cruisers go Racing" It explains how simple it is to race and the reasons for doing it. Read it and come to the August meeting and you will be all set to go. CMCS did well in t the Key West rendezvous. Roger Horton won cruising class going down and single handed back the next day. Eric Soronen won multi hull coming back. Joel Andrews won third in spinnaker beating a new C&C 115 and the vaunted Tippecanoe. He and two crew for kicks even sailed with a spinnaker to the Naples start and then all night with it to Key West. We won spinnaker down and back. As I read the Sail article I thought of us 15 years ago when we hardly knew which end was forward. Attention Summerset Sailors It's Time for all Summerset Racers and Cruisers to book a room at the Bayfront Inn on 5th in Naples, if you are not staying on your boat. We have booked 30 rooms for Saturday, Sept. 1st and Sunday, Sept. 2nd...some with a water view and some with a city view. If you plan to stay at the Bayfront, you must call , ask for reservations and tell them you are with the CMCS Regatta. All rooms are either double or king and the rates are: Water view...$ City view...$ Deadline for reservations is August 1, You must give them your credit card info when you call to reserve. Any questions, just give me a call. Elise, Summerset Sidekick SUMMERSET IS ONLY 3 MONTHS AWAY. NEED A SLIP? Whether you re racing, cruising, or working as committee boat, those who are going to need slip space should give Bob Gerry a call as soon as possible. It is always a problem for those who want to stay aboard as Naples' city ordinances do not permit doing so behind peoples' homes. Naples City Dock ( ) will accept reservations 90 days out and usually on that 90th day, CMCS members have reserved all of the transient slips. Naples Sailing and Yacht Club, where we have the banquet, can accommodate up to a four foot draft and they have a limited number of slips. Naples Boat Club fills up fast and usually with a bunch of Sea Rays. Thanks for your attention to this matter. Bob Gerry

RACE REPORT: The month of May was a bit light on racing for most CMCS boats, however the race we did conduct was a good contest of twenty miles in a stiff NE breeze. This Estebel Race was a departure from tradition in that it was day race instead of an evening/night race. This race was held without benefit of a committee boat and yet started between markers 3 & 4 off Ft. Myers Beach with few problems. the racers proceeded to round the sea bouy and head west to a GPS point without a true mark and thence returned to finish at the start, if that makes sense. My thanks to Bob Duff for hosting the skippers meeting. RESULTS : True Cruising 1. Chase the Clouds, B. Duff Illusion, D Prohaska Rex, I Davis : Non-Spinn 1. Air Supply, S Romaine Sand Dollar, D Naumann Bentley, T Horner :Spinnaker 1. Judy, T Gore REAR COMMODORE RACING Joel Andrews : Multihull 1. Rapture, J Kremski Anhinga, R Libbey Elsewhere, Roger Horton sailed in a Sarasota sailing Club regatta on 12, May and brought home a second in True Cruising Class. Roger gets around! Elsewhere also, The Naples-Key West Rendezvous saw a meeting of three CMCS boats at the Conch Republic. Two of the three won their class. Yes, Forrest Banks and Midnite Rider crew scored a convincing win spinnaker class as well as taking fleet honors. Roger Horton on Wiley Coyote took top place in True cruising and third in fleet. Macushla rounded out the trio with a spinnaker third. This race was sailed in moderate reaching conditions which made for a very pleasant night. Forrest was so jazzed by this victory that he repeated his win in the return race to Naples by over thirty minutes. Outstanding job! The Ladies Day Race has been moved to Sunday, 10 June. It is expected that every Female and maybe a few ladies will all show up and take charge. Well, take charge of the boat and thereby completing domination of men. Women only on the helm giving orders to cross dressers is encouraged and will be filmed for posterity. The post race party will be hosted by a gracious Ms. D Fowler. Please come and enjoy. The summer solstice brings us the Sunworshipers Race on 23, June. Bring sunscreen and celebrate. 4 Greetings from the Bahamas. By the time you get this column, we will be four weeks into our planned six week trip. The weather has been unusual, but we are having a great time. We had a great night crossing from Key Largo to West End in one hop to beat what became the first named storm of the season. We left during the day so we could see our way through the reefs and we arrived around 11 am the next day. We sailed about 100 miles of the 150 mile passage. Just in case you are interested, Cingular and T-mobile phones work extremely well over here in fact they work just like you had bought a local phone. Globalstar satellite phones don t work at all. Wireless internet is readily available. With a good external antenna, you can use the internet right from your boat whether at dock or at anchor. REAR COMMODORE CRUISING Jerry Canning There are three cruises scheduled for June. June 1-10 brings the annual Dry Tortugas cruise. Ron Maddix has again agreed to Captain this trip. Watch for additional information from Ron. There were two cruises since the last Chowder Chatter deadline. The 2007 Tampa Bay Cruise, and the Danger Island Cruise. Unfortunately, I do not have any information on how either cruise went. I hope that the Tampa Bay cruise is the subject of a separate column by the cruise directors. I know Russell will have an article on the Danger Island cruise for the next Chowder Chatter. The second cruise is scheduled for June at Burnt Store Marina. I am grateful that Bob Duff has stepped forward to lead this event. Look for more information from Bob at a later date. This is a new trip for the club. Activities at the marina include an on-site restaurant, work out and tennis facilities, a pool and a spa. Dock fees are $1.50/foot. Club members and Burnt Store residents Jim and Beverly David have graciously volunteered to host the group for a pool party at their house during this trip. The final trip for June is the annual Franklin Locks trip scheduled for June 30 to July 4 th. This trip will be headed by the Vances. Rum Daze won t fit under any of the bridges, a situation that impacts others in the club, so the alternative we are taking is to take our trailer to the campground along with our dingy to participate in this fun trip and dingy tour. I again want to express my appreciation to the Cruise Directors who are heading these events. This job would be impossible if it wasn t for their help. See you on the water! 5 TAMPA BAY CRUISE This writer, new to the club, was wondering if indeed these folks were sailors or just a crazy group of people who liked to eat and enjoy cocktails!!! The Tampa Bay Cruise of '07 was a huge success with a total of fifteen boats participating along various legs of the journey. "Shadowfax", "Sea Puppy", and "Katiekat", anxious to begin, left early and spent Saturday night anchored off Useppa Island. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset and happy hour aboard "Katiekat" where we unabashedly joined their guests who had bought a cruise via a school auction. I think they thought Russel and Mel may have been pirates! Sunday night found us at Cape Haze. Deedee and Tim Cheek served hot dogs with all the trimmings after a lovely cocktail hour aboard "Blank Check". Cruisers stooped to an all time low even for C.M.C.S. with the advent of a rousing game of "Butt Darts", yup that's right, Butt Darts...which was won by the inspiring Cindy Carlino. The following day we dingy'd to Don Pedro Island and enjoyed a breathtaking view of the pristine beach. At sunset Mel and Ray gave the official captain's toast for the cruise. May 1, not to be confused with mayday, delivered us safely to "marina Jack's" in Sarasota where Tim Stier played guitar and entertained us with his beautiful voice. It had been a long day with "Wa-wa" experiencing some mechanical problems and a death defying tow by "Sea Puppy" and "High Heels" near the Venice bridge. Roger landed them at a private dock with the grace and ease of a world class ballerina. Undaunted, Fran, John, and Jody pulled into port last that night, tired but not beaten! The following day "Island Time" joined us at Desoto point where we regaled in cocktails aboard the mother ship with Mary and Waite. The next morning we weighed anchor and sailed up Tampa Bay to St. Pete. We enjoyed hot showers and a swim in the pull at the "Harborage". It should be noted at this point that we had not had a gust of wind thus far. This writer, new to the club, was wondering if indeed these folks were sailors or just a crazy group of people who liked to eat and enjoy cocktails!!! Little did I know that just around the bend I would soon find out the answer. Friday found us at the Tampa Bay Blues Fest where the sun was hot, the beer ice cold, and the music rocking! We enjoyed a second day in this visitor friendly city that boasts a wonderful farmer's market, great restaurants, the Dali museum, not to mention a.25 cent trolley to get you around town. We left St. Pete and went to Longboat key where a large group of us enjoyed a great meal at Moore's Crab Shack. Sadly for Mel, it was NOT the last night of stone crab season. We left there in the morning and headed for Venice where we enjoyed a pot luck meal at the pavilion at Higel Park. The following day, the winds picked up...indeed. We found ourselves in the gulf with seven foot waves and winds clocked at 28 knots. Caroline and Ben took a large wave in their cabin, Mel's dinghy was ahead of his boat, It was blustery and wild!!!!! Exhausted and exhilarated we pulled into anchorage off Useppa Island where "island Time" awaited us with a final cruise cocktail hour. Sadly the next morning we left to return to our "real lives" vowing to do it again at the first opportunity. We covered miles from Sea Puppy dock. Thank you to everyone who participated...windy City, Sea Puppy, Island Time, Wa Wa, Air Supply, Wings, Shadowfax, Kestril II, Fidelis, Miller Time, Lazy Susan, IX, Sea Isle, and High Heels. Loree Minks and Mel Rudd, Sea Puppy

LADIES BRIDGE CLUB Suzanne Aguilera CMCS women getting together to share and promote sailing skills and camaraderie. The Ladies Club Day Sail on May 12th was cancelled because everyone seemed to be doing something else that Mother's Day weekend. The ladies will get another chance to strut their stuff on the water, however, on June 10th at the Drag Queen "Ladies Day" race. This race will be coordinated by our Racing Guru, Joel Andrews. (Look for Joel's announcement). The Ladies Bridge Club does not officially meet again until September. However, this summer many of us will be working on getting the CMCS cookbook completed in time for the holidays. Don't be left out of the book --- get your recipes in by June 19th. Happy sailing! Suzanne Aguilera, Coordinator Ladies Bridge Club Mark Your Calendars!! Our next race will be June 10th, Sunday, noon skipper meeting and one pm start -$10 entry fee, $10 for a club boat - let me know if you want a club boat so I can reserve one for you!! SUNFISH GURU John Kremski Our last race was May 6, had eight boats come out to play. Thirteen year old Chalmers Pierce did an excellent job as race committee. Chalmers normally sails Club 420sat the Edison Sailing Center Youth Team, and knows and understands what we need on the water - fires off the races quick, keeps the line and course reasonably square to the wind, and times the starts accurately. Notwithstanding losing his pencil after the third race, so we have no scores, but we DID have a really great day. Nice winds, pretty shifty to keep it interesting. The adult learn to sail class was out for their first day on the water in the sunfish just before the races, so maybe after a few more classes some of those folks will stay all day... Hope to see a nice turnout on the 10th, getting out on (and in) the water is a nice way to spend a summer afternoon! If you want to participate, but not sail, let me know and we can get you out on the RC boat, too. John Kremski, CCIM Direct: FAX

PASSAGES Follow our members as they set out on cruising adventures. I long for the solitude of a sunset at sea, and the chill of the breeze coming in with the eve. For the motion of my boat as she swings on her rode, and the beauty of the stars in the evening s last glow. From Will & Susan Burton aboard S/V Far Niente FINAL EDITION part 2 We did all our errands in Cancun (Wal-mart, Hong Kong restaurant) and Isla Mujeres on Monday afternoon. Tuesday morning, Will went to check out while I got the cabin ready to travel. After fueling, we left at noon and had the sails up by 12:45. The wind was coming from the southeast at knots. The sails were up and we were flying. At this rate we calculated arriving in Fort Myers in about 60 hours. Then our joy was dashed. We lost the manual steering on the boat about 8 hours out. Thankfully the autopilot was attached to the rudder. After losing our autopilot on the way to Isla Mujeres, we were very concerned that the same thing could happen again. Will put up the emergency tiller which was not ideal. It would mean he would have to stand on the roof of the aft cabin, holding on to the tiller and bimini support structure. Not very safe in 20 knots and 6 to 8 seas. We de-powered the sails and slowed down considerably and continued to sail with the autopilot thru the night. We don t carry enough fuel to motor the entire way, so we were keeping our fingers crossed. We didn t cross them hard enough. The next morning brought sun and light winds which started to clock to the east. Will got on with the NW Caribbean Network and reported our situation. They alerted the US Coast Guard just in case we needed them and took our emergency family contact information should they not hear from us at next check-in. Another boat (Lightfoot) was heading to Fort Myers about miles away. He changed course to move within 20 miles of us. He was able to radio back and keep us updated on wind and current as we moved forward. He also had extra fuel on board in case we needed it. We monitored our fuel situation very carefully, tracking how far we traveled every hour, how much fuel we used, the engine RPMs, etc. Thursday evening we decided to take a north heading. The wind was still coming in from the northeast and doing nothing for us. At least heading north we had some help from the wind, motor sailing at about 5+ knots. Around 17:00 on Friday, we checked the fuel situation again and decided it was time to turn to Fort Myers. We were 79 nautical miles away and we knew we had at least enough fuel to get us to within 25 miles of the coast where TowBoat US would deliver fuel. We had no help from the wind, but did get a bit of a push from the current. We arrived off Fort Myers Beach at 10:00 Saturday morning. Well before the cold front was forecasted to arrive! We did have TowBoat US tow us to our slip just in case the winds decided to come up. Of course they didn t. With the tow, Will on the emergency tiller and me on the throttle, we slid right into the slip. We were HOME! Tanned and tired, thrilled with the trip, new friends, and experiences. Looking forward to seeing old CMCS friends and planning our next sailing adventure, hopefully somewhat wiser for what we have learned. WELCOME HOME WILL & SUSAN From Ned Christianson aboard Passion III Hello, Last week I made my home at anchor into a sailboat and sailed around the local area. I visited several anchorages, and while at Megans Bay, I finally found a place to anchor that was actually a good one! While looking at a picture of Megans Bay, I noticed a shallow area toward the west side, and decided to check it out. It turns out that there is a huge area of sand that ranges from 9 to 14 feet deep. Excellent holding, and large enough to accommodate several other boats at anchor. So I finally dingied to shore and walked the beach and saw first hand just how pretty that beach is. No wonder so many people frequent this great beach. While at Rendezvous Bay I did lots of snorkeling. This is a really great place to see all kinds of sea life. In addition to dozens of star fish in varying colors, and the hundreds of fish, I swam over two rays! Pretty interesting if you are into snorkeling. While I did some good things last week, I also did a really gigantic screw up! For the first time in 16 years, I forgot to wish Janette a Happy Anniversary! Just how dumb and forgetful can one person be? Hopefully Janette will forgive me for this grievous sin. Hope you are all doing well, and remember; ATTITUDE: the difference between an ordeal and an adventure. Ned, Passion III 8

From Ned Christianson aboard Passion III Hello, This past week marked a historic event for St. Thomas. The Queen Mary 2 was finally able to make port and tie up at a dock here in Crown Bay. St. Thomas now numbers among only three or four ports where the worlds largest cruise ship can dock. Dredging was finally completed in the channel so that docking could take place. Entry and exit must still be completed via the West Gregori Channel, because the dredging out East Gregori Channel is not completed. I motored the dingy out and watched as the huge ship motored up the channel. From the back, the ship does not look all that big. But from the side, that ship is huge! The docking was assisted by a tug. Just to be safe I'm sure. Also, last week the 96 foot aluminum ferry, American Pride, was cut in half and removed from the reef. The ferry was loaded on a barge and taken away. I think for scrap. Damage to the reef is believed to be extensive, and as of this date no fines have been assessed against the ferry company. Unfortunately, the ferry remained on the reef, being battered by the wind and waves for near three weeks. Return date for us on Passion III will be on May 17th. Crew will arrive on the 15th and 16th, so preparations can take place for the trip. I'll pass along more information as it is available. Ned, Passion III CARNIVAL! Dancing in the streets, food and drink everywhere, music and...rain! While the rain is badly needed, the timing is really bad. Two days ago St. Thomas had a total of 10 inches of rain in one day. The steel drum bands were scheduled to perform that day. I'm not sure whether they did or not. I stayed on the boat. Later in the day...at a lull in the rain, I bailed about 50 gallons of water out of the dingy! The day before, only about 30 gallons of rainwater. Today, in between showers, the streets are jammed with people drinking, dancing and listening to the music being paraded by on large trucks. The music is recorded, and the speakers that the music is played on are huge. Besides the few people on the truck beds, the beds are covered with the gigantic speakers. I was able to hear the music from the anchorage almost two miles away. Sitting here in the internet cafe, the place is almost vibrating. I intend to have a great time watching people today! Just over a months time, and we will be pulling into the dock behind the house in Cape Coral. Time seems to be passing rather quickly now. Maybe it is an illusion for me, but it sure seems that way. Take care and have fun in your lives, Ned Passion III & more PASSAGES CMCS SHIP S STORE Coozies $2 or 3 for $5 CMCS bags $15 Burgies $15 Croc Sailboat Buttons $3 Pins $1 License plates unframed $5 License plates framed $10 CMCS T-shirts $10 Ladies Bridge Club t-shirts $10 CMCS tank tops $8 CMCS hats $15 Special order shirts $25 *See info in classified section CMCS SHIP S STORE SALE ITEMS Summerset 2005 black bags $2 License plates framed $5 (small blemishes) Summerset 2005 t shirts $2 Summerset 2006 t shirts $2 CMCS wine glasses $2.50 Items are available at most club events.
