This width makes her particularly special because her Cowes-based designer then used it in conjunction with her commissioning owner s healthy budget to create a sumptuous interior with true, deep settees and fine sideboards. Add time in the ownership of Maurice Griffiths and a long and settled period of restoration and loving care as the cruiser and mobile studio of one our finest marine painters, Martyn Mackrill, Honorary Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron, and NIGHTFALL becomes a very attractive proposition for ownership of an Edwardian gem. 2 HERITAGE, VINTAGE AND CLASSIC YACHTS +44 (0) FT HH LIDSTONE GAFF CUTTER 1910 Specification HISTORY NIGHTFALL, was built at Oulton Broad, Norfolk, in 1910 by Frederick Miller to an auxiliary shoal-draft cruiser design by Cowes, Isle of Wightbased naval architect Harold H Lidstone. Originally named NAUTILUS, she was constructed to a high price for the time ( 610) by a yard used to orders for fine ship's boats (in particular for London and Wivenhoe-based steam yacht designers, Cox and King) as well as yachts and Norfolk Broads hiring cruisers. Miller's daughter Philippa ("Pippa") became a much loved Broads artist. Relatively unusually for the time, NAUTILUS was fitted from new with a 6hp single cylinder 2-stroke petrol auxiliary motor made locally by Boulton & Paul, later better known as aircraft builders. It was offset to port in the cockpit, belt driving a central shaft with a very modern aperture sited propeller. "These little ships are as desirable as the moon, and about as elusive - bless 'em!" She then changed hands twice prior to the second world war, belonging to a Dr. Gordon Grenville and a Major Shackell who used her until the early 1950s. She was then purchased by a yard and refitted internally as a speculation and sold to a Mr May. In 1961 ownership passed to a Mr AF Braithwaite and a syndicate from Hertfordshire who gave NIGHTFALL a major refit. Then Mr Morrison bought her in 1970 and cruised in Holland on the Ijsslemeer, and around the Dutch Friesian Islands. In 1984 her current owners, Martyn and Bryony Mackrill, became NIGHTFALL's ninth caretakers, sailing her true to her original remit as far as Brittany and back to her birthplace - and as a mobile artist's studio. Her commissioning owner WD Silcock of Waveney Sailing Club, Oulton Broad, wanted a finely fitted yacht capable of being sailed comfortably by him and his wife on both inland and coastal waters, and that is how she has continued to be used by a succession of owners to the present day. Her second owner, from 1931, was small boat designer, writer, journalist and luminary, Maurice Griffiths - and so we are afforded a remarkable insight into NIGHTFALL, as Griffiths renamed her, and the fine condition he found her in twenty one years after her build. In the chapter devoted to NIGHTFALL in his 1933 book 'Ten Small Yachts and Others' - written on board, along with 'Magic of the Swatchways' - Griffiths describes her in great detail, along with the thrill of becoming the owner of such a finely fitted out yacht.
