2 Great Arley School Health & Safety Policy for Science and Design Technology. Procedures for pupils, staff and visitors working in the practical areas of Food & Textiles, Resistant Materials and Graphics and Science. Teaching Staff Only subject-qualified staff can carry out practical activities. In the event of a teacher s absence, only non-practical activities can be carried out, preferably not in the specialist room/ area. Subject specialists should ensure that pupils, staff and other people using the specialist area must adhere to the Health & Safety procedures specific to each area and those of the whole school. Reinforcement of procedures should take place as appropriate. Teaching Assistant TAs will support the teaching staff and pupils to ensure compliance with all Health & Safety procedures Pupils Behaviour- all pupils must comply with the school Behaviour Policy, the Health & Safety procedures of the school and those procedures specific to each specialist area. Use of tools and equipment- pupils must not use or touch ANY equipment without permission from the subject specialist. All pupils will receive training, from the specialist teacher, in the correct use of equipment, all Health & Safety procedures specific to each area and safe working practices. All such training will be recorded in weekly plans. Procedures Accidents and Emergencies Whole school policies will be followed in the event of a fire, accident or emergency. All incidents will be reported to SLT. 1. Accidents involving pupils. If an accident occurs and First Aid is required, this will be administered by a qualified First Aider in school. A First Aid kit is kept in the DT workshop. All

3 accidents involving pupils are reported following the correct procedure and recorded in an accident log in DT and in the main accident log in the school office. Tools and Equipment Storage of Equipment and Materials Each subject area to store equipment and materials according to LA guidelines. Annual electrical checks carried out by LA approved contractors, all DT workshop equipment is tested twice a year by the LA approved contractor- Schools Workshop Services. LEV equipment is tested, checked and certified annually by a LA inspector. Regular checks of equipment carried out before and after pupil use and when necessary and recorded in the equipment log/ machinery checklist. All faults to be dealt with accordingly and faulty equipment is not to be used until repaired or replaced.

4 APPENDIX 1 Food and Textiles Technology Procedures and practices within the classroom to comply with Lancashire County Council guidelines (Health and Safety in Design Technology - Food Technology 2005). Safety Assessment Audit to be carried out during the Autumn and Spring Terms for Food Technology and the Summer Term for Textiles Technology. Teaching Assistants TAs to be trained in the use of equipment specific to Textiles and Food technology e.g. sewing machine, food processors. Heath and safety issues will be central to the training, which may be given prior to lessons as appropriate, on-going during lessons or as separate INSET. Pupils Behaviour Pupils are not allowed in the FTT classroom until accompanied by the teacher. The FTT classroom is kept locked when not in use. All new pupils are informed of this, pupils are reminded of the policy and they do not enter the room without permission. In addition to school rules, pupils follow procedures specific to personal safety and food safety. Use of tools and equipment Pupils to be taught and reminded frequently of the safe and correct use of equipment and appliances. Pupils to be supervised on a 1-1 basis when using electrical equipment. Oven gloves to be provided for use with ovens and microwaves. Procedures Storage of Equipment and Materials Knives to be stored in the equipment storeroom and counted before and after use. Textiles scissors and needles to be counted before and after a lesson and stored in the cupboard when not in use. Procedures for the storage of food items - in compliance with LA guidelines. Cleaning

5 Cleaning staff wipe down food preparation surfaces and sinks using anti-bacterial cleaner and cloth supplied by FTT. Classroom floors and cupboard floors cleaned on a daily basis. Further cleaning before practical lessons begin, to be carried out be TA. Dishcloths and tea-towels to be washed and tumble dried daily. Ovengloves to be washed as necessary. Aprons to be cleaned after use. Pupils carry out everyday cleaning tasks during practical lessons and additionally learn how to care for appliances. Tools and Equipment All equipment to be checked for faults whilst in daily use. Safety Assessment Audits to be carried out in accordance with LA guidelines.

6 APPENDIX 2 Resistant Materials Technology (RMT) & Graphic Products (GP) Procedures and practices within the workshop to comply with Lancashire County Council guidelines (Health and Safety in Design Technology 2005). Teaching Assistants TAs are trained in the safe and correct use of tools and equipment specific to RMT and Graphics. Health and safety issues will be central to the training, which may be given prior to lessons as appropriate, on-going during lessons or as separate INSET. Pupils Behaviour Pupils are not allowed in the workshop unless accompanied by the teacher. The DT workshop is locked when not in use. All new pupils are informed of this, pupils are reminded of the policy and they do not enter the room without permission. In addition to school rules, pupils follow procedures specific to personal safety and safe working practice whilst in the workshop. Specific workshop rules are posted around the room as reminders to pupils. Health and safety rules are reiterated at the beginning of each new project on a half-term basis and if a new pupil has joined the group. Use of tools and equipment. Pupils to be taught the safe and correct use of tools and equipment and reminded each time tools and equipment are used. Pupils will be supervised on a 1-1 basis when using specific equipment ie. Drilling m/c, sander and all heat treatment of metals eg. Casting. Procedures Storage of equipment and Materials All tools are stored in lockable cupboards and pupils do not enter these without permission. All tools are counted before and after being used. (Equipment Checklist- see Appendix 2a) All equipment is unplugged when not in use. All tools and equipment needing power are kept unplugged and the power supply is not switched on until being used. Power switches are padlocked and the main

7 power switch is key locked. Pupils are not allowed to plug/ unplug equipment or operate any power switches. All materials are stored in a locked store room. All hazardous materials are stored in a locked store room. Cleaning. Pupils clean any mess made during the lesson and tidy away any tools and equipment. The floor is cleaned by the cleaning staff. Tools and Equipment. All equipment to be checked for faults whilst in daily use. (Machinery Checklistsee Appendix 2B) Safety Assessment Audits to be carried out in accordance with LA guidelines. Equipment is checked, tested and certified 6 monthly by School Workshop Services. Electrical equipment is tested annually by LA contractors/electricians. LEV equipment is tested, checked and certified annually by LA inspector. APPENDIX 2A

10 Science Storage of chemicals Chemicals are stored in the prep room and inside locked cupboards (there are 3 of these). Oxidizing chemicals are stored separately to flammable chemicals. The chemicals have been logged and will be checked annually. The list of chemicals is stored in the prep room and a copy is kept in the main office. CLEAPSS is referred to when dealing with the chemicals. The prep room fan is to be switched on during the school day. Lancashire County Council are given a password each year to access the CLEAPSS website, this is then given to the school. Pupils Pupils must not be allowed in the laboratory without a member of staff. If a child is behaving in an unsafe manner, he/she will not be able to take part in the practical sessions. Pupils must not consume food or drink in the lab. Ties must be tucked away and long hair tied back when doing experiments. Children must stand during experiments with chairs/ stool out of the way. Children must not run in the lab. Equipment Electrical equipment is PAT tested annually by LA electricians. LEV equipment is tested, checked and certified annually by LA inspector. CLEAPSS is referred to for information on the use of certain pieces of equipment such as the Van de Graaff generator. Cleaning Pupils should help to tidy away equipment during the lesson. Mrs. Munday and Ms. Copeland wash up equipment when possible. The lab is swept, wiped and mopped by the cleaning staff.
