3 1. Description The rescue sling strop is an orange buoyant rescue device intended for hoist rescue operations. The rescue sling strop comes in different configurations, depending on operational needs. The padded section is fluorescent orange with 3 silver SOLAS reflex stripes for easy night spotting, 4 anti slip friction stripes and equipped with a rear towing grip. Lite Flite rescue sling strops are split in two groups: Open sling strops, and closed sling strops. Open strop Primary security are two 45mm webbing risers, with A-rings to fit into the hoist hook. Secondary security is a yellow webbing slider with a red webbing handle for the casualty to pull downwards to minimize the distance between the lift straps. The webbing slider forms a double channel, where one channel is sewn tight enough to ensure the slider cannot be removed from the sling strop, and the other channel loose enough for the end of the other riser and D-Ring to pass through in order for the sling to be opened. Closed strop Primary security is the 45 mm webbing risers assembled in a A-ring to fit into the hoist hook. Secondary security is a stainless steel 3-bar slide with 2 webbing toggles for the casualty to pull downwards to minimize the distance between the lift straps. This is called "TRIPLE-S" = Self Securing System. For "Man over board" situations the maritime sling strop P/N features an extra internal safety strap assembled with a 50 mm click-in snap for easy fastening. P/N is a special variant of the closed strop, featuring two slings in one. The outer sling is designed to support the victims legs, giving a sitting position to prevent damages caused by hypothermia. 1.1 Materials used Webbing: 45mm polyamide MIL-W-27265, type 7 webbing, with a tensile strength of 6000 lbs. Hoist point: One or two stainless steel A-rings, with a tensile strength of 4400 lbs. 2. The definition of terms used in this manual are explained, in short, below. Daily inspection: Rescue sling strops are to be functionally checked by the user prior to each use. Daily maintenance: Rescue sling strops must be cleaned and dried by the user after each use. Annual inspection: Every 12 months, rescue sling strops must be carefully inspected by a qualified technician. Rescue sling strops used in adverse and/or dirty conditions may require more frequent inspection. Qualification can be obtained by participating in a Lite Flite maintenance course. By passing such course, a diploma will be issued. Re-qualification must be performed every 36 months. Maintenance: Maintenance is limited to functional cleaning, drying and functional tests. This will be explained in details in the following paragraphs. Repair: Repair is to be carried out by Lite Flite, or a repair station specifically approved by Lite Flite. Rescue sling strops in the P/N xx series contain no user repairable parts. Overhaul: There is no fixed overhaul cycle for Lite Flite rescue sling strops. Page 4 of 9 Rev November 2013 CMM xx

5 4. Cleaning and drying 4.1 Sewn parts Webbing and all other fabric can be spot cleaned with a mild solution of dish soap and lukewarm (max 30 C) tap water, using a small soft brush. To remove salt deposits, let the rescue sling strop stay in a bath of lukewarm tap water (max. 30 C) for minutes, then carefully flush it with cold tap water (max. 20 C) for a minimum of 5 minutes. Rinse until the water from the webbing does not taste salty any more, shake it and allow to dry at room temperature. Buckles, adjusters etc. must be left in open position to allow as much free flowing air around as possible. Do not wring, compress or machine dry the rescue sling strop as this will damage the fibres. 4.2 Hardware Hardware may be cleaned with lint free cotton cloths. Do NOT use abrasives, solvents, acid or caustic liquids as they may damage the anti-corrosion treatment of the hardware. If small stains of oxidation (pre-stage of corrotion) is found, they may be rubbed away using a small soft brush and tooth paste. Do not use steel wool and/or chemicals, as this may be harmfull to the surface treatment. Remember to rinse carefully with cold tap water. After rinsing, shake well and allow to dry at room temperature. 5. Annual inspection and functional tests Lite Flite rescue sling strops are to be inspected and functionally tested after thorough cleaning. All parts must be inspected visually, following the check list in section 7. Always be methodical when inspecting the assembly and work your way from one end of the assembly to the other. Check the Product Log Card for any remarks. 5.1 Webbing Repair or replacement is necessary if your webbing shows any signs of beneath damages: Damaged or cut edges. Heavy wear and exposed single fibers. Partial stiffness from UV radiation Spots from acid (or other aggressive chemicals), rust or mildew. Excessive soiling Missing stitches or damaged sewing. Deformation due to wear or hardware interface. 5.2 Stitch Patterns Repair or replacement is necessary if stitch patterns have broken, cut, worn or missing stitches or threads. Where possible, remember to check all stitch patterns from both sides of the webbing. Page 5 of 9 Rev November 2013 CMM xx

6 5.3 Hardware Repair or replacement is necessary if hardware shows any sign of beneath damages: Nicks, burrs and sharp edges. Deformities, cracks and breaks Missing parts, malfunction, rust or corrosion. Severe wear and tear. Scoring, or uneven wear. Broken or missing components Attention has to be given to: holes, cavities from pitting, and worn surfaces. 5.4 Product label After inspection, check that the product label is readable. If the maintenance is performed by Lite Flite, the label will be replaced by a new label with a new Next inspection date printed. Page 6 of 9 Rev November 2013 CMM xx

9 7. Reporting Rescue sling strops that do not pass final inspection may not re-enter into service. Withdraw the equipment from service, and report to Lite Flite who will advise further action. Storage All repairs and overhauls must appear clearly from the product log card for each rescue sling strop. Storage dates must be entered into the log card. The rescue sling strop may be stored dry and clean in a closed cardboard box, under normal warehouse conditions: The recommended storage temperature range is from +10 o C to +30 o C It is, however, authorized to store at temperatures from -18 o C to +45 o C Rescue sling strops are not to be stored in the same room as lead-acid batteries, other damaging acids or corrosive compounds, and must be stored away from direct sunlight and UV radiation. 9. Release to service By release to service from storage, the rescue sling strop is to be inspected before re-entering service. 10. Life time Lifetime of sewn products are according to conditions and intensity of use. Manufacturers recommendations: Shelf life: Maximum 5 years from date of manufacture Life time: Maximum 5 years from date of initial use. CAUTION!
