3 HIKES START UP AGAIN IN OCTOBER Where-The Grotto at Circle X Ranch, Santa Monica Mountains Date-Saturday, October 18, 2014 Time- Meet at the trail head at 10:00 am. Directions to trailhead- Take Hwy. 1 to Yerba Buena Rd. (Neptune s Net corner) then up about 5 miles to the Circle X Ranch. There are 2 parking areas, an upper & lower. There are flush toilets at the upper and outhouses at the lower just at the start of the trailhead. The hike- The Grotto Trail hike is about 3.5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 650 feet and takes about 2 hours round trip. 5 DIVE HAPPENINGS By Mike Cunningham Remember that 1972 movie The Candidate? Don t say that s before your time. It s been on TV and you can get the DVD. Filmed documentary style, Robert Redford plays an idealistic young lawyer who s talked into running for senate against a very popular incumbent. Most believe he doesn t have a chance in hell of winning. He s basically a sacrificial lamb, expected to lose. Well, he campaigns hard and.spoiler ALERT. SPOILER ALERT. he pulls off an upset win. The point here has nothing to do with running, winning or politics; the last line he tosses out after winning, looking at his team, What do we do now? For me that scene and that line have had a habit of popping up at random in both thought and conversation. Now what? What s next? As Dive Coordinator I get to answer I m sure that s part of the reason why at the very last moment I threw my name in the ring for Dive Coordinator. I can do this, right? Yep, I m here now, what do I do? First how do I do this? I m thinking I ve never done anything like this before then it dawns on me... not I spent a great deal of my dive life calling friends and asking if they want to go diving. Sometime it s them calling me, but still that s Dive Coordinating 101. Where do you want to go? What boat? What day? Who s diving with us? Do we trust this boat crew? Are there any hunters on board today? Do we grab a beer after and if so where? The critical stuff. This is Dive Coordinating 201, Advanced Studies. Hey I m damn near a graduate student. Same goes for hiking and camping. We seemed to always have a plan for the weekend doing this or that. Sometimes we had to wait until after we left to really know where we were going. It was easy. I got this There are few subtle differences, including planning ahead and getting everyone to sign the waivers, but I got this So to answer that question that s bugging me since the 90 s, (it was before my time too), What do we do now? Let s go diving For the month of October, Ken has everything already in the works (or it has already taken place.) We just had a pot luck/campout at Leo Carrillo state beach on the 3rd 5 th. Did you miss it? Hot temps and cold beer with bad surf and no diving. There is a hike on the 19 th at the Grotto at Circle X Ranch. That one I m really looking forward to. I heard it s an easy downhill both ways, out and back Can t wait see that Of course, our club meeting is on the 15 th and has the progressive raffle. So as it stands right now most of my efforts are in November. But I still want to go diving. WE are a dive club after all (Continued on page 7) Channel islands divers 5

7 DIVE HAPPENINGS (from page 5) This is what I found. The Peace looks busy, already chartered. The Spector only has the 25 th and 26 th open and I see that to mean crowds My new favorite, the Explorer, is booked thru the month. I could wait until November 1 and take a chance, a really good chance we would get to experience the now famous Korean hunters/sushi chefs in action. The Raptor is sold out for October except for the 25 th. Soooo,... I m back to November. We re discussing a casino night fundraiser event. There s bunches of stuff involved and gobs of fun to be had. Maybe we could just fly out for the day to Vegas for the day. We could visit Shark Reef. They have sawfish, giant rays, endangered green sea turtles, piranha, jellyfish and the rare golden crocodile, to name a few. In all, there are over 2,000 animals in 1.6 million gallons of water. Or we could gamble. From what I ve seen looking at it so far it appears very promising I m thinking a few camping weekends would be great, just for some change up. Spring is just around the corner and that means snow melt and run off Really, it does Or, there s a short road trip up to the Kern, King or Kaweah rivers. Class II, III, IV and V, all 3 under 200 miles away. It s white water rafting in our own backyard, sort of. I do plan on continuing with the hikes Ken s been doing. Oh ya, and then there is diving. I want to look for a monthly thing. Always wanted to do that. I ll mix in some beach dives along the way. And that brings me to Kayak diving. That s got to be the best of both worlds. Beach and boat. So let me get some of these things going and then we can start talking about Ice diving Or, feel free to offer your suggestions Thanks Mike Channel islands divers 7
