6 Page 6 of 10 Figure 3. Seismometer thru ROV porch Once the north (white with arrow) rib is visible place a North marker outside the caisson to help line up the new seismometer Remove glass beads to below the equatorial flange of the sphere Gently lift old seismometer (DeviceId: 11057) from caisson and monitor cable. (Cable 124) Remember there are two connectors at the aux platform. Place near AUX Platform in direction of tool basket. Vacuum glass beads from the caisson to the depth of the measuring tool but not into the clay. The caisson is 71cm in length Install sufficient glass beads in bottom of caisson to provide level surface Remove new seismometer (Device Id: 21620) from tool basket and carefully place it centrally in caisson with the north rib aligned with the north marker previously installed. Bury the seismometer halfway in glass beads such that the ribs are still visible. Gently tip handle down, paying attention to position of cable relative to the auxiliary platform Determine azimuth of seismometer by taking several DSC photos looking down through the porch. Vehicle and heading output must be stable before photos are taken Position cable to exit from caisson parallel to seafloor and in the direction of the auxiliary platform (West). Ideally, it should be flat to the seafloor crossing the caisson lip. Max bend diameter is about 7 Place cable ends at new AUX Platform. Bury seismometer in glass beads to leave the seafloor as smooth as possible. There should be no obstructions to the bottom current. North marker should be removed and stowed during this operation Take digital still photos of the seismometer and its cable Staple cable to seafloor from the caisson to ~5m away so no part of the cable can be moved by the bottom current Keep one bag of glass beads for P-wave Cover the last ~5m of the cable with glass beads, leaving the seafloor surface smooth.
7 Page 7 of Store glass bead bags with staple on top and collect empty bags to place in mike crate on tool basket. 47. Return to new Auxilary platform (Nortek DeviceId: 21012, BPR Device ID: 22791) Connect auxiliary instrument platform. 1. Take old seismometer cable and oily and place in AUV platform to disconnect oily from old BBS cable. 2. Slide out old BBS cable. 3. Slide in new BBS cable (right position) 4. Connect PBOF cable (70 m oily) from the Instrument Platform to the slide connector from the seismometer 5. Connect seismometer (DeviceId: 21620) to Auxilary platform INST connector. 6. Release battery clamp by using the rope ring attached to grey plastic ring to pull the grey plastic ring down and away from the platform off of bolt 7. Rotate battery 180 degrees to ON position using the hockey pucks or the red bar. The handle will be moved from the edge of the platform towards the middle of the platform 8. Reclamp battery by using rope attached to plastic ring to pull the ring back over the bolt 9. Contact SHORE to power up instruments (J1 on JB -13) 10. Take position of auxiliary platform (DeviceIds: 21012, 22791) 11. Take heading of the Nortek (DeviceId: 21012) on the auxiliary platform. Sight down one side of the platform with the line laser 12. 10 Page 10 of 10 Niskin O2 water sample Staff Scientist responsible: Armaghan Attar Procedure for water sampling and in situ oxygen sample fixing 1) Collect water samples from desired depth with Niskin 2) On deck: fit silicon drawing tube with digital thermometer to spigot 3) Open the release valve (at the top end of the bottle) gently do not open all the way quickly as this might introduce bubbles into the bottle 4) Open the spigot with the open end of the silcon drawing tubing and check for bubbles in the tube. Remove bubbles by gently squeezing tubing and/or adjusting flow rate of water 5) While water is running through the tubing, place the open end at the base of the glass O 2 flask 6) Allow the flask to overflow 3X the total volume of the flask. Take care not to introduce bubbles 7) During the time it takes for (6) note the temperature 8) Close the spigot only after the open end of the drawing tube has been pulled from the flask 9) Add each of two reagents: 1mL of a) MnSO 4 ; and b) Na 2 S 2 O 3 5H 2 O. These reagents will be in dispensing bottles and should be kept at hand while drawing water to the flasks. 10) Seal the flask with the glass stopper only AFTER reagents have been added. 11) The tip of the reagent dispensers should extend below the neck of the oxygen flasks, so that precipitate does not form in the excess seawater above the neck of the flasks 12) Once the stopper is in place; invert the flask in a vigorous fashion repeatedly for 1 minute 13) Make sure that the flask number and event are recorded. Place the fixed sample in the O2 flask case; add distilled water onto the top of the flask to prevent diffusion of air during storage; and store in the cold room 14) Keep the reagents at room temperature in the lab between sampling events
