4 Summary of EN 340 standards for protective clothing - 89/686/EEC All of the six Types identified relate to Category III clothing. This means they are designed to protect against a hazard which may be life threatening. Category I products are those which are not suitable for protection against a hazard. Products such as basic single layer polypropylene are Category I products and are not deemed suitable for protection against a hazard. For the purposes of protective clothing six Types of protection are indentified as: type 1 pren Gas tight suits. Suits which are intrinsically sealed against the environment. type 2 pren Non-gas tight positive pressure suits. Suits which retain a positive internal pressure to prevent ingress of dusts, liquids or vapours. type 3 pren 1511 : 1995 Liquid tight suits. Suits which can protect against strong and directional jets of liquid chemical such as spray from a burst pipe under pressure. Requires a barrier fabric (chemical tests to EN369 Permeation test) and sealed seams. type 4 pren 1512 : 1997 Spray tight suits. Suits which can protect against saturation of liquid chemicals, where the volume of liquid builds up on the suit forming pools, resulting in rivulets. Requires a barrier fabric (chemical tests to EN369 Permeation test) and sealed seams. type 5 pren Dry particle suits. Suits for protection against hazardous dusts and any dry particles. type 6 pren : 1997 Reduced spray suits. Suits for protection against light spray and splashes of liquid chemicals where there is no directional spray or build up of liquid on the suit, but there may be a fine mist of droplets in the atmosphere. In addition, fabrics and seams are tested according to various EN standards in order to provide a mechanical profile of the garment. Finally the garments must be manufactured under appropriate quality control procedures such as ISO EN Barrier to infective agents and biological hazards EN 1149 Antistatic EN 1073 Radio Active Dust Barrier EN STANDARDS// whole suits test Each of the Types defines a whole suit test a test on a finished garment to confirm that a coverall is suitable for the task. This generally involves the test subject entering a glass booth and being sprayed with either a coloured liquid or dry particles. The type of spray used differs according to the type being tested. The result is either a pass or a fail. Please note: This is a brief explanation of the Types to serve as an introduction only. There are many other tests involved in gaining the CE mark for a product. If you would like further information please call our Customer Services Direct Line on: (+44)

6 MICROGARD 1500// Low Hazard Liquid Spray Chemical Protection Type 5 Type 6 MICROGARD 1500// Asbestos Contractors Coveralls Microgard 1500 Asbestos coverall meets all the recommendations made by the HSE as part of its licence requirements. Available in Red, Blue and White for either asbestos stripping, packaging, transiting or other auxiliary tasks Microgard 1500 Asbestos coveralls conform to the EN340 Category 3 Type 5 & 6 standards. Microgard 1500 is an extremely soft, lightweight and breathable coverall designed for protection against hazardous dry particles. Particles or fibres that penetrate a coverall and reach the wearer s skin may be fixed on the wearer s skin and hair and may be difficult to remove by showering. With time, these particles are shed with the skin and can subsequently be inhaled. To minimise this possibility of secondary inhalation one needs to specify coveralls giving the highest possible asbestos fibre hold-out. Protection Level Ideally suited to Type 5 (dry particle) protection because of its particle barrier and high breathability. A breathable fabric means a no bellows effect is created so particles are not actively drawn in through the stitch holes, neck, zip, wrists and ankles. This is a common problem with non-breathable coveralls. Also suitable for many Type 6 (reduced liquid spray) applications because of its effective liquid repellency. Particularly suited for warm environments where the coverall s high breathability means it is more likely to be worn correctly. Protection Level The use of the double layer spunbonded polypropylene improves strength, tear and puncture resistance to give a durable coverall. MICROGARD 1500// The use of a twin layer of microfibre fabric, laminated between the polypropylene provides excellent particle barrier capabilities. The fabric will filter 99.69% of particles of size 3-3.5mu (defined by CEN document. CEN/TC162/WG3/N85) The fabric is soft, light and flexible. This combined with the high breathability results in a very comfortable coverall. Excellent liquid repellency also gives good protection against low hazardous liquid chemicals. Microgard 1500 coveralls have a new sealable zip flap to prevent dust ingress through the zip. Fully elasticated hood, ankles and wrists, to maximise comfort and protection. 05

7 Experts agree that the danger from asbestos comes from particles that are usually 5-10mu and above. Microgard 1500 is an extremely soft, lightweight and breathable coverall that filters 99.69% of particles of size 3-3.5mu. Your assurance that the Microgard Asbestos contractors coverall will offer the wearer the highest level of comfort and protection, not only comes from our expertise, but the independent testing to EN standard carried out by Europe s foremost certification agencies. Even certified brand leading coveralls manufactured solely from polyethylene causes uncomfortable sweating and bellowing. The bellows effect is created when air cannot pass through the fabric, this in turn creates currents of air through the zip, ankles, cuffs and face openings, a dangerous process that causes any particles in the atmosphere to be drawn directly into the suit. The use of a twin layer of microfibre fabric, laminated between two layers of polypropylene, is a design that gives maximum comfort, wearability and durability... but that s not all, when you buy Microgard Asbestos contractors coveralls you will be getting the best, but not paying the earth. Bellows Effect The bellows effect is created when a coverall is made from a nonbreathable material. As the wearer performs normal movements such as walking, the air inside the suit moves around. If it cannot pass through the fabric, this tends to create currents of air through the zip, ankles, cuffs and face opening. This causes any particles in the atmosphere to be drawn into the suit. Design Microgard 1500 uses our optimum pattern coverall designed for maximum comfort, wearability and durability. The design includes the unique x-seam hood for improved head fit. Technical Information Microgard stitched seams Designed for protection against limited spray of liquid chemicals (Type 6) and hazardous dry particles (Type 5). Construction The use of a high quality twoway stretched microporous film provides both effective liquid and particle barrier combined with a high water vapour transmission rate from inside to outside. Microporous Film Polypropylene Dust particles moisture vapour Liquids MICROGARD 2500// Microgard 2500 was the first limited life coverall in the world to use a microporous film to combine effective protection with a high level of wearer comfort. Protection Level Ideally suited to Type 6 (reduced spray) applications due to its excellent liquid repellency properties. It is also ideal for Type 5 (dry particle) protection applications. Meets the European EN standard required as a barrier to radioactive dust particles. Microgard 2500 has passed penetration tests according to ASTM 1671 as a barrier protection against viruses, bacteria and blood borne pathogens. Microgard 2500 coverall provides antistatic protection to EN standard. Properties Microgard 2500 uses one of the highest quality microporous films available on any limited life workwear. Most microporous coveralls use films that stretch in only one direction. The Microgard 2500 film has the unique property of being stretched in both machine and cross directions during manufacture. The result is that the tensile strength and stretch is high in both directions, resulting in a more durable and hard wearing suit. The outer layer of the fabric, consisting of a microporous sponge-like structure denies the passage of liquid molecules, yet allows the passage of vapour molecules to pass from inside to outside, so the wearer stays cool and comfortable. Excellent liquid repellency and particle barrier for protection against low hazard liquid and dust chemicals. Microgard 2500 coveralls are manufactured from composite material to give a strong tear and puncture resistant coverall. These features make it one of the toughest wearing coveralls in its sector. 12 MICROCHEM Microchem 4000 Microchem Apollo Microchem Type II PROVEN VERSATILE, SAFE CHEMICAL PROTECTION STARTS WITH MICROCHEM Working with chemicals, you and your colleagues face hazards every day. Everything from an accidental spill or splash of light liquid to industrial chemicals, warfare agents and radioactive processes. Liquid chemical penetration is a physical process whereby a liquid penetrates a fabric by passing through pores or holes in the fabric. The European standard EN368 (referred to as the gutter test ) measures liquid penetration through a fabric and liquid repellency by a fabric. Permeation is the process by which hazardous liquid chemical moves through a protective material on a molecular level. Molecules of liquid absorb into the outer surface of the material. They then diffuse across the fabric and are released or desorbed from the inner surface. The resistance of Microchem fabric to permeation by a hazardous chemical is determined by measuring the breakthrough time and permeation rate of the chemical through the fabric. Permeation tests are carried out to ASTM f-379, EN369 or EN374-3 For more help and information call the Microgard team on or click 11

16 4000 Type 3 MICROCHEM APOLLO// Type 4 Fully Encapsulated Chemical Suit to EN340 CAT III Developed in the UK with the Fire & Rescue Services Bespoke Designs We recognise that not all applications are the same and that you may require specific design changes to ensure Microchem Apollo performs to your requirements. Our qualified pattern technicians can make required alterations quickly and efficiently. Please contact us for more information. Technical Information In many applications Microchem Apollo is a genuine low cost alternative to the much heavier, expensive traditional chemical suits. The fabric generally has a higher chemical barrier than PVC and other more expensive fabrics yet the price of Microgard Apollo is low enough for it to be considered a disposable suit. The barrier capability of any fabric may be reduced or destroyed on contamination by a chemical. For this reason all chemical suits, regardless of cost or fabric used should be considered single use. Resusable suits should be tested after each use particularly if contaminated. The use therefore of a disposable suit can be safer and more cost effective than using traditional reusable suits. 18 FR EN533 Index 1 EN1149 Antistatic MICROGARD FR / CFR// Type 6 Heat Resistant Low Hazard Liquid Spray Chemical Protection Protection Level Microgard FR is a disposable protective coverall tested to Type 6 (reduced spray), and to EN533 flammability test Index 1. Properties Microgard FR is soft, flexible and breathable, providing effective and comfortable Type 6 protection. The fabric features a unique reinforcing scrim that adds strength to make a more durable coverall. In the event of flash fire the FR properties of the fabric means it will not reduce the TPG performance. How it Works Microgard FR/CFR fabrics char at temperatures below their ignition point, disintegrating in the process and quickly extinguishing the flame. This effectively holds the flame away from the TPG providing an insulating layer of air between the suits. The result is that less heat comes into contact with the TPG, resulting in a lower incidence of body burn. Technical Information MICROGARD CFR// Microgard FR is suitable against hazardous chemicals and has been tested to relevant CE standards and Type 6 (reduced spray). It is not designed for protection against flames if used on its own, though it will perform better than standard disposable coveralls in protection against heat. Microgard CFR is designed to be used in conjunction with a Thermal Protective Garment (TPG), to improve the performance of the TPG whilst also offering protection against hazardous chemical, test type 4, category III. The Problem Unfortunately, thermal protective garments provide no protection against chemical splash. For this reason, in areas where protection is required against both the risk of flash fire and against the risk of chemical splash, users often wear a standard protective garment over the TPG. However... thermal mannequin testing has shown that this actually reduces the performance of the TPG. The chemical protective garment will melt and burn, holding heat against the TPG and increasing the incidence of body burn. The Solutions Microgard FR/CFR has been constructed using specially prepared fabric that will both protect against a variety of chemicals and provide flame retardancy sufficient to maintain and even improve the effectiveness of the TPG. Thermal mannequin testing (see following pages) has shown that the use of Microgard FR/CFR with a TPG can actually improve the overall thermal protection and reduce the incidence of serious body burns in the case of flash fire. PLEASE NOTE: ALL FABRICS HAVE DIFFERENT PERMEATION PERFORMANCE. PLEASE CHECK OUR WEBSITE FOR PERMEATION DATA THAT MEETS YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS. Applications for Microgard FR/CFR Steel Industry Protection against sparks, torch flames and grease during finishing. General Industry Alternative to traditional disposable garments for general dirty work where the risk of flame exists. Electrical and Gas Utilities Worn over thermal protective garments to protect against asbestos, rain and dirt. Telecom Industries Use during manhole access. Protect against contamination by hazardous chemicals. Especially where cutting torches or welders are used or where explosive gases may be evident. In North America the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) recommends organisations should recognise the need for wearing other types of PPE while wearing flame-resistant garments... It is also important that the other selected PPE be compatible with, and do not adversely affect, the performance properties of the flame-resistant garments. Organisations and end users are cautioned that wearing overgarments or other PPE that are not flame resistant over flameresistant garments can compromise the performance of the flame-resistant garment. TEST 2 This shows that wearing the Microgard FR coverall over the TPG instead of the traditional disposable protective coverall, actually improves the overall thermal protection, reducing the total body burn prediction to only 16%. Spunbonded Standard polypropylene Disposable Microgard CoverallsFilm Laminated 2nd degree burn = 23% 3rd degree burn = 30% Unprotected No information TOTAL BURN INJURY 53% 53% Disposable Type 5/6 coverall worn over Nomex IIIA (PP coated polypropylene - 54g, often used as an over-garment to Nomex in order to provide chemical splash protection). This shows the effect of the standard disposable protective garment, when worn over the TPG, is to reduce the overall thermal protection, increasing total body burn to 53%. TEST 4 Microgard CFR over Nomex IIIA 2nd degree burn = 35% 3rd degree burn = 9% Unprotected No information TOTAL BURN INJURY 44% 44% Because the CFR provides a higher level of chemical protection sufficient for Type 4 by the addition of a special film coating, the overall thermal protection is not as good as with the Microgard FR. However, with a reduction in total body burn to 44%, it is still an improvement on the Nomex IIIA only. Our Thermal Mannequin tests predict that: 1. Wearing just a Nomex IIIA overall when exposed to the flash fire, the wearer would suffer 49% body burn. 2. Wearing a standard disposable coverall over the Nomex IIIA to provide it with Type 6 chemical protection, will actually reduce the coverall flame retardant effectiveness and increase body burns from 49% to 53% under similar flash fire conditions 3. Wearing Microgard FR over Nomex IIIA to provide the wearer with Type 6 chemical protection, will INCREASE the overall flame retardant effectiveness and decrease body burns from 49% to 16% 4. Wearing a Microgard CFR over Nomex IIIA to provide the wearer with Type 4 chemical protection, will also INCREASE the overall flame retardant effectiveness and decrease body burns from 49% to 44% MICROGARD CFR// 18
