PRE-DELIVERY Congratulations on choosing a R I Irrigators travelling irrigator. The Australian made Water-Winch and Turbo-Winch irrigators are designed to perform successfully when operated properly in accordance with the manufacturer s specifications and guidelines. Please read the instructions contained in this manual carefully before operating your new irrigator. Failure to act in accordance with these guidelines may void your warranty. All bolts, nuts and screws on your new irrigator were tightened to correct specifications before the machine left the factory. However, these can become loose during shipping, and it is recommended that you ensure all are tightened before operating the machine. CHECK LIST 1. Check bolts, nuts and screws are all correctly tensioned. 2. Complete Re-lubrication 3. Drive chains properly adjusted 4. Winch cable properly installed through the guide rollers and draw bar skid 5. Tyre pressures correct The Turbo-Winch and Water-Winch irrigators are robust irrigation machines that will give years of trouble free service when operated correctly. SAFE OPERATION Be a safe operator. Think before acting and if in doubt always read your Owner s Manual or contact you local dealer. AVOID ACCIDENTS. Most accidents are due to a failure to follow simple and fundamental safety rules. A careful operator is the best insurance against accidents. Never operate or service a machine until you have been instructed and/or understand the irrigator fully. Never attempt to service, oil or adjust a machine while it is in motion or under load Never stand near the cable while it is under tension Never stand directly in front of, behind or between the wheels while machine is in operation or under load Never tow the irrigator trailing a hose full of water Never dismount from tractor while reeling hose or allow anyone to work near hose reel Never disengage clutch while (Turbo-Winch) irrigator is under load Never pull hose by only one ear of the hose pull coupling Never stand directly under the boom. Always keep all shields and guards in place Always keep hands, feet and clothing away from hose cable and all moving parts of the machine Always stop the machine before making any adjustments or repairs and release cable tension before doing so Always keep well clear of sprinkler head while it is in operation. Always look for power lines. 2

LAYOUT Lanes should be a least 3 metres 4 metres (9 12 ) wide Try to keep the lanes well grassed and well mowed to prevent cable becoming fouled The lanes should be perfectly straight. Because of the high stresses that could be involved, caution must be exercised in running the machine over excessive gradients and on undulating ground. If in doubt consult your dealer. All sharp or abrasive objects that may damage the hose must be removed from the path of the irrigator (diagram 1) TRAVELLING IRRIGATOR LAYOUT START POINT 3

STARTING UP (WATER-WINCH & TURBO-WINCH) 1. Connect the hose to the hydrant and proceed to lay it out down the same side of the grassed pathway as the hydrant, and towards the end opposite the anchor point. NB: it should never be laid across the pathway and must be kept clear of the steel cable at all times. Failure to observe these instructions could result in hose damage. Such damage will void the hose manufacturer s warranty. 2. Tow the machine into the pathway adjacent to the loose end of the hose and facing towards the anchor point. Disconnect the machine from the tractor and couple the hose to the machine. 3. If brakes are not fitted to your irrigator, ensure that approximately 9 metres (30 feet) of hose is trailing behind the machine. This acts as a brake and prevents over-run of the cable due to the thrust from the sprinkler. 4. (WATER-WINCH only). Disengage the two pawls by placing the tip of the bottom pawl into the bracket on the top pawl. This can only be done with the piston in the down position. 5. (TURBO-WINCH only). Make sure the clutch is disengaged by raising the clutch release knob to the zero position. 6. Adjust cable drum brake, leaving enough tension so that the cable may be pulled out without moving the irrigator. 7. Disengage the dog clutch to free cable to be towed. NOTE; Dog clutch will automatically re-engage when irrigator starts. 8. Hook the cable to the tractor and after towing it to the far end of the run, firmly anchor it. Gradually slow to a stop at the anchor point. (DO NOT STOP ABRUPTLY) 9. Ensure cable shut-off clamp stopper (Trip Clamp) is set correctly and is tight on the cable. This will ensure the machine stops at the end of the run. 10. The sprinkler nozzle should be pointed straight down the grassed pathway so that, while pressure builds up, there will be no damage to the crop because of inadequate stream break-up. 11. Start the pump and, as pressure builds up, the power mechanism will automatically engage and the machine will commence travelling. NOTE: MAXIMUM TOWING SPEED FOR THE CABLE AND IRRIGATOR HOSE IS 5 KILOMETRES PER HOUR. 4

GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 1. PRESSURE REQUIREMENTS MODEL MINIMUM OPERATING PRESSURE WATER WINCH P25 65 PSI 447 KPA P30 75 PSI 516 KPA P35 75 PSI 516 KPA TURBO WINCH T30 75 PSI 516 KPA T35 75 PSI 516 KPA T45 75 PSI 516 KPA R I Irrigators recommend the above minimum operating pressures for your Traveller to work effectively. Due to the low pressure it is imperative that all mains, couplings, hydrants, etc. are in first class working order, properly designed and installed. If any doubt please check with your Dealer. SMALL NOZZLE LARGE NOZZLE LOW PRESSURE HIGH PRESSURE 2. TRAVEL SPEED (WATER WINCH ONLY) The travel speed of the R I Irrigator Traveller is controlled by the amount of water allowed to flow through the cylinder. Refer to the diagram in Table 1. On the exhaust line is a ball valve and two discharge nozzles. These two restrictions govern the amount of water allowed into the cylinder and as they are on the exhaust line, they do not restrict the supply to the cylinder. The major adjustment of travel speed should be made at the nozzles. The larger nozzle orifice, the less restriction there will be and hence the travel speed will be greater. Fine adjustments should be made with the ball valve. It is inadvisable to rely on the ball value as the major adjustment as this will not give adequate break-up of the exhaust. TABLE 1 NOZZLE PART NO. SIZE ( ¼ BSP) GREY mm YELLOW mm RED mm NOTE: 2 of each supplied with the Water Winch Irrigator. Once the proper tips have been selected, check the travel speed of the machine by marking its position and then marking again its position in 5 minutes time. A measurement of the distance between the two marks gives the machines travel speed (when divided by 5) in inches per minute. Best results will be obtained from machines working on grassed pathways. 5

GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 2. TRAVEL SPEED (TURBO WINCH ONLY) The travel speed of the irrigator is controlled by two methods. 1. GEARBOX (5 POSITIONS) N, 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th To select the required gear, we must firstly understand that the higher the gear, the faster the machine moves (just like driving a car) NEVER CHANGE GEARS WHILE THE MACHINE IS UNDER LOAD (operating) To change gear we need to FIRSTLY move the throttle lever to Zero Position. This stops the machine and applies a break to the gearbox. SECONDLY change gear position as required. THIRDLY move the throttle back to the required position and the machine will commence travelling again. 2. THROTTLE LEVER (Diverter Arm) ZERO to 6 This lever is the source of power to the Gear Box. We can set this to the desired position, after selecting the required gear. The higher the position of the Quadrant, the faster the machine will move. We can lock the throttle lever in position with the adjustable stop. The only other variables to speed will be from water flow/pressure and hose load. 6

GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS END OF RUN PROCEDURE The Travelling Irrigator will automatically shut-down upon reaching the shut-off clamp at the end of the run. Switch off the pump and disconnect the hose from the mainline. Ensure the hose is laid out straight with no kinks. (TURBO WINCH ONLY) Release cable tension by pushing the throttle lever to the zero position. NOW while holding it in this position, move the Gear Lever to N. (Neutral). We can now SLOWLY move the throttle lever to the left allowing the break off and the cable to relax. (WATER WINCH ONLY) Release cable tension by reversing the tractor (anchor point) back towards the irrigator. Disconnect cable from anchor point and secure to the irrigator. Now hook the towing tractor to the irrigator and proceed to reel the hose in following these basic steps. 1. Back the irrigator up until you have metres (10 15 feet) of slack in the hose. (Applicable to units with compressor fitted) 2. If purging the hose- attach the hose to the blow out coupling, and then move forward making the hose taut. Engage P.T.O. and run tractor at 540 RPM MAXIMUM 3. Repeat Step 1. Then place the hose end into the opening in the centre of the hose reel and hand wind in any slack (Minimum 1 full turn of the hose reel). 4. Make sure the hose is passed through the hose roller box, between the vertical and horizontal rollers. 5. Connect the tractor P.T.O. to the hose reel P.T.O. Now while seated on the tractor (stay there until job is finished) using low throttle idle. Reel in the hose stopping about 3 metres (10ft) from the end. The last 3 metres (10ft) should be secured by hand to the hose reel. 6. We are now ready to move to the next lane to start another irrigation run. 7

GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS CABLE DRUM BRAKE The cable drum is fitted with a spring loaded brake assembly. This is to prevent over-run when the cable is being pulled out. The brake assembly includes a handle for adjustment. CABLE REWIND If there is a need to rewind the irrigator cable manually, this can be achieved by a hand crank mechanism or by P.T.O. An example of this would be if there is a need for the cable to be anchored beyond the end of the run (Pathway). In this case the cable would be wound in manually. DRIVE CHAINS Eliminate slack in all chains by adjusting idlers, bearings or by removing a half or full link. HOSE REEL HORIZONTAL ROLLER This roller should be kept parallel to the hose reel and approx 25 mm (1 ) above the lower reel rim. WATER PRESSURE (WATER WINCH ONLY) Water under pressure is fed to a hydraulic valve and to the poser cylinder. The valve causes the cylinder to alternate up and down and this creates the movement of the irrigator. It is very important that the water used throughout the water circuit is kept free of dirt, sand and other particles. A filter is used to keep the valve from clogging up and also ensure maximum life of the hydraulic components. The filter requires cleaning regularly, but with very dirty water may eventually clog. If this happens, the forward travel of the machine can be halted. To clean the filter, open the valve on the base of the filter and flush. 8

GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS ADJUSTING THE WATER WINCH IRRIGATOR STEP 1 ADJUSTMENT OF PAWLS Making certain that the power cylinder is in the completely extended position; the bottom pawl arm should be positioned as shown in Figure 1. (p. 10). This adjustment is obtained by adjusting the clevis yoke. STEP 2 VALVE SPOOL POSITION Set the automatic stop lever to Run position. Remove the striker roller from the spring pivot arm which will allow you to actuate the valve manually. Move slowly by have the actuating arm to the position where it springs over centre. At this point, with the spring just over the centre position, the valve spool actuating link should be approx ¼ to 5/16 away from the adjusting nut and washer C or D (Figure 2 page 10). Make this test with valve spool in and out and adjust adjusting nuts C & D so as the actuating arm has the same clearance in each position. Tighten adjusting nuts C & D firmly. STEP 3 SPRING TENSION With the striker roller removed, manually move the spring pivot arm over centre slowly and allow the actuating arm to rest on adjusting nut C or D. Release your grip on actuating arm and the spring should move the valve spool actuating link to the opposite position. If this fails to occur, increase tension on spring. This test should be made with the valve spool in both positions. Replace the striker roller. NOTE: It is important not to have excessive spring tension. STEP 4 VALVE TIMING Screw adjusting screws A & B fully outward. Start the Pump. The power cylinder will fully extend or retract depending n the position of the valve and then stop. Screw in adjusting screw A or B (whichever is applicable) until the actuating arm springs over centre, then screw that screw one full turn further in and lock. Repeat adjustment on other screw. 9

GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS STEERING The steering on the R I Irrigators Traveller is of an Ackerman type to give maximum stability. A guide on the tow bar steers the machine along the cable. The tow bar is hinged to an extension bracket which pivots on the front axle. Steering arms are bolted to the rear of this bracket and extended to the stub axles. Adjust the steering arms by the steering arm bolts. To check the steering, first centralise the tow bar by measuring from the bolt in the centre of the stub axle to the pin of the cable guide, making the measurement from right and left sides equal. Then tie a piece of string to the rear axle and pass it around the rear wheel to the front wheel at mid-height. Touch the front tyre with the string. If the alignment is correct, the string when just touching the rear of the front tyre should have 1 / 8 clearance at the front. The front axle is angled to give the wheels camber. Additionally, the wheels have a 1 / 4 " toe in. CARE OF THE HOSE ANGUS IRRIGATOR HOSE The life of the hose will depend greatly on the care it receives from the owner. The hose can be repaired if it is accidentally damaged. There are a number of things that should be noted regarding hose care: Make sure all laneways are well grassed and free from sharp or abrasive objects such as stones etc. Do not drive tractors or farm equipment over the hose or operate tillage and harvesting equipment near the hose. Avoid using the hose for mainline by laying it at right angles to the pathway. This can complicate the procedure of winding up the hose. If the hose is cut so that the fibre core of the hose is damaged, consult your dealer for the method of repair. WARNING! REMEMBER ACCIDENTAL HOSE DAMAGE IS NOT COVERED BY MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. IT IS IN THE OWNERS INTEREST TO ADHERE TO THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS. 11
