10 ASCERTAINMENT OF THE ACHIEVED PERFORMANCE LEVEL [PL] For the evaluation of the selected safety chain, the performance level, PL, is determined based on the following values: Structure (category) MTTFd (Mean Time to Failure dangerous): Mean time to dangerous failure DC (Diagnostic coverage): Diagnosis coverage level CCF (Common cause failure): Failure mutual cause

11 Structure (category) ASCERTAINMENT OF THE ACHIEVED PERFORMANCE LEVEL [PL] MTTFd from cat. 1 is higher than from cat. B, therefore the probability of a safety function failure is lower. Nonetheless, errors can lead to a loss of a safety function. In cat. 2, a fault can lead to the loss of a safety function, if it occurs between two tests. In category 3, the accumulation of undetected errors can lead to a loss of the safety function. In category 4, the requirement of a safety function cannot be carried out until there is positive testing.

16 EXAMPLE 1 Safe venting (PL e, cat. 4) and protection against unintentional start-up (PL e, cat. 4) Initial situation The opening of the protective grid door must cause the pneumatic system to be vented. In so doing, no unintentional machine startup may occur within the hazardous area during maintenance procedures. Protected system

17 EXAMPLE 2 Safe stop (PL d, cat. 3) and protection against unintentional start-up (PL d, cat. 3) For the removal of rejected components from the conveyor belt, the downstream drives should stop safely due to the interruption of the electric eyes. When carrying out work in the hazardous area within the electric eye zone, it must be impossible to unintentionally start-up the machines. The pneumatic valves and the diagnosis by means of a pressure switch should be installed in a valve cluster.

18 EXAMPLE 3 Two-hand control (PL c, cat. 1) and protection against unintentional start-up (PL c, cat. 1) Crimping between the cylinder piston and the piston rod is realized by means of a purely pneumatic press with two-hand actuation. When the button is released, the press cylinder will move to the upper final position.

19 EXAMPLE 4 Protection against unintentional start-up (PL d, cat. 3) It must not be possible to open the packaging machine's protective casing, until all pneumatic drives are at a standstill.

20 EXAMPLE 5 Safe venting (PL c, cat. 1) and protection against unintentional start-up (PL c, cat. 1) If the operator enters into the hazardous area marked in red, the robots should stop and the pneumatic system should vent safely. The hazardous area is monitored using laser scanner. In this example, the robot is not a part of the safety-related evaluation. Protected system

21 EXAMPLE 6 Reduce pressure (PL c, cat. 1) and protect against unintentional start-up (PL c, cat. 1) If the operator enters into the hazardous area marked in yellow, the robot's speed should be reduced and the pneumatic system should reduce the pressure. The hazardous area is monitored by a laser scanner. In this example, the robot is not a part of the safety-related evaluation.

22 EXAMPLE 7 Monitor pressure (PL d, cat. 3) and protect against unintentional start-up (PL d, cat. 3) In addition to automatic mode, maintenance mode can also be selected via the operating mode switch. When the handling station is in maintenance mode, the actuators must be moveable under pressure. The pressure should be reduced in the maintenance unit to a defined-level and safely monitored, so that the actuators are not subject to a risk of crushing, while configuration and adjustment options can still be carried out. If the pressure reaches a critical level, the safety PLC receives an analogue signal, and the system is vented.

EU: ISO has been established as the EN standard harmonized with CE Machinery Directive. Products not compliant with ISO cannot be sold in the EU. USA: ANSI, China: GB, Korea: KS. These countries are introducing this standard to the standard of the countries. - The number of users requesting ISO is growing.

Objectives (2) Valves with a position detection function are required to be ISO compliant. - The ISO safety standard specifies the requirements for safety related circuits, and the procedure to verify the circuit and reduce the risk of the circuit. - ISO evaluates safety with four parameters: (1)Category of equipment, (2)B10/MTTD (life data), (3) DCavg (self diagnosis rate), and (4)CCF(Common Cause Failure) - A residual pressure release valve with position detection sensor is needed to realize the safety related circuit specified by (1)Category of equipment.

The meter-out type SSC valve prevents the sudden extensions by effecting meter-in control when there is no pressure, and resumes the ordinary meter-out control after the cylinder has been pressurized. With the meter-in type, there is no risk of sudden extensions because the cylinder speed is constantly under meter-in control.
