Introduction By making sure you have a clearly established emergency plan that is updated as needed and everyone on the farm knows how to follow the plan you can help make first response faster and less confusing.
Preparing the Preplan Name of Owner and/or Farm Name Full 911Address Phone numbers Home/Cell phones Neighbors Equipment Dealers Gas/Electric suppliers Consultants Insurance Company
Preparing the Preplan Maps Building information Name of Building Construction General Contents Special Hazards Evacuation plan Water supply (Wells/Public/Ponds) Gas/Electric (Supply/Location/Shut-offs) Fences/Gates/Roadways Name of fields/known hazards
911 Does everyone on the farm know how to call 911? Can everyone give directions to your farm or remote locations on your farm?
Directions When giving directions to the 911 Dispatcher include the following: 911 Address Road names Specific mileage Visible landmarks Note: Using your cell phone may not ensure being located by a 911 dispatcher.
Operator Info Your name and the telephone number you are calling from The number and condition of the victim(s) Information on the nature of the emergency Any care that has been rendered to the victim(s)
Operator Info Special conditions that will hinder rescue efforts (overturned machinery, entanglements, downed power lines, fire, chemical spill, animals present) Specific instructions on how to get to the victim (remote location or confined space) Who, if anybody, will meet and direct EMS/fire to location of the incident When making the 911 call, never hang up until told to do so by the dispatcher.
Employee Preparedness Make sure they know how to operate equipment specific to your farm Locations and how to use personal protective equipment (Respirators/masks, Harnesses, etc.) Make sure they know how to shut-off power sources and locations of emergency shut-offs (Gas, electric and on all equipment).
Employee Preparedness Know where fire extinguishers and first aid kits are located Know how to call 911 and give directions to your farm and remote locations Know where your pre-plan is located and how to understand it and the location of the designated meeting area.

Grain Bins Grain engulfment and entrapment incidents are on the rise in recent years due to larger storage facilities and equipment that moves grain faster than ever. Flowing grain behaves like quick sand. Adults can sink to knees in 4 seconds becoming unable to free them selves. An adult can be completely engulfed in 20 seconds.

Grain Bin Do s Lock out the control circuit before entering. Always use buddy system when entering grain bins. Wear OSHA approved respiratory protection. Never enter without safety harness and safety line. Carry pole with you at all times.

If you become trapped, attempt to stay up right. Cover your mouth and nose with your hands and take short breaths. Do Not go in after the victim. You too are likely to become trapped or cause the grain to move around the victim. Call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to assemble your own rescue team.

Grain Bin Don ts No Children!!!! Don t go in after the victim. Don t attempt rescue without expert assistance. No one enters without life line. Don t open bin. Don t allow any spark generating tools. Don t walk around victim.
Rescue Procedures First arriving rescuers and all bystanders need to be accounted for. Partially submerged victims are visible and therefore easy to locate. Simply pulling the victim out requires tremendous force and will injure the victim.
Rescue Procedures Engage Incident Command & accountability systems. - Lock-out & Tag-out the electrical service to the bin. - Using confined space procedures, an interior sector descends to the victim. - A lifeline is attached to the victim to keep him/her from submerging further. - Since the grain will tend to flow back onto the victim once shoveled away, some type of shielding is helpful. EMS backboards, plywood, bucket, and coffer dam are all valuable tools.
Picture retrieved from: KC Supply Co. Inc.
Farmers will have large scoop shovels to move grain. Vacuum units may also be of assistance to move grain away from a patient. If the patient is buried deep and in extremis, rescuers may have to resort to cutting the bin and removing the grain from a round the victim rapidly.
1- Engage incident command and accountability systems. 2- Lock-out, tag-out all electrical service to the bin. 3- Following confined space procedures, an interior sector visually inspects the surface of the grain. 4- An exterior sector selects the places to cut the bin.
5- V shaped cuts are made with an air chisel on individual panels. 6- Do not cut through reinforcing angle iron pieces. 7- Cut the bin in opposing patterns. This allows for an even flow of grain from the bin. 8- Several cuts maybe may be needed to find the victim(s). Empty the bin if people are unaccounted for.
