3 Thank you for purchasing the H+WS WATER SOFTENER from HYDROCARE... Thanks to the water softener, your water system, heating system, boiler as well as heat exchanger, household appliances, taps and fittings are protected against scale. MANUAL This manual is a safe guide about use of the HYDROCARE water softener. Please read it carefully in all its parts before use and installation of the unit. This manual is integral part of the product, therefore is to be kept for future references. HYDROCARE reserve the right to introduce changes without notice or replacement. COMPONENTS OF THE WATER SOFTENER The softener is the absolute solution to scale problems in water. Very easy to install and to use, it is made up of a container for the resins, a container for the salt, necessary for periodically regenerating the resins, and a hydropneumatic valve which, controlled by a timer, carries out the regeneration cycles necessary to keep the unit efficient. IMPORTANT: the softener may be installed on municipal water only. For different applications (on well water, etc.) please ask the written authorisation to HYDROCARE by indicating the serial number of the softener. INSPECTION Upon receipt of the water softener, check that the packaging and the softener itself have not been damaged during transport. 3

5 1 - REGULATIONS CE MARK Declaration of Conformity The water softeners are in conformity with the European Directives, Laws and Regulations. Low Voltage Directive: 73/23/EEC assimilated with E.O. no. 791 dated 18/10/77 93/68/EEC assimilated with E.O. no. 626 dated 25/11/96 Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive: 89/336/EEC assimilated with E.O. no. 476 dated 04/12/92 92/31/EEC assimilated with E.O. no. 476 dated 04/12/92 93/68/EEC assimilated with E.O. no. 615 dated 12/11/96 93/97/EEC assimilated with E.O. no. 615 dated 12/11/96 Directives RoHS and WEEE: 02/98/EEC assimilated with E.O. no. 151 dated 25/07/05 02/96/EEC assimilated with E.O. no. 151 dated 25/07/05 Note: In compliance with the national regulations, the installing company has to issue to the buyer a Declaration of Conformity concerning the produced systems. 2 - THE ADVANTAGES OF WATER SOFTENERS The mineral salts of Calcium and Magnesium, making up the hardness, are the major cause of scale and damage to water systems, boilers, heaters, household appliances, taps and fittings. When the water hardness is higher than 15 f, installing a softener is recommended. Through special food-grade resins the water softener retains the Calcium and Magnesium salts, thus removing the excessive hardness. Thanks to the protection against scale performed by the softener, it is possible to keep the energy efficiency of water systems, household appliances and taps always at best, thus saving both on maintenance costs and consumptions as well as on energy bills (electricity, gas, etc.)! The cost of the softener itself is hence repaid quickly in some years! Other important advantages are: less use of detergents, softer and more lasting clothes, shorter cooking times, easier cleaning of house, sanitary ware, taps and fittings, stainless steel sinks, benefits for beauty treatments and personal hygiene (smooth skin, soft and bright hair). 5

6 3 - TERMS AND GLOSSARY WATER HARDNESS It is expressed in French degrees ( f) and represents the quantity of calcium and magnesium salts present in water. Unit of measure = 1 f = 0,01 gr of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) present in one cubic metre of water Soft water < 15 f Hard water f Very hard water > 25 f WATER SOFTENER It is an appliance that, through special resins, removes Calcium and Magnesium salts from water. REGENERATION It is a washing of the softener resins carried out with water and salt in order to remove Calcium and Magnesium retained by the resins. 8 9 - INSTALLATION 9.1 DIRECTIONS FOR PROPER INSTALLATION - The softener must be installed by qualified staff who shall issue a certificate of proper installation in compliance with the European and national regulations. - The softener must be installed in places with enough room for maintenance. - The installation of the softener must be carried out by following the drawing shown at section The installer must not run water inside the softener in any case. - The user shall notify the installation to the national competent authority. - The user shall take care of getting the salt. - The installation of softeners for domestic potable use must be carried out by following the directions below: placing the equipment in hygienically suitable areas; presence of a water meter before the equipment and of taking points for analysis before and after treatment systems; presence of a by-pass system for cutting out the softener; presence of a manual or automatic mixing valve for adjusting the water hardness at the outlet (optional); presence of a check valve. Make sure the following operating conditions are observed: - Pressure: 2-6 bar - Room temperature 5-40 C - Water temperature: 5-40 C - Minimum water flow rate: 1000 l/ora (with p=1bar) - Mains voltage: 230V+/-10%; 50-60Hz In case of spill, brine is not irritating, nor toxic and nor harmful, does not produce noxious fumes. It is however recommended to avoid contact with eyes. Never disassemble the components of the valve. Check that during installation pipes are without any working shavings or any other foreign bodies. Provide a 230V power supply plug. For a proper working of the softener, do not make any extension on the power supply cable. After installation, make sure that the unit does not stand on the power supply cable. Install a filter (6) between the by-pass for the cutting out of the system and the water supply entry of the softener. For in-out connections of the softener to the system use flexible hoses or vibration-damping joints. Connect the drain hose of the valve and the overflow hose of the brine tank to the drain with two separate hoses (supplied with the system see installation drawings). IMPORTANT: Drain must be free (at atmospheric pressure) and not sealed. Provide a siphon drain pipe with enough draining capacity (Ø YES NO 25 mm). The drain must be lower than the overflow level of the tank. 8

During the movement phases of the "filling cycle", four horizontal fixed dashes are displayed. When the valve stops on filling cycle, the four horizontal dashes are flashing. Repeat the operation if necessary. To stop the cycle earlier, press the button for 1 second. 10

11 11 - USE OF THE WATER SOFTENER DIRECTIONS ON USE - Except from the clock updating and the programming of the time period for salt alarm, never modify the programming of the Timer set by the authorized Technical Assistance Service during start up. - Every two months check water hardness by using the special kit supplied. - In case of fire, immediately cut off power supply, do not breathe the fumes caused by the combustion (vessel and/or resins) and wear protective suit and breathing apparatus to enter the rooms HOW TO MEASURE WATER HARDNESS As mentioned, every two months it is necessary to check the water hardness at the outlet of the softener. Should it be higher than 15 f, please call the authorized Technical Assistance Service, carrying out the start up and testing, for any inspections and adjustments. To measure water hardness at the outlet, operate as follows: Take the test tube supplied with the kit. Rinse it out with running water, then fill it up to the value 5 ml. Add a drop of reagent into the tube and shake it slowly. The water will get reddish. Repeat the operation by counting the drops poured, until the water will get the colour of the reagent used (dark green). Example: 20 drops = 20 f hardness If 20 drops have been added to make the colour change, the water hardness will be equal to 20 French degrees. So each drop of reagent poured corresponds to 1 French hardness degree. The value of the residual hardness for potable water recommended is 15 f HOW TO STOP THE SOFTENER If the softener has not been used for a period longer than days, it is necessary to unplug the power supply, close the on-off valves before and after the system and open the by-pass gate valve (see installation drawing at sections 9.1). After this non-use period, connect the power supply again, open the on-off valves before and after the system and close the by-pass gate valve. Carry out a manual regeneration. To launch this operation, press key. 11
