Patient Sleep Test Hookup Dear Patient, The following information is designed to help you fit the apparatus for your sleep study. It is important that you follow the instructions carefully. 1. Preparation a. Aim to go to bed / sleep at about the same time as normal. b. Take a shower about hours before bedtime. c. Dry yourself thoroughly and do not apply any skin creams, etc. d. Wear normal bed clothing or a cotton T-shirt. 2. Electrodes a. Prepare your skin for the electrodes i. Gently abrade the electrode sites with the abrasive provided. ii. Use the alcohol wipes provided and allow skin to dry. iii. Attach 4 small electrodes to the positions on the head as illustrated below: 1. Behind the left ear on the boney prominence. 2. 1cm out and 1cm down from the corner of your right eye. 3. As close to your hairline as possible on the right hand side of the forehead. 4. In the centre of your forehead. 1
iv. Attach 2 large electrodes on the collar bones as illustrated below: 1. Left collar bone 2. Right collar bone 3. Recording Device a. Hold the recording device and wrap the elastic band around your torso. Attach the belt through the loop on the recording device. b. Pull the straps until they are firm but not tight, to hold the recording device in place. c. Keep the extra leads attached and avoid tangling them, we will attach them next. 2
4. Electrode Leads a. To assist keeping the leads tidy put the electrode connectors over your left shoulder. b. Following the colours below, attach the electrode leads to the electrodes. i. Start at the left collar bone (Red) and right collar bone (Yellow). ii. Black is behind the left ear on the boney prominence. iii. Drape the remaining leads behind your neck and over your right shoulder. iv. Blue is 1cm out and 1cm down from the corner of your right eye. v. Orange as close to your hairline as possible on the right hand side of the forehead. vi. Green in the centre of the forehead. c. Once attached, you can help hold the leads in place by securing the leads on the left shoulder with some tape. d. Make sure you can easily move your head and the cables do not become tight. e. Place the leads over the right ear so that they are comfortable. 3
f. If you have been advised to connect chin leads, attach electrodes as shown: i. Place two electrodes underneath your chin 4-5cms apart then attach the two remaining leads to these electrodes. 5. Respiratory Bands There are two respiratory bands i. Blue Thoracic (Chest) ii. Yellow Abdominal (Stomach) a. Wrap the correct band around the chest (blue) or stomach (yellow). b. Make sure that the band is not twisted. c. Take the ends of the band locks and align the arrows. d. Push the two parts together. e. Twist the parts so that the band is straight and the connector is aligned. 4
f. To minimize movement of the bands, use some tape to attach the bands to your shirt. 6. Oximeter Sensor a. Attach the blue finger clip sensor to your non-dominant index or middle finger. i. Your non-dominant hand is the one you DO NOT write with. b. The white wire should be on top of your hand. c. With a loosely clenched hand tape the wire to your finger and forearm. d. Ensure that the cable does not become tight with movement of your arm. e. If provided you can clip the grey connector to one of the bands or your collar, otherwise tuck the joiner under the black elastic belt. 5
7. Nasal Cannula a. Position the nasal prongs into nostrils i. Ensure that the prongs bend towards you. b. Place loops over each ear. c. Slide toggle tube up under the chin to hold cannula firmly in place. d. Place tape over cheek bones (do not squeeze the tubes flat). e. Attach to port on recording device and turn clockwise to secure (if not already connected). You are now ready to go to bed a. The recording device will start automatically. b. You will hear a beep when it starts this is entirely normal. 6
When you wake in the morning a. Please be careful removing the recording device. b. Remove the recording device before you shower. c. Remove the nasal cannula from your nose. d. Remove the Respiratory belts by aligning the arrows and then pushing the ends to separate the 2 parts (opposite to connecting them). e. Remove the blue finger sensor. f. Peel off the sticky electrodes on your head (4) and shoulders (2). g. Take off the recording device. h. Please place the assembly back into the carry bag. Finally, please return the complete system to the same location where you were fitted at a time allocated by your Sleep Technician. 7
