AWWA Standards and Manuals AWWA Standards are documents that serve as a basis for the manufacture and contract specifications for the purchase and use of water works products and services. There are 172 AWWA standards to date, all ANSI approved. AWWA Manuals contain useful information, best practices, and recommendations to assist operations personnel. There are 16 published manuals from the Standards Council to date, 50+ in total.

AWWA G100 Standard Scope - Describe the critical requirements for effective operation and management of a treatment plant. Purpose - Define the critical requirements for maintaining water quality, system management programs, and operation and maintenance of facilities. Application - Evaluation of water treatment plant operation and management.
AWWA G100 Standard & Operational Guide 2005 G100 Standard approved and published 2011 AWWA published (under Technical and Educational Council) the Operational Guide to AWWA Standard G100
G-100 Operational Guide
G100 Reality Check
AWWA G200 Standard (Distribution System Operation and Management) This standard defines the critical requirements for the operation and management of potable water distribution systems 25
Critical Requirements (G200 Standard - Distribution System Operation and Management) Maintenance of Water Quality System Management Programs Operations and Maintenance of Facilities Verification
AWWA G200 Operational Guide Operational Guide to AWWA G200 Standard Distribution Systems Operations & Management Author: Kanwal Oberoi, ME, PE First Edition approved by AWWA Second Edition approved
AWWA G300 Standard Developed under AWWA Standards Council by Source Water Protection Committee 2007 AWWA approved and published the 1st Edition of G300 Standard nd Edition of the G300 Standard approved and published
AWWA G300 Operational Guide Developed under AWWA Technical & Educational Council by SWP Committee in 2009, to support the implementation of Utility Management Standard for SWP (G300) Guidebook completed and published in May 2010
AWWA G300 Standard The minimum requirements for a source water program include six primary elements: 1. Source water protection program vision 2. Source water characterization 3. Source water protection goals 4. Source water protection action plan 5. Implementation of the action plan 6. Periodic evaluation and revision of program *Involvement of stakeholders throughout the process
Example of a SWP (G300) Vision (Groton Utilities, CT) Vision: To achieve long-term preservation of safe and sustainable drinking water supplies through proactive watershed protection in the Groton Utilities public water supply watersheds.
Example of a SWP (G300) Mission Statement (Philadelphia, PA) Mission Statement: To preserve and enhance the health of the region s watersheds through effective wastewater and storm water services and the adoption of a comprehensive watershed management approach that achieves a sensible balance between cost and environmental benefit and is based on planning and acting in partnership with other regional stakeholders.
Testimony from Bob Morgan of Beaver Water District (Arkansas) G300 and the Operational Guide were a tremendous help in organizing our source water protection plan into a coherent document. Also, the checklists in the operational guide walked us through all of the elements of a source water program. Because of the checklists, we thought about items that previously we had not considered as part of source water protection. Finally, having a program that is in accordance with the American Water Works Association standard gives us credence with many of the stakeholders that were somewhat reluctant at first.
Utility Quality Management Program and Benefits
Utility Quality Management Program Overview Voluntary effort All utilities All sizes Above and Beyond regulations Outcome-oriented: Water quality, Compliance, Public Health & Environmental Protection, Efficiency Improvement Performance can be verified by peer evaluators Self-assessment by staff
Optimization of Utility Operations Encourages continuous improvement Provides framework for self-evaluation Instills customers with confidence and trust Conveys confidence between Utility & Regulators Provides opportunity for counsel and assistance to other utilities
Utility Performance Optimization Tool Conformance with Utility Management Standards will enhance public confidence while demonstrating continuous improvement efforts
Testimonials Applying the G-Series voluntary standards to utility operations helps to manage utilities in a way which guarantees peace of mind Assures continuity in performance optimization Guarantees development of SOPs Institutional knowledge retention Tool to maintain safe performance based on good practices NOT good luck
