The award-winning collections Ski, Golf and Lifestyle are developed by passionate sports experts and tested by professional athletes like Didier Cuche and Charl Schwartzel. The company originates from an idea by the Swiss entrepreneur Didi Serena and Olympic ski champion Lasse Kjus. The two first collaborated to create the first two-way-stretch ski pants. Their functional garments shook up the market, setting new standards of performance along the way. The products are designed to enable sportspeople to focus on the experience. The Story Behind the Brand The first KJUS collection was launched in 2000 by Lasse Kjus and Didi Serena, one an Olympic ski champion from Norway, the other an entrepreneur from Switzerland. Over a game of golf, the two were chatting about the principles of professional golf apparel freedom of movement and comfort and lamented that the market was lacking skiwear that had been developed with those same ideals in mind. And so they made it their mission to fill the gap. 5 THE COLLECTION With the Fall Winter 2018/19 Collection we took the lines of modern architecture and laid the rugged silhouette of the Alpine world as a template above. The approach fuses two essential components of the KJUS DNA a clear design language and mountain lifestyle. The highlight of the Performance Ski Collection, indeed the Collection as a whole, is our revolutionary Freelite technology. Our engineered knitwear has been taken to the next level with the introduction of a number of high performance pieces that showcase Freelite as a versatile technology that continues to redefine the concept and performance of stretchability. For Luxury Ski and Lifestyle we have continued to be inspired by the magical Engadin region; an area of Switzerland that KJUS has close connections with. For the Fall Winter 2018/19 Luxury Ski and Lifestyle Collections we have continued with our use of premium, technical Italian wool fabrics resulting in pieces that seamlessly blend elegance and function. Our color palette for the Skiwear Collection focuses on bright and sporty colors in combination with neutrals; a color palette which builds a perfect contrast to the snowy mountains. Our Lifestyle pieces feature calm tones such as navy and black in combination with brilliant colors for subtle accents. The approach to the Fall Winter 2018/19 Collection, which comprises of Performance Ski, Luxury Ski, Layering and Lifestyle, reflects our desire to always be moving forward and innovating, but at the same time staying true to ourselves and to our roots. 6 COLLECTION HIGHLIGHT: FREELITE A revolutionary new technology, Freelite is engineered knitwear that redefines the concept and performance of stretchability. In December 2016 KJUS launched the world s first fully knitted, ultrastretch, ski jacket the KJUS Freelite Jacket. Created from a single yarn, the jacket was designed to feel like a sweater while offering the best weather protection possible. 19 Q & A WITH NICO SERENA, CEO, KJUS Focus: Skiwear industry What is your current appraisal of the skiwear market? The market is still challenging but also offers good opportunities. We see a good recovery in Switzerland and a steady growth in Central Europe, which is extremely important to us. In addition, we have worked hard to position our brand well in Asia (China, Korea and Japan) to ensure a continued growth over the coming years. The timing of this is especially important with the next two Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Asia; Korea in 2018 and Beijing in Do unpredictable winters prove a challenge for KJUS? Unpredictable winters are a challenge for sure. Without snow and cold weather we can do a great job with our collection and everything else yet still face a challenging situation over the winter months. We know we cannot influence the weather so instead we focus ourselves on what we can influence; this is the collection and the partnerships we have with our retailers. Warm winters are not an exception they are the new normal and we have to deal with that. Therefore, it is crucial to offer the right product at the right time. For example, we adjusted our product offering to ensure that we also can sell products in the warmer winter months. Additionally, multi-functional products which work on and off the slopes are important inclusions in our collections as they become more and more sought after by the consumers. Last but not least, we have a strong focus on product innovation. We believe that if you can offer a better product with a high value, the customers are always willing to spend the extra money. What is your current focus? We continue to follow our founding principles, which is to ensure that we develop a skiwear line that is the most advanced and best line on the market. We are also focused on developing a full year brand presence to lower our reliance on winter and snow. In addition, we are placing heavy importance on our digitalization to ensure that we can continue the success of our business model over the next 5 to 10 years. These days you have to be ready to keep up with the latest technologies to offer the right service to your end consumer and partners. For this reason we have committed significant resource to IT, including a dedicated team within KJUS that can deliver what we promise. What is the key to success? Create the right demand for your brand with the right product and activation. Work closely with key partners to ensure that you deliver what the customer is looking for. 24 BIOGRAPHIES Didi Serena, Co-Founder and Chairman, KJUS Didi Serena was born with his feet on skis. During the winter months of his childhood in St. Moritz, he would ski to school every day, later developing a career as a junior ski racer and enjoying a five year stint as a ski instructor. An eager golfer too, Didi built the sportswear brand KJUS on his lifelong passion for sports, combined with a thorough knowledge of fabrics that he gained from over 35 years of experience working in the textile industry. My Lasse Kjus, Co-Founder, KJUS Lasse Kjus, born in Siggerud, Norway, on January, 14 th 1971, is an Olympic Champion and FIS Ski World Cup winning athlete. He retired from active ski racing on March, 16 th 2006 in Åre, Sweden. Today he focuses his passion and expertise on his business career and especially on the premium sports brand KJUS that he co-founded with Didi Serena nearly two decades ago. Since the foundation of LK International AG in 2000 Lasse has been an important partner and shareholder. KJUS has been a member of the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) since 2012 and in 2017 we were extremely proud to be granted Leader status by Foundation for the third consecutive year. The category leader distinguishes members of the foundation who operate at an advanced level and show best practices in complex areas such as living wages and freedom of association. FWF highlights in the yearly Brand Performance Check, which evaluates each members current status: KJUS meets most of FWF s management system requirements and goes beyond several. In the categories Complaints Handling, Information Management, Transparency and Evaluation, KJUS even gets the full score. We aim to achieve high social and environmental standards and provide good working conditions for the people who make our products. To do so, we only collaborate with people who share our beliefs. We keep pushing ourselves to adopt sustainable practices in every level of our business. About the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) More than 90 companies representing 120 brands are members of FWF, an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving conditions for garment workers around the world. FWF s approach takes into account that 100% Fair clothing does not yet exist, and places an emphasis on practical steps brands can take to reduce the risk of problems in factories. Members must sign the 8-point FWF Code of Labor Practices, which is based on UN and ILO principles.
