My name is Wes Preston. I am the Freestyle/ Freeskiing Program Director and Head Coach for the Development (Devo) Team. This is a competitive development program for athletes between the ages of 8-14 year-old. 4 Freestyle/Freeskiing Devo B Program Description and General Schedule Athletes, ages 8-14 years old, male and female, compete in the Eastern Qualifier Series ( B Circuit) through USSA Eastern Freestyle. This is an entry-level youth competition circuit that feeds directly into the USSA Pipeline, which includes the Eastern Championship Series, Junior Nationals, US National Championships, World Cups and, eventually, the Olympics. Athletes travel throughout New England to compete in moguls, aerials and slopestyle. Athletes receive points and rankings on the EQS points list and can qualify for the Tri-State Champs, the East Coast Junior Championships(ages 11-15), and the Young Gun Championships(10yrs old and under). Coaches will help parents and athletes determine which events they should attend and will notify parents if they qualify for Championships. Please see the complete B calendar at (under the freestyle link) for exact competition dates. The entire Eastern Freestyle competition list can be viewed at under the Events link. Athletes in the Devo Program are encouraged to train and compete in slopestyle, moguls, and aerials. The separate skills learned in each of the different disciplines will only improve your athlete s skiing skills and competition readiness. Once an athlete is 15 years old, they choose whether to specialize in either moguls, aerials, or slopestyle. 5 Freestyle/Freeskiing Program Philosophy Program Goals WVBBTS Freestyle/Freeskiing is a full-spectrum training program designed for young athletes age 8 through 24 who participate and compete in slopestyle, mogul skiing, and/or aerials. We provide a progressive sequence of unique training opportunities that develops technically strong skiers and builds proper acrobatic skills, as well as all-around athletics on skis. We pride ourselves on providing superior coaching and an environment conducive to success. We will uphold our philosophy by: Providing outstanding training venues, including USSA mogul, aerial and big air sites, a lift-serviced park, access to an indoor trampoline facility, and year round bagjump. Offering competition opportunities for participants of all levels at our mountain as well as traveling to regional, national and international competitions. Continuing our strong tradition of developing world-class athletes through individualized training programs and commitment to technical skiing and acrobatic progressions. Maintaining a staff of highly qualified coaches, who will be given the opportunity to further their coaching education seasonally. Building confidence, sportsmanship and self-esteem in both recreational and elite athletes. Ensuring that every child, who has the desire to participate, is given that opportunity. And upholding the principles of the Olympic spirit by promoting a way of life based on the joy found in effort and practicing sport in the spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play. About Us Waterville Valley BBTS freestyle/freeskiing programs are a unique opportunity for young people to be involved in the exciting sport of freestyle skiing. This winter, training will take place at Waterville Valley Ski Resort and Waterville Valley Academy. At the ski resort, we build courses in conjunction with Waterville Valley Resort staff for our skiers on many runs: Moguls: Bobby s Run, High Country, Exhibition, Lower Sel s Choice Slopestyle: Exhibition Ski and Snowboard Park and other WV Parks Aerials: Exhibition, Lower Sel s Choice, and Phil s Hill Training Center We look forward to working with each individual athlete. Our qualified coaches and staff will help each athlete set goals for the season and will assess them personally in order to create an individualized training plan. Here at WVBBTS, we are dedicated to supporting all athletes in every way possible so they can maximize their individual potential. Weekend Trampoline Club WVBBTS offers all BBTS skiers additional opportunities in ski acrobatics in the Thomas Barbeau Training Center at Waterville Valley Academy. The fee is $300 per 15 class session. Devo coaches recommend that all of our athletes join trampoline club. Acrobatics are mostly learned on a trampoline before transferring the tricks to snow. This type of training allows athletes to learn each trick as a progression from simple skills up to complex acrobatic maneuvers. Each Session includes 15 one-hour classes. The first day of Trampoline Club is Friday November 27th. The last Day is Thursday, March 24th. See the signup sheet or your confirmation for the class calendar and blackout dates. 5 WVBBTS Devo Program Guide Program Philosophy

online registration instructions. Athletes MUST register online even for Waterville Events. EFCC opens up registration to athletes out of our region on the Monday prior to competition. If you do not register online, the event may fill up and your athlete will be unable to participate. The Phil s Hill Bag Jump Training Center The WVBBTS / SEF BagJump is a high-tech innovative tool for freestyle and snowboard athletes to learn and perfect their tricks! It is a 50 x 50 x 12 multi-chambered, airbag apparatus used for absorbing the impact of landings. This allows athletes to train new and difficult tricks before trying them on snow. WVBBTS is the first snow sports program in the East to offer BagJump training. The WVBBTS Phil s Hill Airbag Training Center at Snow s Mountain, located on the campus of Waterville Valley Academy, is a 275 jumping venue that utilizes artificial snow and the WVBBTS BagJump airbag to train athletes year round in conditions of increased safety. For snowboarders and freestyle skiers, learning a new trick in a controlled environment is key! The first of its kind on the East Coast, the year round training venue has two takeoffs to accommodate beginner and advanced athletes as they launch into the air and land safely on the 50 W x 50 L x 12 H airbag. Athletes slide down the exit area of the airbag, get coaching feedback, then hike back up to do it again. The Thomas Barbeau Training Center The Tom Barbeau Training Center is our new facility located at the Snow s Mountain Venue right next to the Phil s Hill BagJump. This new facility is used for Freestyle, Snowboard, and Alpine athletes. The Barbeau Center has two high-action fly bed trampolines for training and hosts Trampoline Club. There is a new tuning station and space with equipment to host our Burdenko training. This is another great opportunity to have year-round training right here in Waterville Valley. 7 WVBBTS Devo Program Guide Program Philosophy

Code of Conduct WVBBTS Athlete Code of Conduct WVBBTS athletes and any family members participating in the WVBBTS Snowsports Club training program must review and adhere to the WVBBTS Code of Conduct set forth below. WVBBTS/ SEF s athletes are required to abide by the following requirements in their daily conduct: Uphold our organization s core values of Integrity, Teamwork, Learning, and Excellence. Promptness Respect for Waterville Valley Ski Area and WVBBTS property and facilities, including without limitation, cleaning up after oneself in the WVBBTS Clubhouse and Competition Center Respect for official decisions Support of WVBBTS staff, coaches and teammates Good manners (no profanity), courtesy and thoughtfulness Positive attitude and outlook Good sportsmanship No use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, controlled substances or intoxicants Respect for WVBBTS staff, teammates, competitors and members of the Waterville Valley community at large and other communities visited during competitions and camps Observation of any additional rules established by WVBBTS coaches from time to time both on and off the hill Observation of all rules and regulations of Waterville Valley Ski Area and other ski areas where competitions take place Agreement to help WVBBTS coaches as requested (e.g. side slipping a course, putting away equipment, etc.) WVBBTS Parent Code of Conduct The goal of WVBBTS/SEF is to make competitive snowsports fun for athletes of all ages while training and competing in a safe appropriate training environment. It is imperative that athletes, coaches, parents, families, spectators and race officials conduct themselves with the highest degree of sportsmanship. To facilitate this objective, WVBBTS, USSA, NHARA and other associated competitive snow sports organizations have a Code of Conduct for the athletes; WVBBTS has also extended these expectations to include the following Parent s Code of Conduct. Specifically, everyone associated with the BBTS program will be expected to promote a constructive and positive atmosphere both in and away from the training venue. WVBBTS parents should strive to provide positive support and encouragement for their child participating in competitive snow sports with WVBBTS by following this Parents Code of Conduct: I will inform the coach and the appropriate snow sports administrator of any physical, mental or emotional disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or others. I will learn the rules of the competitive snowsport of choice and abide by the policies of WVBBTS, NHARA, USSA, FIS and any other snowsport governing association. My guests and I will be positive role models for my child and encourage sportsmanship, respect and courtesy, and adhere to WVBBTS core values of Integrity, Teamwork, Learning and Excellence. I will place the emotional and physical well-being of my child ahead of a personal desire for them to perform well. I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health or well-being of the athletes. I will teach my child to train and compete by the rules and to resolve conflicts peacefully and diplomatically. I will demand that my child treat other racers, coaches, officials and spectators with respect, regardless of race, color, creed, sex or ability. 17 WVBBTS Devo Program Guide Code of Conduct

I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participants for making a mistake or losing a competition. I will do my very best to make competitive snowsports fun for my child. I will help my child enjoy the competitive snowsports experience by doing whatever I can, such as providing transportation, being a respectful fan or assisting with club duties. I will respect the officials and their authority during races and support coaches working with my child in order to encourage a positive and enjoyable experience for all. I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from vulgar language, drugs and alcohol. 18 WVBBTS Devo Program Guide Code of Conduct I recognize that the relationship between an athlete and a coach can be altered dramatically by the presence of a parent. Therefore, during training and competition sessions, I will do my best to observe from afar. I will refrain from coaching my child or other athletes during training and/or competitions, unless I am asked to assist by a coach. I will not sell or reassign any ticket vouchers received from the mountain for working WVBBTS events. I understand these vouchers have no monetary value and are only to be used by the family they are issued to.

Worker Credits WVBBTS Worker Credit Information & Policy Waterville Valley Black and Blue Trail Smashers Snowsports Educational Foundation ( WVBBTS/ SEF ), is a 501(c)3 non- profit organization, owns and operates Waterville Valley Academy and the WVBBTS Snowsports Club. When we enroll our children in Waterville Valley Academy for three months or longer or we enroll our children in the WVBBTS Snowsports Club, we make two commitments - a financial one to pay our Academy tuition and fees or Club fees, and an equally important one to donate our time towards competition events hosted by WVBBTS/SEF. Any of us who enroll in the Masters Program also make this same type of twopart commitment - financial and to our fellow competitors. Remember there are many ways to fulfill this commitment either on snow or inside and behind the scenes of a competition. You are encouraged to take a leadership role and learn to become a Chief of Race, Chief of Course, or Start/ Finish Referee. Chief of Race and Chief of Course positions are simply learned by observing and being mentored. The Chief of Race and Chief of Course are expected to coordinate and call all workers 3-4 days before the event; these positions also earn 2 credits for each event worked. To become a Start/Finish Referee there is a specific training clinic that will be offered. Please contact us at contact_us@wvbbts.org for further details. All four of these positions require a USSA Alpine Official card that you can apply for at Please read the Worker Credit Policy set forth below. Although the policy provides that you will be charged if worker credit requirements are not met, it is not at all our intention for parents to rely on that option. Why is that? We believe the answer is twofold. First- this is really a parent participation program (not a worker program) and our young athletes will feel this support from each of you both on snow and off. Second- it would be impossible for WVBBTS/SEF to support competitions at our home mountain without the valued support of our parents. WVBBTS/SEF has an exceptional reputation for organizing the best competitions in New England because of the commitment of its Academy parents and WVBBTS Club members in producing these events. Let us all take an active role in upholding that legacy for our children. If you have any questions please e- mail us at contact_us@ wvbbts.org, or refer to the worker credit handbook online at Thank you. WVBBTS/SEF Competition Worker Credit Policy & Agreement Who Must Work? - All members of the weekend WVBBTS program who have children that are enrolled in Mitey Mites, GROMS and U10 through U21 alpine, freestyle and snowboard programs. A widow or widower is required to work ½ of the worker credit requirements. Each event worked is equal to one race credit (unless otherwise provided in the Worker Credit Handbook). Families with children enrolled in multiple programs must earn the larger number of credits. Worker Credit Requirements - Six (6) per family for families with alpine/freestyle U10 through U21 athletes; Four (4) per family for families with snowboard athletes; One (1) per family for families with Mitey Mites/ GROMS athletes only; WVA Students, three (3) months or longer, two (2) worker credits per family; Masters Program athletes when we are hosting a Masters Race you must supply someone to work the race for you. If you are not racing then you are required to work the race. You are only allowed 1 off snow credit per family (i.e., events, making lunches, etc.) You can only work one job, per person, per day. What If You Choose Not to Work - Although not encouraged, families may elect not to work and pay $300 per worker credit requirement at the time of the annual application submission (in the case of WVA families, election must be made at the time of submission of the WVA Enrollment Contract and payment must be made on or before November 1, 2015). Not fulfilling the race worker obligation, and not paying the fee in advance, will result in an additional fee of $100 per worker credit (equaling a total of $400 per worker credit). What If You Sign Up and Don t Show - After a member or Academy parent signs up for an event, 19 WVBBTS Devo Program Guide Worker Credits

he or she may change event(s) two weeks prior to the event. Within two (2) weeks, it is the member s or Academy parent s responsibility to find a substitute. If he or she cannot find a substitute and does not work the event, they will be assessed a charge of $400 per event at the end of the ski season which will be due net 30 from date of invoice. If this amount is not received prior to the start of the 2015/2016 winter season then the member will not 20 WVBBTS Devo Program Guide Worker Credits be allowed to join the Club or WVA until payment is received. Sign Ups will be held online, starting on a date to be determined. You will receive two (2) s with information for the start/opening time and date for the sign up process. A third will announce the opening of worker credit sign ups. Worker Credit Handbook - By execution of this Race Worker Credit Policy/Agreement the undersign.

Concussion Policy WVBBTS / WVA Concussion Policy Revised 8/10/15 The first priority of WVBBTS and WVA training programs is the health and well-being of every athlete. Concussion, also known as traumatic brain injury (TBI), occurs in all snowsports. Traumatic Brain Injury can pose a serious threat to an athlete s cognitive and mental health if managed poorly, and therefore, has risen to the top of the medical community s concerns. The WVBBTS and WVA Concussion Policy addresses two critical areas: 1. Education for coaches, athletes, and parents 2. Medical intervention by health professionals This policy is consistent with the latest recommendations of the medical community. Visit the websites below. Read, learn and heed! All concussions are serious! The WVBBTS and WVA Concussion Policy for Athletes and Parents is: All athletes are required to wear properly fitted and correctly worn helmets approved for snow sports for all on-snow and dry-slope activities. The athlete may return to training and competition only after medical clearance by a health professional in writing to WVBBTS, either to WVA Headmaster s office for Academy athletes, or to the Club Manager for BBTS Weekend Athletes. The WVBBTS and WVA Concussion Protocol for WVBBTS Coaches is: Should an athlete sustain a concussion, even a mild one, the athlete s coach, or in the case of a competition, the Technical Delegate or Chief of Competition shall immediately remove the athlete from further training or competitive activities. The coach or meet official must immediately summon Ski Patrol. The coach must inform the parent as soon as possible. The coach or meet official must report the incident to the WVBBTS front office and complete the WVBBTS Injury Report Form. The coach or meet official must report the incident to USSA Competition Services. Prior to the athlete s returns to his or her coaching group, the coach must ascertain that the athlete has properly followed medical clearance protocols. To learn about concussion in sports, go to: To review the USSA Concussion Policy for Members, go to: WHAT IS A CONCUSSION? A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury. Concussions are caused by a bump or blow to the head. Even a ding, getting your bell rung, or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious. You can t see a concussion. Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms yourself, seek medical attention right away. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION? If your child has experienced a bump or blow to the head during a game or practice, look for any of the following signs of a concussion: SYMPTOMS REPORTED BY ATHLETE: Headache or pressure in head Nausea or vomiting Balance problems or dizziness Double or blurry vision Sensitivity to light Sensitivity to noise Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy Concentration or memory problems Confusion Just not feeling right or is feeling down 21 WVBBTS Devo Program Guide Concussion Policy

SIGNS OBSERVED BY PARENTS/ GUARDIANS: Appears dazed or stunned Is confused about assignment or position Forgets an instruction Is unsure of game, score, or opponent Moves clumsily Answers questions slowly Loses consciousness (even briefly) Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes DANGER SIGNS Be alert for symptoms that worsen over time. Your child or teen should be seen in an emergency department right away if s/he has: One pupil (the black part in the middle of the eye) larger than the other Drowsiness or cannot be awakened A headache that gets worse and does not go away Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination Repeated vomiting or nausea Slurred speech Convulsions or seizures Difficulty recognizing people or places Increasing confusion, restlessness, or agitation Unusual behavior Loss of consciousness (even a brief loss of consciousness should be taken seriously) WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD HAS A CONCUSSION? SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION RIGHT AWAY. A health care professional will be able to decide how serious the concussion is and when it is safe for your child to return to regular activities, including sports. KEEP YOUR CHILD OUT OF PLAY. Concussions take time to heal. Don t let your child return to play the day of the injury and until a health care professional says it s OK. Children who return to play too soon - while the brain is still healing - risk a greater chance of having a second concussion. Repeat or later concussions can be very serious. They can cause permanent brain damage, affecting your child for a lifetime. TELL YOUR CHILD S COACH ABOUT ANY PREVIOUS CONCUSSION. Coaches should know if your child had a previous concussion. Your child s coach may not know about a concussion your child received in another sport or activity unless you tell the coach. HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD PREVENT A CONCUSSION OR OTHER SERIOUS BRAIN INJURY? Ensure that they follow their coach s rules for safety and the rules of the sport. Encourage them to practice good sportsmanship at all times. Make sure they wear the right protective equipment for their activity. Protective equipment should fit properly and be well maintained. Wearing a helmet is a must to reduce the risk of a serious brain injury or skull fracture. However, helmets are not designed to prevent concussions. There is no concussion- proof helmet. So, even with a helmet, it is important for kids and teens to avoid hits to the head. HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL SAFELY AFTER A CONCUSSION? Children and teens who return to school after a concussion may need to: Take rest breaks as needed Spend fewer hours at school Be given more time to take tests or complete assignments Receive help with schoolwork Reduce time spent reading, writing, or on the computer Talk with your child s teachers, school nurse, coach, speech- language pathologist, or counselor about your child s concussion and symptoms. As your child s symptoms decrease, the extra help or support can be removed gradually. JOIN THE CONVERSATION Content Source: CDC s Heads Up Program.
