Division 6 Alpine 2018 was the third year of the Division 6 Alpine event. 116 Boys and 113 Girls entered the event which was an increase of 19% on 2017 entries. The success of the Division 6 Alpine event in increasing participation and also reducing the size of the Division 5 events has been an overwhelming success. 300 Alpine Div 5 v Div 6 entries Div 5 Boys Div 6 Boys Div 5 Girls Div 6 Girls
Alpine Challenger events The Alpine Challenger event trial continued in The Challenger event is offered to students that want to take part in a more relaxed less competitive Alpine event. The event did not qualify participants for the nationals or school championship points however was awarded individual and team medals. 29 Girls and 50 Boys entered the event. Feedback on the success of the Challenger event has been positive as has the smaller field size in the Div 3 Alpine events. As the event concept and awareness is still evolving. It is hoped that positive experiences in the 2017 and 2018 events will encourage more participants to take part. In particular it will be considered by the Victorian Interschools Committee that large schools must enrol their D teams and below in the Challenger event and only enter the schools top three teams in the Alpine event.
Slopestyle events 2018 was the third year of the running of Interschools Slopestyle Ski and Snowboard events. The Interschools Slopestyle course was once again built in the Skyline terrain park and received very positive feedback on its design and appropriate level of difficulty. Live scoring of the events was also successfully implemented for the second time. Participation in Interschools Slopestyle Ski events increased to 142 entries up by 28% and Slopestyle snowboard events increased to 82 entries up by 52%. Participation is expected to continue to increase over the coming years. Qualification levels for the National Interschools has been amended to a minimum score requirement.
Cross Country Due to extreme wind the Victorian Cross Country Interschools were hosted on the Village Canyons course. Similarly to 2017 the event was run as a time trial with 15 sec intervals. The events ran very well and the live timing was well received by the wider Cross Country community. A SSA Cross Country Technical Advisor attended the event and made technical recommendations in conjunction with the Event Manager and head of the Race and Events Department. Public shelter as well as food and beverage tents were in place between the village lodges.
Moguls Following the introduction of the 60 point scoring system in 2016 a two phase mogul format was implemented in 2017 and again in Following a first run for all competitors the top 15 ranked skiers were judged in a second run in reverse order. The best of their two runs counted towards the competitors result. This best of two run format is in use around the world at a development level and worked well at Interschools level. One of the positives of the best of two run format is that competitors will at times look to vary the jump tricks that they execute. A future planned permanent mogul judges stand on Chamois will further improve the speed and efficiency of live scoring and judging conditions.
Alpine In an ongoing effort to maximise the racing conditions on the Alpine race courses a sideslipping protocol was introduced in This consisted of a staff member collecting parents, coaches, spectators or participants to join them in a coordinated course slip several times per run. Cold temperatures assisted with the maintenance of course conditions however the general state of racing conditions was greatly improved by the sideslipping protocol. All events were run to schedule with live timing once again providing great information to all involved.
Live Timing and Scoring Following a trial of live timing on one event site in 2016 live timing and scoring was implemented on all Victorian and Australian Interschools event sites in 2017 and again in The software purchased for each event site made it possible for all timed and scored events to be viewed through the Snowracer.com.au website. This was again extremely successful and well received by schools and parents. In 2018 there were in excess of 27,000 first run starts on Snowracer.com.au for Live Scoring and Live Timing. An increase of 40% on 2017 Further software refinements and possible outdoor display options will be explored over summer.
Thank you to The 210 School Coordinators who s efforts and passion make the Interschools possible The 500 Volunteers that make the Interschools possible The Schools support of the Victorian Interschools The Buller Interschools Association (BIA) made up of Buller Ski Lifts, Mt Buller Resort Management Board, Chamber of Commerce and the Mt Buller Rate Payers Association. The financial support of the event by the Mt Buller Community through the BIA members is significant and plays a vital role in the accessibility and the quality of school and family experience at the Victorian Interschools. The Mt Buller Race and Events Dept, Team Buller Riders, Mountain Operations and Grooming teams for their extraordinary effort in the preparation of all event sites. Ski and Snowboard Australia for the commitment to the ongoing development of the entry system, live timing technology and result management. We wish all of our students and families a fun and safe summer or northern hemisphere winter and look forward to seeing you all for an amazing 2019 winter.
