DICKY BEACH SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB MAY NEWSLETTER 2013 Ph: (07) Fax: (07) PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Another season is almost over and it seems we have hardly caught our breath and we are on the go again. It has been quite a successful season even though a large part was under the influence of some very trying weather conditions which effected patrols and competition. Thankfully we lived up to our vision of zero preventable deaths on our beach through the good work the patrolling members do each weekend. For that I thank you profusely and I am sure so do the bathing public. Members should also be thankful for the excellent training they receive to enable them to do their job, some thing many take for granted. Competitively it was a good year as we were well represented at all carnivals and at all levels. Medals may have evaded us but then it is not always about winning but more so about having a go. The actual results show that our competitors aren t far off the pace and this gives them something to strive for in the coming season. We had a busy year with the scouts, CanTeen, Sauvetuer Beglais (the French team), Bundaberg SLSC and 2 camps from Pine Rivers High. Each of these groups were high in their praise of the Dicky Beach SLSC and its members so please take a bow. The IRB teams are in the midst of their competition season and are doing fairly well. Please show your support by dropping in to a carnival to watch the ducks in action. The Annual General meeting is not far away when the year will be reviewed, Office bearers elected and then the dinner and presentation night will top off a great weekend. I do encourage all members to come to both of these events and be a part of a great club. Take on a club position as we need all positions to be filled to share the management load. I want to create positions of assistants to a number of office bearers so that we have succession and continuity in administration of the club. At the AGM the Management Committee will present the Strategic Plan for the next 3 years. This will give the club direction, certainty and financial goals, putting the club on a stable and sustainable footing. Then we can plan for club extensions and membership benefits. A few hearty soles are still doing some training in the cool of the morning so drop in for a swim (no waves) and keep your fitness in check. As I am one of them and with that I will see you on the beach Dicky Beach. Tom Holmes President

BETWEEN THE FLAGS With the season now closed it is time to reflect on what we have achieved during the summer months. No drowning s in our patrolled area Continued high quality training Some significant high potential rescues Closed beaches due to high surf conditions Participation in local community activities (Scouts and Canteen) Some significant equipment purchases (4WD, Boards) Promotion of a number of new Patrol captains High level of participation at competitions by member A general increase in Members meeting patrolling hour obligations Great participation by the youth in activities and leadership Camps A general increase in the care and maintenance of our gear and facilities on past years Continued Participation in Branch support operations by members Continued participation by members in Branch State and National operations A very successful Junior Activities year A continued high standard in the Buhk Wilkes inspections We have again demonstrated that as a club we are well rounded and truly give opportunities to anyone who wishes to take up the challenge. We need to be proud of what we have achieved and the respect we have as a club in the wider Surf Life Saving organization. I encourage you all to attend the AGM and the awards dinner. We have much to celebrate and we all deserve a party for another great season. I will be standing down as Club captain after 5 years and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have assisted guided or supported during my time in the role. There have been too many to mention and I am sure to forget to mention somebody. We are in a great shape in terms of membership, gear and equipment and I am sure the club will continue to grow and develop as we enter the next phase of improvement and growth. Ability is what you re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it. Lou Holtz See you all at the end of season celebration. Cheers John Palmer. Club Captain DBSLSC

CTO REPORT We have come to the end of another season and the training department has achieved so much. I would like to thank all of our trainers and assessors for a job well done in improving the knowledge and skills of our Dicky Beach members. An over view of our achievements this year include: Began the season strongly with our infamous Bronze/SRC live in camp. Conducted two Pine Rivers State High School Bronze/SRC courses. Mal Coyle continued to deliver the surf awareness program to Currimundi State School. Ran the following club courses: Bronze/SRC, IRB Crewman and Drivers, Radio Operators, ATV, Tractor, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate, Applied First Aid and Age Managers. Introduced two new awards to club members - Spinal Management and Pain Management with the Spinal Management course being run as a partnership between Mets and Dicky Beach. Ran Observers courses for our Radio Operators and Age Managers. Strong nipper program with the Under 13 s obtaining their nationally accredited Resuscitation Certificate. While the season is over for most of us, our trainers and assessors have been upgrading their training awards from BSZ and TAA to TAE. As from 1 July 2013 all of our trainers and assessors must hold the TAE training and assessing awards. I would also like to congratulate our new trainers this season: Sam Smith, Karlie Lenz and Jessica Simpson. Welcome to the team. Many of our members have also attended branch run courses such as Pain Management, Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management and TAE Trainers and Assessors awards. The most noteworthy goes to Lindsay Smith and Karlie Lenz who were awarded their Gold Medallion this year. Keep an eye out for the annual report where I will give a full list of training achievements for the season. See you on the beach! Ross Gibb Chief Training Officer Phone: ross_gibb@bigpond.com

YOUTH YAK MEMBER XCHANGE Bundaberg Surf Life Saving Club had a youth member exchange visit to Dicky Beach SLSC recently. The entire program, food and activities were all organised by Sam Smith. Sam did an amazing organisational job and has been lauded by Bundaberg YDO Wendy Johnson and all of the other members from Bundaberg SLSC. Included in the exchange was a trip up to Kondalilla Falls, a visit to Surf Comm, and Bundaberg SLSC members joined our patrols on the weekend. Sam was a former member of Bundaberg before the family transferred to the Sunshine Coast. Well done Sam, the feedback has been fantastic. The youth of our club also joined with the Bundaberg SLSC for a night of fun at the Big Kart Track where it is always a bit competitive. AWARDS Our Junior Club Captains Jess Simpson and Sam Smith have been recognised for their outstanding services to Surf Life Saving and will be awarded for their commitment to community service at the National Day of Thanksgiving for Volunteers ceremony at Kings Beach Amphitheatre on Saturday 25 th May. Jess and Sam will receive their recognition awards from MP Fiona Simpson. DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS A total of 10 participants and 3 leaders represented the club at the Sunshine Coast Branch U14-15 Leadership Development Camp held at Alexandra Headlands Conference Centre recently. Program Co-ordinator: Rob Campbell Leaders: Participants Jessica Simpson, Ann Sophie-Sullivan, Doug Simpson Kye Doyle, Sam Kerr, Zephyr Jenkins, Dane Moles, Liam Kelly, Alisha Bausch, Zoey Parfrement, Cara Woolnough, Taron Najlepszy, Kodie Burke Camp Commando was again a joint Sunshine Coast Branch and Wide Bay Capricorn joint initiative, with a total of 140 members taking part. The behaviour of our participant members and leadership shown by our nominated leaders was exemplary. The participants were exposed to many of the facets of the organisation including Operations Support and the helicopter service, including a mock rescue of 2 camp participants by Lifesaver 6, a dose of the Red and Yellow from Danny Hoyland, a major exercise in non verbal communication, presentations on leadership by the Australian army and multiple army leadership challenges. There were lots of team challenges including duck racing, tug o war and relays with a twist, and minute to win it, lifesaver game and speed dating. The Dicky Beach contingent excelled in the Leader down rescue, treatment, and retrieval scenario a testament to Dicky Beach SLSC focus on Developing lives that save lives. Dicky Beach SLSC had more members than any of the 22 other clubs at this program. CONTINUE OVER...

Youth Yak continued The Surf Life Saving Queensland U18-25 Leadership Excellence Program was held in Brisbane between the 11 th and 14 th April, Program Co-ordinator: Leaders: Participants Rob Campbell Caitlin Knight Jessica Simpson, Nick Stevens, Ann-Sophie Sullivan This program started off with a day for leaders and mentors development. Part of this is that without notice and on a very meagre budget mentors and leaders have to prepare a themed meal entree and main and all 4 meals had to fit together with each other. Next is a layered cake that represents something moving from reality to aspiration. They chose themselves as the base... making icing figurines of themselves in club uniforms, moving to the things that are building their lives, such as education and their ability to inspire and then to the higher level of their life saving lives with a red and yellow quartered cap. The next day was spent in the main with SLSQ Director Darren Woodward talking personal development, goal setting and developing business acumen. All program attendees took part in the speed dating with senior SLSQ staff and Open Forum. This was very beneficial for Caitlin on her journey to become a leader in life and life saving. Over the next two days there were a series of workshops with Queensland Police Service, Media Management and training, Emergency Management response and the team challenge of the Amazing Race throughout inner city Brisbane. With the reigning Summer Surf Girl and 8 of this year s Jupiter s Summer Surf girls it was a great opportunity to go out and network. The next day included a talk by an ADF Captain who was involved in several tours of Afghanistan and his talk was themed: Decision Making Under Fire. He recounted several front line engagements with the Taliban and the decision making process under fire and then linked those situations to making the right decisions on the beach. Caitlin Knight, with her Dicky Beach figurine and the awesome layer cake produced by the leadership team at the SLSQ Leadership Excellence Program Continued over

Youth Yak continued GET WELL SOON We continue to wish one of our youth stalwarts Brando Coleman a speedy recovery from his recent and serious health problem. He recently underwent surgery in the Princess Alexandra Hospital and is on the road to recovery, By virtue of his positive outlook and his favourite nurse - NURSE JACKI. Dicky Beach SLSC can be very proud of the achievements of their youth in the 2012/13 season. They have continuously backed the club, whether it be stepping up to take on leadership positions, patrolling, competing, developing their leadership skills, organising major events that financially benefit the club, networking with other clubs and attending meetings. I am always reluctant to make special mention of achievements by our youth but one of the season stand outs was that three of our youth, Karlie Lenz, Ann-Sophie Sullivan and Tim Dunn gave up 5 days of their time to travel to Bundaberg and help out with the emergency flood recovery effort. They were inspirational in what they did, being amongst the first to go into the devastated North Bundaberg area to assist. If they weren t helping with first aid casualties they were at the scene handing out water, gloves, shovels, antiseptic hand cleaner, food, squeegees, brooms and storage bags. They were an emotional shoulder for some residents to lean on and when they weren t doing that, they were in gum boots and mud helping to clean out houses. They were in terrible conditions but they were outstanding in a time of great humanitarian need...and they are only 18. Karlie and Tim assisted by Elliot Heads SLSC members loading up the new ute at the North Bundaberg Control Station. CONTINUED OVER

Youth Yak continued IMPORTANT DATE CLAIMER: The Sunshine Coast Branch Youth Ball is on again, bigger and better than the event last year where the youth of Dicky Beach excelled. 8 BOATIES NEWS Club members 16 years or older are invited to attend a meeting to hear about exciting plans for the Boat section 2013/2014 season. The meeting will be held 9th June at 9:00am( meet outside boat shed), where will be looking at forming preliminary crews to get training under way. All welcome. CHAPLAINS CORNER ATTITUDE Your attitude to life shows not only who you are, but the quality of life you will have. I saw an on an amazing young boy [approx. 10 years old] who had artificial legs from above his knees. His parents undoubtedly are very positive as well. He plays Golf, Water skis, Rides a Three wheel bike and Horses, is a blade runner on the Track and involved in Ice Hockey and Baseball. He has a great smile and obviously enjoys a positive attitude. Being grumpy and obnoxious doesn t help you or anyone near you. It will definitely not get you any sympathy particularly when you are part of a team. Get over it quickly, lighten up and live. God bless, Granty [Ph ]

LAST PATROL On Sunday 5th May was the last patrol for the season and was a Memorial Day for those we have lost in Qld waters. Unfortunately, it was a wet and cool day but we had a good number of members who turned out. Thank you to the boaties who took the wreaths out and placed in the water.
