2 President Elect Tracy Tinsley convened the meeting, lead the pledge of allegiance and Mike Riddle recited the Four-Way Test. Greetings and Introductions: Guests: Our speaker Josh Ellington from Queen of the Valley Medical Center (QVMC), Aneela Choudary the guest of Tom Webber, and Kathryn Maxwell from Martinsville, IN Rotary. Tracy and Kathryn Maxwell Aneela and Tom Happy Dollars: Tom Webber is celebrating his 50 th Wedding Anniversary. Steve Simich and Al Verstuyft contributed Tim Tebow dollars for different reasons. Aneela Choudary celebrated being at our meeting. Ross Macky celebrated a great Monday night of bowling! John Kempkey was happy to be recovering from a New Year s eve bout with pneumonia. Club Notes: John Duser passed around a get-well card for Bill Bresciani. Tracy repeated the call for Wine donations for Chef s Market and the Napa Homebrewers Classic. Donation letters are available from Bill. Save Apr 18 End Polio Day with a concert by Lacy J. Dalton Tom Webber reported on NEWS (Napa Emergency Women's Services) although they have CO detectors (2); they needed some items from fire inspection including another CO. We need a work party for painting, electrical and other tasks. The assembly of 3 bikes will occur later. 2

3 Tom Webber reported on Immunization on Polio: The India Plan 40 seats next week that are filled and another 40 will be available in April. This is coordinated through Bretford Howard in Oakland. India is now the least of the problem with few new cases compared to Pakistan/Afghanistan s 300 cases. Tom Webber and Tracy Tinsley reiterated Bike trail safety as some rowdies with guns/gangs on the trail has been reported. There will be an organizational meeting for Homebrewers Classic. Kathi Metro and Tracy Tinsley Josh Ellington Josh Ellington from Queen of the Valley Medical Center (QVMC), is the American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center Coordinator. Josh spoke on the importance of performing CPR. Every 90 seconds there is a sudden cardiac arrest incident. Paramedics manage cardiac arrest with limited crew. Josh showed a full crew of a hospital type code blue. He emphasize the importance of team-drills and drilling like the NASCAR pit crew approach; one person for one task. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the sudden cessation (and often unexpected) of all blood flow due to complete heart failure. The Treatment for SCA - high quality CPR 3

4 - Early defibrillation (shut everything down for a few second and heart restarts). It takes 6-8 minutes for call out. The first 90 seconds to 3 minutes is very critical to survival. You need to step up and act. CPR is typically performed on family members. Mouth to mouth (mtm) is no longer part of guidelines because you can move 21% oxygen air by compressions vs % oxygen air by mtm. Mouth to mouth (mtm) causes more harm and using only compressions now more people perform CPR. QVMC offers free CPR classes. Shock as soon as possible. Demo auto defibrillator. 5 Two steps to save a life: call 911; push hard and fast in the center of the chest. The Scope of Problem SCA events per year in the US 2-3 SCA events per day in Napa Survival rate 12-20% hospital 4-7% public area Las Vegas/Lake Tahoe Casinos: 50-73% First shock delivered with 3 min. Seattle is excellent place for CPR/AED with a 40% response whereas a 10% in the Bay Area. The QVMC goal is the casino goal of 50-73% survival What can we do? Know how to call for help since Vallejo CHP receives 4000 calls/day you can be on hold of minutes, whereas Napa Sheriff emergency is only two rings! All people should use the sheriff s number and have it in your cell phone. Learns Hand Only CPR Tech and Use the AED. QVMC will start placing AEDs in schools, then place where more than 50 people congregate. Restrooms are often places for a heart attack. Spread the word!! From the Q&A: AED at Costco costs $1500 with a 5 year battery that does 200 shocks. Aspirin is advised during heart attacks for thinning the blood. 5
