1 WELCOME TO THE DECEMBER NEWSLETTER... MERRY CHRISTMAS OFFICE CHRISTMAS CLOSURE The festive season is here at last! The tree that sits in the designated corner adorned with decorations waits patiently to be filled with an array of beautiful gifts. It is such a great time of the year to spend time with family, exchange a few gifts, eat a trailer of food and after a few orange whips open up the chest of skeletons in the closet to enjoy the conversation that unfolds. The information coming through from the north pole is that Uppy has coerced the man in the red suit to arrive by boat onto our beach this Sunday morning. It has been said that Santa insisted on the row boat as he is a greeny underneath that suit. The rowing section of the club have been outstanding this year maintaining one of the more traditional club values of fundraising. Friday the 18th will see more than $2500 go up for grabs with the chase the Ace. To compliment this dash for cash we have the major draw for the 100 club. The feeling of returning home tonight with a few more dollars in the pocket would certainly have an influence over the size of turkey in the oven next week. Dare to dream, hey? The gossip is that there will be plenty of other prizes as well. The patrols so far this year have been busy providing a safe environment for our public. This month has been a windy little number however this has not deterred the local community from coming down for a dip. The Abalone patrols have had their challenges at Ocean Reef with one rescue last week. The conditions where less that average and for one lucky fisherman he was plucked off the reef by our President. Remember Christmas day is a voluntary patrol. It s a great time to see the international smattering of people who proudly represent their country of origin while forgetting to apply sunscreen and drink Champagne in the sun. Well done to our volunteers, you may not think you make a difference but the evidence certainly tells a different story. This weekend at the club will see the ski paddlers Christmas paddle up to the Hillarys Marina. This is an annual fancy dress affair that promises to be a hefty challenge with 15knot (plus) breezes at 7am. The seasonal costumes will be on show, albeit some will be MA+. Fun, fun, fun. Then Sunday is the Ted Scott event. Our oldest and most traditional race. Good luck to everyone who enters. Garry Addison is stepping down from the role of Facilities Manager. This is the bloke with a big smile and a more than generous nature. Great job buddy. From here we look to Christmas then New Year and around we go again. The three wise men Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar had their time under the bright light. Never heard from them again. One hit wonders maybe? Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of the little mental elves that help put some sense into this newsletter. Ed The Office Will be closing for the Christmas break on Tuesday 22nd at 2pm and will reopen on Monday 4th at 10am A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our members from Karen, Jen and Gemma BAR HOURS The bar will be closed: Friday (Xmas Day) Sunday Friday (New Years Day) Normal trading will recommence: Sunday , 11am - 1pm and from 5pm. 4 JUNIORS Well the festive season is well and truly in full swing and we are halfway through another season. It s difficult to know where the time goes but for many, our days are filled with training commitments; school runs and work. What sets this routine aside from many other mums and dads across the world in a similar situation is the very surroundings that make it so much more palatable. We are a nation that is truly blessed. We had 86 children registered for the first SunSmart Junior Carnival at Coogee beach on Sunday 6, a 22% increase from last year. Our competitors, some as young as 9 years were to be commended as they battled on through horrendous weather wet sand and choppy surf conditions rising to the challenge. Very few braved the pontoon that day. A huge thanks to all the AGM s; assistants; officials; parents and of course water safety, your positivity, resilience and ability to remain focussed on the day was incredible to see. I know the weather gods will be on our side as we head to Sorrento for carnival number 2 on Saturday 9. Let s see if we can beat the 85 and have over 100 Mullaloo nippers on the beach competing. This Friday is the Christmas event for the U7-U10 age group with Al Kazam the magic man. Doors open-without-magic at 5:15pm and the show starts at 5:30pm. This promises to be a magical event for the kids. A $5 entry fee is payable on the door. The club lounge is also open and will no doubt be packed to the rafters being the last Friday of the year before the visit from the big man in red. Our second event this month is the Christmas Eve paddle. Yes for those that remember from last year, its back on!!!! Open to competent board paddlers Malibu s; Nipper boards; surf skis; SUP s; boaties and with an IRB or two as well. Pop on a Christmas hat and join us for this epic recreational paddle along our coastline from Hillarys to Mullaloo. A great opportunity to tire the kids out before the big day. For more detailed information on this event please events@mullaloosurf.com.au Please note that our last club day for 2015 will be on Sunday 20, the day of the Ted Scott Marathon. During the morning, Mr Claus has found time in his busy schedule to visit us once again whilst Mrs Claus stays home in the North Pole supervising the elves in the workshop. Look out for him in the ocean. Our first club day for 2016 will be held on Sunday 3 and its full steam ahead from then on until the finishing line... Finally thank you once again to all those folk who willingly put up their hand to get involved and support the club in its day to day operations. It is a great family focussed community and a positive environment for the kids. As you read this newsletter I will be experiencing a chilly white Christmas, -8 in Whistler and will be returning to warmer climes to thaw out on Sunday 3. Have a great festive season, wear your party hats and have loads of fun. Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. See you on the beach! Jackie Eley TED SCOTT MARATHON - SUNDAY 20 DECEMBER Ted Scott Marathon is almost upon us! It s an event that promotes inclusivity within our club, everyone can have a go in some capacity! The race has 9 swimming sections totalling 3km and 5 beach running sections totalling 9km! That s what the Seniors, including U14 s will be doing, setting off at 9.15am. Juniors will complete modified courses according to age group and will start at intervals after the seniors. For those of you who are unable to compete, your involvement could be in a voluntary capacity. Set up starts at 5.30am. During the race we need first aiders at South Point and at the finish line, people to man water stations at North Point, South Point and in front of the club, recorders for registrations and at the finish line and very importantly help with the pack up - which is huge! Please contact Dawn on events@mullaloosurf.com.au Left: 2014 Ted Scott Marathon start Page 4

Instructions on how to use these items are demonstrated at the Skills Maintenance sessions or there are some great instruction videos on Youtube. When you are next on patrol have a look through the kit so you are aware of what is in there. 6 SURF SPORTS Already half way through the season and soooo much has happened!!! Please note there will be no Club Day on 27. Pre-season Grand Final Cup 21 Scarboro After a cool winter with varying degrees of conditions all culminating in the Grand Final. Mullaloo had some good results despite the small group of regular attendees. The following members received $100 Engine vouchers for placing first over the series: Wes Gould 1st in Open board race, Ben Jones 1st in Youth ski, Callan Smith 1st in both Youth surf race and Development Ironman. Ben Jones also placed 2nd in the Open ironman and 3rd in the Open board. Wes Gould and Paige Wood both placed 3rd in the Youth ski event. In the Development category, Ryley Gardener placed 2nd in the board, Ben Hillen 2nd in beach flags (although we d dispute that he came first ) and Cooper Schulz 3rd in flags, Kane Smith coming 3rd in the surf race. A fantastic effort for all the athletes. A big thank you to our officials throughout the series with opportunities to try various roles and beaches. Also a big thank you to our support crew of parents who handled craft tight vests and all and Team managers that kept the cohort relatively in line!! State Team Representatives Results from the pre-season series contributed to 3 Mullaloo competitors being selected for the State team and as it happens, also as the Manly/Freshwater representatives Ben Jones, Wes Gould and Callan Smith. Well done boys! Premiership Series round 1, Floreat The first of the premiership series saw the introduction of U14s into these senior carnivals. With 36 competitors, a small but competitive cohort contributed to Mullaloo coming 4th overall. More points could have been gained but a distinct lack of female numbers in the U19s and very few beach competitors, along with march past and belt racing that were also held but not contested by us. Some top performances from Wes Gould 1st in both open board and U19 ski, Callan Smith coming 1st in the U17 surf race and 2nd in both the U17 ironman and open surf race at just 15! Paige Wood fought for 2nd in the U17 ski. Kane Smith had a cracker of a day with top 3 placings in all his events - individual and teams. U14s Ellie Marlow, Cooper Schulz, Luke Tristan and Ryley Gardener are certainly ones to watch for the season, all with top 2 positions. Thanks to our Team Managers Katrina West, Jenni Wood, Carlo Tenaglia and newbies Ian Curry and Rick Hawke great job! Well done to our officials and thank you to Helen Ioanna and Jesper Rasmussen for providing water safety services on behalf of the Club. Surf Boat Racing Small numbers at competitions due to various pre-booked holidays from each team but the New Year will have several crews in the line up. The Open men s crew Pirates - are off to a good start making finals in the last two Navy Series carnivals. Our development crews are progressing well and we will hopefully see them competing in the New Year! Open Water State Championships, Sunday Champion Lakes We had 3 Club members contest the Open Water Swim State Championships 5km swim at Champion Lakes. Ben Jones came 2nd in the Open category, Byron Kimber 3rd in U14 and Lillyan Rosich 5th in the U14s. Congratulations to you all, great effort! Aussies Australian Championships April in QLD, Gold Coast Planning is in full swing for Youth, Open and IRB Aussies. If you have not expressed interest in any of these competitions and have thought about going, please contact Sandy at surfsports@mullaloosurf.com.au Patrol Hours for Competition Please ensure you have the required number of patrol hours for competition. If you are unsure what this means or how to find out how many you have or require, please contact Sandy at surfsports@mullaloosurf.com.au You only have until 31, 2015 to get them! Page 6
