1 WELCOME TO THE NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER... With our Editor being away overseas for a few weeks, I m happy to write his column for this edition of the Mullaloo Surf News. If you hadn t noticed, the Ed and I share the duties of writing the opening column each fortnight. I m sure that the Ed will share some of his mystical experiences, and some not so mystical, with us in the next edition. As you would have noticed in the last couple of weeks, our beach has suddenly become very busy, especially on Sunday mornings. Welcome back all of the Juniors and their parents to our Club days and mid-week training. It great to see so many excited faces on the beach. It s also great to see so many volunteers helping out each week, providing setup and water safety, as well as the Age Group Managers and Assistants. If you re not currently involved as a volunteer, perhaps you might like to join the social or fundraising committees or help out in the office. Remember, as a volunteer organisation, we need your help to provide the services that we do, and if you can spare us an hour or two, it would be most helpful. If you are interested, please contact the office and leave your details. I recently came back from Bali, where members of our Club, volunteer their time to assist the Badung Balawista Surf Life Saving in training their lifeguards. Over 80 candidates were put through the course and it was great to see more lifeguards graduating to keep the beaches and pools safe in Bali. Mullaloo SLSC has been assisting for over 20 years with training in Bali along with many other Clubs. It is our Volunteers, however, which make up a large portion of the trainers and assessors now. This year, Mullaloo SLSC signed a sister Club Agreement with Badung Balawista SLS to cement our relationship and further develop the cooperation between our Club s in the future. We will be hopeful in developing more programs in the future, and who knows, perhaps a carnival on Kuta Beach someday (barring any volcanic eruptions!). Our lifesaving team have been very busy with the Abalone season starting last Sunday. Our IRB crew effected a very successful rescue of a person washed off the reef. Without our help, there could have been a tragedy. Well done to Mark Anderson and Laurie demamiel. Our Senior competition group has also been very busy over the last few weeks competing at the pre-season cup events. We have had some fantastic results by a young team of competitors, competing in some tough conditions. Their enthusiasm this early in the season is simply fantastic. November is going to be a very busy month for Mullaloo, with an Ironman Series, Ski Series, Board and Swim Series and Sprint Series events being held on our beach. The first round of the Navy Surf Boat series will be held at Mullaloo and then, towards the end of the month, we will have the West Australian round of the Wave Warriors series. With this many events being run at the Club, we will need to make sure that we have plenty of volunteers to help out with the setup, pack-up, water safety, officials and general assistance. So, when the call goes out please offer your assistance and make these events successful for your Club. See you on soon the beach. Carlo Tenaglia, Proudly supported by Page 1

4 JUNIORS Well the season is now in full swing and it is rewarding to see so many members accessing the services that we have to offer. It is also pleasing to see the volunteers in good numbers stepping up when rostered on for duties. Thank you- your contribution is what enables the club to offer so much. Last week a small group of us headed down to North Cottesloe and participated in the Euroz North Cottesloe Cold Water Classic swim, swimming for the Leukaemia Foundation. Over 250 swimmers in total attended the event with some big names in WA swimming turning out. It was great to see that level of support on a Saturday afternoon for such a worthy cause. Well done to Patrick Eley and Darcey Brookes who came 1st and 3rd in their respective race and to Sam Dobson and Jakson Egan joining and passing me in the 1.8km swim both boys finishing in under 40 mins. The swell picked up and stingers were plenty but what drove us all was knowing that those undergoing treatment endure far more suffering than what we were being exposed to in that short timeframe. In total we raised $200 great effort! The U14 age group headed off to camp for the weekend of the 30th October. 33 Youngsters in total and 4 parent volunteers joined me. For the adults the challenge was outage on camp and the appearance of a ghostly figure ensured most were tucked up in bed before midnight-bingo! Thank you to the volunteers who assisted and gave their time so willingly to ensure the camp was a success for the kids. No doubt there was Sunday nanna naps all round for Myles,Tony,Kate,Suzy and Julie. coping with sleep deprivation. For the kids it was survival on lollies. It has to be said that the visit from Brett Warner (U10 AGM) on Saturday night was the highlight of the camp. Brett provided a presentation on his career to date and followed up with story time with a Halloween twist- what a hit I can still hear the screaming ringing in my ears! A mysterious power Finally, if you are keen to volunteer please don t be shy me and we can discuss what type of roles around the club interest you. The club belongs to the community and it is important that you as members become involved to ensure the club remains sustainable. Enthusiasm is contagious; start an epidemic See you on the beach! Jackie Eley Arriving at camp we all headed straight for the high ropes that, we soon found out, were off bounds without supervision. We sorted out our dorms and fought over who slept on the top and bottom, even though we all ended up on the floor by Sunday. Glen (the guy that came and did the workshops with us) said some really inspirational things and I could tell straight away that it helped some people. Writing our goals down made us all think about our future and made us all realise it s not that long away and we need to start making decisions. I met some new people who I didn't even know did surf club and made some friends. Halloween was spooky and a few of us got heart attacks Camp Life by Darcey Brookes when Tony and Myles jumped out of the bushes just as Brett was saying how crazy people used to run away and never got found! It was worth it because watching all the boys running for their lives screaming like girls was priceless! Brett showed us heaps of cool war stuff and told us some cool stories. By Sunday we were all super tired and after a few hours of volleyball and a play in the pool we were begging our parents to hurry up so we could sleep. I think there were a few afternoon naps on the way home! It felt great to be yourself and know you weren't going to get judged by anyone. I can t wait for next year s camp! Page 4

6 Lifesaving Tip #3 How to spot a Rip current! When waves break on a beach, they push water towards the shoreline. Once that water reaches the shore, it has to find a way to get back out to sea, and it does this by flowing downwards into deeper channels in the surf zone. Once the water is in these deeper areas, it can flow back out to sea away from the shoreline. These deeper channels are called rip currents. Rip currents are the number 1 hazard on Australian beaches being responsible for at least 21 drownings on average per year, as well as being the cause of many rescues. Rip currents often lead to drowning when swimmers attempt to fight the current trying to swim directly back to the shoreline, become exhausted and begin to panic. Rip currents can also be deadly for non-swimmers as a person standing in waist deep water can be dragged into the deeper waters of the rip current, where they can drown if they are unable to swim and are not wearing or holding a flotation device. How do you spot a rip current? The key signs to look for are: Deeper darker water Fewer breaking waves Sometimes sandy coloured water extending beyond the surf zone Debris or seaweed Sometimes it s easier to look for where the waves are breaking consistently, and then look to each side where they don t break consistently. That s the rip current! Rip Current Survival If you get caught in a rip current, you need to know your options: 1. For assistance, stay calm, float and raise an arm to attract attention. 2. While floating, rip currents may flow in a circular pattern and return you to an adjacent sandbar. 3. You may escape the rip current by swimming parallel to the beach, towards the breaking waves. 4. You should regularly assess your situation. If your response is ineffective, you may need to adopt an alternative such as staying calm, floating and raising an arm to attract attention. Rips are not an undertow. Studies have confirmed that rip currents do not pull people under water causing them to drown. They simply take a person away from the beach, often eventually back into the wave zone. Rip current related drowning deaths are therefore due to variable factors including: 1. Ability to swim, 2. The instinctive nature to attempt to swim directly back into shore against the rip current which leads to fatigue, 3. The panic which results and the impairment of judgment, 4. Not attending a patrolled beach where services are able to assist/rescue. Rip currents can be used wisely depending on your ability in the surf environment Lifesavers and lifeguards use rip currents to get to people in trouble more quickly and surfers often use a rip current to get out through the wave zone. However, in order to do this, it takes years of training and experience and caution must always be taken. Common misconceptions about rip currents Rip currents can be hazardous all the time, not just when there are large surf conditions When waves are larger the speed of the rip current is also higher resulting in increased risk. However, when these conditions exist less people typically enter the water. It s on days when the surf is moderate that more drowning deaths occur as more people go swimming. Calm water is not always safe water Many people end up in a rip current as a result of choosing to swim in an area of calm water on the beach. Unfortunately, where rip currents start on the shore, the water often has a calmer appearance with ripples on the surface indicting a subtle flow of water out to sea. The best area to swim is between the red and yellow flags to ensure you are under supervision of lifeguards. There is no such thing as a rip tide Rip currents are sometimes referred to as rip tides, which is misleading as tides refer to water level changes over a period of 6-12 hours, whereas rip currents are currents moving over a period of seconds, minutes and hours. The best thing you can do is stay out of rip current in the first place! The best ways to do this are: Always swim between the red and yellow flags Learn how to spot rip currents and avoid them Page 6

7 LIFESAVING WA Lifesavers rescue Abalone Fishers PERTHNOW.COM.AU Did you read the article in Perth Now? Our very own Mark Anderson and Laurie demamiel teamed up in the IRB as rescuers for the first abalone day. According to PerthNow, at Ocean Reef beach in Iluka, beach goers alerted rescuers (Mark & Laurie) to a fisherman who was found struggling in the surf. The Abalone season runs on the first Sunday of each month from November - March from 7.00am am. Mullaloo SLSC covers an extensive area beyond normal patrol areas and more volunteers are urgently required. More volunteers are also needed for the IRB Roster for regular patrols/water safety. So for all those recently qualified crew and drivers, get in the action and put your name on the roster.
