Voice of the Seahorse Carlton Park SLSC PO Box 44 Dodges Ferry President s Word by Craig Mackinnon December 4th 2017 Bendigo Bank Surf Festival The Carlton Park Surf Festival, proudly sponsored by the Bendigo Bank Sorell Branch, was held on Saturday 25th November in warm but stormy conditions. The event is now a permanent fixture on the surf sports calendar and has fast become a major financial event for the club. Nearly 500 people competed in ocean swims, beach fun runs, board, ski, surf boats and SUP races. Although the weather may have kept some away, many members of the community joined club members in the festive fun August throughout 2017 the day and stayed on to enjoy some food and tunes from the talented local food vendors and musicians. We would like to thank the following sponsors for their support of the Surf Festival: Bendigo Bank (Naming rights sponsor), 7HOFM, Healthy Horizons, YMCA Aquatic, DC Watercraft, Dolphin, Strapmark, Rogerson & Birch Surveyors, Trophy Cabinet, Jay Sails, Naish Australia. A huge thank you to the numerous club volunteers that make this event such a successful day too many to individually name. Patrol Season and Nippers Starts Last weekend, the so called start to summer, was also the start of the patrol season. Our members braved strong winds, heavy rain and cold temperatures to don their patrol uniforms and provide this valued service to the community. Saturday was also the first day of 'at the beach' training for our juniors with the club also holding a 'come and try' it day to attract new members and families. Despite the weather, the day was a success with approximately 80 kids joining in the activities and many trying them for the first time. Coming soon Some exciting news coming shortly with a couple of new club sponsors joining the CPSLSC family. The clubs website is also currently being rebuilt and will be officially launched later this month. More to come. See you on the beach, Craig Mackinnon Carlton Park SLSC President
Nipper News It has been an outstanding start to the season for our Nippers. Erin Findlay and Maya Stubbs have been selected as our Junior Club Captains for the Season. Thanks to Casey Jones, Teresa Spinks and Lia Visentin for conducting the interviews. Maya will go on to represent our club as Junior Lifesaver of the Year at the State Titles in March. Both girls will be fantastic leaders for our club. Casey, Erin, Maya and Lia after the interviews. Future Leaders Camp The Future Leaders camp during November was once again a great success and enabled our older nippers to bond and start the season on a positive note. Thanks to all involved in the running of the camp and overnight supervision of the nippers. The following are camp reports from some of our junior leaders. On the 18th and 19th of November Carlton Park had its Junior SLSC Camp at the Blue Lagoon camp site and it was amazing. Christine, Nathan, Laura, Antony, Leah and other committee members volunteered their time to make it as enjoyable for us as possible and they definitely achieved that. I loved being able to make new friendships and build stronger bonds with people and I think everyone cooperated well and all had a team spirit. We had so many opportunities to try new things like rock climbing, archery and best of all crate climbing. But we also had so many opportunities to show off hidden talents like speed eating a bowl of frozen peas and doing perfect push ups, which I now know is not my cup of tea! The weather couldn t have been better and I loved late afternoon swimming at the beach. I m just so thankful for everyone who made it so enjoyable and memorable because it was my last camp and I m going to miss having such a great time. By Erin Finlay It was amazing fun to see all the familiar faces that I haven t seen in ages and new people I got to know better. The two days consisted of fun activities, good training and most importantly great food, well except for the frozen peas. The trainings were very fun but a struggle for me because it s the first year on a Malibu and it is probably three times bigger than me! The new Blue Lagoon facilities are amazing with an awesome rock climbing wall as well as an indoor basketball court and best of all the crate climbing. It was a big challenge and an awesome experience getting up to thirteen crates, I was pooping my pants while I was up there! It was a great camp and I have to thank all the volunteers that took up their time on the weekend because I doubt they would really like to spend their weekend with a group of year olds. Also, a big thank you to the Blue Lagoon staff that spent time with us and patiently taught us some new skills. By Maya Stubbs The Future Leaders camp was an amazing experience. I got to see new people and what different skills they have. I also got to see what skills I had that I didn't know about, like eating a bowl of peas as fast as I could. But that wasn't pleasant. We also got to try and use our water safety skills to help someone who was scared on the shore. I think the Future Leaders camp is more than what some people think. Some people just think that Carlton win competitions, but we are much more; we are a social fun club for instance we probably didn't got to bed till midnight. I don t think there is anything to improve on for next year s camp, it was perfect. The conditions were amazing, the swell was up and that s all us surfers need. Thank you for an amazing experience. By Archie Peart 2
Nipper Open Day Given the inclement weather and challenging surf, it was great to see so many current and new juniors on the beach last Saturday. The first junior carnival for the season is at Kingston Beach this Saturday. Please ensure you have notified the Junior Management Team if planning to compete. Carnival fees are $11 per child and must be paid to the club account prior to the event. Details on how to pay are attached to this newsletter. Surf Sports Carlton Park Surf Festival The annual Carlton Park Surf Festival gave many of our senior members their first opportunity to put their many hours of pre-season training to the test. A highlight of the day was the first ocean swim of the season the YMCA Clear Water Classic. Max Giuliani was the standout Carlton Park performer finishing fifth in the Open 900m event in a time of 9 mins 53 sec. This was an outstanding effort considering Max is an under 15 competitor swimming in an open age race. Carlton Park s Tyler Raspin won the Novice 500m swim in a time of 6 mins 53 secs. The Strapmark Youth Board Challenge was also a major fitness test as competitors raced in three heats over a tough 800m course. Carlton Park s Ned Lennox and Lucy Eade performed well in all three races and are currently leading the board series with one round to go at Clifton Beach this weekend. Surf Boats The first round of the Navy Surf Boat series was also held at the Surf Festival. Carlton s female crew dominated racing winning all three heats. Our Male A Boat featuring a new line-up this year raced finished second to Penguin. Nat Griggs and James Margetts have lured Hayden Early out of retirement and recruited powerhouse Josh Smith, so with some training this crew could be a major force in boat rowing this year. The Carlton Under 19 male crew also competed well and is looking to improve in their second season together. Clifton Beach Senior Carnival Sunday 10th December The first statewide senior carnival is this Sunday at Clifton. The Carlton Park team briefing will be held at 8.30am, and events commence at 9.00am. Please note that some senior beach events will be run from 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon 9th December at Kingston Beach. The final round of the Strapmark Youth Board Challenge at is also at Kingston on Saturday at 3pm. 2km nipper board race and 4km U15 and U17 race. If you are competing please notify Grant Raspin Facebook grantraspin@gmail.com Mb: The Clifton Carnival Program is attached to this newsletter. 3

Practical/Face-to-face: Club sessions will cover updates for this season, run-swim-runs, rescues, signals, radios, CPR. Please bring Hi-Vis Pink Singlets for water components. Online theory: Multiple choice theory tests for each award you hold must also be completed online via LSV Member Training from Anywhere before December 31st. If you do not complete online theory your award will not be processed. If you cannot attend this session you will need to complete your assessment at Clifton Beach or Kingston Beach on one of their dates: Wednesday 13 th 5:30pm Kingston Beach Thursday 14 th 5:30pm Clifton Beach Sunday 17 th 9am Clifton Beach Wednesday 20 th 5:30pm Kingston Beach IRB DRIVERS & CREW Water Safety Required: 9 th December 2017: Kingston Beach Carnival 16 th December 2017: Seven Mile Beach Swim 31 st December 2017: Taste of Tasmania Swim Christmas Day Patrol Each year the club provides a Christmas Day patrol as part of our committed service to our community. This is a fun patrol with family and friends so if you are available to pop on your patrol gear ( and maybe a Santa Hat) and join us on the beach for a few hours then please contact our Patrol Officer Rose Hurle rosiebud26@hotmail.com 2017/18 Patrols The patrolling season kicked off on Saturday 2 nd December and will run through to Monday 2 nd April (Easter Monday) including all public holidays. This season SLSA have launched PAPERLESS PATROLS via a Patrol Ops App which means we will be recording patrol logbooks electronically via the clubs ipad. Your patrol captain will be in charge of signing members on and off online. Please let your patrol captain know when you arrive and when you are leaving patrol otherwise your hours may not be recorded. A friendly reminder that all patrolling members must have paid their memberships prior to patrolling this is an insurance requirement and you cannot patrol unless you are a financial member of the club. If you are not a financial member, your patrol captain will be unable to sign you on to the patrol using this season s online patrol app. Substitutes if you cannot make your rostered patrol you must find a substitute to replace you that holds the same awards (ie if you are an IRB driver and need a substitute, you must be replaced by another IRB Driver so that all awards are covered). Please let your patrol captain know if you are away and who your substitute will be at least 48 hours before your patrol. Please refer to the attached Patrol Operations Manual for more information on patrolling requirements and etiquette (a copy is also in the patrol room).
Side-by-side (Can-Am) Induction All members wishing to be listed as a driver for the side-by-side this season will need to complete an induction. Please contact Toby Whitton and Rachel Englund for induction information. COURSES: Thinking of upskilling or gaining a new award? We are looking at running a few more courses this season and would love to hear from you if there is a course you d like to do. Courses will be run in the new year if there is enough interest from members. -ARTC (Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate) -BRONZE Medallion -SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate) If you are interested in gaining one of the following awards this season please contact our Training Officer Toby Whitton toby.whitton@hotmail.com Memberships Please keep the membership renewals and payments coming in. You must be a financial member before competing or patrolling. Details on how to renew or become a member are attached to this newsletter. 5
Member Spotlight: Rachel Englund What is your role at Carlton Park? This season I have taken on the role of Lifesaving Manager. I am also a Trainer, Assessor, and a Vice Patrol Captain. How long have you been involved with the club? I have only been a member at Carlton Park for three years - I joined at the end of the 2014/15 season after moving to Hobart (after completing my Masters of Architecture at UTAS in Launceston). Prior to joining Carlton, I was a member at Ulverstone SLSC I joined there in 2011 when I completed my Bronze Medallion. What do you enjoy most about our club? Carlton Park has a very welcoming, friendly atmosphere as a relatively new member I have always felt like I was welcomed into the family. I enjoy heading down to the club to spend time on the beach with good company. In my eyes, Carlton Park s focus on enjoyment and encouragement for all members is what brings me back each season everyone is valued and supported. Describe your most memorable surf club moment? I have a number of memorable surf club moments, each memorable for a different reason. Recently I was awarded SLST Trainer of the Year for the 2016/17 season this was a huge honour for me as I am a trainer because I love to teach others valuable skills. A very big thankyou to Carlton Park for the nomination! My second most memorable moment would be that I am the only female to gain the Rescue Water Craft Certificate in Tasmania. I completed my Rescue Water Craft Certificate (Jetski) in April 2016 and joined the SLST Emergency Response Team. This is memorable for me as it was a personal achievement to do something that pushed me outside my comfort zone. I m really proud and hope that I can encourage others to challenge themselves. Share something that not many people would know about you? Earlier this year I travelled to Samoa to represent Surf Life Saving Tasmania as a trainer and to oversee the local lifeguards during the filming of Australian Survivor. In this role I had to do risk assessments for each water challenge, provide weather data for the production crews and manage the local lifeguards (including rostering). It was the most challenging but rewarding experience! Who do you admire and why? There are too many individuals that I admire, so instead I will describe the qualities that I admire in these people. I admire those who are encouraging, optimistic and willing to lend a hand (or an ear to listen) to help others. I believe it s important to surround yourself with positive people negativity only gets you down! Name three people, living or dead, who you d invite to a dinner party? The dinner party would be held in a mid-century architecturally designed home where Tim Rosso Ross would be in his element chatting about design, how we live and he d probably throw in a bit of comedy or play a tune on his guitar. Ellen Degeneres would be joining us also it wouldn t be a party without her sense of humour, energy and dance moves! Food genius Heston Blumenthal would be in charge of whipping up the wonderfully wild and magical meals for us to be blown away by I m secretly hoping for edible cutlery too. 6
