2 OMFC Fliteline 2 Minutes of October Meeting The October 2013 meeting was brought to order by President Terry Sears at 7:30 PM on October 4th. There were about 30 members present for the first meeting of the Fall session. Terry welcomed everyone back and gave us a brief report on the South Field Fun Fly held the previous Saturday. Quick summary it was cold, windy and miserable. A few people flew, but not often and not for long. Everyone else watched; some of us were crazy enough to take pictures... Also a big thanks to Keith Houston, who made a large donation to fund the field rolling this year, and to Percy Ford-Smith, who arranged for use of the roller. Rasheed Juman was thanked for his efforts to promote the club at the Hamilton Air Show, and Andy Sulkowski and Mansoor Khan for contributing to the Air Show article and photos that appeared in the August edition of the Model Airplane News magazine. Colin and Ethan Chariandy recently held a very productive Pattern workshop. The success of the format means there will more than likely be a similar endeavor next season. Last but not least, Terry thanked our field managers, Ron Barr and Bill Funnell. Bill especially regards the North Field as his garden - the manicured field often resembles a putting green! Thanks Bill! It was much too cold and windy to have a BBQ, so everyone went home for lunch. There s Dave wishing he had already left for Florida: Back to the meeting. Terry gave a big Thank You! to Guch, who not only supplied the club with a second BBQ, but did the cooking for all the Club events this summer! We then had very brief summaries from the C.D. s of the various summer events. Check the next page for links to the Fliteline Archives where you can find the original article/report. There was discussion regarding the coming loss of our South Field, and the direction that the club may take regarding a new field. Terry stated that we are not actively looking at the moment, and unless we perceive a need we won t be in the near term. The current lease on the North Field has three more years to run, and does not look to be in jeopardy when that time is up. That is not to say that members shouldn t keep their eyes open for possible sites to further assess. Anyone who knows of a potential site should let the executive know. Roger Young, a former club President, stated that he feels that with all members flying at one field next year, the club will become more cohesive and there will be a greater sense of everyone belonging to one club.

Bob Zacharczuk had brought a box of plans from the 80s and 90s, those of us who still build had fun looking through them (and best of all, they were free for the taking!) Thanks Bob! A couple of members had brought planes to show. Below is Jim Daly with his Hanger 9 / Carden Extra 300. The plane is an ARF that utilizes balsa-sheeted, foam-core wings, stab and fin. The fuse is standard wood construction with a foam turtle deck. At 89 span, the plane weighs 20 lb and is powered by a 3W 55cc gas engine swinging a 24-8 prop. Bob states that with the large canister muffler on the 3W, the machine is very quiet (about 89 db at 3m), and sounds like an electric at times!! Also on display was Jack Linghorne s electrified Bird of Time glider. Jack gave us a short talk on SOGGI (South Ontario Glider Group) and the appeal of flying gliders, especially in competitions. The advent of height regulated motor cut-offs has made it possible for everyone to compete on a more level playing field, so to speak. Jack invited everyone to try their hand at gliding. The meeting was adjourned at 9 pm.

4 OMFC Fliteline 4 Cat s Cradle Well, another October, another end of the flying season. This one a bit different from others in a long time, as we will no longer have the South Field after mid-november. That will obviously bring changes in the way we do things next season, but it shouldn t be looked at as the end of the world. Sure, some of us will miss the quiet and seclusion we ve been used to, but our remaining field is certainly a first-class facility (thanks to Bill), and we ll quickly get used to it and its advantages. As Roger said at our last meeting, it will be an opportunity to bring cohesion to the two groups of flyers that form our club. I actually got back to flying for the first time in about two years. The photography has gone well got a DSLR last year and now I m pretty comfortable with my camera again. I tried to get photos of as many members planes as I could, as well as coverage of all the events I could attend. Some of the individual plane photos will get published in the Fliteline, but there s really not enough space to do them justice. Later in the year, when everyone who hasn t escaped to Florida is up to their waists in slush, I ll post all the remaining photos online (on Flickr), just as a reminder of what summer was like. On the flying front, I got back in the air again at the end of September. As proof, here s a shot of my trusty old Great Planes Super Sportster. Since it s the end of the season for many of us, don t forget about winterizing your equipment. There were a couple of articles in last October s Fliteline dealing with that issue here s the link: Fliteline_October_2012.pdf Also, next meeting (November 4 th ) is the Club s Annual General Meeting. Wings are awarded to our successful Flight School graduates, and the yearly Executive elections are held. Personally, it s been quite an eventful summer! Due to some ticker issues, my time was initially spent sharpening up my photography skills, and after the health issues were more-or-less resolved, The photo is courtesy of Gerard Baron (Thanks, Gerard!), who caught the whole flight, including the quadruple-bounce landing (pictures of which I m not releasing to the public, ever ) This plane is powered by a Saito 82, and was originally built in 1998(!!). It s now on its second re-incarnation, including some design changes. At the moment I m about a 1D flyer, but we re working on it!! Looking forward to next Spring already!

6 OMFC Fliteline 6 South Field Move October 21, 2013 Our lease gives us access to the South Field until November 16th. However, it was felt that the Dundas Street road widening construction could present access problems if there was any excavation in front of, or even close to, the laneway entrance. Even at the beginning of October, the laneway entrance had become very muddy, and any heavy equipment in the area would only make matters worse. The decision was made to get the South Field equipment out of there and take it to the North Field as soon as the weather permitted. Monday, October 21st wasn t great, but at least it was not frigid and/or pouring rain. It took three trips, using both the mower trailer and Keith s large pickup, to get the shelter, three picnic tables, four starting tables, umpteen patio stones, a BBQ and assorted signs & paraphernalia up the road to the North Field. All done in a good morning s effort by ten volunteers (nine workers and one scribe )!! A great job well done, gentlemen!
