2 OMFC Fliteline 2 Cat s Cradle In early May, Aldo resigned as President of the Club and Event Sponsor of the Annual Air Show. The officers of the Club subsequently appointed Terry Sears to the President s position. In accordance with the Club Constitution, he will hold the position on an interim basis until the next regularly scheduled Club meeting in October. At that time there will be an election to find a permanent replacement. Terry has also volunteered to take over the task of Air Show Event Sponsor, and will be responsible for its organization. Electric Fun Fly June 3rd June 3 rd saw our club hold its highly successful annual Electric Fun Fly. This year we had twenty-eight entrants from eight different area clubs, ranging from Stoney Creek/Niagara in the west to Seaton Valley in the east and many between the two. The entrants brought several dozen planes and helicopters, all electric powered save one (we ll get to that one a bit later). All types of planes were represented, from powered gliders to a wide variety of scale and sport fixed wing models. They ranged from tiny hand launched planes to huge 3D and pattern models as well EDF jets and helicopters. With the exception of one tiny specimen, the only things missing were multi-rotor machines. The entrants enjoyed an almost perfect flying day - sunny and warm, not too hot and a very light wind. A BBQ lunch was provided for all fliers, done up by Denis Loo and Dave Slote, but there was never a lull in the flying; were planes in the air even during lunch time. A highlight of the afternoon was a flight by Sandro Novelli (from the Bramalea club) of his Avanti turbine jet. Not electric to be sure, but a hit nonetheless. Sandro is planning to fly at our upcoming Air Show, and he needed to test the jet to see whether it could take off and land safely at our field, as well as staying within our flying boundaries during turns. Sandro had no problems we look forward to seeing him at the airshow! Our event was sponsored by the three local hobby shops, Skycraft in Burlington, Great Planes in Mississauga and Hobby Hobby in Streetsville. Thanks to them we had some fantastic prizes and a draw where everyone came away with something. 4 OMFC Fliteline 4 Annual Air Show June 18th Mike McDermott Well, folks we did miss all the rain but it was a very hot sunny and VERY WINDY day. We had 50 km gusts and sustained high winds at 90 degrees across the runway. It was so bad that initially no fixed wing pilots were prepared to fly. Several pilots arrived at the field walked around and said no thanks and left. Then to our complete amazement it looked like 300 plus people had shown up to watch the show. With no schedule, and no willing to fly fixed wing pilots we went in to panic mode...how can we have a show, what can we do to keep the crowd entertained for at least a little while?? We were supposed to start the show with a candy drop for the kids but Jim Eichenberg wisely decided to do a fast circular taxi with a bag of goodies strapped underneath his plane where he released the candies as he went by. The kids did not mind at all and rushed onto the field to snap up the goodies. Luckily, we had 2 helicopter pilots show up. Don Irvine, who is a member of the Electric Model Flyers of Southern Ontario showed up with three mainly scale flying helicopters and Matt Orgera, son of Dennis Orgera, an OMFC member, had two wild Goblin 3D type helicopters, one nitro and one electric. Both pilots flew at least three times each, possibly more with their machines. I was wondering if the crowd was getting bored but they seemed enthralled with the skills of both pilots alternating between scale flying and wild 3D flying. There was lots of clapping and cheering after every flight! We managed to create some dialogue in between the flying by talking about the various aircraft that were in a line up across the top of the field [Thanks to all those who brought out their aircraft for at least a static display]. Mayor Krantz of Milton showed up and made a very nice speech, largely complimenting the club and it s long association with Milton. Just as we thought we would have to bring the show the show to a close after just an hour or so, Adam Foreman decided he would risk his Corsair. We all thought he was out of his mind but both we and the crowd seemed very appreciative. Adam took off virtually across the runway and we were hoping the CFI Brian was not watching. I say took off but it was a virtual lift off. Adam stayed up for over six minutes and was blown all over the sky. The landing was something else to watch. The crowd and all us OMFC guys gave a huge cheer...half of it from relief! Well, we then had another heli flight from Don Irvine and out of the blue Terry Sears stood up and said he wanted to try it. Again, we all thought he was nuts but the crowd was pleased. Terry flew, I use that term loosely, meaning no disrespect. Terry was flying a pattern model and doing some pattern maneuvers, very impressive viewing the conditions. On landing he said he was almost at full throttle during a cross field landing. Well, one last heli flight Matt went up again flying like a banshee and really impressing the crowd. Ok, so now the show must be brought to end...no, wait...is that Adam Foreman thinking of taking up his amazing Stearman??? Thinking about it he says... I need 5 minutes. After a couple of minutes we asked the crowd to give Adam a big hand and they did. Adam was in. I was prepared to have him certified but the show must go on. Again another cross runway takeoff, liftoff, whatever - but it went up! Adam flew around for 6 plus minutes and was flying sideways lots of the time and close to the flight line to give the audience a real feel of the aircraft and the sound of the wonderful 5 cylinder radial. Adam needed two tries to get her down, aiming at the fence and turning away at the last minute as the Stearman landed. Amazing stuff! The crowd was very appreciative.

5 OMFC Fliteline 5 Well, we managed to stretch the program to two hours. The audience was happy and they approached many OMFC guys to tell them they had enjoyed the show. We thought we had a disaster on our hands but it turned out great with the help of basically just four guys. Can you imagine; just four guys. OMFC thanks you for saving the show from disaster. Don Irvine and Matt Orgera made it all look easy and loads of fun and carried the show. Adam Foreman and Terry Sears were the icing on the cake. Thank you all!! Photos of the event can be found on our Flickr pages: Harvey Slaght: Andy Sulkowski: My family came to the air show this year (mainly to make sure that I used my suntan lotion, I m suspect), and they thoroughly enjoyed the day. My wife also told me after the event that the people around her, mostly young families, really seemed to be having fun, and everyone considered the day a very enjoyable outing, despite the flying issues with the weather. One little guy came up to me, as I was putting my planes away, with a handful of Toonies as their family s admission, since they missed giving it on the way in! There was a really good atmosphere in the crowd. With the much larger population base in Milton these days (and it will only get bigger), having our show become known as a pleasant way to spend Father s Day afternoon will ensure we have substantial crowds in the years to come. a.s.

7 OMFC Fliteline 7 Field Work Every year when we go out to fly we take for granted that the field will be well-groomed and properly cut and trimmed when we get there. If it isn t we probably complain a lot. But that grooming and cutting doesn t happen by itself, it takes a lot of effort by a small number of dedicated individuals. Pictured here are only a few of the many volunteers that come to help our Field Manager, Bill Funnell, with the necessary field maintenance duties setting up in the Spring, keeping up on a weekly basis, and then taking down in the fall. Our hats off to the field maintenance volunteers!!
