C1 Call Descriptions Top >>> In this chapter the intention is to describe the C1 calls in a concise and consistent way and to make the calls easy to understand with many figures. For exact definitions, see Callerlab Basic Challenge Program. The facts are based on lots of dancing to good teachers and callers, such as Leif Håkansson, Karin Amcoff, Robert Milestad, Leif Carlsson, Tommy Dahl, Jack Borgström, Lars Asplund, Anders Blom, Dave Wilson Robert Björk, Kenny Reese, Jerry Jestin and Ron Libby. I have also been studying books, papers and web publications by Lars-Erik Morell, Holger Kraft and Vic Ceder (see and CALLERLAB 2006 ( Dusan Valas has contributed with comments and ideas. If you find any faults or if you have other comments, please let me know ( mona.t@telia.com, home page Galaxy concept (1) From a Galaxy formation > 1: follow the circulation path performing <anything> to a Galaxy == to a Galaxy formation. Galaxy Circulate from Galaxy formation >follow the path and Circulate. Square the Bases (2) From Facing Lines > 2: Centers Square Thru 3 as Ends Pass Thru and Bend; next Ends start a Split Square Thru 2; next all Trade By == to an Eight Chain Thru. {3} Ramble Scoot & (3) From a ¾ Tag > 3: Centers Single Wheel as Outsides Cast Back; next all Slide Thru == to a Completed Double Pass Thru. {2} Scoot & Ramble from ¼ Tag >Scoot Back >Ramble. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Tag Back (to a Wave) (4) From a Wave Line > 4: ½ Tag; next Scoot Back == to a Wave. {2} Blocks concept (5) From Blocks formation > 5: in each Block perform <anything> independently == to new Blocks formation. Blocks diagonal rule Blocks Walk & Dodge the diagonal line of four dancers. After the call the orientation of the Blocks diagonal in the room must remain. from Blocks formation >each Block Walk & Dodge==to new Blocks. Blocks Vertical Tag ½ from Blocks formation >each Couple Single Wheel, prepare for Right Shoulder Tag >each Block ½ Tag==to new Blocks. Blocks Square Chain Thru from Blocks formation >each Block Right Pull By and ¼ In=>Step to L-H Waves and separate the Blocks >Left Swing Thru >all Left Turn Thru and adjust to Blocks. Blocks Square Chain the Top To perform a complicated call it is necessary to separate the Blocks, perform the call and adjust to Blocks that have the same Blocks diagonal orientation. The bold dancers at each end of the diagonal own the corners. from Blocks formation >each Block Right Pull By and ¼ In=>Step to L-H Waves and separate the Blocks >Swing >Centers Cast Off ¾ as Ends Move Up >all Left Turn Thru=>adjust to Blocks. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Interlocked Diamonds concept (6) Interlocked Diamond Circulate From Interlocked Diamonds formation > 6: in each Interlocked Diamond perform <anything> independently == to Interlocked Diamonds. from Interlocked Diamonds formation >follow the circulation path Circulate 1==to new Interlocked Diamonds. Interlocked Diamond Chain Thru from Interlocked Diamonds formation >all Interlocked Diamond Circulate >Very Centers Trade >Centers Push Cast Off ¾==to 1+3 Lines. Ah So (7) From a Wave > 7: Ends Cross Fold as Centers follow still holding hands == to a Mini-Wave Box. Alternative: As Couples Mini-Waves Wheel & Deal. Pass the Axle (8) From an Eight Chain Thru > 8: all Pass Thru; next Centers Pass Thru as Ends Cross Cast Back; next all Trade; next Centers Trade == to In-Facing Lines. {4} Pass the Axle but instead of all Trade, all Cast Off ¾ Belles pass in front of Beaus when executing Cross Cast Back from Eight Chain Thru formation >all Pass Thru >Centers Pass Thru as Ends Cross Cast Back > all Cast Off ¾ >Centers Trade==to Out-Facing Lines. Squeeze (9) From two dancers side-by-side, adjacent apart > 9: those who can: Trade and Slide apart Slide together and Trade == to two dancers side-by-side apart adjacent. from adjacent dancers from dancers apart Trade and Slide apart Slide together and Trade Others are inactive. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Galaxy Squeeze from a Galaxy >Very Centers Slide together and Trade as Mini-Waves Trade and Slide apart==to an Hourglass. Butterfly Squeeze from a Butterfly >Centers Trade and Slide apart as Outsides Slide together and Trade==to an O. Press <direction> (10) From applicable formation > 10: <designated> dancers move 1 position to <direction> and forward as others are inactive == to various formations. This call was moved from [C2] to [C1] Press ½ Ahead Do not change your facing direction during this call. From Two-Faced Lines >all move ½ position Ahead==to an offset formation. Press Right From Two-Faced Lines >all move 1 position Ahead and 1 position Right==to Columns. Beaus Press Ahead From Facing Lines >Beaus move 1 position Ahead and Others adjust to make enough space==to Blocks. Shakedown (11) From Couples Back-to-Back > 11: ¼ R and Box Counter Rotate ¼ and Roll == to Facing Couples. {1} old definition Beaus Run and Roll as Belles ¼ Out and Run Phantoms concept (12) From various formations > 12: if needed perform <anything> with imaginary dancers, who are occupying the spots in the square that lacks real dancers == to various formations. Matrix The dancing spots used for different formations can be illustrated by a Matrix. Dancers in two parallel Lines occupy 2x4 spots in an 8-Matrix. When two Lines are occupied by Phantoms 4x4 spots in a 16-Matrix will be used. One spot can be occupied both by a real dancer and a Phantom. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Phantoms Acey Deucey From T-Bone Mini-Waves >each Mini-Wave imagine a Phantom Mini-Wave on the same line=>acey Deucey with these Phantoms==to new Waves on top of each other making right angles==to new real T-Bone Mini-Waves. Swap, Phantoms Walk & Dodge, Phantoms Zing From L-H Waves >Belles (all) Step >imagine Phantoms on the empty spots=>walk & Dodge with these Phantoms >Leaders (the real dancers) ¾ Zoom==to real Columns, the Phantoms are outside the formation and can be ignored. T-Bone Circulate Triple Box Walk & Dodge Before each call the word Phantom must be called otherwise they do not exist and these Phantoms are turned any suitable way. The Phantoms do not depend on the previous call just the empty spots. see T-Bone concept (33) p13>>. see Triple Box concept (71) p29>>. Step & Fold (13) From a Wave Inverted Line > 13: Centers Step ½ as Ends Fold == adjust to a Box. Counter Rotate <fraction> (21) From various formations > 21: each dancer moves independently <fraction> forwards along a circular path around the center of the square == to various formations. rule Forwards along a circular path means to move around the center of the square as close as possible to the way you are facing. But when moving on a circular path the face direction continuously changes. After Counter Rotate ¼ you will be facing the next wall. Mona Törnqvist (38)

general rule If two dancers stop on the same spot they make a R-H Mini-Wave on that spot. from a Tidal Wave Counter From a Tidal Wave >each dancer moves independently forwards on one of the four Rotate ½ circular paths ¼ >½==to a Tidal Wave. from Waves Counter Rotate ¾ From Parallel Waves >Centers move forwards on the inner circular path ¾, in this case clockwise, still holding hands=>ends move forwards on the outer circular path ¾, in this case anti-clockwise==to Waves. from Facing Lines Counter Rotate ¼ From Facing Lines >each dancer move independently forwards on the inner or outer circular path ¼=>Left Couples move in this case clockwise on the inner and outer paths=>right Couples move anti-clockwise on the inner and outer paths==to Waves. For Facing Lines Counter Rotate ¼ is the same as Concentric Pass Thru and ¼ In. Centers cannot hold hands. Step & Flip (22) From a Wave Line > 22: Centers Step as Ends Flip == to a Box or Z formation. from Out-Facing Lines A Wave and a Two-Faced Lines ends in a Z formation, compare Step & Fold (13) p6>>. >Centers Step as Ends Flip==to Columns. from Two-Faced Lines (left figure) >Centers Step as Ends Flip==to a Z formation. from Waves (right figure) Flip the Line <fraction> (23) From a Wave Line > 23: Centers Run; next any-shoulder Tag the Line <fraction> == to any Tag. {2} Any-shoulder means that after Centers Run the Very Centers hand-hold determines which shoulders should pass. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Flip the Line From R-H Waves >Centers Run >R-shoulder Tag the Line ¼ >½ >¾ >full. Flip the Line ½ From L-H Waves >Centers Run >L-shoulder Tag the Line ¼ >½. Flip the Line ½ From L-H Two-Faced Lines >Centers Run >L-shoulder Tag the Line ¼ >½. Concentric Flip the Line see Concentric concept (61) p24>>. Cross Roll to a Line Wave (24) From a Wave Line > 24: Centers Cross Run as Ends Run == to a Line Wave. From Two-Faced Lines >half way=>centers Cross Run as Ends Run==to Waves. From Out-Facing Lines >half way meet Right-Shoulders=>Centers Cross Run as Ends Run==to In-Facing Lines. From Waves >half way=>centers Cross Run as Ends Run==to Two-Faced Lines. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Little Scoot & (25) From a ¾ Tag > 25: Centers Step and Fold as Outsides Turn Right ¼ and Counter Rotate ¼ == to Parallel Waves. Scoot & Little from L-H Wave From ¼ Tag >Left Scoot Back >Centers Step and Fold as Outsides Turn Left ¼ and Counter Rotate ¼. Outsides turn as the direction of Scoot. Dixie Diamond (26) From Facing Couples Tandems > 26: Dixie Style to an Ocean Wave; next Centers Hinge as Ends U-Turn Back == to a Diamond. {2} from Facing Tandems >Right Pull By >Left Touch ¼ >Centers Hinge as Ends U-Turn Back==to Parallel Diamonds. from Facing Couples >½ Half Sashay to Facing Tandems >Right Pull By >Left Touch ¼ >Centers Hinge as Ends U-Turn Back==to Parallel Diamonds. Chase Your Neighbor (27) From Out-Facing Couples > 27: Belles Chase Right and Roll as Beaus Box Circulate 1½ and Cast Off ¾ == to Parallel Waves. from Out-Facing Couples >Belles Chase Right as Beaus Box Circulate 1½ >Belles Roll as Beaus Cast Off ¾==to Parallel Waves. Square Chain the Top (28) From Facing Couples > 28: all Right Pull By and ¼ In; next Step to a L-H Wave and Left Spin the Top; next Left Turn Thru == to Couples Back-to-Back. {3} from Facing Couples >all Right Pull By and ¼ In >Step to a L-H Wave=>all Left Trade >Ends Move Up as Centers Right Cast Off ¾ >Left Turn Thru==to Couples Back-to-Back. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Left Square Chain the Top from Facing Couples >all Left Pull By and ¼ In >Step to a R-H Wave=>all Right Trade >Ends Move Up as Centers Left Cast Off ¾ >Right Turn Thru==to Couples Back-to-Back. Butterfly concept (29) From a Butterfly formation > 29: follow the circulation path performing <anything> == to a Butterfly formation. Butterfly Circulate A Butterfly is a distorted Column. The Butterfly Ends are the Column Ends, to be remembered when adjusting. From a Butterfly formation > follow the path and Circulate == to a new Butterfly. Butterfly Walk & Dodge From a Butterfly formation > in each Split Butterfly, Walk & Dodge along the path == to a new Butterfly. Butterfly Transfer the Column From a Butterfly formation => adjust to normal Columns > Transfer the Column => Wave Ends move out to as Butterfly Ends == to a new Butterfly. To perform a complicated call it is necessary to work from normal Columns, perform the call and adjust to a Butterfly. O concept (30) From an O formation > 30: follow the circulation path performing <anything> == to an O formation. An O is a distorted Column. The dancers with the hand-hold are the O Ends, since they are the Column Ends, to be remembered when adjusting. O Circulate From an O formation >follow the path and Circulate == to a new O. Mona Törnqvist (38)

O Walk & Dodge From an O formation > in each Split O, Walk & Dodge along the path == to a new O. O Transfer the Column From an O formation => adjust to normal Columns > Transfer the Column => Wave Centers move out as O Ends == to a new O. To perform a complicated call it is necessary to work from normal Columns, perform the call and adjust to an O. Cross Extend (31) From a Box or a Single ¼ Tag > 31: Extend to opposite hand-hold == to next Tag with opposite hand-hold. rules Cross Extend Cross Extend from a R-H Box results in a L-H Single ¾ Tag and vice versa. Cross Extend from a R-H Single ¼ Tag results in a L-H Mini-Wave Box and vice versa. From a R-H Single ¼ Tag > Extend to opposite hand-holds == to a L-H Mini-Wave Box. Cross Extend From a L-H Box > Extend to opposite hand-holds == to a R- H Single ¾ Tag. Cross Extend From a R-H ¼ Tag > all Extend to opposite hand-holds == to Parallel L-H Waves. The Center Wave being R handed determines that the resulting Tag will be L handed. Rotary Spin (32) From an Eight Chain Thru > 32: all Right Pull By and Centers Step to a L-H Wave; next Centers Cast L Off ¾ as Outsides Courtesy Turn and Roll == to Parallel Waves. T-Bone concept (33) From two dancers, of whom the shoulder of one dancer points at the face or the back of other dancer, in any formation > 33: perform your part of <anything> independently of the T-boned dancers == to various formations. rule Before moving, determine in what kind of formation you are participating: a Wave Line Diamond. The T-boned dancers are regarded as Phantoms, see Phantoms concept (12) p5>>. Mona Törnqvist (38)

T-Bone Circulate From a T-Bone formation where Boys stand in Lines and Girls in Columns >Boys Circulate on Lines circulation paths=>girls circulate on Columns circulation path=>to another T-Bone formation. Linear Action (34) From a Mini-Wave ¼ Tag > 34: all Hinge; next Centers Box Circulate 1½ as Ends Trade; next those who meet Cast Off ¾ as others move up == to Parallel Waves. {3} The call ends as Chain Reaction, others Hourglass Circulate. Split Box Recycle (35) From a Box > 35: Trailers Beaus Extend and U-Turn Back as the Partner performs a Cross Fold if Leader Facing Recycle if Trailer == to a Wave. Split Recycle Box Recycle Recycle Facing Recycle from Facing Couples The call is performed by all dancers in Split Boxes and results in Waves. The call is performed by dancers in designated Box or dancers in the Center Box and results in a Wave. This call [M] is defined for a Wave where each single Mini-Wave becomes a Couple in a Box. The definition is changed for [C1] as follows: Centers Fold & all adjust to a Box; next the Box rotates clockwise ¼; next Roll == to Facing Couples. {3}. This call [A2] is defined for Facing Couples in a Box, where Beaus becomes Centers and Belles Ends in a Wave. If it is clear that the call must be performed from a Box, only Recycle may be called instead of Split Recycle or Box Recycle. >Beau & Belle performs Facing Recycle. from R-H Mini-Waves from L-H Mini-Waves from R-H Mini-Wave and Couple from L-H Mini-Wave and Couple Recycle [M redefined in C1] >Trailer Extend and U-Turns Back as the Partner Cross Folds. >Trailer Extend and U-Turns Back as the Partner Cross Folds. >in the Mini-Wave Trailer Extends and U-Turns Back as the Partner Cross Folds; in the Couple Beau & Belle performs Facing Recycle. Not allowed! From Waves >Centers Fold and adjust to a Box >Box Counter Rotate >¼ In >to an Eight Chain Thru formation. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Split Recycle From Waves >in each Box Trailers Extend and U-Turn Back as the Partners Cross Fold >to a Tidal Wave. Box Recycle From Waves > >in Center Box Trailer Extends and U-Turns Back as the Partner Cross Folds >to an I formation. Scatter Scoot (36) From Parallel Waves > 36: Leaders Circulate as Trailers Scoot Back independently == to Parallel Waves. From Parallel Waves >Leaders Circulate=>Trailers Scoot Back==to Parallel Waves. Tandem concept (37) From two dancers in Tandem in any formation > 37: Leaders and Trailers work together performing a single dancer s part of <anything> == to various formations with two dancers still in Tandem. Tandem is only valid for one call at a time, that is the word Tandem must precede every call in a sequence otherwise the dancers act as single dancers. Dancers in Tandem are always facing the same direction. Tandem Swing, Tandem Step & Fold From Parallel Waves >Leaders and a Trailers work together as Tandems and Swing >Center Tandems Step as End Tandems Fold. Tandem Swing, Step & Fold From Parallel Waves >Leaders and a Trailers work together as Tandems and Swing with the other Tandems >(no Tandem is called) Centers Step as Ends Fold. Triangle concept (38) From a Triangle formation > 38: follow the circulation path performing <anything> == to a Triangle formation. Inpoint Triangle Circulate From Diamonds >Inpoints and Diamond Centers Triangle Circulate as the Outpoints are inactive. Outpoint Triangle Circulate From Diamonds >Outpoints and Diamond Centers Triangle Circulate as the Inpoints are inactive. Inside Triangle Circulate From Diamonds >Points and Very Centers Triangle Circulate as the Ends of Center Wave are inactive. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Outside Triangle Circulate From Diamonds >Points and Ends of Center Wave Triangle Circulate as the Very Centers are inactive. Head Boys are Apexes, Wavebased Triangle Circulate Head Girls are Apexes, Tandem-based Triangle Circulate From Waves >Head Boys and the opposite Mini-Wave Triangle Circulate as the Head Girls are inactive. From Waves >Head Girls and the closest Tandem dancers Triangle Circulate as the Side Girls are inactive. Zing (39) From a Box > 39: Leaders ¾ Zoom as Trailers Step and ¼ In == to an Eight Chain Thru. Cross & Turn Reverse (40) From Facing Lines > 40: Beaus diagonally R-H Pull By as Belles U-Turn Back == to Out-Facing Lines. Reverse Cross & Turn Belles diagonally L-H Pull By as Beaus U-Turn Back. Swing & Circle <fraction> (41) From a ¼ Tag > 41: Centers Swing and Slip as Outside 6 circulate one position within the Outside 6 formation and Outsides Face In; next repeat once for ½; next twice for ¾; next three times for full == to a ¼ Tag. Circulate direction <fraction> Swing & Circle ¼ The direction to circulate will be clockwise if the Ends of the Center Wave are facing clockwise otherwise anti-clockwise. The <fraction> specifies fractions of circulations to return to starting positions that is the number of times to perform the entire procedure. Four times the Swing & Circle procedure is the same as <fraction>=full. From a ¼ Tag R-H Wave >Centers Swing and Slip=>Outside 6 circulate one position clockwise within the Outside 6 formation. Swing & Circle ½ From a ¾ Tag L-H Wave >Centers Swing and Slip=>Outside 6 circulate one position anti-clockwise within the Outside 6 formation and Outsides Face In >repeat once. Swing & Circle From Mini-Waves and a L-H Wave >Centers Swing and Slip as Outside 6 circulate one position anti-clockwise within the Outside 6 formation and Outsides Face In >repeat once for ½ >twice for ¾ >three times for full==to starting positions but Outsides are Facing In. Mona Törnqvist (38)

Relay the Shadow (42) From a Tidal Wave > 42: all Trade; next Center 6 Cast Off ¾ as very Ends Counter Rotate ¼; next new Center 4 Hinge and Spread as others do Centers part of Cast a Shadow == to Parallel Waves. {3} Starts as Relay the Deucey and ends as Cast a Shadow. Swing the Fractions (43) From Parallel Waves > 43: those who can perform a right shoulder Cast Off ¼; next left Cast Off ½; next right Cast Off ¾; next left Cast Off ½; next right Cast Off ¼ == to Parallel Waves. {5} Swing the Fractions From R-H Parallel Waves > all Cast Off ¼ > Centers L Cast Off ½ > all R Cast Off ¾ > Centers L Cast Off ½ > all R Cast Off ¼ {5}== to Parallel Waves. Swing the Fractions ½ From R-H Parallel Waves > all Cast Off ¼ > Centers L Cast Off ½ > all R Cast Off ¼ => all R Cast Off 1/8 {2.5}== to Parallel Waves. The last fraction is a half of a Cast Off ¾, which will be a ¼ + 1/8. Stretch concept (44) From various formations > 44: perform <anything> but Centers move to the closest Center s spot in the other Split half of the formation == to various formations. Stretch Shakedown Often, <anything> can be performed while Centers move to the other half as one movement. From Out-Facing Lines >Shakedown=>Centers Interlock. Stretch Shakedown as one movement From Out-Facing Lines >Halfway, Centers pass each other first=>shakedown is finished. Stretch Recycle as one movement From Parallel Lines >Recycle, Ends the normal way, Centers while streching as in Ferris Wheel. Mona Törnqvist (38)
