1 SURF SPORTS Surf Sports on the northern beaches is in a fantastic position with Competitors, Officials, Club Coaches and Administrators all positive and supportive of the direction it has taken. It was pleasing to see Clubs working together to deliver some fantastic carnivals, especially over the Australia Day weekend. Also Avalon Beach taking on the Junior/ Masters Branch carnivals at Palm Beach and delivered an outstanding event with the help of Palm Beach in letting them use the clubhouse and storage facilities. The BoSS is made up of 11 fantastic and dedicated Advisers who have a real passion for the sport and the direction going forward. Each Adviser has a panel and this is where I encourage members of Clubs with the same passion for the different sections to please make contact and join the panels next season. Advisers sitting on the BoSS last season were: Lifesaving Steve Haggett (Dee Why) R&R Sue Troy (Freshwater) March Past Garry Cook (Newport) Beach Martin Lynch (Newport) and Michael Gedz (Queenscliff) Boats Alex Hill (Manly) Water and Craft - Peter Tullett (Newport) High Performance David Rees (Warriewood) Carnival Review Louis Tassone (North Curl Curl) Powercraft Nigel Penn (Bilgola) Officials Chris Dooley (North Steyne) Gear Keith Abraham (North Steyne) I would like to thank each of you and your panels for the dedication and support over the past 12 months as we continue to drive and improve surf sports within SNB. The major change to BoSS for season is three new Advisers: Officials Matt Molinia (Dee Why) R and R Alan Burns (Freshwater) Boats (to be announced) I would like to thank Alex Hill, Sue Troy and Chris Dooley for their dedication and passion in these portfolios and their support over the past two years and I welcome the new Advisers to their roles. The aim of BoSS is to deliver surf sports events that are safe, well organised and to continually look at ways of improving the experience for Competitors, Officials and spectators and we monitor this via the surveys we send out after each carnival and our Club forums. Major achievements in this area over the past year have been: Craft carnivals an increase in participation and also the introduction of the under14/15 craft carnival at Dee Why. Beach carnival Queenscliff beach carnival was another success so we are looking at doing junior and senior combined carnival next season and including 1/2km events. The delivery of these events in SNB is a massive task due to the sheer numbers of competitors and the size of the Branch. We rely heavily on the 21 Clubs in the Branch to provide assistance and support and we would like to thank the following for their efforts and contribution throughout the season: ANNUAL REPORT Host Clubs and carnival organisers and the work parties as there were 30 events during the past season Seven open carnivals Two carnivals were shorter formats Nine boat carnivals Nine Junior carnivals One beach carnival at Queenscliff One fast fives craft at Dee Why Three Masters carnivals Four Lifesaving carnivals Palm Beach for hosting the Branch Open Championships. A big thank you for a well run event. Avalon Beach for hosting the Junior/ Masters and Branch Board Riding Championships. A fantastic effort. Carnival Referees and the ESOs appointed by the Branch Carnival Officials who attended carnivals as we don t have events without your efforts-all 321 officials. And welcome to the 80 new Officials who completed their Level 1 officials accreditation during the season. Water safety from each of the 21 Clubs for our Junior carnivals and also our powercraft personnel. The scrutineering team lead by Gary

2 Beauchamp as we ran four sessions during the season. High performance and Branch coaches and team management Dave Rees, Tony Williams, Michael Gedz, Tom Atkinson and everyone else who helped over the season. Thanks to all the Club Coaches and Administrators for all the hours you put in to get the competitors on the beach and in the water. Also our Branch office and, in particular, Marcial Nunura as the SNB Branch Surf Sports Manager. The season would not be such a success without Marcial s great efforts. Season highlights We conducted 35 events including our Branch Championships and attracted 12,475 competitors. These were made up of 5,389 Nippers, 850 Masters, 2,593 boats, 167 lifeaving, 150 boardriding and 3,326 open competitors. SNB Branch team competed at Cape Hawke in the NSW Inter Branch Championships and successfully defended the title. Congratulations to team members and all those involved with the team. A special thanks to the selectors and coaches who travel to our selection carnivals. They dedicate a lot of time to this process to ensure we pick the strongest team and provide training sessions. Graham Bruce (Manly) Ian Miller (Queenscliff) Marty Quinn (Dee Why) Tony Williams (North Curl Curl) Kendrick Louis, Dane Farrell, Max Brooks, Georgia Miller and Nathan Smith competed in this year s KNG iron series and well done to all with some strong results. Manly won the Junior point score at Branch as did Newport with the Open point score. The NSW Junior Championships were also won by Manly for the seventh year in a row and Newport for the third year in succession in the State Open carnival. Newport then followed up with a third at the Australian Championships and Manly were seventh. SNB was well represented at the Aussie titles with strong showing from across our 21 Clubs. The Branch claimed 25 per cent of all medals on offer, so an outstanding result. Our teams did the Branch and their Clubs proud with some outstanding results to name a few: Palm Beach picking up both Under 23 men s and women s gold medals in boats, Newport male and female Taplin Relay teams taking gold and Newport winning the three men s ski relay events Open, under 19 and under17. Collaroy and Freshwater showed their dominance in the R and R area picking up six medals between them and Collaroy (Bears) also won the March Past. The Masters also delivered some fantastic results at both the NSW and Australian titles, so well done to everyone. SNB Clubs were well represented at the Australian Youth Championships, so a big thank you to all of those who competed on the Sunshine Coast. Congratulations to the SNB athletes who represented NSW at the Interstate Championships at Torquay in Victoria Hannah Minogue (Newport) Taylar Puskaric (Manly) Jay Furniss (Manly) Mitchell Trim (Newport) Max Brooks (Newport) Dane Farrell (Newport) Naomi Scott (Manly) Charlie Brooks (Newport) Isaac Smith (Newport) Congratulations to the SNB athletes who were selected to represent Australia in the Netherlands for the World Championships Dane Farrell (Newport) Georgia Miller (Newport) Jake Lynch (Newport) Charlie Brooks (Newport) Isaac Smith (Newport) Callum Lowe-Griffths (Queenscliff) Congratulations to the Avalon Under 23 male boat crew who represented Australia during the year in the Trans Tasman championships. Surf Sports is not all about winning but about developing those surf skills, being a part of a team and mateship. To those that attend a carnival or Club event well done. Within the Branch we recognise these achievements at our Annual Awards of Excellence and congratulations to this year s winners. 5 SNB RETAIN INTER BRANCH TITLE Sydney Northern Beaches not only retained the NSW Inter Branch title but recorded one of the biggest wins in the history of competition at Cape Hawke. SNB held a 66-point lead after the first day of competition and went onto win the overall point score by 70 points from Sydney Branch and Central Coast at the two day carnival in Forster on December 12 and 13 last year. As a result of our Branch success, we had 10 athletes chosen in the NSW team for the Inter State championships Mitchell Trim, Dane Farrell, Max and Charlie Brooks, Isaac Smith, Jay Furniss, Dean Scarff, Hannah Minogue, Taylar Puskaric and Naomi Scott. A new format was introduced by SLSNSW for the championships to fall in line with the Inter State titles: age groups U/12-15 s, Youth being U/17 s and Open s being U/19 and Open competitors. There were also a few new events added, with board rescue being a mixed gender event and the introduction of two person, mixed gender board and ski relays. The team travelled by coach on Friday, December 11 and arrived at our usual accommodation, when travelling to Forster, the Smugglers Cove Holiday Village where the temperature was a balmy 37 degrees. Once we entered our cabins we were greeted with temperatures of 40 degrees-plus, but all was good once we put on the old wall rattling air conditioners. Within three hours, the temperature crawled down to a cool 36 degrees. Saturday s competition started with the beach relays, swim and sprint events, followed by the boards, flags and ironman/ women events. In the water, we started off slowly in the point score with the swim events, although we didn t have much luck in those events. However, we more than made up for that in the board and ironman events. On the beach, our runners and flaggers gave an inspiring and courageous performance which secured team SNB valuable points. After a great first day of competition. it was announced that we were ahead in the point score. Now, I know we performed well on Saturday, but we had no idea that we would have such a big lead. That set us up to be confident for Sunday s racing. Sunday morning is all about team events, with board rescue, board and ski relays and, of course, Cameron and Taplin relays. We were determined to finish off where we had left off on Saturday. And that we did, winning and placing in many of Sunday s events. At the presentation it was announced we had amassed 1242 points 70 points clear of Sydney Branch. Congratulations to all competitors. Not only did they perform to the best of their ability, but they also showed sportsmanship and humility.
