1 SURF SPORTS MICHAEL KIRKBY DIRECTOR It is with some sadness that I hand over the reins as Director of Surf Sports for the next two seasons. I have enjoyed the experience and hope that the legacy that the outgoing BOSS has left will provide a solid starting point for the new BoSS led by Darren Warrener 38 There is a good feeling about surf sports on the Northern Beaches. Competitors, Officials, Club coaches and administrators are all positive about the progress that has been made over the past two seasons, and the platform is set for further improvement over the coming seasons. This platform has been largely set by the BoSS, who has worked tirelessly over the past 12 months representing all Clubs and members. The BoSS for the last season was appointed with requirements under the Constitution maintained, but the areas of responsibility were carefully aligned with the sport s individual sectors. This newly structured BoSS worked efficiently, effectively and allowed a dedicated focus on all sectors and all aspects of surf sports. The involvement of Clubs and individual members needs to be maintained, but this has been achieved through participation on individual panels dedicated to a particular section, or at one of the forums held for all Clubs and members. Advisors sitting on the BoSS last season were: Life Saving Steve Haggett [Dee Why] R&R Peter Obern [Freshwater] March Past Gary Cook [Newport] Beach Martin Lynch [Newport] Boats Alex Hill [Manly] Water and Craft Darren Warrener [Avalon Beach] High Performance David Rees [Warriewood] Carnival Review Louis Tassone [North Curl Curl] Powercraft Nigel Penn [Bilgola] Officials Janine Fahey [Collaroy] In addition to the Advisor positions, we invited Keith Abraham to attend the meetings representing the area of Equipment. I would like to thank all the above mentioned people for offering their time to sit on the BoSS and for all the hard work they have done over the past 12 months. The aim of the BoSS was to deliver surf sports events in Sydney Northern Beaches that are safe, well organised, and that leave competitors, officials, Club coaches, administrators, and spectators satisfied. I believe this aim was achieved last season, with the feedback received from members and Clubs throughout the season that there had been a big improvement compared to previous seasons. The underlying objective is to increase participation across the sport, and the BoSS believes achieving the above mentioned aim will ultimately lead to the desired increases. We did not see the increase in participation this year, but the general view is that increased participation will follow the improvements in the delivery of the events. Specific goals were to: Increase officials numbers Officials registered in totalled 338, while the season saw 375 officials. The goal was achieved. Improve the carnival experience Surveys of officials and members throughout the season all resulted in a more positive response referring to an improved carnival experience. Ensure ongoing safety and wellbeing of competitors and officials There were no serious injuries recorded at carnivals during the past season. The delivery of these events in Sydney Northern Beaches is a massive task due to the sheer size of Branch and the participation numbers that already exist. This task relies heavily on the actions of volunteers from across the 21 member Clubs. The following organisations and people must be thanked for their contribution over the season: Carnival organisers and host Clubs and their working parties there were 25 events held in the past season. Carnival Referees and ESO s appointed by the Branch. All carnival officials who assisted throughout the season, without their work we could not conduct a carnival. Our team of 375 officials put in more than 8000 hours on the beach over the season. The powercraft personnel who set up and pack down our carnivals. They are first on the beach and last off every time. Our team of equipment scrutineers and gear stewards, led by Gary Beauchamp. The Branch team coaches and management team Dave Rees, Sue Rossi, Scott Jones, Tim Hayes, Tony Williams, Michael Gedz, Marty Lynch and everyone else who helped with the team. Club coaches and administrators. Our sponsors who help make all this possible. Finally, the season could not be delivered successfully without the tireless work of the team at the Branch Office. In particular, the role Marcial Nunura plays as the SNB Branch Surf Sports Officer is essential to the success of the season. A full season report on surf sports was prepared at the conclusion of the competition season on Sydney Northern

2 Beaches, and this report can be sourced from SLSSNB. This report outlines the season aims and objectives, and provides a commentary and analysis of the outcomes in addition to individual reports from each of the advisors in respect of their section. The report also outlines a series of recommendations for next season that should be considered by the incoming BoSS. Surf sports events are organised to allow competitors to be involved and compete at the level they are capable. This past season on the Northern Beaches we delivered: 3 Traditional Open carnivals at Queenscliff, Manly and Freshwater. 2 New format Open craft carnivals at Freshwater and Newport. 8 Boat carnivals at Bilgola, Newport, Warriewood, Long Reef, Queenscliff, Manly, Freshwater and Collaroy. 4 Masters carnivals at Freshwater, Long Reef, Collaroy and Palm Beach. 3 Traditional Nipper carnivals at Manly, Queenscliff, Narrabeen Beach. 2 Special events at Dee Why, Freshwater, And, of course, the Branch Championships over two weekends at Collaroy Beach. There were 13,700 entries at carnivals, made up of 5563 Nippers, 983 Masters, 3289 Boat competitors, and 3865 open and age group competitors. While most of those who entered carnivals did so for the healthy and enjoyable sport, a select group excelled, and, as usual, Sydney Northern Beaches produced some of the country s finest surf sport athletes. Our Branch team represented SNB proudly and finished a creditable second at the NSW Interbranch Championships, held at Soldiers Beach on the Central Coast. Bronte Sloan, Mieke Kassulke, Max Brooks, Jake Lynch, Kendrick Louis, Georgia Miller represented NSW in the SLSA Interstate Championships at Newport. Jake Lynch and Naomi Flood have been selected in the Australian team to compete in France later this year. Georgia Miller was selected in the Australian Youth team for Rescue Kendrick Louis started the season by winning the Coolangatta Gold short course, and gave top performances in the Nutri Grain Series, finishing in third place. Nathan Smith, Hayden Allum and Devon Halligan all qualified for the Nutri Grain series and represented themselves and their SNB Clubs proudly. Manly won the Junior Branch Championships yet again, while Newport dominated the Open Branch Championships. The NSW State Championships played out a similar story with Manly winning their fifth successive State Junior Championship, while Newport took their Branch form into State taking home first place for the first time in the history of the Club. The following Clubs sent teams to this year s Aussies: Manly, Newport, Queenscliff, Collaroy, Freshwater, North Steyne, Mona Vale, Dee Why, Palm Beach, North Curl Curl, Bilgola, South Curl Curl, Avalon Beach, South Narrabeen, Whale Beach, Long Reef. 5 SNB INTERBRANCH The Interbranch Championships were held at Soldiers Beach, on the Central Coast. SNB went into the championships fielding a strong, well prepared team. The team went into camp on Friday December 13 and Scotty Jones and his coaching team made sure the trip was entertaining as well as keeping the athletes focused on the job over the weekend. refuelled with plenty of wholesome food. It was around about this time that we found out the point score after the first day s events. SNB were in second place, approximately five points behind Sydney Branch. Scott Jones used this to call on the athletes for a concerted team effort for the next day s events as the point score was so close, every race and every point would be crucial if SNB were to win the Championship. Saturday morning and the beach conditions greeted all athletes with extremely strong onshore winds and fluky wind chop surf conditions. As expected, racing was tough against strong opposition that proved even tougher given the conditions. The team raced extremely well with some fantastic individual and team performances. We would have had even more pleasing results if it hadn t been for a fair bit of jagging happening to some of our athletes that were leading races coming into the wave area, but hey, that s surf racing. It was a long day, in which we didn t get off the beach until about 4 pm, which is unusual for an Interbranch carnival. Once back at camp Cathy Meaney and her management team ensured that everyone THE SNB INTERBRANCH TEAM U/12 WATER Jonah Gerritson - Queenscliff Logan Kaye - Queenscliff Eliza Curll - Manly Georgia Singleton - Manly U/12 BEACH Angus McBean - Manly Lily Marsters - Manly Sunday morning and the weather conditions were much more favourable compared to Saturday. Again we had some great results and knew it was going to be a close finish in the point score. In the end it wasn t our day and Sydney Branch beat us to first place by 22 points. I believe that it was a successful weekend and one that the athletes enjoyed. I would like to thank all the athletes that took part, all the volunteer coaches, management, chaperones, selectors and parents that helped out throughout the 2013 Interbranch Championship campaign.
