Almost 1,000 athletes from 35 different clubs came together to attend the competition hosted by Ocean Grove SLSC for a variety of beach and water events. The competition was so close, the final result was not announced until Monday after the results had been carefully counted. Finishing up on 478 points, Mordialloc won by only 11 points after beating out Anglesea SLSC, whose final total was 467 points. Half Moon Bay SLSC came in third on 360 points, followed by Ocean Grove SLSC on 330 points, Torquay SLSC on 225 points and Point Leopold on 224 points. Individually, Torquay Surf Life Saving Club had a hugely successful day with Tess Dubbcrley, Millie Holding and Soph Thomas taking home 23 gold, five silver and four bronze medals for a total of 32 medals between them. LSV sport events co-ordinator Tom Mitchell said the second day of competition was exciting for competitors and spectators alike. "We saw some exciting finishes across the competition and strong performances from both bayside and coastal clubs alike." Winners from the weekend will now set their sights on the Australian Lifesaving Championships to be held at Scarborough Beach in Western Australia from March 31 to April 6. 7 Warrnambool Standard, Warrnambool VIC 18 Mar 2014, by Surf Lifesaving Justine Mccullagh-Beasy General News, page cm² Regional - circulation 10,704 (MTWTFS-) ID PAGE 1 of 2 Kerr gets back on board Fourth successive open men s title after frantic sprint fi nish SURF LIFESAVING By JUSTINE McCULLAGH-BEASY WARRNAMBOOL athlete Stephen Kerr survived a sprint finish to win his fourth consecutive Victorian Life Saving Championships open men s board title on the weekend. Kerr was one of three Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club members to collect gold at the Ocean Grove-based titles. Teenage pair Jane McMeel and Eve Aulsebrook saluted in the under 17 women s beach run and under 17 women s board events respectively. They combined with Freya Parrotte to win bronze in the open women s board relay. Matthew Hardiman snared silver in the under 15 men s board race and joined Paddy Carr and Mick Slockwitch to claim silver in the under 15 men s board relay. Kerr said the open men s board win was his sixth overall. The junior coach credited his vast experience for giving him an edge in the fight to the finish. It was a tough paddle. The conditions on Sunday were fairly tough, he said. There was a metre-anda-half swell running and an offshore cross wind to paddle into. At the first turning mark I managed to hit the lead and around the buoys I managed to build a gap. A young Lorne competitor Darcy Hansen joined me in on a wave and it was a sprint to the finish. The tide was up so I p was lucky it was a shorter sprint. Kerr said Aulsebrook, McMeel and Parrotte s success in the open women s board relay was a breakthrough for the club. It was our first medal in that event for 10 years, he said. It s good to see the young girls step up in open Eve and Jane came up from under 17s. Kerr praised Aulsebrook and said McMeel handled the competition pressure well. It was Eve s first individual board medal, he said. It was a terrific paddle by her. Jane was second last year in the under 17 girls two-kilometre beach run and managed to turn the tables and get gold. It s been a very successful couple of weeks so hopefully we get more into the senior state team next year. Kerr said Slockwitch had found form at the right time of the season. He was one of our under 14 competitors the weekend before (at the junior state titles) and it was his first senior carnival, he said. After his performances at the junior titles we managed to chat to him and get him to go to the senior ones and he acquitted himself well. Warrnambool took 20 competitors to the championships. Port Fairy s Jake Hetherington finished behind joint winners Mordialloc s Matthew Taylor and Mooloolaba s Joel Simondson in the under 19 men s board race and was the club s sole medallist. Close to 1000 competitors from 35 lifesaving clubs donned their caps for a host of surf and sand events at Ocean Grove, for the two-day Victorian Lifesaving Championships. Life Saving Victoria senior sports co-ordinator Tom Mitchell said the weather had been kind despite a grim weekend forecast. Kira Kinsey, of Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, was named the competition s iron woman, while Joel Simondson, formerly of Anglesea surf club, won the iron man event. The men s team from Half Moon Bay Surf Lifesaving Club was victorious in the six-person taplin relay for the third year running. Mr Mitchell said Ocean Grove lifesavers had made the most of the home beach advantage, with the club s Mark Graham second in the iron man competition. Chris Hingston, Photo: Paul Jeffers

The scholarship is awarded in memory of Maurie Raynor, who was an inspirational coach to Victorian Lifesaving athletes in the 70s and 80s, in the golden era of Surf Life Saving in Victoria. Following Maurie s passing, a number of lifesaving athletes who had been coached by him created a trust, with the intention to support young lifesaving athletes who showed great potential who could use a boost to take their sporting ability to the next level.
11 The scholarship was first awarded in 2002, and it s our way of passing the baton onto the next generation of lifesaving athletes, in honour of how Maurie helped us achieve success. The scholarship is awarded to provide financial support for an aspiring Victorian lifesaving athlete. The scholarship can either be used as a boost to get to the national Surf Life Saving titles, or to purchasing equipment for their lifesaving sport.
