3 California Introduction Have you ever wanted to visit Hollywood? If you re interested in seeing how and where movies are made, or in visiting Disneyland to see your favorite cartoon characters, you should visit California. California is a west coast state located by the Pacific Ocean and is known for its beaches. I chose California for my report because it is my favorite state and I love the cities there. In my report, I will be writing about California s history, location, government, industries, facts, famous residents, and more on why you should visit this beautiful state. Location California is located at a longitude and latitude of N, W. California is 163,696 square miles and is the third largest state in the US. According to the 2010 census, there are around 37,253,956 people living in the state. The time zone for California is the Pacific Time Zone. The capital city is Sacramento, located in northern part of the state. The bordering states are Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona. The bordering country in the south is Mexico. Climate, Weather, and Physical Features The climate for California is very diverse depending on where you are in the state. In the Central Valley, it can get up to 100 degree Fahrenheit in the summer, and as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. It does not snow in the valley or along the coast, but it does snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The major rivers are the Stanislaus River, Tuolumne River, and 3 C a l i f o r n i a
4 Sacramento River. One of the most popular lakes to go to is Lake Tahoe. There are many types of landforms in California such as the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Death Valley, Mojave Desert, Sequoia and Redwood forests, and Yosemite National Park. History The state of California was first inhabited by native tribes such as the Yokuts, Karuk, Miwok, Chumash, Pomo, Serrano, and Wappo. In 1542, Spanish settlers came to California through the San Diego bay. The Spanish built missions in California to convert the natives to Christianity and to establish settlements for Spain. The name California is a Spanish word that means a mythical paradise. Many new settlers of all types of backgrounds came to California during the Gold Rush Era from 1848 to California became a state on September 9, Government Based off of the 2016 Presidential election, California voted primarily Democratic. This also held true for the 2010 State elections. The state governor is Jerry Brown. The senators are Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein. There are 53 house representatives in office. A few of those house representatives are Jeff Denham, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Lee, Ami Bera, Tom McClintock, Mike Thompson, Juan Vargas, Mark Takano, and Karen Bass. California has 55 electoral votes. 4 C a l i f o r n i a
5 Economy, Resources, and Industry Some of the manufactured goods in California are electrical equipment, computers, phone technology, and aircraft parts. Man-made materials include movies and technical equipment like speakers, lights, and sound boards. One of the biggest industries is agriculture. Some of those crops include orchards with almonds, wheat, corn, zucchini, grapes, carrots, and strawberries. California makes a huge profit off of tourism. People from all over the country enjoy visiting Disneyland, Universal Studios, Hollywood, Yosemite National Park, and California s many beaches. California has a large movie and music industry, as well as a reputation for a lot of grape/wine production. Famous Person A famous person who was born in California is George Lucas. George Lucas was born in Modesto, California, on May 14, 1944, and is still living today. Lucas is best known for his extensive film work. Some of his films include American Graffiti (1973), Star Wars IV: A New Hope (1977), and Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Lucas is the founder of Lucas Films. Today he live in Marin County, and is very involved with Lucas Films and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers. 5 C a l i f o r n i a
6 Interesting Facts and Recommendations If you want to have an adventure-filled vacation with many fun activities, California is the perfect state. California has long stretches of beaches all along the coast to enjoy the sand and go surfing. You can also take a tour of downtown Los Angeles and see the Hollywood sign. Many tourists visit San Francisco to see the Golden Gate Bridge and the Giant s stadium. If you re over 21, you can visit the beautiful Napa Valley and go wine tasting at old vineyards, If you want a deep fried Twinkie, you should go to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Conclusion Overall, California is a state with a lot of diverse history and fun activities. With California having so many different types of landscapes and parks, there is something for everyone to enjoy. I hope you will visit my state in the future. I thought my state was really interesting and I am most excited to visit Yosemite National Park. I enjoyed researching my state, especially the things to do there like hang gliding and riding a trolley. I hope you enjoyed reading about California. 6 C a l i f o r n i a
