Hikianalia crewmembers will be hosting dockside open-house canoe tours and welcomes families and people of all ages to visit this very unique canoe. Traditional voyaging canoe Hikianalia has sailed more than 2,800 miles across the Pacific to the State of California carrying a message about the critical need to address climate change by demonstrating the value of nature, the oceans and indigenous knowledge. The crew is sailing the coast of California using solar and wind power as well as using traditional Polynesian wayfinding techniques: following cues from nature including the sun, stars, waves and birds. 6 ALAHULA KAI O MALEKA C AL I FOR N I A V O Y A G E Meet Hikianalia, Sister Ship to Hōkūleʻa Hikianalia, At a Glance About Hikianalia Hikianalia is the Hawaiian name for the star Spica, which rises together with Hōkūleʻa (Arcturus) in Hawaiʻi. They are sister stars because they break the horizon together at the latitude of the Hawaiian islands. The canoe started as an escort vessel to Hōkūleʻa and is now used as a floating classroom blending ancient wisdom with modern solutions. Hikianalia specializes in scientific exploration of marine resources and training for the next generation of voyagers. Values and behavior practiced on the deck of the canoe including how to conserve resources, care for our oceans and fellow crewmembers are shared as a model for how we can live sustainably on islands or anywhere in the world. She combines the latest ecological technology with the heritage of voyaging tradition: each of her hulls contains an electric motor powered by onboard photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight to electric propulsive energy. With a zero carbon footprint, her design supports the Mālama Honua (care for Island Earth) mission. Built in Auckland, Aotearoa by Salthouse Boatbuilders Launched for sea trials on September 15, 2012 Set sail from Aotearoa to Tahiti on October 9, Arrived on October 25. Propulsion: Hikianalia, besides the wind, is powered by two photovoltaic-driven electric motors Length: 72 feet Width: 23 feet Crew Capacity: 14 Provision Capacity: 2,000 lbs Water Capacity: 220 gal Science Activities: PVS is working with partners such as the Ocean Voyages Institute, Nature Conservancy and Education Incubator to conduct science projects while on the voyage. Hye Jung Kim, the science and education specialist on the team will be collecting water samples for testing while at sea. The Ocean Voyages Institute ( is also providing the crew with tracking devices that will be tagged on to large garbage pieces found in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The crew will also be checking the stomach content of fish and taking dorsal fin samples during the voyage. Crew Updates: The crew will be doing regular navigation, science and education updates that will be posted at hokulea.com and on social on Facebook and Instagram. History: The last time PVS sailed to San Francisco was in 1995 for Hōkūleʻa s West Coast Voyage where the canoe was greeted by 32 paddling canoes and showered with orchids from the Golden Gate Bridge. A crowd estimated in the thousands gathered to greet the canoe. Kimo Lyman, Mike Tongg, and Kalepa Baybayan served as captains of the canoe.
