1 He Waka He Tangata Coastal Tour of Waka Haunui PRESS RELEASE AND INFORMATION FOR FREE KIDS HOLIDAY PROGRAMME Coastal Tour of Waka Haunui In partnership with Creative New Zealand and The Society of Maori Astronomy Research and Tradition (SMART TRUST) Haunui voyaging waka is sailing the coast between Auckland and Tauranga from September 24 th to October 7 th and offering free activities for the whole family in each stop. The 72 foot voyaging waka Haunui is a sacred and living taonga. On board are kaumoana (ocean voyagers) who have studied celestial navigation and sailed without instruments as far as San Francisco. The waka connects artists, scientists, astronomers, sailors, designers, environmentalists, oceanographers and boat builders. Wherever the waka travels it inspires people - young and old - across all these disciplines. It is said that the waka weaves together people, capturing the stories of our coastlines, our islands and our people. Acclaimed voyager, author, navigator Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr and his crew of voyaging experts welcome kids, families and grandparents to step on board Haunui, explore the waka, hear voyaging stories and meet some of the greatest sailors on the planet. At each stop young people can explore the wonder of the stars in the SMART Trust (society of Maori Astronomy Research and Tradition) POP UP stardome. Come join our first Maori astrophysicist Dr. Pauline Harris and her team of scientists as they guide robots through Moon mazes and teach us how to measure the force of the most powerful taiaha strike.
2 Haunui Artists in Residence Anna Marbrook and Kasia Pol will work with the voyagers and local artists to create a series of live and film events in each stop. The Haunui coastal tour is part of a bigger kaupapa to share and revive the voyaging brilliance of our ancestors and excite kids about science, our oceans and the stars. Three to four thousand years ago our ancestors developed the first blue water sailing technology. Our islands were the last habitable lands in the world to be settled as they required not just feats of naval engineering but deeply sophisticated navigation systems. Several thousand years later Vikings and Westerners slowly began to cross the oceans. Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr Contact Project Managers for organizing press interviews. Anna Marbrook amarbrook@gmail.com Kasia Pol kasiapol@gmail.com For all other information and updates Find us on Haunui - Te Toki Voyaging Trust Activities For all updates and information Find us on Haunui - Te Toki Voyaging Trust See below information on the people, the sail plan and how you can get involved in each stop. The FREE school holiday program There are three activities for our whanau holiday program. For all activities no bookings are needed - just turn up and enjoy. There are no costs for any of the following.
3 Activity One Come on board Haunui and meet the voyagers. See times in schedule attached and on Facebook. Just show up and we will take you around the waka. You will meet voyagers, see how they live on the waka and learn about the the waka and how it sails. All ages welcome!! Activity Two SMART Trust travelling stardome and wananga The sessions are two and a half hours long and are best for year olds. Younger kids are welcome as long as they have parental support. Older kids are welcome too. Activities include the following. SMART Planterium Dome - Learn about Maori astronomy and navigation in our portable star dome. Random Robots- In search of Rona - Learn about programming and how to guide a robot through our Moon maze. Taiaha Force - Learn how to do experiments to measure what s the strongest Taiaha strike through Physics. Activity Three Film screening of award winning Te Mana o te Moana The Pacific Voyagers followed by a talk with Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr and Director Anna Marbrook. Recently returning from winning a World Medal at the New York Film and Television Awards. Te Mana o Te Moana The Pacific Voyagers is the epic voyage of a 100 Pan-Pacific Islanders who traverse 1000 s of nautical miles in six, traditional, 72 foot voyaging catamarans for the future of their ocean. Their homes are disappearing under rising sea levels, their food is being destroyed by overfishing and pollution. These are ordinary people - sailors, teachers, students and grandmothers. They have to act. As they revive their ancient art of voyaging they connect to ancient knowledge that will safeguard their future. The lessons of the past propel them to chart a bold new course. As they sail from New Zealand to Tahiti, USA, Galapagos and on to the Solomon Islands they reclaim their heritage as the finest sailors, celestial navigators and stewards of the Pacific. Their odyssey illuminates just how intricately all of our lives are tied to the great, but fragile, Pacific Ocean.
