2 Advice & Guidance for Beach Lifeguard Applicants Age Requirement Applicants must not be less than 17 years of age on 20 May Garda Vetting Any appointment(s) will be subject to confirmation of satisfactory garda vetting from the Central Vetting Bureau. Applicants will be contacted directly regarding the vetting process. Beach Lifeguard Application Forms available on the recruitment page of the Council s website: - Beach Lifeguard Award (a) No candidate will be offered a Beach Lifeguard post until a current Beach Lifeguard Certificate has been received by the Council. (IWS Beach Lifeguard or Royal LifeSaving Society (Ireland) or equivalent accepted.) (b) Certificates must be valid for the entire period of employment. (c) Delays in submitting the Certificate may result in a candidate not being offered a Beach Lifeguard position. (d) Candidates whose Beach Lifeguard Certificate has expired must specify on the application form the date on which they are having their certificates revalidated. Beach Lifeguard Award Courses Beach Lifeguard Courses and Re-Validation will take place in Ballyshannon and on a local beach as follows; o 17 th to 21 st April 2017 o 5 th to 9 th June 2017 o 26 th to 30 th June 2017 The Donegal-based courses will be dependent on demand and the dates are therefore subject to change. 3 Beach Lifeguard Pool Tests All applicants must successfully complete the beach lifeguard pool test, carried out by Irish Water Safety. The pool test will be held on at 9.00am on Sunday, 23rd April 2017 in Ballyshannon Leisure Centre, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. Note: This pool test has been organised by Donegal County Council. You should note that the Council does not intend to hold any other pool tests this year. If you are unable to attend this pool test, please outline reason and provide details of alternative arrangements on the application form. Candidates may complete the pool test in another local authority area, but the results must be submitted to this Council before any job offer can be made. It is the responsibility of candidates to ensure they complete a valid pool test. Elements of Beach Lifeguard Pool Test Water Practical; 200 -meter approach with can-buoy (timed under 4minutes) followed by 100-meter tow (efficiency); 25-metre head up approach, release and 25 meter carry (Front Double); 25-metre head up approach, release and 25 meter carry (Rear Double); 25-metre head up approach, release and 25 meter carry (Wrist Hold); Demonstrate deep-water resuscitation; Carry out systematic search of a designated area of the pool. (Please note that Water Work section is continuous) Land Practical; Demonstrate Basic Lift Support and Aftercare, Adult and Infant; Theory on: Basic Lift Support; First Aid; General Lifeguard Duties and Responsibilities. Interviews Candidates may be called for interview. It is proposed that interviews will be held on week beginning - Monday, 24th April 2017(tbc). Applicants will be advised of the date and venue for interview in due course.

4 Period of Employment/Attendance Lifeguards will be required for the bathing season which runs from: - 1 June September 2017 on a part time and full time basis. In that period, full time lifeguards will be required to work a six-day week and part time lifeguards as required. No leave will be granted during the period of employment. Being absent from duty without prior permission amounts to gross misconduct and dereliction of duty and will result in disciplinary procedures, up to and including dismissal. Punctuality must be observed. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary procedures, up to and including dismissal. Performance Each candidate must be in a good state of health free from any defects or diseases which would render them unsuitable for the position. Failure to meet the required standards of performance and attendance will result in disciplinary procedures, up to and including dismissal. Unsatisfactory performance will result in candidates being excluded from future competitions for the post of beach lifeguard with Donegal Local Authorities.
