2 What is a Heart Safe Community? 4 Niagara EMS Pedal Angels The Niagara EMS Pedal Angels are a group of dedicated paramedics who have been raising funds and placing AEDs throughout the region of Niagara. Over the last three years the Pedal Angels have raised more than $ and have placed 32AEDs. And have provided training for up to 500 local community responders. We developed Niagara s first Heart Safe Community in the Township of Wainfleet. Our goal is to make the Niagara Region the safest Heart Safe Community in the province of Ontario one community at a time Over the last three years the Pedal Angels have raised more than $ and have placed 30 AEDs

6 Regional Partnerships The Pedal Angels work in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Heart Niagara. We raise our funds locally through the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The Pedal Angles determine where to place AEDs in our community, and we coordinate our AED placements through Heart Niagara, our regional Public Access Defibrillator Coordinator Over the last two years the Pedal Angels have been the top fundraising team in the EMS/PAD Challenge

7 Why is resuscitation so important? Time! Time is the difference between life and death in a sudden cardiac arrest. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is working to increase the number of Canadians who survive cardiac arrest through improved bystander CPR, greater use of AEDs, and strengthening the Chain of Survival in all Canadian communities As many as 85% of all cardiac arrests occur in homes and public places

8 Why AEDs Sudden Cardiac Arrest Statistical Outcomes No Bystander CPR your friend, family member or co-worker remains in cardiac arrest. Bystander CPR currently your friend, family member or co-worker has about a 5% chance to recover. Bystander CPR and an AED currently your friend, family member, or coworker has up to a 75% chance to recover. Every year, about 40,000 Canadians experience sudden cardiac arrest, that s one incident every 12 minutes

9 AED/CPR Strategy Pedal Angels AEDs to be placed in high density population locations within urban communities AEDs to be placed at common community gathering locations within rural communities AEDs to be placed in locations that have special circumstances Each AED placement needs to be linked to a sustainable community based CPR training plan Without defibrillation chances of survival reduce by 10% each minute, with virtually no chance for survival after 10 minutes

Each AED location will be linked with a sustainable community based public awareness program and CPR training plan Even if an AED is never used, it s community placement will contribute to enhance community resuscitation engagement in the home setting Combined with CPR, the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) may increase the likelihood of saving a person s life by 75% or more over CPR alone

11 Heart Safe Community Initiative Niagara on the Lake Plan Determine common community gathering points for possible AED placement Engage community stakeholders and recipient locations within the community Establish fundraising goal and implement the fundraising plan Develop and launch a community mass AED/CPR training event Develop a community resuscitation team who will provide AED and CPR training linked to existing community AED sites Even with recent emergency resources placed in the community, paramedics and firefighters will still not be able to arrive in time to make a significant difference to someone s chances of survival without bystander CPR and use of an AED within 3minutes

In Niagara, emergency services will arrive on scene in about 6-7 minutes to begin resuscitation efforts

23 Site Based Community Fundraising Strategy Engage targeted community site locations to accept an AED and train their staff as local responders Ask each AED placement location to assist in raising funds to place the unit and provide training The closer the AED and a trained provider are to the victim, the greater the chance of survival

24 Heart Safe Communities Community CPR/AED training events supporting (Glendale, St. Davids, Virgil, Old Town) Bringing the community together to raise awareness and education about creating a Heart Safe community. We also want to provide an opportunity for everyone to feel apart of this community initiative. This event will be provided by our community partners The closer the AED and a trained provider are to the victim, the greater the chance of survival

25 Heart Safe Community AED and CPR Sustainability Program Developed as a legacy program, we will develop a community resuscitation training team. This group of community volunteers will be comprised of interested citizens from each of our community AED placement sites. The program may be managed through the NOTL Volunteer Fire Department in partnership with the Niagara EMS Pedal Angels, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Heart Niagara Niagara on the Lake will be the second complete Heart Safe community in the Niagara Region
