from the president Once again it has been a privilege and a pleasure to have been involved in our great club. It is also a pleasure to report again that we have had a great season and successfully managed our beach ensuring that no one was lost at Cape Paterson. I would like to start my report by thanking all our members every one of you. As I said we have a great club and there is one reason for this - you the members. Talking to a member last week she expressed to me how amazing it was to be able to be at the club on Bronzelow night, packed to the rafters with kids, bronzies, active members, life members, families, parents, old and new, and everyone just having a great time, celebrating the achievements that had been made in Surf Life Saving by our new bronzies. There is one reason a Surf Life Saving Club exists keeping our patrolled beach safe. And to our amazing patrolling members thank you. You guys make me so proud to be a member of Cape. This season there was an incident where an elderly lady had fallen and hurt herself on the rocks. I stayed around to see if I could assist in any way but it was quickly evident that this decrepit old clubbie was not required with a team of such caliber already on the job looking after her. I stood back, out of the way, with my children and let them observe some great first aiders in action. Congratulations to all our patrolling members on another great season none for 52, a great record. A great team like this does not just happen by chance. The patrolling team has again been capably led by Jess, Dave, Chelsea, Darcy, Nik, Laurie, Emily, Casey, Jake and of course the old Sea Dog Doogs. Thanks guys for your leadership and guidance on the beach. Thanks especially to Jess for her time as Club Captain and the great job she has done in the role. Training is always a huge part of Surf Life Saving and Chelsea, yet again you have smashed it. Arguably the most important job in the club, and the hardest, the Chief Instructor is responsible for induction of new members, organizing training camps, ensuring the skills of existing patrolling members are up to scratch and that we all know what we are doing no mean feat I tell you. I have seen Chelsea survive many bronze camps now and every one of them gets better and better each year. Well done. All this leadership and training was tested, and proven, during the season when we had our 2 patrol efficiency inspections. To get perfect points for a patrol inspection is incredible, to do it in both unbelievable. Our committee of management has again put in a tremendous effort this season. Thanks to my VP Simon for his contributions and advice, to our Treasurer Keith for keeping tabs on the dollars for us all, to David (managing hall hire and events), Francis (Aquathon co-ordinator) and Barbara (apparel) thank you for all your efforts and hard work it has been much appreciated. 2 To our Honorable Secretary, where to start? Wendy you have been great to work with and you will be sorely missed in this role you leave some pretty big flippers to fill here for sure. It is without doubt you that has kept us focused and on our toes to keep improving the club and extending ourselves whereever possible. Thank you, from me personally, for your support, your advice, your contribution and for the mentoring you have given me over the years. And thank you from the entire club for all you have done over the last 7 years as Secretary and before this in various other roles. Nippers this year started off somewhat stressful with Elise getting a job in Bangkok just prior to the season. It all came together though and showed how much work and preparation Elise had done to make it so easy for the age managers to run. We also had some great parents put their hands up and volunteer at the registration day. These guys went on to run a brilliant program. Thanks to our Age Managers - Katrina (the veteran of the team), Ross, Ray, James, Marty, Nicole and I cannot forget to mention Leesa, the keeper of time armed with a whistle to move the Nippers from station to station. Our equipment has never looked better than in recent years under the guardianship of the twin Captains Darcy and Doogs. Well done fellas with your fantastic care of the equipment and also building the knowledge in those around you to give the equipment the same respect you do. Our Comp team continues to build steadily with the team getting to several carnivals. This years Club Champs I think were the best in many years even though I was robbed in the masters flags final - look out next year TOC! Dharsh and Alex keep up the hard work and keep this growing, you are doing a great job. The Aquathon went off very well again thanks to Francis, Simon and the team. Competitor numbers were up again and the event continues to be a major fundraiser and profile builder for the club. Planning is already underway for next year to make it bigger and better than before. Other fundraising efforts continue to be an important operation for the club to cover our operational costs and build funds for the future. Again many members have contributed to this process through tin rattles, sausage sizzles, door knocks, snail races, trivia night and the Tavern raffles. Special thanks again to Arthur
and the Cape Tavern for our weekly raffle and to Doogs for taking over some of the raffles. Trivia night this year saw some new faces get involved which was very encouraging thanks to Darcy and Nick, Dave, Chels and Laurie and to Kirsty for another great night. At this time last year our beach was pretty much stripped of sand and our boatshed steps were last seen off the Prom somewhere. Thanks to Councilor Duscher for his support here in getting these rebuilt and the Councils support in general. Last year I mentioned beach access as an immediate challenge this remains the case but progress (all be it slower than desirable) has been made. The DSE has agreed with Council to a footprint for a track to give us access directly to the beach with the ATV. We will continue to pursue this to be completed for next season. Recently our building and facilities were audited, as is happening to all the clubs across Victoria, for assessment of funding priorities that were promised in the last State election. I am relatively confident that we will be somewhere in the top ten and the process of planning for this began some time ago. The Cape Paterson North development will pose new and ongoing challenges to the club. We recently met with the developers and project managers to outline our concerns with the development, including increased patronage of Firsts Surf beach, potential for overflow to Seconds, stretching of our infrastructure to service these needs, and the challenge of funding any increase of our services. > Dean Manns from the secretary On behalf of the Management Committee of the Cape Paterson Surf Lifesaving Club Incorporated, I submit for your consideration and adoption, the 52nd Annual Report and Financial Statements covering the activities of the club, for the 2011/2012 season. I would like to say that we are so fortunate to have such a hard working, committed group of volunteers. The committee never ceases to amaze me with its ongoing contributions to the community and also its ongoing efforts in making us the most family oriented club I could wish to be a member of. I have stepped back a little this year owing to work commitments but managed to assist with Nippers when Elise was offered a teaching position in Thailand at very short notice. I enjoy this involvement, to see smiling relaxed, Nippers, parents and Life Savers is great, a true measure of the volunteer. Thank you to all of the committee for your time, support and effort. This is my last season as Secretary, although this does not mean I will not remain involved, having already raising my hand for another job. > Wendy Graham 3
from the treasurer Cash and Short Term Deposits The bank balance as at 30 April 2012 was $22,513. An additional $138,519 is held in term deposits at the Westpac and Bendigo banks. During the past year an additional $25,000 term deposit was arranged, while all existing deposits were rolled over for periods of up to 12 months at interest rates between 5.5% and 6.0%. Income and Expenses The income for the 2011/2012 season was $104,335 and the expenses for the same period were $81,328. The results were a deterioration from last year with income being ~$12,000 lower while expenses were higher by a similar amount. Key items on the income statement: 1. Income for the 2011 year was distorted by by the oneoff donation of the Yamaha ATV. The 2012 income more accurately reflects the trend of past years. 2. Membership subscriptions and fundraising income were lower, while bronze camp income and apparal sales were higher. 3. Purchases for resale (apparel), training costs, equipment depreciation (non-cost item) and first aid supplies are the major increases over the past year. 4. Insurance costs are understated since some premium payments fell into the 2012/2013 financial year. The Club completed the 2011/2012 year with an accounting surplus of $23,000 which was applied to the term deposit mentioned above. Funding the Club The key areas of funding to maintain the core lifesaving activities of the Club continues to be (1) Donation/Grants/ Sponsorship, (2) Fundraising, (3) Membership subscriptions and (4) Bronze camps. raised. During summer the Patrolies raised $3500 through the Safeway sausage sizzle, Wonthaggi tin-rattle, the Easter Eggg hunt plus several Clubhouse BBQs. Evening functions at the Clubhouse including the Trivia night, Doog s Snail races, Nipper s Night out and the Bronze Presentation evening contributed $4000. Hiring the Clubhouse for weddings and private functions brought in another $1700. Significant donations have been received from the Lions Club, IGA Ritchies and Residents & Rate Payers Association. Membership subscriptions have not been materially increased for several years. However, funds decreased by $1600 last year reflecting a small drop in membership. The Club s Chief Instructor ran four Bronze camps during the summer which, together with a late payment from Wonthaggi Secondary college for the previos season, made a significant contribution to the income (net of costs) for the year. Expenses continue to receive close scrutiny. Clubhouse expenses received a boost last year with the construction of the front fence by the membership (funded the previous year through a Bass Coast council grant) and the purchase of a new commercial refrigerator for the kitchen. Much additional expense is avoided through two work parties for the year and local members (particularly Arthur Phillips) keeping an eye on the building during the off season. Audit Report Cardell Assurance and Audit have again audited the Club s accounts and their report is enclosed. > Keith Bartel. Successful grants include the VESEP grant (Laerdal defibrilator), RACV Community grant (IRB trailor for the ATV) and Westpac Community Cup grant (Laptop computer and a white-board to assist with training). Life Saving Victoria contributed $3850 towards administration costs and the Victorian government made $5000 in grant funding available. The Club membership has been active in fund-raising activities. The Cape Tavern raffles have been run throughout the year on Friday evening by Arthur Phillips. In addition the Patrolies took advantage of the Saturday evening crowd during the summer season and ran a second raffle. A total of $9500 was 4

CAPE PATERSON SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB INC. A E INDEPENDENT AUDITOR S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF CAPE PATERSON SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB INC. We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club Inc., which comprises the balance sheet as at 30 April 2012, the income statement for the year then ended, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information, and the statement by the Treasurer. Committee s Responsibility for the Financial Report The committee of the association is responsible for the preparation of the financial report, and have determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 to the financial report, is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (Vic) This responsibility also includes such internal control as the committee determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditor's Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the association's preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view, in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the association's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Basis for Qualified Auditor s Opinion Due to the nature of operations and insufficient documents to support the completeness of income, there were no satisfactory audit procedures that we could perform to obtain reasonable assurance that all receipts were recorded. The scope of the audit has been limited to the point at which the income has been recorded in the books and deposited into the association s bank account. Qualified Auditor s Opinion In our opinion, except for the possible effects of the matter described in the Basis for Qualified Auditor s Opinion paragraph, the financial report gives a true and fair view of the financial position of Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club Inc. as at 30 April 2012 and of its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Section 30(3A) of the Associations Incorporation Act (Vic) 1981 and the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial report. Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution Without modifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club Inc. to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (Vic) As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. 12 from the club captain + vice club captain Our season got off to a great start with a good turn-out at the Cape requal and patrols during December, and enthusiastic participation from many members, despite the low numbers on the beach and some cold weather. This allowed those members on patrol time for a much needed catch-up after a long off-season. This enthusiasm continued for much of the patrol season, reaching a high during January, our busiest month by far. During January we had some of the largest numbers on the beach we have had in years, and teams juggled these large numbers, along with helping out with training and other events such as the Aquathon. The season ended on a high over the Easter weekend with a fantastic turnout at the patrols, topping off what had been an incredible season. There were many individual patrollers who consistently put in an enormous amount of time and energy throughout the season. There were 9 members who completed over 100 patrol hours this season, which is an outstanding contribution to the club and surf lifesaving. The 9 patrollers were: Casey Almarker (217 hours), Josie Chambers (152), Josh Chambers (143), Jack Murphy (143), Dave Potter (135 hours), Emily Rogers (123) Laurie Aitken (123), Michael Temby (122) and Nik Foon (110). Special mention must go to Casey for completing over 200 hours (beating his previous year s effort of 183 hours)- an incredible effort. Lifesaving Victoria will officially recognise the contribution of these members later in the year at the Lifesaving Awards of Excellence. This was a handover season with several new Patrol Captains and Vice Patrol Captains stepping up and meeting the challenges of the roles. Returning Patrol Captains Darcy Manks and David Potter were joined by Laurie Aitken and Nick Foon, supported by Vice Patrol Captains Chelsea Bowman, Jake Hedley and Emily Rogers and new VPC Casey Almarker. The Patrol Captains and Vice Patrol Captains make up our Beach Operations Committee ( BOC ), led by the Club Captain and Vice Club Captain. BOC met several times during this season and kept in regular contact through a Facebook thread, with the Patrol Captain on duty reporting to all other PCs and VPCs at the end of a patrol on issues such as equipment, patrol numbers and beach attendance. This proved to be a good initiative and enabled an effective hand-over between patrols. There is a lot of work that goes into organising, managing and coordinating a patrol. To the PCs and VPCs, thank you for your enthusiasm, commitment and your support of each other throughout the season. Even though at times during the season we had some difficulty achieving a full patrol, the patrol inspections this year went by without a hiccup. In our two patrol inspections, our patrol teams on duty achieved full points, which is an amazing result and shows our member s abilities to manage and run effective patrols. Well done to the Patrol Captains Em Rogers and Laurie Aitken, who were on duty during the inspections and to everyone on patrol. These results will make us one of the top clubs in the State in Lifesaving Victoria s patrol audit competition, with state-wide results published later this year. For the third season in a row, BOC ran a Patroller of the Month competition. This award is given to the person that BOC 10
considers to be the most valuable member of the patrols that month. For the 2011/2012 season they are as follows: December - Jack Clements Jack has been around almost every weekend during summer, usually out on the boards. Jack performed our one and only rescue at Cape Pat for the season with professionalism and confidence. He spotted the situation whilst out on a roving patrol and quickly sprung into action! January- Sara Stanvi Sara is one of our most helpful people on patrol. She was always willing to help out if anyone asked. She was also down most weekends during January and was very eager to be there! Andrew Naps Napoleone Naps only completed his Bronze and joined the Club this season and he showed great enthusiasm when on patrol. He was always willing to help out and in addition to this, he obtained his IRB Crew award over the IRB camp. February- Roh Taylor It was fantastic to see Roh almost every single weekend during February. He was really reliable to have there as he was always keen to get involved and help out, especially with the boats. Roh has also begun training for over the IRB crew certificate. March- Brad and Tim Lenders Tim and Brad seem to always travel around together and around Cape was no exception. Both of them have shown great commitment to the club with their patrolling efforts. Congratulations to all of you and thank you for your efforts! > Jess Bowman (Club Captain) and David Potter (Vice Club Captain) As well as patrolling, which is the basis of our club, our members also did many other activities throughout the season from within our own club to the much wider community of Surf Life Saving Australia. This year one of our senior members and Chief Instructor, Chelsea, represented both our club and the State at the National Leadership College in Sydney. In addition to this our members have traveled to Waratah Beach SLSC for the Bass District Lifesaving Development Camp. With five of our members attending the camp and three acting as instructors. This was terrific to see our members out networking within our district, state and at a national level. The season ended on a high (although perhaps a low point for fashion) with the events over the Easter Weekend including the Lifesaver Thank you Party, with a dress-up theme of togas. Many people put a lot of effect into their costumes- several wore mini togas fashioned from a kids cartoon sheet, whilst others had gone all-out with custom made togas in bright colours. This enthusiasm made for a fantastic night for all to enjoy. The end of season party is a way for the Club to say thank you for all the hard work and hours that the members have dedicated to the club during the season. 11

from the chief instructor The season of was another phenomenal season. We welcomed 89 new lifesavers into our patrols and old and new members gained a total of 178 awards, over a third of which were an advanced award. During the season we ran four week long Bronze Medallion Camps for Kew High School, Koo Wee Rup Secondary School and Wonthaggi High School as well as the Summer Bronze Camp. Early on in the season was unusually hectic as we ran the three school bronze camps within 6 weeks which meant the trainers were well practised by the third camp. The candidates were a fantastic bunch and many of them have returned to patrol throughout the season, with 4 out of the 6 `patroller of the month awards going to new bronzies. In addition to the bronze camps, we ran training courses in the Basic Emergency Care Certificate and Resuscitation Certificate for Nippers aged years and an IRB camp over Labour Day weekend in March. The IRB Camp is a highlight for the quieter months of the season and it was great to see so many boat enthusiasts in the one place and the swell didn t disappoint those who wanted to test out their surf negotiation skills. This season had been important for developing members leadership skills in both the patrolling and training aspects of lifesaving. Seven members including myself attended State or National development camps. Melanie Burns, Josie Chambers, Josh Chambers, Calum Smith and Nik Foon all represented Cape Paterson at the Bass District Development Camp, making Cape Pat SLSC proud by completing a total of 17 awards between them in under a week. The scenariobased training at the development camp enables candidates to further develop their leadership skills. I am confident that all our participants will make amazing patrol captains one day. Roh Taylor was also recently selected to attend the Victorian U15 development camp and is already proving how dedicated and enthusiastic he is. Finally, I was lucky enough to attend the National Leaders in Lifesaving Camp in Sydney, where I learnt a wealth of information and skills about being a leader and how I can use these skills to help my club and district continue to improve our standards as lifesavers, both on and off the beach. While this season hasn t made records for award numbers, it was an extremely important season for our members to realise how far we have come and how we can still improve. There are so many young members who are high achievers and have showed outstanding devotion to the club including Casey 14
Almarker who patrolled over 200 hours and Laurie Aitken who shared the load of Chief Instructor and will take on the role of Head Trainer next season. The twins, Josie and Josh Chambers, continue to inspire me with their dedication to patrols and enthusiasm to complete new awards. David Potter juggled numerous roles of responsibility including Vice Club Captain, Patrol Captain and organising the Bass District Development Camp. Darcy Manks keeps the club running smoothly, whether it s fixing an IRB motor or a door jamb, he simply gets the job done. There are also the members who quietly do their job and are always reliable including Emily Rogers, Nik Foon, Jack Murphy, Michael Temby and Sean Moroney. Lastly I d like to acknowledge some new Bronzies who were always around to lend a hand - Tahli Langbourne, Annie Bloomfield, Bridget Shanks and Andrew Napoleon. There are so many members in Cape Paterson SLSC who contribute to our success and make me want to come back next season, to run more camps, complete more awards and push the bar higher. Thank you to every member for inspiring me for the season. Water safety and helpers Casey Almarker, Dharshini Brennan, John Zakharia, Bassam Walsh, Lucy Taylor, Michael Temby, Calum Smith, Riley Manks, Alex Pineau, Lachy Sheppard, Hayley Rogers, from the irb captain Another damage free season in the boats! It is always good to end the season without irreparably breaking any boats or crewmen, despite some very nearly disastrous attempts. The season kicked off with a few rescues including the recovery of a submerged vessel at the bay. Doogs and Temby somehow managed to dramatically rescue of a pair of wayward kayakers, displaying the gutsiest IRB rescue that I have ever seen, narrowly escaping the jaws of undertow bay in a big dirty swell. Once again we had a keen group for our IRB camp for which we had better than usual weather. During the camp trainees had the chance to practice in a variety of conditions over three days and had a go at towing, rollovers and surfing. We were also fortunate enough to see pod of dolphins, a rare treat at cape! On exam day all trainee crewmen and drivers performed spectacularly and passed with flying colours. Toward the end of the season as the swell lifted and the seaweed washed in, several of our drivers had some scary experiences and discovered just how quickly cape can turn nasty. Fortunately our drivers sensibly negotiated these conditions and we made it through another season. Great season folks! >Darcy Manks 15
from the nipper delegate It was another exciting season at Cape Paterson for our Nipper Squad. The numbers were slightly down on 2010/11 but the interest remained high. A few changes were made from last season with different social events and the restructuring of the Nipper Club Championships. Thanks to LSV all nippers received a bag to store things in and as part of the membership their nipper hat. The start of the 2011/12 season posed a huge challenge to me and fortunately I had already set most things up for the season ahead. I was successful in gaining a position as a Primary School Physical Education teacher in an International school in Bangkok, Thailand. This offer was made in late November and I was to commence in the fi rst week of January But thanks to the willing Age Managers, Lifesavers and my Mum the programme continued with out a hitch and I was kept involved and informed being told the programme was running well. As required by LSV all nippers undertake their S or T Badge to ensure they are safe in the water. They were all assessed as Brilliant and so into the water they went. Also during the season a large squad of older nippers successfully undertook their Resuscitation awards. This year we went to the movies in Wonthaggi and later had Nipper Night In. Games were played, food was eaten, a movie was watched, more food was eaten, games were played and yes food was eaten. The nippers went home tired but full of fun. A thought for next year is a picnic and tour of the Wonthaggi Coal Mine!! The Nipper Club Championships went very well thanks to parent helpers and Age Managers and of course the Life Savers. They were run very smoothly with a lot of Personal Bests achieved. A big thankyou to everyone who assisted with the nipper programme from cooking sausages to selling apparel, it is all appreciated. I would especially like to thank my Mum for stepping in at the last moment, which is what she so often does. I am unable to continue in the role as I will be in Bangkok for another 2 years. I wish all nippers of the future, fun and success in their skill development and surf awareness. >Elise Graham from the gear steward A few observations in fi nishing... All our new gear this season Salty (the A.T.V.), Boris (new motor) and I.R.B trailer, pity the new rescue boards where not up to the job but we are working with Dolphin to resolve the issues with them. The competition board paddlers having to tell me how they dinged their craft, they were a bit scared to tell me and it was As in the past few seasons fun to see them sweat. work for bringing the gear to Captain Darcy you are the I.R.B. Captain, you drive them and serviceable condition for the love them and I let you use them, if you are a good boy. ;-) coming season starts on grand fi nal weekend. This involves a gathering of our good Josh and his crew put themselves between the boat and the members with a bit of elbow grease and fun to get things in rocks at bay point after a motor failure looking after the gear on order and watch the grand fi nal. Thanks Darcy, Riley, Foony, the extreme level of care. Doc, Chels, Em, Naps, Dave P.,Lori, Casey. Josh, Jose and all Thanks for a great season everyone from Captain Doogs. the other people who over the season made my job easy with your assistance to keep things repaired and running thankyou >Mark Capt Doogs Legg from me and the committee of C.P.S.L.S.C. 16
from the team managers As stated in the Annual General Report last year, our aim was to make it to the Victorian State Championships. We made it- 4 competitors, including Dan Norrie and Lachy Sheppard! We also had a few placing s in open swim from all competitors. We also made it to both Jan Juc and Inverloch Summer Series as well as the Bass District Carnival held at Inverloch. The Master boys (Dean Manns and Jim Pendergrest) made it to the Victorian Masters Championships held in Lorne in February. The Bass Disctrict Carnival saw 9 competitors make it to Inverloch on a warm summers afternoon. We had placing s from all including- Josie and Josh Chambers, Lachy Sheppard, Dan Norrie, Greg Jones and James Usher. A massive thankyou to Barb Wilson who did her officals course this season and helped throughout the season at competitions. If there is anyone who would like to help official at competitions, please let us know- the more the merrier! >Alex Pineu and Dharshini Brennen **PLEASE NOTE - unfortunately club championship results were unavailable at the time of report being produced. from the junior club captain s Another fantastic season at Cape Paterson SLSC for 2011/2012. Even with the majority of our active members under the age of 25, we were once again overwhelmed with the commitment and dedication shown and a big thank you goes out to all of our active members. As we all know, it is a huge responsibility to voluntary patrol our beach, but our thanks also go out to those behind the scenes who hold our club together. Throughout the season, we were able to provide water safety at all nipper events, Wonthaggi PS beach day, club championships, Bass Coast Distract Carnival, and the annual Aquathon (with its very trying conditions) which along with the increasing success of our competition team, shows that the commitment of our club goes above and beyond their direct responsibility of patrolling our beach. We were represented by 17 five of our members at the Bass Coast Lifesaving Development Camp who gained the leadership skills to further improve the active success of our club. Cape Paterson SLSC is continuing to grow with its increase participation in competition, patrols, and bronze camps and without the commitment put in by all members we would not be the success we are today. Thank you, >Nicholas Foon & Emily Rogers
the cape aquathon This season s Cape Aquathon was another great success for the Club and a great day for the nearly 200 participants raising nearly $6,000. The day was a beautiful day at the Cape presenting a perfect setting for the event, however the ocean swim was probably the most challenging in the 16 years of the event. All competitors rose to the challenges it presented and just put their heads down and continued. What was noticeable about this year s event was the number of clubbies competing with some great results. Brother sister team, Dane and Alex Pineau won the mixed team event and Elliot Gin came 3rd overall and won the junior male category. Elliot went on to win the Bass Coast Series (Aquathon, San Remo Challenge and Cowes Classic) in his category. Special mention must also go to veteran competitor Earlene Kontogouris who completed her 15th Aquathon to much media attention There is a lot of effort involved in running the Cape Aquathon and the quality and commitment of a team effort from The Aquathon Committee, the Cape Paterson SLSC and all the volunteers deserves recognition and praise. 21 national leadership college This year from January the 29th til February the 4th I had the privilege of attending the Surf Life Saving Australia, National Leadership College. The camp is a week long program designed to challenge and help build leaders in lifesaving. 32 participants from all over Australia and New Zealand met at St Paul s College in Sydney to live and breathe leadership, which was run by the most inspiring and dedicated facilitators, including Katie Dixon 2011 s Lifesaver of the Year. Each day of the program has a core theme which we discovered through inspirational guest speakers, intimate classroom activities and group challenges. The five themes for the week included understanding ourselves, interacting with others, the big picture, connective leadership and our leadership palette. In each theme we learnt a valuable leadership lesson that can be applied to all walks of life, not just lifesaving. As well as furiously scribbling down pages and pages of notes and ideas the camp set up challenges for us each day. These challenges were designed to test us mentally, emotionally and physically including performing in a flash mob in one of Sydney s busiest train stations during peak hour, after only learning the dance moves hours beforehand. We participated in debates, skits and talent shows with limited time to prepare, in front of Graham Ford the President of SLSA. Lastly my favourite activity, an amazing race around inner Sydney including the worst eating challenge which was first up, leaving our bellies feeling sorry for themselves whilst we jogged our way from China town, to Luna park then all the way over to the Opera house. By the end of the week the joke that sleep deprivation was a challenge in itself became less funny but with our mantra of a Can Do attitude we finished the week in style running our own formal presentation evening, hosting a myriad of lifesaving VIP s from all over Australia. The week was such an amazing experience not only due to the awesome mix of people I got to share it with but one of my favourite things about the camp was finding out how other clubs operate. Cape Paterson is quite unique in many ways in how we function as a patrol unit and 30 other clubs were fascinated to hear that we have sleep overs in our club and patrol all weekend long. Some other clubs had am and pm shifts each day and couldn t name members of another patrol. It made me realise how much I cherish our club and the great friends I have made through lifesaving but also recognise that we are part of a bigger picture and there are many new ideas I want to introduce at Cape next season. I highly recommend the National Life Saving Camp to anyone in a leadership role or looking to be a future leader. In summary I would like to share the most important messages I took home from the camp. Firstly, the most important way to inspire others is to be genuine and always stick to your own values. However, there are many styles of leadership and you need to learn how to interact with different styles in order to ensure effective communication and therefore results. Lastly, you will never achieve big things, if you don t aim big and you will never achieve anything if you don t start by making a plan. >Chelsea Bowman 19
U15 leadership camp On the 20th of April 22nd of April I had the privilege to represent CPSLSC at the U15 leadership and development camp held at Lyrebird Park Yellingbo Victoria. I went with around about 100 other young lifesavers from clubs throughout Victoria from country clubs to city clubs. On this camp it told me that to be a leader of many you first must learn to lead the few. On this camp it was a really fun and exciting way on how to become a leader in your club and how to show leadership and responsibility. In one of the challenges we had 3 lines and it was at night we were al blindfolded and were all holding the person in front of us shoulders and the objective was to make it as a team to the end of the track. But in the end one team got to the end with half their group lost and the other two kept on falling over. During this camp we had a Lesson on cyber bullying. They taught us all about bullies and how in our clubs we can have bullies. They also taught us about change and how some people might not like the change and it can be challenging. During my stay At Yellingbo I Made a lot of lifetime friends and memories and I hope that any of you that get an opportunity like this don t waste it because its life changing. :)\ >Roh Taylor 20
