The original best backstroker was Harry Hebner from the US. Between 1910 and 1917, Hebner held all world backstroke records and won seven consecutive U.S. National backstroke titles. In total, he won 35 national titles in various swimming events.

2 Ryde Carlile Committee /16 On the 4 th May 2015, the Annual General Meeting for the Ryde Carlile club was held. Mr Jim Hull (Club Patron) declared all positions vacant. Nominations for positions were called for and the following people were elected. 3 The ongoing success of our club relies on the generosity and time of the parents/carers in our club. All of our parents have skills which would be valuable on our committee. So if you have ideas about how we can make our Club better, come along to one of the monthly meetings or contact one of your Committee members. In particular, the role of Fundraising through the BBQ at Friday night races is still vacant. If you feel you have something to offer in this respect, please contact one of the Committee members your help would be most appreciated. New Life Member Sarah Maguire At the recent Ryde Carlile AGM, Sarah Maguire was nominated and approved as our newest life member of the Club. Sarah Maguire has been a member of Ryde Carlile Swimming Club for 25 years. She began her membership as a swimmer at the age of 5 and swum continuously as a club races swimmer until the age of 25, swimming club championships each year. Sarah represented the club at all competitive levels. She was the female club captain and the clubs senior swimming champion for a number of years. Post her club swimming days she became a volunteer in running club races and events and then a member of the club committee. She has been the club's Race Secretary for the last 2 years.

4 Sarah has also trained as a NSW and Australian Swimming Technical Official to the level of Referee and has been elected to the Metro North West Swimming committee in the position of Meet Director for the past 2 years and as President in These things she does in a quiet and unassuming manner and with an amazing attitude to hard work. Many in the club however know her as the supplier of cakes and goodies every Friday night at club races. Sarah is a great ambassador for Ryde Carlile and we are most proud to have her as our newest life member. Ryde Mini Meet On Sunday the 17 th May, the Ryde Mini Meet for swimmers aged 12 and under was held. This is one of the major fund raisers for the Club each year and it was an outstanding success. There was very positive feedback from officials, parents and competitors as to how the event was run which is a great endorsement of the Club.

5 In particular many (including the Committee) commented on the great job done by our senior swimmers in fulfilling a number of tasks and doing so with enthusiasm and positivity. The senior swimmers were extremely well organised by our Club Captains who did a great job in marshalling the energy. There were 71 entrants from the Club with the girls (36) just pipping the boys (35) for representation. Many of these swimmers were swimming for the first time at a major meet and we hope they will be back for more! Thank you to Idesa On Sunday 24 th May a large contingent of Ryde Carlile current and former swimmers and parents were on hand at the Bayview to thank Idesa for her years of training swimmers in the Club. The Green Room was packed to capacity as the attendees wanted to express their thanks for all the hard work Idesa has done over the years. Idesa didn t just teach the kids how to swim, she was also a friend, a confidant, a mentor and a role model. She will be missed.

6 Ashleigh and Laura spoke at the event, and their speeches are reproduced below. Ashleigh: Idesa has devoted over 20 years of her life coaching at the Ryde Carlile Swim Club, and in this time has distinguished herself through her diligence, passion, dedication and vigilant nature. She has coached many swimmers to fulfil their goals, guiding numerous swimmers to qualify at the state and national level and to great success at these events. In addition to this, many of her swimmers have achieved exceptional results throughout the school swimming program. One of the highlights of Idesa s coaching career at Ryde would be at National Age 2011, where Idesa s group of boys unexpectedly placed 2nd in the 14&Under Medley Relay. Nothing could beat the expression of excitement written all over her face. All of us swimmers will cherish the fond memories we share with Idesa. The Shelly Beach trips that Idesa organised at the end of each year were an event everyone looked forward to. Not only did it mean that we would (sadly) miss training that afternoon, it was a great opportunity for the squads to socialise together outside the training environment (despite the day ending in most of us sunburnt from head to toe). And how could we forget Idesa s dry land sessions everyone loved the bootcamp sessions in particular. These usually required us to commando crawl along the ground with our backpacks and weights strapped to us, before having to sprint around the room for what seemed like hours. It s safe to say everyone would turn up to training that afternoon barely being able to

7 lift their arms above their head. However a personal favourite was the prone holds, that at one stage lasted for up to 4 minutes Laura: Many would agree that Idesa was like a second mother to us swimmers; always pushing us to strive for the best whilst instilling values that are not only beneficial at the pool, but also in the wider world. Idesa s drive, enthusiasm and attentiveness to her swimmers success will no doubt be of great loss, however the impact of Idesa s coaching efforts at Ryde will be evident for many years to come. Idesa has been there throughout my whole swimming journey from my first water babies class when I was 6 months to competing at the Commonwealth Games, Idesa was there the whole time. I don t know how to put into words the thanks that I have for someone that has given their whole life to help me fulfil and achieve my dreams and aspirations. I saw Idesa everyday sometimes 3 times a day for the past 10 years so it is an understatement to say that we share a bond that not even this will break. Idesa has been there for all the highs and the lows and was always so much more than a coach to me and to everyone at the pool. Idesa pushes every athlete she has ever coached to extreme levels that without her we would never have achieved. She always believed in all of us and wanted us to perform the best we could. On behalf of both the past and present swimmers at the Ryde Carlile Swim Club, we wish you all the best in your future endeavours and have no doubt you'll thrive wherever your life takes you.

8 Presentation Day In an action packed month, Sunday 3 rd May was the Annual Presentation Day for Ryde Carlile. This was a jam packed event, with standing room only as a long list of swimmers received their awards for their efforts throughout the season. Current Australian swimmer Robert Hurley (ex world record holder in the 50m short course backstroke) presented a number of awards and gave an update on his career to date. Congratulations to all the swimmers.
