HEAD COACH DAN ROSS Dan Ross begins his 17th year as head coach of the Purdue men s swimming team and his 25th year of association with Boilermaker aquatics. With an all-time dual meet record of (.545), Ross has seen and implemented many improvements in the Boilermaker program. While at Purdue, Ross has built quite a reputation for both himself and the program, which continues to be on the rise as Purdue opened the Boilermaker Aquatic Center this fall. One of Ross most significant accomplishments has been to guide Purdue to the third-most Big Ten individual Big Ten titles and the third-most Big Ten top eight finishes at the NCAA Championships since Most recently, Ross coached the Old Gold and Black to a 7-3 (4-3 Big Ten) dual meet record, an eighth-place finish at the 2001 Big Ten Championships and a 25th-place finish at the 2001 NCAA Championships, while ending the season with a 23rd-place College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) national ranking. During the season, he guided Hungarian and freshman phenom Tamas Bessenyei to the Big Ten title in the 100-yard breaststroke, as well as the Purdue freshman record, the 100 breast Purdue varsity record and his first career NCAA Championships appearance. At the NCAA level, Bessenyei earned a 15th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and a 12th-place finish in the 200 breaststroke for NCAA All-America Honorable Mention honors. Ross also led senior distance freestyler Matthew Martin to top-eight finishes in the 500 free, 1,650 free and the 400 IM at the 2001 Big Ten s, as well as a 17th-place finish in the 500 free, a 6th-place finish in the 1,650 free, and a 16th-place finish in the 400 IM at the 2001 NCAA Championships. As head of a program that has continually been on the rise, both at the Big Ten level and within the NCAA, Ross most outstanding season was, perhaps, the campaign. At the 1997 Big Ten Championships, the Boilermakers claimed six Big Ten titles with five individuals and one relay taking the top spots. Matt Brown won both the 200 and 400 individual medleys, while Vilmos Kovacs collected wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Frank Smardo won the 50 freestyle and the 400 medley relay team of Gene Sutherland, Kovacs, Brown and Mike Ullom won the first relay crown in school history. The fourth-place finish tied the highest Big Ten team finish in school history, as well. The 1997 Boilermakers continued on to the NCAA Championships, where they earned a 19thplace finish, their highest since 1969, and both Kovacs and Brown earned NCAA All-America honors for their top-eight finishes. Previewing the success of the squad, Ross also coached Brown and Kovacs to their first Big Ten titles at the 1996 Big Ten Championships in the 400 IM and the 200 breast. This marked the first time that two Purdue men s swimmers captured Big Ten titles in the same year. Both Brown and Kovacs went on to qualify for the 1996 NCAA Championships, where they both earned top-eight finishes and a 27th-place team finish. During the 1998 season, Ross coached the Boilermakers to a CSCAA ranking of 23rd, a dual meet record of 12-1 (3-0 Big Ten) and a sixthplace Big Ten Championships finish, tying the school record for the most dual meet wins in a season. He also coached Kovacs to his third consecutive Big Ten title in the 200 breaststroke to make him the most decorated swimmer in Purdue history with four individual Big Ten titles and one relay title. Adding to his personal successes, Ross has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year twice for his leadership of the and squads. During his career at Purdue, Ross has coached 10 individual Big Ten champions and one relay team, 16 NCAA All-Americans and several international competitors. Among the international competitions that Ross swimmers have participated in are the Olympics and the Olympic Trials, FINA World Championships, FINA Open Water World Championships, World University Games, Southeast Asian Games, Pan American Games, Pan Pacific Games and the Maccabian Games. He has coached six Purdue swimmers to the U.S. Olympic Trials, as well as current senior Javier Diaz, who is a two-time Mexican Olympian (1996, 2000). In 1992, Brian Daly and John Klinge swam the 200 back. In 1996, Matt Brown competed in the 200 and 400 IM s. And in 2000, Matt Martin swam the 400 free, the 1,500 free and the 400 IM; junior Tad Sayce swam the 100 fly, and senior Jon Duncan swam the 100 free. Ross has also established a program known for its academic excellence. During the season, the Boilermakers finished ninth in the nation in the Div. I men s swimming and diving grade-point average rankings from CSCAA. With a 3.08 on a scale of 4.0, it was the highest team GPA in school history. The Ross Family: Andy, Sally, Matt, Dan and Eric Dan Ross continues to strive for excellence both in the pool and in the classroom as he leads the Boilermakers into the season. Ross encourages a balance between school, swimming and social activities in his swimmers lives. Because of that balance, Ross has produced three Academic All-Americans in Brian Daly (1993), Dean Fredette (1994) and Matt Brown (1997) and six honorable mention selections since his start at Purdue. He has also coached seven CSCAA Academic All-America selections and six honorable mention selections, as well as 36 Academic All-Big Ten athletes and three Big Ten Medal of Honor winners in Daly (1992), Brown (1997) and Kovacs (1999). The academic accomplishments of his teams and the constant improvement of their season records proves that he emphasizes careful time management with his student-athletes. Ross involvement with Purdue swimming and diving began in 1977, when he walked on to the swim team. He then competed in the individual medley and middle distance freestyle events. In 1980, Ross received the Most Improved Swimmer Award and was named team co-captain in After graduating, Ross continued at Purdue in a quarter-time position during the season and then served as a half-time assistant coach the next year. He was given the full-time assistant position from 1983 to 1985, and in 1985 he landed the head coaching position. In Sept. of 2001, Ross was named to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Rules Committee as the Div. I representative. As a member of the committee, he assists with the review of all rules and championship details for NCAA Swimming and Diving with his term expiring in A native of South Carolina, Ross earned a B.A. in exercise physiology in 1984 from Purdue and is married to the former Sally Johnson, also a Purdue graduate, former swimmer and 1980 twoevent Big Ten champion. Sally is also employed by Purdue, as she works in the Office of University Development as a research associate. The Rosses reside in West Lafayette and have three sons: Eric (12), Matt (10), and Andrew (6). 18

ASSISTANT COACH TIM KELLY Tim Kelly enters his fourth season at Purdue as assistant coach for the men s swim team. Besides his ondeck coaching duties, he also is responsible for recruiting. Prior to coming to Purdue, Kelly spent three years coaching at the Curl-Burke Swim Club in Damascus, Md. Additionally, he was the aquatics director and assistant manager at Sport and Health in McLean, Va., for a year and a half. As an undergraduate, he attended and swam for Southern Illinois where he was a NCAA national qualifier and co-captain. He earned his bachelors degree in exercise science in He later returned to SIU in 1992 to take the assistant coach position in charge of recruiting and earned his master s in administrative recreation. A native of Aurora, Ill., Kelly resides in West Lafayette with his wife, Abby, who also swam at SIU. The Kelly Family: Abby and Tim Tim Kelly has been the assistant men s swimming coach for four years. DIVING COACH WENBO CHEN Wenbo Chen enters his first year at the helm of the Purdue diving program. Chen comes to Purdue from Moultrie, Ga., and the Moss Farms Diving Tigers program, where he was head coach since While at Moss Farms, Chen compiled an impressive record. Among his proteges: 2001 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers, 1996 Canadian Olympians, Senior World champions and team members, Junior World champions and team members, U.S. and Canadian Senior National champions and team members, U.S. and Canadian Junior National champions and team members, Can-Am-Mex Championships medalists and team members, and U.S. Goodwill Games team members. Prior to his Moss Farms stint and his immigration to the United States in 1992, Chen began his coaching career and was one of the premier coaches of the Peoples Republic of China. From 1983 to 1991, he was the head coach of the Chinese National Team. During that time, he coached Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists, as well as Chinese National champions and gold medalists in the World Championships, the World University Games and the Asia Championships. Chen has had collegiate coaching experience as the head coach at Florida State in 1998 and as a visiting assistant coach at Illinois from 1992 to Himself a decorated diver, Chen was one of the best divers in China from 1973 to 1982 as a member of the Chinese National Team. In 1976, he was the Chinese Junior National champion on the 3-meter springboard. Then, from 1977 to 1982, he was a finalist at the Chinese National Championships on both the 3- and 10-meter platforms. A native of Beijing, Chen earned his bachelor s degree at Beijing Sports University in He currently resides in West Lafayette and is married to Wenyin Han, a former Chinese ballerina. The Chens have two daughters, Amy Yao (9) and Annie Yuan (9 months). The Chen Family: Amy, Wenbo, Wenyin and Annie 19

SEASON OUTLOOK With head coach Dan Ross at the helm for his 17th year, the Boilermakers are poised to make a big jump into their new facility. Last year was the farewell to Lambert Pool, which was home to the swimming and diving teams since The new $17.1 million Boilermaker Aquatic Center and the Doris Z. Holloway Pool has the program energized and focused for the season. The Boilermakers have waited for this opportunity and relish the chance to prove themselves. Moving into a new facility, we have much higher expectations for ourselves and our program this coming season, Dan Ross says. We are moving from probably the worst facility in Division I to one of the best and fastest. With this drastic improvement, we feel we have a strong nucleus for our swimming and diving programs to continuously rise over the next several years. The team is looking forward to building on a 25th-place finish at last year s NCAA Championships. The Boilermakers top returning swimmer likely will be sophomore two-time NCAA All-American Honorable Mention Tamas Bessenyei. Bessenyei posted the top time in the Big Ten in the 100 breast (53.78) and swam the third-fastest time in the 200 breast (1:57.95). The Boilermakers also will rely heavily on the experience and leadership of tri-captains Javier Diaz and Donovan Crowley, both seniors, and junior Gui Rego to provide the leadership for an energetic and youthful team. The Boilermakers will find it hard to replace NCAA and Academic All-American Matthew Martin. Martin set individual team records in the 500 free (4:21.37), 1,000 free (9:00.18) and 1,650 free (14:50.56) and also was a member of the 800 free relay team that set a team record. Senior Tom Drejer, along with freshmen Rion Epping and Steuart Martens, will help ease the loss of Martin. Expectations are high for the six Boilermaker seniors. This group of seniors continues to make some great strides, and they have the opportunity to do something special, Ross says. They are embracing this season as leaders and are off to a great start. That will force some of them to step out of their comfort zones and expose themselves a little. They will be the first graduating class to swim in the new facility and are the jump start in helping us reach another level. The coaching staff will also look to a talented incoming freshman class to make an immediate impact. Our incoming freshman class may be one of the strongest we have ever had here at Purdue, Ross says. This is a group of swimmers and divers that has not even scratched the surface of their abilities. I am excited about the potential that every one of them has to improve and make an immediate impact on this program, especially the divers. With the help of a newly revived diving program led by first-year coach Wenbo Chen, sophomore transfer Eric Warrick and freshman Clayton Davis, the Boilermaker divers will look to add some help on the boards. The hiring of Chen, a former diver and coach with the Chinese National Team and a mentor to champion divers on two continents, is certain to boost Purdue diving fortunes. We have scored only one point in the last nine years at the Big Tens, but that will change this year. With the addition of Wenbo Chen as the new diving coach and the facilities to train and compete, we will improve greatly on the boards, Ross says. 20

SEASON OUTLOOK Sprint Events Seniors Jon Duncan, Javier Diaz and Jeremy Wright will pace the Boilermakers in the sprint free events. Purdue will also look for help from freshman Ignatius Goh of Singapore to contribute. Look for seniors Ryan Sprengel and Donovan Crowley as well as freshmen Eric Prugh, Louis Paul and John Arzner to add depth and make some big improvements as the season progresses. Jon and Ignatius will be our front-runners in the true sprint events. Our depth in the sprint events is better, and we look for several new faces to impact the team as they continue to get stronger, says Ross. Senior Jon Duncan should be a key returner for Purdue in the sprint free, backstroke and relay events. We have added some important depth to our distance lane, Ross says. They have some big shoes to fill, but if this group likes to work hard and race, they have the tools to be good. Tom Drejer is coming off a strong summer of training, and I look for him to rebound this year and be a leader in the group. Junior Jeremy Wright will be a force in both the sprint and middle distance free events for the Boilermakers in Middle Distance Javier Diaz and Jeremy Wright will help pace the team in the middistance free events. Diaz is coming off a strong showing this summer at the FINA World Championships. Wright dropped more than three seconds off his personal best last year in the 200 free. Diaz and Wright continue to improve as their confidence grows. The Boilermakers saw great improvements last season from Kyle Jackson, Ehud Dekter, and Will Seelbach, and similar strides are expected this season. Freshmen Eric Prugh and John Arzner should help the Boilermakers remain deep in these events. According to Ross, Early on, it looks like this will be a strength for us with Wright and Diaz coming off strong seasons. Our depth keeps getting stronger, and I look for help to come from at least six other guys in the middle-distance events. Distance With the departure of All-American Matthew Martin, the Boilermakers will look for freshman Rion Epping to pace a deep distance lane. Senior Tom Drejer, freshman Steuart Martens and sophomore Garth Bringman will add support to the very strong event for the team. Drejer, who scored in the mile at Big Tens two seasons ago, will be looking to move up and give the Boilermakers a strong punch in the distance events. Bringman, a walk-on a year ago, continues to impress the coaches with his work ethic and attitude. Backstroke The backstroke corps has undergone the greatest personnel change for the Boilermakers. With the loss of two Big Ten scorers from a year ago, Purdue will look for freshman David Hughes and mid-semester addition Louis Paul to help solidify the team in these events. The team also will count on continued improvement by Kyle Jackson, Will Seelbach and Jon Duncan in the backstroke. We are young in this event, but we have some definite talent, Ross says. David already has good underwater skills and with added strength to his legs, he will only get better. Louis is a tremendous talent and will immediately impact our team at the semester from the 50 to the 200 back. We also hope to see continued improvement from a couple of freshmen (Arzner and Prugh), as well as senior Jon Duncan. Tom Drejer, in his senior year, will step up to lead the distance and middle distance crew with several freshmen aboard. 21

SEASON OUTLOOK Junior Gui Rego is a tri-captain breaststroker and a leader both in and out of the pool. Individual Medley The Boilermakers will look for big points from Javier Diaz and Tad Sayce in the 200 and 400 IM. Both scored in the 200 IM last season at the Big Tens, and both also improved in the 400 IM last season. Louis Paul has showed some recent improvement in the 200 IM that could surprise a lot of the teams in the conference. A host of others will add some much-needed depth for the Boilermakers in the IM events: Tony Ten Haagen, Tamas Bessenyei, Gui Rego, Garth Bringman and Nick Cenci. We need to get help in the IM s from everyone, Ross says. We have another eight or nine swimmers who we will look for to improve and become better all-around swimmers. The IM events are a great indicator of the versatility of a team, and in our conference that is essential to be a top-tier team. Javier and Tad have showed that versatility, but we will continue to look for others to help our team here. Breaststroke Tamas Bessenyei returns as the Big Ten champion in the 100 breaststroke for the Boilermakers and was Honorable Mention All- American at last year s NCAA s in both the 100 and the 200 breaststroke. Returning Big Ten scorers Gui Rego and Mike Miller will both look to improve on last year s consolation swims at the Big Ten meet. Additional depth will come from junior Tad Sayce and sophomore Tony Ten Haagen. Our young and talented breaststrokers and Tamas should have an immediate impact, Ross says. We have talent and depth and have all three of our scorers back. The breaststroke events were probably the most improved at the Big Ten conference meet and hopefully it will be stronger this season because of our guys returning. Butterfly The 100 fly looks to be a strength for the Boilermakers. Led by school record-holder Tad Sayce and senior Donovan Crowley, the Boilermakers will look for their experience at the Big Ten meet to help them make the move to the top tier of the conference. Look for freshman Ignatius Goh to add some depth in the sprint fly events. Sayce and Javier Diaz will look to improve the Boilermakers in the 200 fly. Both swam the 200 fly at Big Tens last season but it was the first time either had swum the event shaved in a championship meet. The Boilermakers will look for added depth from Ehud Dekter, Tamas Bessenyei, Nick Cenci and Ian Lehman. The 100 looks to be a strong event again this year, led by Tad and Donovan, Ross says. However, we need to continue to improve in the 200 like we did last year. At the beginning of last season, it looked like we had no one that could swim the event. It was probably our most improved event last season, but to compete at the Big Ten level in this event we need to make similar improvements this season. Tad Sayce will lead Purdue s attack in both the fly and IM events. Sayce returns for his junior campaign after being a 2001 Big Ten scorer. Junior Ehud Dekter comes off a strong summer in which he participated in the Maccabian Games for the Israeli National Team. He will be a key force in the fly and relay events. 22

SEASON OUTLOOK Medley Relays The Boilermakers were greatly improved a year ago in both the 200 and 400 medley relays. In the 200 medley relay, Donovan Crowley had the fastest 50 fly split last year at the Big Ten meet, and along with Tamas Bessenyei, who had the third-fastest split in the 50 breast, the Boilermakers plan to continue to improve on a school-record 1: Look for freshmen David Hughes and Louis Paul to help the team on the backstroke leg. Jeremy Wright and Jon Duncan will battle for the freestyle anchor leg. The front half for the 400 medley relay looks to be led by freshmen David Hughes and Louis Paul in the backstroke and sophomore Tamas Bessenyei. The strength of the Boilermakers depth in the fly and free legs will have several fighting for the back half relay spots. Tad Sayce and Donovan Crowley will battle for the fly leg, and Jon Duncan, Javier Diaz and Jeremy Wright will compete again this season for the freestyle anchor spot. It should be fun to watch the competition for the medley relay spots, and there should be plenty of it, Ross says. We missed making the NCAA s in the 200 medley relay by.11 seconds last season, and we feel we can all be better. To make the biggest improvement at the NCAA level as a team, you have to qualify your relays, so we need to improve here. We never put our best four relay splits together last year in the 400 medley, so we know we can and must improve there. We need to improve our Big Ten finishes in all three free relays if we want to move into the elite teams in the Big Ten race, Ross says. We feel we have the personnel to greatly improve in all relays, especially the freestyles. We still need several key people to step up and have the big breakthrough swims they are capable of, and that needs to start with our most experienced relay swimmers. If they show the confidence needed to compete at a national level, it will be contagious and filter down to the rest of the team. Diving The diving events will be the most significant program changing events this season. With the arrival of Chen and the outstanding facility upgrade, there is a strong chance for the divers to make an immediate impact at the conference level and possibly at the NCAA level. With newcomers Clayton Davis and Eric Warrick along with returnee Kevin Young, the divers will look to solidify both the one- and three-meter boards as the most improved events this season for the Boilermakers. We have a lot of work to do, but we have the talent to work with, Chen says. Clayton and Eric are strong in the platform events and have some talent. They need to improve on the springboard events and I expect that they will. There is a better chance to have an NCAA qualifier on the platform than in the springboard events. Kevin, on the other hand, is better in his springboard events and we think he can continue to improve this season. Senior Donovan Crowley will provide leadership and depth to the fly and the sprint free events during the schedule. Freestyle Relays Competition for a spot on the free relays should be tough this season. Front-runners for the 200 and 400 relays look to be seniors Jon Duncan and Javier Diaz, as well as junior Jeremy Wright. They will look to help make significant improvements in these events in order for the team to move up in the team standings at the Big Ten and NCAA levels. Look for Tad Sayce, Donovan Crowley and newcomers Louis Paul, Ignatius Goh, Eric Prugh, John Arzner and Ryan Sprengel to fight for spots on both relays. Diaz and Wright, and sophomore Kyle Jackson return from last year s school record-breaking relay in the 800 free relay. The Boilermakers will look for help from a slew of others to help improve on last year s efforts. Tad Sayce, Ehud Dekter, Will Seelbach, Eric Prugh, John Arzner, Steuart Martens and Rion Epping are among the hopefuls to fill relay spots. Senior Kevin Young will lead the Boilermakers men s diving squad as they adjust to their new facility and work hard to improve their finishes at the Big Ten level. 23
