3 PROGRAMME While we await the opening of the new aquatic facilities as part of the Centennial Centre for Wellbeing, prelims and the College swimming sports programmes will continue to operate in a modified format. Details are included in this handbook. 4 Y9 13 Athletics The Y9-13 Athletic Sports will be held on Thursday 20 th February at Mt Smart Stadium. The athletic prelims start on the first day back at school. It is necessary for us to run prelims early in the term in order to get event programmes together and allow class time to be used for teaching. Prelims times are used to determine heats and finals for the day of Athletics Sports. For 100m, 200m and 400m events, only those students who qualify from the prelims will be able to compete on Athletics Day. Y9-13 Athletics Prelims Schedule This year the prelim schedule has changed. We have running the current Year 9 and 10 prelims during PE sessions during term 4 and will run the new Year 9, 12 and 13 during the first 3 days of term 1. More information on the prelims during term one will follow through tutor teachers and . Prelims Summary It is compulsory for students in Years 9-13 to do 100m and 200m prelims as a minimum for Athletics. Only some students will qualify to compete in these events on the day of Athletics Sports. Students who trialed in term 4 will get the opportunity to retrial in term one if they feel they can make an improvement to their previous trial time/distance. Any student who did not trial in term 4 within their PE class will be expected to trial at a given time during the first week of term one. Students can gain up to 3 house points for each prelim race. House points are based on preset standards for running speed. The 400m prelim event is optional. Competitive students will be timed at prelims to qualify for this event. Other students may complete the 400m to gain further house points (1 house point). Athletic Events Summary Students wanting to contest the championship may compete in a maximum of 5 Championship Events. Javelin does count as a Championship Event but is held at the College on a different day to the Athletics Sports. Students must sign up for their Athletics events when prompted. Families will be sent an entry form to complete by Friday 7 th February. Event choices are:100m, 200m, 400m 800m, 1500m, 3000m, Hurdles, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump. Students must also indicate if they wish to qualify for the 100m, 200m and 400m event. Up to 3 house points can be gained for each Athletic event. Points are based on preset standards of performance. Please see the table below for all preset standards. There are other fun events that students may enter on Athletics Day. 6 Y9-13 Swimming Sports The Y9-13 Swimming Sports will be held at Sacred Heart College on Monday 17 th February. This event is for competitive swimmers only with all races contributing to Individual Championship points. All swimmers will be transported by bus from St Cuthbert s College, unless prior arrangements are given to the sports department. As there are no swimming prelims held prior to the day, heats will be held in the morning and finals in the afternoon. Procedure for Entries In order to have a transparent system for the College Swimming Championships, the following procedures are in place: 1. Students must enter a minimum of 2 events and a maximum of 5 events, which will count toward Individual Championship points. 2. Competitors must complete an event entry form and return this to the Sports Department, no later than Friday 7 th February. To assist with programming, students will indicate their level of competence on the entry form. 3. Students will not be permitted to change their entries after this date. 4. The event order for Heats is shown in brackets. 5. Heats for longer distances will only be held if more than eight students per age group enter them. Event entry forms will be sent to all families during term 4. They will also be available on MPower for all year groups. New families to the school will receive their entry form during the school holidays. Entry deadline for all students will be Friday 7 th February. 7 AGE GROUPS Students will compete in the following age groups: Year 9-13 are split into three age groups in line with Auckland Secondary School Age Groups. Junior: Under 14* Intermediate: Under 16* Senior: Under 18* *All age groups are taken from 1 January EQUIPMENT Note that events do not take place on College grounds. Students are reminded to bring the appropriate equipment for their events: Swimming: Either a Swimsuit, Cap and Towel. The swimsuit can be either the St Cuthbert s swimsuit, or a personal (one piece of single colour) swimsuit. Note, racing togs are NOT allowed. St Cuthbert s swimming togs or race suits must be worn at Central East and Auckland events. Swimmers are encouraged to wear a swim cap in their house colour or the College cap. You will also need to bring plenty of food, a full water bottle and spare clothes and towels for between races. Athletic Prelims: PE shorts, PE shirt, sports shoes, hat, sunscreen, and a full water bottle (there are no taps nearby). As Y12-13 students do not participate in PE, they may compete in alternative sports clothing (i.e. black shorts, house coloured T-shirts with no slogans). Please note that a swim short is available through Blackwatch House uniform shop. The optional swim short is only for students in Y9-13 and must be worn over the swimsuit. It may also be worn by Y9-13 for physical education lessons. QUALIFYING FOR FINALS For both swimming and athletics, students will be placed into finals according to their time rather their placing in an individual heat i.e. they might come first in a heat but have a slow time and therefore not end up in a race group. INTERSCHOOL ZONE EVENTS Teams of students from Y9-13 will be selected to compete at interschool zone events in both swimming and athletics. The best performing students in events held at Zone Championships will be selected, up to the maximum number of entries allowed per school. Students will be selected to attend the Central East Swimming meet and through qualification at this event the Auckland Champ of Champs. St Cuthbert s College Prelim Handbook 2013 Page 7

8 A performance level guide for Year 7-13 Swimming Sports Over 2012 to 2014 while we await the construction of the new pools as part of the Centennial Centre, the College Swimming Sports will be run offsite in a modified format. We are no longer able to hold prelims prior to the College swimming sports. Our policy is to continue to encourage students to participate, rather than turn the swimming sports into a purely elitist affair. However, there is some limitation to the number of students that we can take to the swimming sports and still complete the prelims and finals on the same day. Therefore, for Years 9-13, only swimmers will attend the College swimming sports and a normal day will operate back at the College. On the entry form, you have been asked to indicate measures of competence. This will help us to create a programme where, as much as possible, students of similar ability are in the same heats and make time for heats and finals in the same day. Personal Best (PB) times are helpful to us, but not essential. A guide is given below indicating swim times that students should be able to accomplish if they are a strong swimmer. In addition, the top three 2011 results for each event are also given. This information is given to assist parents and students to determine their level of competence, or for students in Y9-13, to determine whether their they should enter the swimming sports. As a minimum, students in Year 9-13 should be able to swim 50 metres without the need to stop or be assisted. 11 BASIC RULES FOR SWIMMING Students doing the incorrect stroke technique will not qualify for the championship finals. Discretion will be applied to the two handed touch rule for breast stroke and butterfly as this can be easily corrected prior to finals. To avoid disappointment due to disqualification, it would be good to go over the rules with your daughter, especially if she is an able swimmer. Backstroke If doing a tumble turn a swimmer must push off on their back. If touching and turning swimmers must touch on their back and push off on their back. All swimmers must finish on their backs. Breaststroke Must kick with outside of the sole of the foot with toes turned out. Legs must have a simultaneous motion. Arms must have a simultaneous motion. No freestyle or butterfly arms are permitted. No freestyle or butterfly kick is permitted. Each length must be finished with a two handed simultaneous touch. Butterfly Arms must have a simultaneous motion. No breaststroke or freestyle kick is permitted. Each length must be finished with a two handed simultaneous touch. Freestyle Swimmers must not put their feet on the bottom of the pool. Missing the wall on the turn can result in a disqualification/ race change. Individual Medley The order of strokes is butterfly, backstroke, breast stroke then freestyle. All of the above rules apply to individual strokes. Butterfly to backstroke turn = Two handed touch, push off on back. Backstroke to breaststroke turn = Touch on back push off on front. Breast stroke to freestyle = Two handed touch push off on front. 12 GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS Parents, grandparents and coaches are very welcome to attend Sports days. The students will sit in the designated spaces inside the pool area and we do ask that parents remain in their designated area. Seating and space is very limited at Sacred Heart College Pool. Please consider your time of arrival in line with your daughters races. Parents are welcome to assist as timekeepers at the Sports Days and are invited to contact the Sports Office to offer their help. To ensure transparency, parents will not time their own daughter s lanes. In addition, three time keepers are placed on each lane with the median result counting as the recorded time. Parents who are qualified and experienced officials are welcomed to assist in officiating at College events. Please phone the Sports Office on if you are able to help.
