Problem Identification Exercise in Space

The 12 Greatest Challenges for Space Exploration To prevent bone density loss, Astronauts exercise 2+ hours every day. They use special space exercise equipment. They run on treadmills, ride stationary bikes, and even lift weights. It is hard, repetitive work. We said to ourselves, if swimming is the best form of exercise on earth, how could we bring swimming to space? We looked at many challenges with living in space for long periods of time and decided to focus on astronaut health and the need for exercise. Every month in space a human loses 1-2% bone density

Why not enough exercise is bad

Body Changes in Microgravity Life in the microgravity environment of space brings many changes to the human body. The loss of bone and muscle mass, change in cardiac performance, variation in behavior, and body-wide alterations initiated by a changing nervous system are some of the most apparent and potentially detrimental effects of microgravity. Changes to bone are particularly noticeable because they affect an astronaut's ability to move and walk upon return to Earth's gravity.

Amount of Exercise Needed Per Day Astronauts participating in space shuttle missions, which are usually two weeks long, exercise for approximately 30 minutes per day. Astronauts who live on the ISS for much longer periods of time are required to exercise for approximately two hours per day. Each astronaut s exercise routine is monitored, and can be adjusted if necessary based on his or her monthly fitness assessment. This will be true for long term space travel as well.

Three Field Trips Blue Origin We received a guided tour of the Seattle Offices of Blue Origin Blue Origin is a company owned by Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com) They are building technology for a private company to take humans into space We were not allowed to take pictures inside the facility The Museum of Flight Charles Simony Space Gallery Interacted with real space equipment and learned more about living in space. Underwater Sports Talked to SCUBA experts

Problem Analysis, Existing Solutions Treadmill with Vibration Isolation and Stabilization System (TVIS) ation/research/experiments/976.html ~$20,000 for 1 KG of cargo into space Breathing under water with Scuba or Snuba Endless pool technologies, tethered swimming, and keeping the pool water clean

Team Solution Fully sealed and contained swimming chamber using Endless Pool technology to create resistance Ability to weight train in the pool using Styrofoam dumbbells and other accessories for a total body work out.

Our problem is not enough exercise in space. The astronauts can use the treadmill in space, but have you ever thought of a swimming pool? It's impossible you may say but this storm-like team is making this happen. The reason we are doing this is because we want people in space to feel at home with exercise. In the picture below you'll see that for astronauts swimming is a game. We verified that this was on earth and not in space. They may like it on the ground but they'd really love it if it was in space. Benefits of swimming It's a total-body workout It's joint-friendly It's a great way to burn calories It's refreshing

Innovation

The Endless Space Pool FEATURES The Endless Space Pool itself will be 3m long by 1.2m tall by 1.5 meters wide and fully enclosed. With an endless pool, a current of water is produced and the swimmer swims against that current, staying in place within the pool itself. The current creates resistance. The pool uses water current for resistance just like an endless pool on earth. It's completely filled with water and is enclosed to make sure the water doesn t float away! Temperature regulation keeps the water at the perfect temperature. The Filter and PH Regulator keep the water clean and clear with the correct chemical balance. One side is a window to outer space so the swimmer does not feel claustrophobic.

How it works We start with an empty pool. The water is waiting in a reservoir. There is a double door system, like when you visit the butterfly exhibit at the Seattle Science Center. The astronaut opens the outer door and enters through a tube, then closes the outer door. Then the swimming chamber is entered and the astronaut closes the airtight/watertight inner door. The water from the reservoir is pumped into the pool, going through a filter and a PH Regulator until the pool is completely full. There is also a temperature regulator so the water temperature will be very comfortable. A current is produced and water is circulated, creating a current. The astronaut swims against the current and get wonderful exercise that benefits their entire body. They wear a mask that has a hose connected to an oxygen supply. This is called a hooka. When the astronaut is done swimming, he/she pushes a button and the water is diverted to the reservoir. When most of the water is gone, the astronaut opens the inner door and enters the tube. Here, the Everywhere Blow Dryer (which is a bunch of fans) will blow the water off of you and back into the pool area. Once dry, the astronaut changes in the tube and puts on dry clothes from a watertight locker, putting the swimwear into a device that will wring all of the water off and dry the swimwear. Then the astronaut opens the outer door and exits. A robot will clean the pool so bacteria won't grow on the pool walls, like they have in hotels.

Water Aerobics Training Work those Muscles! The resistance in water makes a great work out for your muscles and bones, whether on land or in space. When we turn off the current, the Endless Space Pool becomes the perfect place to get in a water and give other muscles groups a work out! The foam weights are heavy under water due to the natural resistance of the water. Ability to isolate a variety of muscle groups all over the body Better muscle tone A more hardcore workout Foam Barbell Foam Dumbbells Wrist and Ankle Weights Aqua Runners

Other Considerations Exercising can cause damage to the space station by vibrations. We will build our system so that it has vibration isolation technologies Consultation with a building engineer John Campbell gave us the idea to use bungy tethers to hold the pool in place so the vibrations do not transfer to the rest of the ship. Future Versions To make swimming even more fun, we will make a round track with a current so astronauts can swim together and even challenge each other to races. Envision a lazy river in zero gravity, but the astronauts swim against the current for exercise, and can flow with the current for relaxation. The oxygen tank and air hose will move with them around the pool.

NASA $20,000 per KG of Cargo 1 Liter = ~1KG 12,000 Liter * $20,000 = $240,000,000 just to get the water into space SpaceX $1064 per pound of Cargo 1 Liter = ~2.2 lbs 12,000 Liter * 2.2 lbs * $1064 = $28,089,600 just to get the water into space

Sharing

Sharing at Underwater Sports Swimming in zero gravity is a lot like scuba diving, in that you have to make sure you can breathe under water. We visited a dive shop and talked to them about our project. They were very excited about the idea, and had even brainstormed ideas before we got there!

Sharing Sharing with Engineers at Blue Origin James Caldwell and Co-Workers NASA Astronaut Trainer Author Ken s Moon Lecturer on space phenomena

Sharing - Personal Fitness Trainer & Building Engineer Personal Fitness Training Darla Campbell thought our innovation would be very beneficial to astronauts! She also saw a potential for even better benefits that the ones we had already thought of. We learned that if we turned off the current and gave the astronauts Styrofoam dumbbells and other accessories, they could work targeted muscles groups in the arms, upper body, abs, and even legs! Building Engineer John Campbell gave us ideas on how to stabilize the pool to minimize vibrations to the ISS or space ship. He recommended using bungy tethers to hold the pool in place. The bungy tethers would absorb the energy so it doesn t transfer to the ship.

Sharing The Sonic Storm hosted a scrimmage. We were able to share our innovation with other teams. They also shared their innovative solutions and we learned about their innovations. We gave and received a lot of feedback.

Sharing Our school had an Open House for perspective new families. Our team shared about: FIRST LEGO League Core Values Endless Space Pool Our robot and attachments We talked to many perspective parents and students, as well as faculty.

Survey 64% of respondents work in a field that involved space 93% would be interested in swimming in space if they were an astronaut 92% would enjoy pool related activities 86% would prefer a full facemask with comms instead of an oxygen tank worn on their back with a regulator
