There are 8 pool meets, one fitness event and one open water event planned for the annual season that runs from October 1, 2016 to September 30, 2017, in addition to USMS events and epostals. All events are listed on the Wisconsin website, and all events, except the Water Warriors Fitness Challenge, will use on-line entries via Club Assistant. Links to on-line entries are on the Wisconsin website. Meet information for the January 8th (Pabst Farms Y), January 29 th (Oshkosh Y) and February 11th (Sun Prairie HS) pool events are in the content of this Newsletter and are available to enter on-line. It s time now to register with U.S. Masters Swimming for The registration drive for 2017 began on November 1st, As of this writing, 238 Wisconsin swimmers have completed the 2017 USMS Registration. There are several discounts with USMS partner vendors that are offered to swimmers who complete the 2017 registration by Dec 31, There will be a meeting held on Sunday, Dec 11 th, that is the continuation of the LMSC Annual Meeting. This continuation is to address several items of business that we couldn t complete at the October meeting. The meeting will be held beginning at 11:30 at the YMCA at Pabst Farms in Oconomowoc. If you plan to attend, please to wichair@usms.org so I can plan snacks. Finally, the final 2016 USMS Top Ten for Long Course Meters is now posted on the USMS website. See for a page that links to the Wisconsin Top Ten achievements by year for both Individual Events and Relay Events. Congratulations to the long course USMS All-American swimmers who placed first in an event in the USMS Top Ten. Swimmers are Charlie Lorenz (M40-44, 100 and 200 freestyles), Alex MacGillis (M85-89, 100 BR-stroke) and Melinda Mann (W60-64, 100 butterfly). Thirty-three individual swims placed in the Top 10 along with 7 relays. Beginning with the next publication of the newsletter, James Biles will be the new Wisconsin LMSC Chair. 2 2016 Wisconsin Water Warriors Melodee Nugent Just a reminder that the event is currently taking place until the end of December. I have received a few entries so far, hoping more can take on the WWW challenge and swim more than normal. It is the perfect time of year to work a little harder, so you can enjoy more of the holiday treats! Also, when I receive an entry by , I do send out a confirmation that I received it. West Bend SCM Meet Dec 3 Wisconsin Masters held its SCM meet at West Bend on Dec 3, with 111 swimmers in attendance, including a few new faces competing for the very first time. The meet was well run, and a good time to meet new and old friends. A number of relays were contested, and many of the teams were looking to set new state relay records. All relay distances were available to swim, so this was a good opportunity to make a mark on the record books. There were 40 individual records broken, and 10 relay records. The records spanned all age groups. The records were split evenly between men and women, with men breaking 19 records, and women breaking 21. It was the same with relays, with 3 Women s relays breaking records, 5 Men, and 2 Mixed. It was a good day for many people, and even those that didn t break records had good swims, and got started on a new season of competition. Think about adding this meet to your agenda for next year. 3 Sun Prairie Swim Meet in February by Steve Justinger There is a change of venue for the Madison area swim meet in February, It will be sponsored by the Madison Area Masters at the Sun Prairie High School Pool on Sunday, February 19, The Sun Prairie High School Pool has a state-of-theart scoreboard, electronic timing system, plenty of deck and bleacher space, and premium starting blocks. There are 8 lanes to the 25 yard pool, which are 7 feet wide. The pool depth is 3' 6" at the shallow end and 12' 4" at the deep end. Instead of using a traditional pool sanitation method, such as direct liquid chlorine injection, the pool uses a Salt Water Chlorination System. the pool also uses a state-of- the-art ultraviolet disinfectant system. 5 Three Rivers Marathon Alumni Relay by Melodee Nugent I had the fortune to swim again in the Three Rivers (Ohio, Monongahela and Allegheny) in Pittsburgh on September 24 th, I had done this as a 30K (18.6 mile) solo swim in 2014 and was invited back to join in on a relay team to test the course for this new event before the registration opens on March 1 st, I jumped at the chance to see a few of my swimming friends from the east coast. Pittsburgh is a beautiful city and our race director, Darren Miller, really loves his hometown. Our team of 5 included: Anthony McCarley (PA), Kimberly Plewa (NJ), Janet Kylander Manning (MD), Tim Bachman (PA) and myself. My husband Mike had the chance to be involved as the official observer of the event. His job was to keep accurate times, record the water/air temp and record anything unusual. The only other person on the boat (called the Catfish Hunter ) was Darren. We swam in 30-minute legs for a total of 9 hours and 8 minutes (I did it solo in 9 hours and 15 minutes). We also had two kayak escorts for the entire swim, Nikki Navarro (PA) and Jan Burton (MD), they did a great job (and Jan didn t get out once for a bathroom break)! We offered advice/suggestions to Darren on how the real event should be run (logistics) next year for the charity event called the Forever Fund. We also avoided a large barge in the Ohio River, a few Ducky Tour Boats on the Monongahela and the heavier boat traffic on the Allegheny (Washington s Landing, PNC Park and Heinz Field). Prior to the day of the swim, the forecast was a sunny 70 degree day. However, we started with overcast skies and temperatures in the upper 60s for the first 20K. Then the sun finally came out and warmed us up for the last 10K. A few wind gusts came in up to mph while the water temperature averaged in the mid-upper 70's, which was perfect. Preliminary results show two more national championship wins for Wisconsin. Final results won t officially be out until mid-december. The 2017 USMS long distance season begins January 1 st with the One Hour epostal. This event now will run for the two entire months of January and February. This will give everyone plenty of time to train and swim the event. You don t have to be an accomplished swimmer to participate. All you need to do is swim for one hour (yes, you can rest on walls but no getting out of pool) and then register online at USMS.org. Be sure to go online first to read and follow the rules. See the full 2017 championship schedule below. Remember the new rule for open water and epostal age determination: The age for all USMS sanctioned open water and postal swims will be based on the age of the swimmer as of December 31 st of the year of the competition. This means no more double dipping in postals when you age up during the timespan of the event. Unfinished business will be presented, along with a discussion of the LMSC Standards to which the LMSC must adhere. Any WMAC member is welcome to attend the meeting and participate in the discussion. USMS Membership Renewal for 2017 USMS membership renewal for 2017 began on November 1, 2016, and the fee for Wisconsin swimmers is $54.
