2 THANK YOU FOR PURCHASING THE POOLGEM T he PoolGem is the first solar powered water testing device in the UK. It is manufactured by Aqua Analysing Sensors who specialise in innovative water monitoring devices. The PoolGem takes the hassle out of testing your pool water on a regular basis. It continuously monitors ORP (oxidation reduction potential), chlorine, ph and temperature levels and displays the results on a simple-to-use 4.3 colour LCD touch screen. The receiver has an alarm system in place which will alert you when the chlorine or ph levels go out of range. The unit will also tell you what chlorine treatments to add when the chlorine level is too low. It allows you to continually log and display pool data from the previous 5 days. It is a very low maintenance instrument. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Please read before going any further. This product contains the most advanced low-power wireless communication module available. It also contains the world s first solar-assisted powered testing system, which will continuously recharge the batteries, therefore eliminating the need to replace batteries (except in rare circumstances). With this in mind it is important that you read this instruction booklet before setting up and using the product. Failure to adhere to this instruction booklet could affect your warranty. PLEASE DO NOT immerse it in water. The instrument is designed to float in your swimming pool. All seals are water resistant but are not designed to be exposed to continual immersion. Remove the floating unit from the pool if there is a large number of bathers in the pool. Handle the probe with extreme care (see probe hints and tips for more details). The receiver should only be stored INDOORS. The receiver should only be used with the AC/DC adaptor supplied with the product. DO NOT touch the receiver with wet hands, as this may result in an electric shock. DO NOT attempt to dismantle any part of the floating unit or receiver. 2

3 INSTALLATION Please ensure that the following components are present: Floating unit with an o-ring attached on the bottom of the blue lower part (VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE O-RING IS ATTACHED). Probe (black plastic moulded unit). Probe cover with attached screws. Receiver. Receiver power unit. Screwdriver. Instructions. Carefully inspect the diagram before constructing the unit. WARNING: THE PROBE ENDS (BULBS) ARE FRAGILE SO REQUIRE HANDLING WITH CARE. AVOID TOUCHING THE BULBS (see PROBE HINTS AND TIPS for more information). 3

INSTALLATION Insert the probe connector (located at the top of the probe) into the probe socket (3), ensuring that the pins on the plug are lined up with the holes on the socket.

4 INSTALLATION Insert the probe connector (located at the top of the probe) into the probe socket (3), ensuring that the pins on the plug are lined up with the holes on the socket. Gently push up and screw clockwise until finger tight (do not over tighten). Carefully remove the protective cap (4) from the probe. Store this protective cap in a safe place as it may be needed again. Fit the probe cover (5) over the probe and gently rotate the cover clockwise until it is flush with the o-ring. Screw the probe cover tightly into place with the enclosed screwdriver using the attached screws (6). The PoolGem can now be placed in the pool and be left to float around. DO NOT PLACE THE FLOATING UNIT IN THE WATER WITHOUT THE PROBE ATTACHED. THIS WILL CAUSE WATER INGRESS INTO THE UNIT AND WILL INVALIDATE THE WARRANTY. SETTING UP AND USING THE RECEIVER Location of the receiver The receiver should be located in the house or suitable out building, ideally in direct sight of the pool. For best results the distance between the monitoring unit and the receiver should be not more than 50m. However, this is only a guideline and obstructions in the line of sight between the monitoring unit and the receiver (e.g. walls) will reduce the required transmission distance between the two units. Ensure that the floating unit does not float into a dead zone where the transmission to the receiver will be blocked. 4

Within about 15 minutes of the receiver powering up it should have linked up with the floating unit. SETTING UP THE RECEIVER When the receiver is powered up four boxes will appear. ORP Chlorine ph Temperature If the receiver has successfully linked up with the floating unit and is transmitting data then data will be displayed in each of the four boxes plus pool temperature. Readings will be updated about every 15 minutes. If the receiver has not successfully linked up with the floating unit then no data will be displayed. If this is the case wait a few minutes. If data is still not present see the Troubleshooting section. We will return to this data display screen later on in this manual. At anytime press Back to return to the settings screen. Date - Using the and buttons set the date and press Save. Unit Choose between metric and imperial and press Save. (Note: Metric relates to o C and litres. Imperial relates to o F and gallons) Dosage - This allows you to specify the type of chlorine you are using on your pool. This will then be used for future dosing information. Choose between the different chemicals available and then press Save. If you are unsure please consult the information supplied with the sanitiser or your pool chemical supplier or distributor. Volume - This allows you to the select the volume of your pool. If metric units have been selected ensure that volume is added in litres. If imperial units have been selected ensure that volume is added in gallons. Use the and buttons to choose the correct pool volume and then press Save. Limits - This allows the limits for chlorine and ph to be selected depending on the recommended ph and chlorine levels. (Note: The thresholds are factory pre-set for standard swimming pool conditions ( for ph and 1-5 ppm for chlorine), but can be changed if desired). Use the and buttons to set your limits and then press Save. 6

7 HANDLING POOL DATA The home screen will display the data for chlorine, ph, temperature and ORP. This data will be updated every 15 minutes. Should the chlorine or ph parameters breach the limits set during installation the relevant box will go red and an alarm will sound intermittently. This signals that attention is needed. For further information you need to click on the respective red box. ph If the ph level falls out of range then please use ph increaser or ph decreaser to bring it within range. Please follow the instructions on the product for more details on dosing. Chlorine The default limits are set to 1ppm and 5ppm for chlorine however ideally the chlorine level should be kept between 1ppm and 3ppm. If the chlorine level drops below 1ppm an alarm will sound and a Press for dosage box will appear. Touch this box and follow the on screen dosing instructions (these instructions have been tailored towards your pool based on the chemical you selected during the setup stage). After you have dosed the pool press Done and then OK. The alarm will stop and a dose added message will appear on the home screen. PLEASE NOTE: THIS SHOULD ONLY BE USED AS A GUIDE FOR DOSING THE POOL. PLEASE REFER TO PRODUCT INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCURATE DOSING AMOUNTS. This will appear for 1 hour, after which it will disappear, and no further message will appear on the pool data screen. Allow a couple of hours for the pool readings to fully stabilise after the additional chlorine has been added. If the chlorine level exceeds 5ppm an alarm will sound. At this point you should STOP DOSING ANY CHLORINE INTO THE POOL and allow the level to drop back down to 3ppm. If you are using trichlorisocyanuric acid tablet(s) in a floating dispenser take it out of the pool and put it into a plastic bucket. If you are using a trichloroisocyanuric acid tablet in a skimmer basket then carefully remove this from the skimmer and place it in a bucket out of reach of any children. If you are using sodium hypochlorite or stabilised chlorine granules then do not add any more to the pool. 7

8 HANDLING POOL DATA If the chlorine level is between 3ppm and 5ppm then no immediate action is required. However it is advisable that you reduce the amount of chlorine you are adding to the pool to prevent the level rising above 5ppm. Graphs To view data (ph, chlorine, temperature and ORP) in graph form, press one of the data boxes. Graph data will be updated constantly. Data within the set limits will appear as a blue line. Data outside the set limits will appear as a red line. To return to the home screen, press anywhere on the screen. If the screen is left unattended for about 20 seconds it will time out and return to the home screen automatically. PROBE DOS AND DON TS DO ensure that the probe ends (bulbs) are kept damp AT ALL TIMES even if it is out of the pool. Accuracy might be compromised if the bulbs are allowed to dry out. When the floating unit is removed from the water for any length of time, place into a bucket of water to keep the probe wet. DO ensure that if removed from the pool for any length of time the protective cap is returned to the end of the probe. Ensure that the sponge contained within the protective cap is damp, before fitting the probe. If not add some pool water. DO be gentle with the probes as they are made of glass and can easily break. DO store the probes upright when not in use. DO rinse the probe bulbs gently with water after removing the protective cap for the first time to ensure all solution has been removed. DO NOT immerse the probe in highly acidic or basic chemicals. DO NOT touch or scratch the bulbs. This might affect the performance. DO NOT expose the probes to extreme temperatures. DO NOT immerse the probes in distilled or deionised water for a prolonged time. DO NOT stop measuring other chemical parameters like cyanuric acid and alkalinity. 8

9 CLEANING PROBES From time to time the sensors are likely to need cleaning to ensure continuing accurate readings and increased life span of the probe. Sensors get contaminated when materials in water, build on the surfaces of the probes as an invisible thin film. A number of components are responsible for this contamination, including body oils, suntan lotions, urine, perspiration, cyanuric acid, organics and minerals. The degree and frequency in which contamination occur will vary between pools and will depend on a number of factors including bathing load (the extent to which the pool is used) and the concentration of cyanuric acid and other organics. If the ORP response is low or the response becomes very slow then the sensor will probably require cleaning. If the ph readings are abnormally high or low than the sensor will probably require cleaning To clean the sensor, remove the probe from the water and unscrew it from the floating unit. Using a very soft brush and a mild detergent (such as hand soap) VERY gently brush the electrode of the ORP sensor and the ph bulb (be VERY CAREFUL with the ph bulb as it will break with excessive cleaning). Finally rinse the bulbs with water and replace onto the floating unit. Add back into the pool and allow readings to stabilise. PLEASE ENSURE THAT PROBES ARE HANDLED WITH EXTREME CARE REPLACING PROBES Each probe will have a lifespan of approximately a year. Signs that a probe that needs replacing are inaccurate and slow response readings (even after cleaning) and readings that fluctuate widely. Probes will also need to be replaced if the glass bulbs are broken. New probes can be purchased from When the probe needs to be replaced follow the following instructions: Unscrew the screws from the probe cover and gently rotate anticlockwise until it is free. Unscrew the probe anticlockwise and pull gently to release. Replace with a new probe. Replace the probe cover and screw in 9

10 TROUBLESHOOTING Problem: No data is shown on the receiver, or the readings are not updating. Solution: The receiver is probably not communicating with the floating unit. This could be due to the receiver and floating unit being too far apart. You should bring the receiver and floating unit close to each other. If the problem still persists than the batteries could be low. Place the unit in a bright and sunny location and wait for a few hours to recharge. If the problem still persists contact Problem: The sensors are providing widely inaccurate readings. Solution: It could be that the probes are old and need replacing. If the probes are new, contact www. swimmingpoolchemicals.co.uk. Problem: The ph is normal, but the chlorine levels are lower than expected. Solution: This could be due to high levels of cyanuric acid in the pool. Check cyanuric acid levels, and if required reduce by draining the pool. UNDERSTANDING THE INDIVIDUAL SENSORS The probe combines three different sensors, which measure ph, oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and temperature respectively. A microprocessor contained within the probe body processes all the signals from the individual sensors. ORP The ORP measures the sanitising capability of the water and gives readings in millivolts (mv). The built-in software in the microprocessor will convert the ORP measurement into free chlorine (FC) reading in parts-per-million (ppm). There are some important points to remember about these readings, which the user needs to fully understand to get the most out the instrument: The Free Chlorine value may vary from readings obtained from other chlorine tests, such as the DPD test. This is because two techniques are very different and some non-chlorine species within the pool will affect ORP sensor measurements and thus alter the chlorine reading. High levels of cyanuric acid (over 100ppm) will have a highly detrimental effect on performance of the ORP sensor. This will result in Free Chlorine readings being much LOWER than what would be expected and will also result in very slow and sluggish response times. The accuracy of the Free Chlorine reading may decrease if the pool ph is outside the normal ph range (~ ph 7-8). High (~ 40 C) or low (~ 20 C) temperatures could impair the accuracy of the readings Sensor response time and accuracy may decrease with increasing probe age. 10

11 UNDERSTANDING THE INDIVIDUAL SENSORS ph The ph provides information of the acidic or basic nature of the pool water on a logarithmic scales from Some important points to remember about the ph sensor are as follows: Response time is much faster than that for ORP; the final reading will be reached within a minute or so. The ph reading is temperature compensated for the temperature range of 25 C~35 C. Outside this range and/or in extremes of ph (i.e. ~ 6.5 and ~ 8.5) compensation ability will be lost. Temperature Pool temperature is measured by the use of a thermistor wire. A set of algorithms programmed into the microprocessor converts resistance readings from the thermistor to temperature. Some important points to remember about this sensor are as follows: The sensor will provide accurate readings up to C. Much above this range accuracy is diminished. Response of the sensor to sudden changes in temperature is quite slow, so time should be allowed for the readings to stabilise. Sensor accuracy and precession might decrease with increasing age of the probe as the bulb becomes contaminated. APPROVALS AND CERTIFICATION FCC Approvals The product contains transmitter module FCC ID: S4GEM35XA which complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. WARNING: To satisfy FCC, RF exposure requirements for mobile transmitting devices, a separation distance of 20cm or more should be maintained between the antenna of this device and persons during operation. To ensure compliance, operations at closer distances than this are not recommended.
