3 It can be complicated deciding which pool is best for your family. Many questions revolve around saltwater pool products or chlorine free pools. Saltwater pools are NOT chlorine free pools. A salt water pool Is simply one that utilises a chlorine generator. Chlorine generators have been around for decades. As technology and materials continue to evolve, Chlorine generators continue to improve in performance. Salt water pools used to be the exception, but now they are becoming a widely accepted method of water treatment in swimming pools. A lot of builders are now making Salt water systems standard on their new pools. Why use saltwater pools? The most important fact is that you save the chemicals you have to add normally. Generally, when people swim in a non-chlorine generator pool (a pool with no salt water in it) they feel like their skin dries quicker upon exiting the pool. They may feel and /or see whitish residual, chlorine flaking, on the skin. In a saltwater pool (one with a chlorine generator) the water feels smooth, your skin feels smooth and many people feel more refreshed. Swimming in a mild saline solution is much like taking a shower in soft water. Saltwater pools are often more relaxing than their chlorinated counterpart. Ocean water has a salt content of around 35,000 parts per million ("ppm"). The Watermaid chlorine generator requires a salt content of between ppm in the pool to operate effectively. What's the difference between a saltwater pool and a pool maintained with chlorine? Controlled Stabiliser Levels If you are using chlorine tablets, you are adding 1 lb. of stabiliser for every 2 lbs. of tablets you put into your pool. Your stabiliser level rises to over 100 ppm and your chlorine becomes ineffective and yellow algae and poor sanitisation results. With a salt system, you add stabiliser as needed and are able to keep the level low. Your chlorine remains VERY effective and you need much less in the water to do the job (see above). On commercial pools in the USA, state code requires you to drain pools when the stabiliser level exceeds 100 ppm. The salt system avoids this problem. From the chart left, it can be seen that as the ph rises, a common problem with most pools, chlorine becomes almost totally ineffective. When the ph is 8.0 chlorine is only 22% effective and at 8.5 only 8% effective. Factors Affecting the Longevity of Oxidizers (Sanitisers): Bathing load : The greater the number of swimmers who use your pool, the more disinfectant you will need. Sunlight : The greater the sun s intensity, the faster the dissipation of the oxidizer residual. The loss of chlorine caused by sunlight can be minimised by stabilizing the pool water with cyanuric acid or by using a chlorinated cyanuric chemical on a daily basis. Water Temperature : The warmer the pool s water, the shorter the life of most chemicals used as oxidizer. This process is greatly accelerated when water temperature exceeds 85 degrees. Wind and rain : These elements carry dust, bacteria, algae spores and other debris into the pool, thus overworking chemical oxidizer and reducing their power to sanitize. This effect is increased when there are many shrubs and trees near the pool. ph balance : As the ph of the pool rises, oxidizer action slows down. More oxidizer must then be added to maintain proper sanitization. The ideal ph range is between 7.2 and 7.6. Total Alkalinity : If total alkalinity is low (below 80), the ph of the pool water may fluctuate widely. If the alkalinity is too high (above 140 ppm), it will tend to maintain ph at a higher level, thereby slowing the activity of the oxidizer.
