Page 3 of Selection and Team Preparation The Fiji Swimming Association (FSA) selected a four member swimming team and two reserves ranging in ages 13 to 16 to represent Fiji at the 13 th World Championships in Rome. The Team Manager and Coach were confirmed through on 10 th June, The selectors report for the Swimmers was issued to FSA on 28 th May, 2009 and the selection was confirmed at the Fiji Swimming meeting on 11 th June, FINA advised FSA in mid June, 2009 that they will finance two more athletes and this enabled the two reserves to be part of the team to Rome. Selection of the swimming team was based on the Fitness test results that were achieved at the National Squad camp in April, as well as other criteria which included: training records, a national squad member, ranking in Fiji Swimming in the various swimming events and more than 500 FINA points. There were four Swimmers selected from the Tritons Swimming Club coached under Eugene Panuve and Assistant Willie Elaisa and two swimmers from Barracuda Swimming Club coached under Elenoa Nagatalevu. The Head Coach, Maftoa Pene, informed the coaches of the successful swimmers, what was expected of the team and issued a MICRO plan to FSA. The swimmers were to train under their respective club coaches until the scheduled date of departure on 15 th July, Preparations at this stage included specific pool sessions focusing on their individual events. The Swimming team was requested to: attend the next National Squad Camp on the 19 th to 21 st June, 2009 in Suva; swim at the Schools Final competition and also attend a Medical assessment supervised by FASANOC. At the National squad camp the team attended a Physiotherapy and Nutrition session. Later in the week, the team was briefed on Drug testing and Anti doping and were also briefed on the H1N1 flu and provided with pamphlets and gloves. The final deadline for accreditation and individual entries was 1 st July, Club coaches had to ensure that they were made aware of their events, split aims and warmup/stretching routines and pre-race preparation. The Swimming Team members were closely monitored in Suva and Nadi. Families and Coaches were advised of their training schedules, attendance requirements, swim time requirements and travel itinerary. 1. Physiotherapy session 2. Learning about Drug Testing. 3. 5 Page 5 of The Teams Travel The Team s travel arrangements included a visit and pre-competition Swimming Camp at the City of Liverpool in the United Kingdom for one week period (16 th to 21 st July, 2009). The team then departed for Roma on the 22 nd July for the 13 th World Championships in Roma till the 2 nd August. Mr Dennis Miller was actively involved in organising the team travel arrangements. Visas for the United Kingdom and Europe were to be organised and there were some difficulties in trying to gain the visas in time for our departure but special written requests from Roma and Liverpool were sent to the relevantembassies. The team personally lodged their visa application at the British embassy. The Schenegan visas for Europe were lodged at the French Embassy. The team was insured in Suva with ACE Insurance Ltd New Zealand through AON Risk their local Insurance broker. The Suva based swimmers (except for Paul Elaisa departed Suva at 1pm (7 Seater 4WD) on 14 th July and spent a night in Nadi at the Rovas Apartment and the Thompson s residence. There was a farewell reception at the Thompson s Residence where Fiji TV interviewed the Swimming Team. We graciously thanked the Thompson family and Nadi Clubs for hosting a memorable event. The Swimmers received their uniforms from Mr. Ben Rova, the night prior to departure. The Swimming Team departed Nadi on 15 th July at 9.15am for Seoul (Korean Air) and arrived at 4.40pm the same day (10 hours 40mintues travel time). We spent one night in Seoul: Korean airlines paid for the overnight accommodation in Seoul inclusive of meals and transported the team from the airport to the Hyatt Regency. We checked out at 6.30am. We departed Seoul (Air France) at 9.20am and arrived in Paris at 2.25pm (12 hours flight). It took about 2 hours to pass through the French Immigration and then the team proceeded to the Jet Set counter. The team was in transit at the Paris airport for about 7 hours before checking in and there was a 1 hour delay. We departed for Liverpool (Jet Set airlines) at about 10pm and arrived at 11.30pm (1 hour 30 minutes journey). In Liverpool, we were picked up by Robert. Brimage a member of the Liverpool City Council who arranged our transport to the Liverpool Hope University where the team stayed till 21 st July. We departed Liverpool on the 22 nd July at 6.30am (Ryan Air) and arrived at 10.15am at the Ciampino airport in Roma. We were transported by coach to our destination which took about an hour. We departed Roma on 2 nd August via Seoul (Korean Air) at 10.45pm and arrived in Seoul 4.50pm on 3 rd August (a 12 hour journey). The team was transported to the Ramada Hotel in the city and meals and accommodation were covered by Korean Airlines. We departed on 4 th August at 6.30pm and arrived at Nadi on 5 th August (10 hours) at 7.40am.

Points to consider for future trips: The long journey and the time difference contributed to the team suffering jet lag. However the break in the journey at Korea and the one week camp at Liverpool allowed the swimmers to rest and recover from jet lag. Travel breaks in long journeys should be encouraged as it allows a faster recovery rate from jet lag. The travel arrangements were well organised. Though there was a 7 hour wait at the Paris airport, it was the only available flight that connected our flight from Korea. The flights and accommodation were reasonably comfortable. Fiji Swimming should consider providing a financial budget for future Teams to cover visa applications and meal allowances for the journey.

Page 7 of Liverpool Swimming Camp The training camp in Liverpool is as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) and the Northwest in December This is an agreement for Oceania to use the region as its training base in the build up to the London 2012 and beyond. Financial assistance was granted from FASANOC and the Olympic Solidarity. The Fiji Swim team arrived in Liverppol on 16 th July for a 5 day camp. Here, we had the opportunity to use the City s new Olympic 50m state of the art pool in Wave Tree to prepare for the forthcoming World Championship in Rome the following week. The Fiji and Palau team were given a civic welcome on Friday, July 17 th from Liverpool s Lord Mayor and Paul Deighton, Chief Executive of the London organising committee for the Olympic Games. 9. The Fiji Team with the Mayor of Liverpool and Paul Deighton and the Palau team Accommodation Liverpool was a pleasant 25 o C - a cool temperature for the Fiji team. The Team stayed at the 3 x 5 room flats at Hope University which was budgeted at approximately $F per person per day which included 3 meals, transport and training. The accommodation was very comfortable with phone, free internet access, laundry facilities and a TV room. The swimmers required extra fruit, drinks, snack bars because of their training schedules and this was covered as an extra personal cost. The accommodation was within close proximity to bus stops, supermarket and the city. 10. Our accommodation at the Hope University, Liverpool

Training and Preparation Schedule The Fiji and Palau swimming team trained alongside the Liverpool squad at least twice a day. The Teams used the various available facilities such as the gym, kinesis equipment, basketball court, track field and low impact room. Head Coach Maftoa Pene coordinated the land and pool training program and received assistance from Mike Roberts (Liverpool City Council Head Coach) at some pool side sessions. The facilities and equipment provided were high tech and valuable to the swimmers needs. 11. Mike Roberts with the Swimmers 12.Wavetree State of the Art Pool (Liverpool) 13. 9 Medical Support There was an international outbreak of the H1N1 flu at the time of departure so the swimmers were educated on the subject and received gloves and pamphlets. Douglas Miller who encountered an injury (knee infection and swollen leg) whilst on the way to Liverpool was admitted to hospital for 5 days. He was provided with expert health care service from the Royal Liverpool University hospital. The team had a session with a physiotherapist at the end of the camp to ensure there were no injuries. The Team was insured with AON Risk. Benefits of the Camp The swimmers progressed through their training even though they were suffering from jetlag for the first few days. The camp helped the swimmers to cope mentally and physically. The team bonded and supported each other throughout the camp. They were provided with encouragement and inspiration from the Liverpool Mayor, media and the Liverpool City council coordinators. The visit to Liverpool also provided exposure to the young swimmers and boosted their confidence. Head Coach Maftoa ensured that the team was provided with an efficient training schedule. Recommendations The City of Liverpool provides state of the art facilities, minimum distractions and a valuable training ground for major competitions. An organized training program should be set up with the coordinators so the resources available are fully utilised. It is recommended that Swimming camps overseas should be encouraged, supported and continuously organised for National Squads and Development team members. 20 8.0 Team Fiji Swimming Coaches Report. 13 th World Championships, Rome, July By Maftoa Pene SELECTION PROCESS: -Selection of Manager and Coach was confirmed officially by mail on the10th June. -The LC Nationals was used as the final trials. -Swimmers selected were members of the National Development Squad as monitoring is done here. -The team coach and manager should be involved in the selection process maybe in the preliminary stages. This was not done. WORLDS 2009 SWIM TEAM ENTRIES: -Preliminary entries were based on the fastest 2 swimmers per gender in consultation with the home coaches. -Final entries were confirmed on the 23 rd after the staging camp in Liverpool. Adjustments were made to Paul Elaisa and Douglas Millers entries as one had fitness issues due to hospitalization and the other had difficulty breathing due to a congested airway respectively. Their illness were on the 11 th hour and was not foreseen. -Both the male and females did not feature in the relays as they were 1 swimmer short. I would recommend that at least 4 per gender be taken in future to allow relay team entries. TEAM PREPARATION: Pre-travel -Coaches were advised of swimmers events and preparation requirements via on the 12 th of June. The Suva swimmers followed Douglas Millers preparation training program sent over by his coach, while the Nadi swimmers swam with me. National Squad Camp (20-21June) -The 6 swimmers showed signs of improvement in general fitness and stamina. Home coaches reported improvement in attitude towards training. Staging camp -During the flights from Nadi to Liverpool, entry interviews for each of the swimmers were carried out. Their goals, splits to achieve them, pre/postrace routines and likes/dislikes were documented. Basic rules were made known and the consequences if not abided by were highlighted also. Liverpool (16-23July) -Douglas Miller admitted to hospital because of an abrasion that was infected and starting to spread to the rest of his body. -Paul Elaisa had difficulty breathing on several occasions during pool sessions. - Swimming was done in the morning with light stretches and flexibility exercises done in the afternoon. This was done to accustom them to racing their best in the morning. -A physiotherapist visit was scheduled for the 21 st to assess their current form and advice on remedies. Pre-Competition (Rome) Venue familiarization (23 rd -25 th July) -Pool session at several 50m pools, including the competition pool was done as per the organizers timetable. Again these sessions were held in the mornings to further climatise with stretching session in the afternoon. -The swimmers were made aware of the 2 callrooms used for marshalling and the procedures to follow 20minutes prior to their event heats on Saturday the 25 th (designated rest day). SUMMARY 1-The team officials should be included in the preliminary selection process to allow technical input and insight to shortlisted swimmers. 2-Coaches to start gym weight session with older swimmers targeting stroke specific muscle strengthening. 3-I would recommend that the U13 IM squad qualifying criteria be relooked to encourage this age group to be comfortable swimming in any event and distance. A suggestion is to look at the New Zealand age group ranking system being used. This discourages the swimmers from specializing too early and selectors will have a pool of more versatile swimmers to choose from. 4-Coaches should not encourage poolside pacing during local competitions, particularly in distance events as this is not permitted at international meets. 5-Overseas competition with travel time exceeding 20hrs must be broken to ensure adequate rest and recovery time with a minimum of 1 week at the competing venue for time zone adjusting before competition. This could be an area to target during national camps. 6-Local competitions should be in the heats AM/finalsPM format as is the current practice internationally. 7- Excellent performance by Paul Elaisa who not only had a 100% PB average, but also broke 3 national records. 8-I am happy with the overall team performance (82.5%PB), their general behavior and attitude. Also thank their home coaches for complying with early stages of this team s preparations. 9-I would like to also thank the team manager, Lucy Erasito, for all her effort and time in making this tour a success. Her dedication to the teams welfare must be acknowledged. 10-Finaly I would like to thank Fiji Swimming for giving me the opportunity to guide a swim team at top level competition. Coach Maftoa receiving a gift from the team. An Inspirational Coach We must applaud Head Coach Mr Maftoa Pene for being an inspiration to the team. He illustrated dedication, commitment and patience. He developed and maintained a high quality swim plan and discussion with the team. Everyday he inspired the swimmers by allowing them to discuss their day and provided them with encouragement and always stimulated positivity. He was a coach with inspiration and values and always provided humor to the group. The team valued him highly as a Head Coach. A Coach highly recommended traveling with the National Team. We graciously thank him for a job well done

Page 25 of Team Managers Evaluation and General Comments about the Swimming Team and Competition World Championships (Brief History) The FINA World Championships was first held in 1973 and is now held every 2 years. Top swimmers from around the world use this event and their achievements from the championships as a stepping stone to the Olympics. FINA invites all countries to participate and provides financial assistance to developing countries to take part in this eventful and professional competition. The last World Championships was held in Melbourne in 2007 and the four Fiji representatives were: Carl Probert (32), Rachael Ah Koy (18), Caroline Puamau (26), Frances Nagatalevu (17). Were our swimmers ready for this competition? The 13 th World Championships in Rome was well represented by young enthusiastic swimmers. Though young and inexperienced in their exposure to a competition of high standard, the team handled the whole competition with determination. When you compare the 2007 and 2009 results, the young swimmers performed extremely well, considering they were all trained domestically within Fiji, all under Fijian coaches. The Swimmers who went to Rome were committed to their training, were focused and positive. We must also ask the question what is Fiji Swimming doing to prepare Swimmers for major competitions and what development program is implemented; are our squads based on the correct selection criteria? Is our competition calendar suitable for raising the standard of competitive swimming? These are some questions that warrant persistence. We need to provide more training camps and teach the Swimmers to be more independent and to be prepared for overseas meets. We should encourage Fiji s swimmers to communicate effectively with their coaches and other swimmers. The most important factor is to choose the team early rather then 4 to 6 weeks before departure to ensure effective preparation. Reserve Swimmers, Coach and Manager should also be selected. Why we should move forward It is important that we provide the path for development not only for these swimmers but for the upcoming swimmers and try our best to retain and train the swimmers so the results achieved will be of a higher standard at each competition. The results compared to other Oceania swimmers illustrates that countries like PNG and Tahiti have managed to hold on to the more experienced swimmers and at the same time introduce younger swimmers, which provides them with a wider talent base and, ultimately, better results. Fiji Swimmers should be exposed to overseas training, more overseas competitions and camps every year. Local qualified coaches and an effective support staff should also be provided with the opportunity to travel overseas and learn and be part of the support team during major competitions. It will be beneficial as it will provide experience. At the 13th World Swimming Championships there were opportunities for countries to send more coaches or officials according to the number of swimmers sent but this was self funded and about $150 euro per application. Fiji had 6 competitors so we were allowed 4 officials.

It was important to attend the FINA General Congress and the Team Manager s meeting held on the 24 th July as it provided valuable information about swimming. One such important topic that was covered was of a quality based coaching program to enhance the techniques and skills of our local swimmers and the upcoming changes to do with the sport and drugs. Each country was required to elect members to the FINA Bureau. Mr Dennis Miller (Fiji Swimming President) was elected. Swimmers Evaluation They learnt and enhanced the values of discipline, punctuality, staying positive and maintaining focus Request to be exposed to more overseas meets, as well as have more one on one and group discussions. The Swimmers felt they got support from the Coach and Team Manager, but at the same time felt they needed more support and preparation predeparture. Each night, the team had dinner together and had a general group discussion. This providing an opportunity for all to communicate and discuss events and experiences of the day and discuss any problems they may face. Also, feedback on their performances was provided, as well as constructive encouragement for the next day and this provided incentive. Team Managers Summary I would like to thank Fiji Swimming for providing this opportunity and experience at this World event. Team Manager and Head Coaches roles involve responsibility, patience, interaction, understanding and communication throughout the trip. We were fortunate that we were involved in the Swimmers affairs during National Squad camps, Competitions, other overseas meets and club functions, as we were able to communicate and interact effectively. I would advise anyone who wish to apply for these roles to first attend all the Fiji Squad Camps and learn to interact with all the Fiji Swimming Squad members and not restrict your role to your club members, speak to experienced Team Managers, Head Coaches and older swimmers who have participated in similar events. The trust from family members and updating them throughout the trip is also of vital importance. The trip is not a fun filled holiday but responsibility for swimmers from different clubs and it is a role that entails commitment and dedication. Every Overseas competition is a learning experience. The Fiji Swimming Team represented Fiji with Pride and determination. They were focused, committed and dedicated. They participated in a total of 40 events including distance and achieved 33 PB S i.e(82.5%) and four national records broken. The Swimmers participated in an Amazing race after the competition (The Roman Challenge) organised by Mr Terence Erasito. The Roman Challenge inspired the team to bond and to be privileged to be in Rome The team was divided into four groups of two and had to race around Rome visiting ancient sites and answering questions. First prize was given to the group who had the highest points. Prizes were donated to the team from Mr Erasito and Mr Dennis Miller. The Team appreciated the support and their achievements were recognised by family members in Fiji and abroad.

We once again thank the following: Head Coach Maftoa Pene for being dedicated, committed and inspiring the team Mr Dennis Miller Mr Terence Erasito Mr Ben Rova & Family Mrs Angela Probert Olympian Carl Probert Pitila and Chris Thompson The Tritons, Mako and Barracuda families FASANOC Eugene Panuve (Tritons Coach) and his Assistant Willie Elaisa- For coaching the team locally Elenoa Nagatalevu ( Barracudas Coach)- For coaching the team locally 28.
