Boulder Community Rowing 2014 Programs Document Amendments June 2014 Highlights and changes In response to feedback from members, the club will be making some changes effective June 23, Masters Nationals will be the target regatta for Racing 2. Masters Nationals is a great regatta, at which the club has had great results in the past. The regatta will be August in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Details are in the Sweep Racing Section on page - Experienced Sweep will go from three coached days to four. There will be a price increase, based on the prorated cost for the increased coaching. - Novice and intermediate sculling will be separate programs. Novice sculling will remain on Wednesday and Friday. Intermediate sculling will be on Tuesday and Thursday. Highlights and major changes for 2014 Club fees -For consistency and fairness to all members, program participants must pay membership and program fees prior to participating in a club program or using club equipment. Exceptions where membership is not required are Winter Erg, LTR, LTS, guest rowers and private/semi-private lessons. Extended payment plans are available contact the Treasurer. Members will also be required to sign that they have read and understand the BCR membership rules in addition to standard waivers before getting on the water in Late season practice times -In late season, water and air temperatures drop, sunrise occurs progressively later, and Boulder Reservoir opens later (no Lake Patrol). For safety of all rowers, the club plans to shift weekday practice times 30 min later beginning Monday, September 22, 2014 (start of Experienced sweep session VI). Program structure -Boulder Sprints 5 th consecutive year! Saturday, Jun 21 st 2014 mark your calendar now! -Assignments. Since assignments can change during the season, coaches and program coordinators are no longer listed in the Programs Document. Coaches and program coordinators will be listed at the BCR website. -Concurrent Learn to Row/Learn to Scull (LTR/LTS). LTR and LTS will run concurrently on five separate weekends during the season. This change is designed to enable more efficient scheduling of club volunteers and resources, provide students exposure to a broader range of club programs, and build club cohesion. -Competitive program. New for 2014, BCR has a Competitive committee and program to focus on fielding club teams for local and out-of-state regattas. Except for Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR), there are no pre-determined out of state regattas listed in this year s Programs Document. 1 P a g e Amended 6/21/2014

Instead, the Competitive committee will help rowers and coaches decide on regattas. -Advanced/Racing sculling. For 2014 these are combined into a single program. -Non-coached practices. To reduce costs, some programs will include some sessions without a dedicated coach. The program coach will provide workouts ahead of time for crews to follow. A certified BCR coach will be on the water during these sessions to meet safety requirements. These programs are identified below in program descriptions. -On-line attendance planning. The club plans to use an on-line app similar to TeamSnap for participants to indicate plans to attend practice, ahead of time. This is designed to simplify and improve practice planning, and allows more members to row. Details will be provided on the BCR website. -Private and semi-private lessons. New for 2014, BCR coaches have the option to contract directly with rowers to give private and semi-private lessons setting their own schedules and prices, using BCR equipment. All BCR safety and equipment rules apply. This is a change from the previous policy when members contracted all lessons through the club. Details to contact coaches will be posted to the BCR website. 2 P a g e

Boulder Community Rowing 2014 Programs Document 1. Winter Erg Programs Amended 6/21/2014 Late Winter Erg (Jan Apr 2014) You do not have to be a club member to participate in these programs. We encourage non-rowers to participate in the Fitness Erg program if they have interest to try the sport of rowing, or are considering signing up for either of the Club's on-water introductory programs (Learn to Row and Learn to Scull). Fitness Erg might also be of interest to former rowers who miss those winter workouts and want to re-join the sport. Late winter erg programs run in 4-week sessions. They are open to anyone with desire to erg in a group for general physical conditioning and/or improved skills. In each session, the coach will discuss goals with each participant and shape workouts to meet group goals. This program will provide a friendly and supportive environment for participants to maintain and improve rowing fitness in preparation for the upcoming season. Erg programs during Jan-Apr 2014 are held at Apex Movement, 3850 Frontier Ave, Boulder. Erg program fees include facility cost. Erg programs are designed to be self-supporting, with the goal that BCR members who do not participate in this program are not subsidizing participants. Erg program fees do not apply towards club membership. The Fitness erging program combines erging with core and strength exercises and individualized technique coaching. All seasons with a coach. The Competitive erging program is predominantly erging, designed to get participants ready for early season rowing and regattas. During some sessions the coach participates with the group to demonstrate pacing and technique. The coach provides a written workout ahead of time for all sessions, including non-coached sessions. (remaining sessions) Fitness: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 5:45-7:00am Competitive: Tuesday, Thursday 5:45-7:00am, Saturday 6:45-8:00am Fitness III: Mar 3 28 Fitness IV: Mar 31 Apr 25 Competitive III: Mar 4 29 Competitive IV: Apr 1 26 COST Program Fee: $65 per each 4-week session. 4 Learn-to-Row Five (5) Learn-to-Row (LTR) sessions are offered this year. The goal of LTR is to introduce individuals to the sport of sweep rowing. Each intensive session includes introduction to the boat and other equipment, safety on the water, rowing body mechanics and fitness. For those interested in pursuing rowing further, Novice programs are scheduled to follow LTR sessions. Potential LTR candidates will be specifically informed that rowing can be a strenuous sport and that they must be able to lift at least 50 lbs above their heads in order to help carry the boats. Due to the nature of the sport, participants must also sign a waiver certifying that they can tread water for 10 minutes and swim 200 yards. Program enrollment is capped at eighteen (18) participants per session. All five LTR sessions will run concurrent with Learn to Scull (LTS). Friday evening, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday mornings, 6:00 am-10:00 am. LTR I: May 2 4 LTR II: May 30 June 1 LTR III: June LTR IV: July LTR V: Aug COST BCR members: $125 per session. Nonmembers: $125 per session. Non-members who choose to join the club after their first LTR session and their first novice session will have 100% of the cost of their LTR and novice programs credited towards the annual club membership fee. This credit may be used either the current membership year or the year immediately following initial LTR class enrollment. Novice Program Novice program is open to anyone with the desire and physical ability to experience sweep rowing beyond LTR, and for rowers with previous experience who are returning to the sport at a basic level. The primary focus of Novice is to continue rowers introduction to the sport in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, build fitness without injury, and acquire a set of basic skills enabling them to advance. Each Novice session is four (4) weeks long. 5 CURRICULUM and PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS -Novice program concentrates on skill development through drills. This will include rowing technique, etiquette and vocabulary, equipment handling including carrying the boat safely, boat parts/terminology and correct foot stretcher/oar height placements. As soon as reasonable, training will end with 10 to 20 minutes of continuous rowing each day. -Embedded within each Novice session is coxswain training. All rowers in the Novice program will be expected to cox occasionally when dedicated coxswains are not available; the fair coxing guideline rotates program members to ensure coxing duties are spread across all rowers. Rowers will learn and practice coxing skills essential to ensure safety of the boat and crew during carrying, launching, steering and docking. Reasonable coxswain skills (sufficient to safely cox practice sessions) are required to graduate from the Novice program. -Novice is a great opportunity for a rower to build the skills they need for lifelong rowing in a team environment. General guideline is for Novices to stay in the Novice program for at least one (1) calendar year from the date of entry in order to establish a strong foundation before advancing. In rare circumstances, the coaching staff may advance a Novice rower early if the individual demonstrates strong fitness and accelerated mastery of rowing technique. -Novices have the unique opportunity to race in Novice categories for one (1) year after their first race. Experienced Program This group is open to anyone with at least Novice sweep experience who wants workouts to improve their skills and conditioning in a supportive environment. Designed to be the largest group with the broadest range of abilities, the Experienced program includes members of various levels of ability competitive rowers who cannot or don t wish to commit to Competitive programs; seasoned rowers who want a workout and technique training; and members who have recently graduated from the Novice level. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 5:30 am-7:00 am, Saturday 6:00 am-8:00 am (except Experienced VI) Each session is four (4) weeks long. Experienced I: May 5 31 Experienced II: Jun 2 28 Experienced III: Jun 30 Jul 26 Experienced IV: Jul 28 Aug 23 Experienced V: Aug 25 Sep 20 Experienced VI: Sep 22 Oct 18 (6:00 am 7:30 am all days) COST $65 per 4-week session $5 Drop-in rate (BCR members) Non-members may purchase Experienced program day rows for $16 per row. This is for rowers who do not wish to commit to a full BCR membership, including guest rowers from out-of-town clubs. Single day entrance to Boulder Reservoir is included in the cost of each row. Limit is eight (8) rows per calendar year for any individual. Experienced day rowers must give coaches notice before attending, and sign all waivers before their first row. 5 P a g e

CURRICULUM and PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS -Experienced combines fitness with technique for the development of more competent and fit rowers. Participants can expect their days to be a combination of rigorous workouts and technique building. Workout length and intensity will gradually increase over the sessions and the year, in response to both rowers input and to how well they are acquiring technique and building fitness. -Coaches will determine the best method for planning line-ups in one of three (3) ways. a) Coaches may request your rowing availability for the following week; b) Coaches may make line-ups based on who shows up that day to practice; or c) Coaches may use a combination of a) and b) as they see fit. -As much as possible, participants will be boated with others who share their goals for the row, as well as similar levels of fitness and skill. Depending on numbers the coach has some flexibility to place different focus on different boats in the same practice, e.g. drills and technique vs longer, steady pieces. Participants should recognize there are times when this arrangement cannot completely meet their individual goals. -Each Experienced session must have at least nine (9) participants (8 rowers and 1 coxswain, or 9 rowers). If there are less than nine, the Programs committee will evaluate the situation and coordinate with the coaching staff to decide on the best course of action to address the need for coaching and the challenge of a small number of participants. This may include combining Novice and Experienced sessions on some days, especially late in the year when numbers typically decline. If an Experienced session is truncated, rowers who want to pursue a different option will be offered a pro-rated refund for the remainder of the Experienced session. -In the event there are more boats than coxswain members participating in an Experienced session, the fair coxing guideline will be employed to spread coxing responsibilities around to all participants fairly. All rowers in the program are expected to cox if no dedicated coxswain is available. -Based on coach discretion and rower interest level, the coach may structure workouts to include elements of racing such as racing starts, and can train Experienced rowers for local regattas such as Boulder Sprints and Row the Rockies. -In general, rowers who wish to join the Racing Program must first develop in Experienced to continue building their skills and fitness to ensure greater success. The Experienced and Racing coaches will coordinate to decide when an Experienced rower is ready to advance to the Racing program there is no set timeline; an individual who expresses the desire to join Racing will be evaluated for rowing ability and fitness. In order to meet the needs of a sizable Experienced group with diverse skill levels coaches may have boats at multiple locations on the water simultaneously. This strategy will help maximize continuous rowing time, plus accommodate varying speeds of different types of boats (2-, 4+ and 8+) and rowers with various expectations and abilities. The coach may also coordinate with Experienced program participants who are qualified and checked out for sculling equipment, to have these rowers scull in order to maximize rowing opportunity for all participants. In this case the use of sculling equipment by Experienced rowers cannot interfere with sculling programs or other reservations to use sculling equipment. The Experienced coach will distribute his/her time between all Experienced boats to the best of their ability to provide equitable coaching and ensure safety of all participants. Sweep Racing Program Sweep Racing program is open to rowers who want to compete. Participation necessitates a more rigorous commitment of time, training and money than other BCR programs. However, for 2014 the club will put more focus on in-state and nearby regattas that are more accessible to all members, less expensive, and still offer quality racing opportunities. The program is split into three (3) main sessions plus HOCR add-on: 6 P a g e

1. Racing I runs May 5 June 20 and focuses on Boulder Sprints 2. Racing II runs June 23 to August 17 and focuses on sprint racing including Row the Rockies on July 12, 2014; target regatta is Masters Nationals in Grand Rapids, Michigan, August Racing III begins mid-aug and focuses on head racing; the group including coach will decide on one or more regattas 4. HOCR add-on runs approximately 2-3 weeks for club teams competing in HOCR. 50 th Anniversary HOCR regatta is Oct 18-19, 2014 The first day of each session will be an organization meeting only (no rowing). The coach and participants will discuss goals, candidate regattas including estimated costs per rower, line-up selection process, Race Captain selection, etc. Goal is to commit to specific regattas by the end of the second week (team meeting with coach). For regattas requiring overnight travel, travel and accommodations are the responsibility of each participant. Additional group costs for entry fees, equipment rental, coach and cox travel, etc. will be determined by the group. Members may choose to self-organize and participate in additional regattas, if it doesn t interfere with the Racing program. All BCR members are welcome to attend races throughout the year. Members rowing in Experienced or Novice who wish to race may arrange and pay for separate racing coaching outside of the scope of their programs. Any member can assemble a team to participate in any race with club equipment in accordance with club by-laws. However, Racing Program members receive first priority of equipment for target races once each Racing session determines those. Integrated racing programs coaching focus: Advanced/Racing Sculling and Sweep Racing may go out together on some days when they are both in session. The programs will get the same workouts on these days they are on the water together. Monday, Tuesday & Thursday, 5:20 am -7:00 am, Saturday, 6:00 am-8:00 am. (6:00 am 7:30 am weekdays beginning September 22) Racing I: May 5 Jun 20 Sprint racing Target Regatta: Boulder Sprints, Jun 21, 2014 Session is 7 weeks in length, with 7 allowed absences Cost: $135 Racing II: Dates: June 23 August 17 Sprint racing Target Regatta: Masters Nationals, August 14-17, 2014 Session is 8 weeks in length, with 8 allowed absences Cost: $150 7 P a g e

Racing III: Dates: mid-aug early Oct (exact dates to be announced) Head racing Length, number of allowed absences, cost to be announced HOCR Add-on: Dates: early Oct Oct 16 (exact dates to be announced) Head racing, HOCR focus Length, number of allowed absences, cost to be announced During the first week of sessions I through III, the program coach will confirm each rower s fitness and skill level are within the range of the broader group. If the program coach determines an individual rower s fitness or skills aren t sufficient for the group, they will not be able to participate and will receive a full refund for the program. Rowers who participated and raced in the previous session have the option to take off all or part of the first week of the following session for rest. In this case the first week s practices do not count towards the maximum absences. They must inform the Racing coach ahead of time if they elect to take rest the first week. HOCR is scheduled for Oct 18-19, 2014 near Boston, MA. Entry to this race requires winning a new entry in the selection lottery (late August/early September), or the BCR entry retained from 2013 HOCR (Womens Club 4+). The racing coach will determine which events to enter in the lottery and work with the HOCR Race Captain to place those entries. Members must inform the Racing coach no later than two (2) weeks prior to HOCR submission deadline of their interest to compete for a BCR programs HOCR bid either lottery or Womens Club 4+. The club will advise all members of this deadline via and website. BCR HOCR boat lineups will be determined during the first week of September when results from the HOCR selection lottery have been announced. Once the HOCR lineups are determined, the coach will balance the needs of the group as equitably as possible between HOCR, other regattas and any participants not rowing in the regattas when determining lineups for practice. CURRICULUM and PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS - Racing participants shall commit to rowing in the target regatta as a condition of participation. At the coach s discretion, additional members may be permitted to join the program without committing to the regatta. The number of such non-committed participants shall be limited to a number that does not reduce the amount of coaching available to the committed participants. -Attendance is required for Racing participants. If rowers choose to attend any regattas in addition to the target race(s) that the group decides to compete in, those days away count against the maximum number of absences allowed. -Because attendance is required for Racing rowers, rowers must communicate known absences or extenuating circumstances (e.g. injury, illness, family emergency, work travel commitment) to the coach as soon as possible. To enable the race coach to plan race lineups, all rowers are required to indicate their availability for the upcoming week to the coach via , phone or web, depending on coach's preference. -Each Racing session must have at least twelve (12) participants. If there are less than 12 participants, the Programs Committee will evaluate and decide on the best course of action to address the need for coaching and the challenge of a small number of participants. This may entail truncating the program, combining with Experienced for a portion of the time, and/or other solutions. If a Racing session is truncated, rowers who want to pursue a different option will be offered a refund for the remainder of the session. -The coach will provide a schedule of workouts for the program to participants early in the 8 P a g e

session. Each week will be comprised of technique and fitness workouts to meet the goal of building more proficient rowers ready for the races. -If Racing members choose to have a coach present at a regatta and subsidize travel costs in full or part, the coach will be responsible for specific duties, as outlined in the coach s contract. -Coxswains are an integral part of the race team and are expected to participate fully in the program, committing to the practices and races just like the rowers. Coxswains are not required to pay membership, coach or race fees. Coxswains pay for their travel costs unless otherwise arranged with the session coach and racers. -Race lineups will be determined by the session coach. This will usually translate into A, B, and C boats based on skill, speed, ability and age. Selection criteria for lineups will be established by the coach and made available in the first week of each session. Erg tests, rowing technique and seat racing may be used by the coach to evaluate rowers in determination of lineups. All rowers will be expected to participate. -Since head races are longer and there are fewer combinations of rowers and races compared to sprint races, head racing session rowers can expect to be boated more often in their racing configurations than in the sprint session. -The no ringer clause: Racers cannot be solicited from outside the Racing program unless discussed and agreed upon by the coach and racing members due to unusual circumstances (i.e. illness, injury). -One participant in each session will be designated as the Race Captain, who is responsible for organizing aspects of the race that are not the coach s direct responsibility. -BCR members are welcome to race independently from the Racing Program with several restrictions for limited entry races. If a race has limited entries and the race is one of the races sponsored by the Programs Committee, independent rowers may submit non-guaranteed (lottery) entries for any available slots after the Racing Program has determined its lottery submissions for the race. All guaranteed entries earned under the BCR name, whether earned by a racing boat or an independent boat will be available for the Racing Program to fill for the following year. If the Racing Program decides not to use a guaranteed entry, a self-organized crew may use the entry for that year. If more than one self-organized crew is interested in using either a non-guaranteed (lottery) or guaranteed entry that the Racing Program decides not to use, the self-organized crews will race each other to determine which crew earns the entry. If an independent crew wishes to retain control of their entry, they must race as unaffiliated or under another banner. The Racing Program coach is required to notify the club of planned entries within one week of the registration deadline. All crews must meet the rules and requirements of the regatta in which they are rowing in order to race under the BCR name. 3. Sculling Programs Special note on sculling equipment check-out please refer to the club equipment rules and procedures to reserve sculling equipment. BCR uses a tiered system designed to provide equitable opportunities for all qualified sculling members based on proficiency levels, safe equipment handling, and even equipment wear. Learn to Scull 9 P a g e

Five (5) Learn-to-Scull (LTS) sessions are offered this year. The goal of LTS is to introduce individuals to the sport of rowing as a sculler. Different from sweep, in a scull the rower operates with two oars instead of one. Boats range in size from 1x, for one person ( single ), 2x, for two people ( double ) and 4x, for four people ( quad ). Each intensive session includes introduction to the boat and other equipment, safety on the water, rowing body mechanics on an erg and on the water, and fitness. For those interested in pursuing sculling further, Novice sculling programs are scheduled to follow LTS sessions. Potential LTS candidates will be specifically informed that rowing can be a strenuous sport and that they must be able to lift at least 30 lbs above their heads in order to carry the boat. Due to the nature of the sport, participants must also sign a waiver certifying that they can tread water for 10 minutes and swim 200 yards. Enrollment is capped at eight (8) participants each session in order to ensure the coach has adequate oversight of all rowers on the water at all times. In addition, on Saturday and Sunday experienced club volunteers will be on the water in singles to demonstrate skills, or in a double with students to stabilize to boat as students build skills. In this program students will become familiar with the equipment used for sculling and begin to build a skill base, which will allow them to operate a boat independently. Upon completion of LTS, individuals who wish to continue to use BCR sculling equipment must pass the scull certification test that can be administered by the coach during the program. Please refer to the club rules regarding the two-stage certification process for equipment use. All five LTS sessions will run concurrent with LTR. Friday evening, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday mornings, 6:00 am-10:00 am. LTS I: May 2 4 LTS II: May 30 June 1 LTS III: June LTS IV: July LTS V: Aug COST: $175 (If you are not already a member and choose to join the club for the 2014 season and continue rowing, 100% of your LTS fee will be credited towards the cost of club membership for this year) Coached Sculling Novice Sculling Participants must have completed LTS or a similar introductory sculling program, or have prior sculling experience. In addition, each rower must be certified by a BCR coach to use a club boat without coach supervision. The days may vary in theme but will primarily be focused on technique rather than fitness. The number of participants per day is limited to nine (9). Each Novice session is four (4) weeks in length. 10 P a g e

For drop-in, contact the session coach at least one day prior to see if space is available. Beginning with Novice sculling IV, LTS graduates who want to join Novice sculling pay reduced club membership fees for late season. Rowers who have paid for the Experienced sweep program on Wednesday can sign-up up for the Novice sculling program at a reduced rate of ¾ of the Novice sculling fee. They may then row in either Wednesday program, if space is available required to check with coach at least one day prior to practice. Intermediate Sculling Participants must have completed Novice sculling or a similar sculling program, or have prior sculling experience. In addition, each rower must be certified by a BCR coach to use a club boat without coach supervision. The days may vary in theme but will primarily be focused on technique rather than fitness. The number of participants per day is limited to nine (9). Each Intermediate session is four (4) weeks in length. For drop-in, contact the session coach at least one day prior to see if space is available. Advanced/Racing Sculling The days may vary in theme but will primarily be focused on technique as well as fitness. A minimum of nine (9) rowers must participate for the program to be able to operate. Days will be dominated by moving work to combine technique with fitness in accordance with the needs of the group. Number of boats per day is limited to ten (10). The program will run 4 days a week; 2 coached and 2 non-coached. Participants are not required to race in a target regatta (since a single sculler does not impact a boat line-up if he/she decides not to race). In addition, there is no attendance requirement, but to get maximum benefit from the program each participant is encouraged to miss as few practices as possible. Rowers must be able to keep up with the main group in order for the program to function effectively. During the first week the coach will confirm each rower s fitness and skill level are within the range of the broader group. The coach may assign certain rowers to doubles on coached days to help keep the group together. If an individual rower s fitness or skills aren t sufficient for the group, they will not be able to participate and will receive a full refund for the program. Rowers will be provided workouts ahead of time for the non-coached days. The non-coached days are scheduled to coincide with sweep programs so at least one BCR coach will be on the water to satisfy safety requirements; however, participants also have the option to complete non-coached workouts on other days as long as they meet standard club and Boulder Reservoir safety requirements. Integrated racing programs coaching focus: Advanced/Racing Sculling and Sweep Racing may go out together on some days when they are both in session. The programs will get the same workouts on these days they are on the water together. Monday (coached), Tuesday and Thursday (non-coached), Saturday (coached) 5:30am 7:00 am (session III shifts to late season hours starting Sep 22 nd ) Advanced/Racing I: May 5 Jun 20 Advanced/Racing II: Jun 23 August 17 Advanced/Racing III: mid-aug early Oct (exact dates, cost to be announced) COST Advanced/Racing I: $115 Advance Racing II: $135 Four-day punch card, $75 (BCR membership required) Drop-in, $25 per day (BCR membership required) The punch card must be used for the session purchased. Program fee will be pro-rated. -All groups will have access to equipment, coaching, coxing and other resources based on the club's equipment policy. ( -Extra rows and additional water workouts can be organized by any member with or without a coach, provided they ensure their resource requirements do not conflict with other programs. Self-organized rows must comply to the club's Equipment and Safety Policies. -Sculling programs have priority for sculling shells. On any given day if there are sculling shells available that have not been reserved by a member, a sweep program coach may choose to use them. -If deemed necessary by a coach and/or the Equipment Manager, periodically (but generally not more than once every two (2) months) an equipment maintenance session will replace on-the-water practice. Sweep and sculling rowers may not have advance notice of this and will be expected to participate in needed maintenance activities. 14 P a g e
