3 WELCOME Welcome to the Table Tennis event at the Sainsbury s 2014 School Games being held at Manchester Tennis Centre, our ninth year involved in the games. Twelve sports, 1600 athletes and 600 coaches, officials and volunteers will be giving over 22,000 hours of their time to support the events taking place in Manchester over the next four days. This booklet is designed to supplement the Official School Games programme, to highlight table tennis specific items we would like to draw your attention to, and allow you to record team results. I would like to thank the team managers, team staff, referees, officials, welfare officers, athlete mentor, umpires and volunteers listed below, who put in a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes, many for months before the event, and who help make the competition run as smoothly as possible. I hope you all perform to your personal best, and have a great 4 days. 14 Quick Guide to Welfare This information is designed to support the Safeguarding Plan for 2014 which is available on the School Games website The primary aim of the plan is to minimise the risks to children and young people and to maximise their enjoyment at this unique event. This year we have twelve sports participating: athletics, badminton, fencing, gymnastics, hockey, judo, road cycling, rugby sevens, swimming, table tennis, volleyball and wheelchair basketball, plus disability events in a number of sports. Everybody involved in the Sainsbury s School Games has signed a Code of Conduct which identifies our expectations of behaviour throughout the event. Each sport has a dedicated Welfare Co-ordinator and a Welfare Officer, whose role is to support the welfare athletes and young people involved in the event. The welfare team is managed by the Welfare Manager, Helen Murdock from the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU). Table Tennis contacts Welfare Co-ordinator Judy Rogers (m) Welfare Officer/s Jennie Bouron (m) Use of the Initial Issue/Concern Reporting Form What should be reported? The welfare of the child is paramount throughout the School Games. In order to achieve this principle you are asked to complete an Initial Issue/Concern Reporting Form, available from any member of the welfare team, for any issues/concerns, accidents or incidents no matter how trivial they might appear. This may be about any child or adult involved or spectating at the School Games and could include: o General concerns about a child s welfare o Concern related to a welfare incident e.g. bullying or poor practice o Suspicions or allegations of misconduct o Breaches of the School Games Code of Conduct o Abuse made by or against any young person or adult at the School Games o An injury Please complete the form and pass to any member of the welfare team. If you would like further details of what should be reported please refer to the Safeguarding Plan Reporting. To discuss a specific concern or issue please contact either Judy, Jennie or the Welfare Manager for the School Games. Page 12
