KGRV CHRISTIAN RADIO AM-700 Reaching a 130-mile radius from Roseburg PAGE 2. Table Tennis Rules for Ichthus event on 4/22/17 What you need to know to play a fun game of ping-pong THE paddle RACKET The racket blade shall be flat and rigid. At least 85% of the blade by thickness shall be of natural wood; an adhesive layer within the blade may be reinforced with fibrous material such as carbon fibre, glass fibre or compressed paper, but shall not be thicker than 7.5% of the total thickness or 0.35mm, whichever is the smaller. A side of the blade used for striking the ball shall be covered with either ordinary pimpled rubber, with pimples outwards having a total thickness including adhesive of not more than 2.0mm, or sandwich rubber, with pimples inwards or outwards, having a total thickness including adhesive of not more than 4.0mm. The blade, any layer within the blade and any layer of covering material or adhesive on a side used for striking the ball shall be continuous and of even thickness. The surface of the covering material on a side of the blade, or of a side of the blade if it is left uncovered, shall be matt, bright red on one side and black on the other. The racket covering shall be used without any physical, chemical or other treatment. Slight deviations from continuity of surface or uniformity of colour due to accidental damage or wear may be allowed provided that they do not significantly change the characteristics of the surface. Before the start of a match and whenever he or she changes his or her racket during a match a player shall show his or her opponent and the umpire the racket he or she is about to use and shall allow them to examine it. DEFINITIONS A rally is the period during which the ball is in play. The ball is in play from the last moment at which it is stationary on the palm of the free hand before being intentionally projected in service until the rally is decided as a let or a point. A let is a rally of which the result is not scored. A point is a rally of which the result is scored.
PAGE 3. A player strikes the ball if he touches it in play with his or her racket, held in the hand, or with his or her racket hand below the wrist. A player obstructs the ball if he or she, or anything he or she wears or carries, touches it in play when it is above or travelling towards the playing surface, not having touched his or her court since last being struck by his or her opponent. The server is the player due to strike the ball first in a rally. The receiver is the player due to strike the ball second in a rally. The ball shall be regarded as passing over or around the net assembly if it passes anywhere other than between the net and the net post or between the net and the playing surface. The end line shall be regarded as extending indefinitely in both directions. THE SERVICE Service shall start with the ball resting freely on the open palm of the server's stationary free hand. Do not hold it pinched between your fingers! The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 6 inches after leaving the palm of the free hand and then falls without touching anything before being struck. As the ball is falling the server shall strike it so that it touches first his or her court and then, after passing over or around the net assembly, touches directly into the receiver's court. From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden from the receiver by the server s opposite arm or by anything they wear. As soon as the ball has been projected, the server's free arm and hand shall be removed from the space between the ball and the net. If, in attempting to serve, a player fails to strike the ball, his opponent gets a point. It is the responsibility of the player to serve so that the umpire can be satisfied that he or she complies with the requirements of the rules are being met in a correct manner. If either the umpire or the assistant umpire is not sure about the legality of a service he or she may, on the first occasion in a match, interrupt play and warn the server; but any subsequent service by that player which is not clearly legal shall be considered incorrect. WE WILL REPEAT THIS IMPORTANT ASPECT: At start of serve, the ball must be above the level playing surface and behind the server s end line. Lastly, server must stand behind the table, not out on sides! THE RETURN The ball, having been served or returned, shall be struck so that it passes over or around the net assembly and touches the opponent's court, either directly or after touching the net assembly.
THE ORDER OF PLAY PAGE 4. In singles, the server shall first make a service, the receiver shall then make a return and thereafter server and receiver alternately shall each make a return. Request for TIME OUT: only one 2-minute time out per player will be allowed during the 3 game match. Requests may only be made by player when ball is out of play ; made by T-hand sign. A LET The rally shall be a let if in service the ball, in passing over or around the net assembly, touches it, provided the service is otherwise correct or the ball is obstructed by the receiver or his or her partner; if the service is delivered when the receiving player is not ready, provided that neither the receiver attempts to strike the ball. if failure to make a service or a return or otherwise to comply with the Laws is due to a disturbance outside the control of the player; like if a stray balls flys into area. if play is interrupted by the umpire or assistant umpire; like he hears a cracked ball or if there is a failure in the net, posts or table. If after touching the receiver's court, the ball returns in the direction of the net and ball come to rest on the receiver s court thus it can not be reached to make a return. If there is any sign of blood or physical damage is being done to the table. Play may be interrupted by referee: to correct an error in the order of serving, receiving or ends; to introduce an emergency that requires immediate action. to warn or penalise a player or adviser; because the conditions of play are disturbed in a way which could affect the outcome of the rally. A POINT Unless the rally is a let, a player shall score a point if an opponent fails to make a correct service; if an opponent fails to make a correct return; if, after he or she has made a service or a return, the ball touches anything other than the net assembly before being struck by an opponent; if the ball passes over his or her court or beyond his or her end line without touching his or her court, after being struck by an opponent; if an opponent obstructs the ball; if an opponent deliberately strikes the ball twice in succession; If an opponent s body (other than their free hand) touches the playing surface. if an opponent, or anything an opponent wears or carries, moves the playing surface; if an opponent, or anything an opponent wears or carries, touches the net assembly;
PAGE 5. A GAME COMPLETED A game shall be won by the player first scoring 11 points unless both players score 10 points, when the game shall be won by the first player subsequently gaining a lead of 2 points. PLAYERS SHALL CHANGE ENDS OF TABLE AFTER EACH GAME IS FINISHED> A MATCH PLAYED A match shall consist of the best of 3 GAMES to 11. THE ORDER OF SERVING, RECEIVING AND ENDS The right to choose the initial order of serving, receiving and ends shall be decided by the Referee flipping a coin! The winner may choose to serve or to receive first OR he may choose to start at a particular end of the table. When one player has chosen to serve or to receive first or to start at a particular end, the other player shall have the other choice. After each 2 points have been scored the receiving player shall become the serving player or pair and so on until the end of the game, unless both players score 10 points or the expedite system is in operation, when the sequences of serving and receiving shall be the same but each player shall serve for only 1 point in turn. The winning player is to report their Victory to the official Bracket keeper. OUT OF ORDER OF SERVING, RECEIVING OR ENDS If a player serves or receives out of turn, play shall be interrupted by the umpire as soon as the error is discovered and shall resume with those players serving and receiving who should be server and receiver respectively at the score that has been reached, according to the sequence established at the beginning of the match. If the players have not changed ends when they should have done so, play shall be interrupted by the umpire as soon as the error is discovered and shall resume with the players at the ends at which they should be at the score that has been reached, according to the sequence established at the beginning of the match. In any circumstances, all points scored before the discovery of an error shall be reckoned. The Expedite System will not be used in this year s tournament play. Remember, Players shall remain in or near the playing area throughout their match period EXCEPT with the permission of the attending Referee. If player is released to meet an emergency, every effort will be made to resume play ASAP. It is the hope that the tournament may be completed in a timely manner. KGRV requests that all finalists report for their play-offs by no later than 4:45pm at UVCS GYM. It is the plan to start demo play with audience at near 5:00.
EXTRA NOTES: PAGE 6. A set is when one of the players or pairs first score 11 points. In the event that both players/pairs score 10 points, a set is be won by the first player to gain a 2-point lead. A full match is won when a player wins the best of three (3) games OR two games in a row! In singles play, the center lines serve no purpose, so ignore them. The edges of the table are part of the legal table surface, but not the sides. All players are expected to practice their serve so that it is done legally. According to the Laws of Table Tennis, the net clamps are part of the net assembly, not the playing surface. The net assembly shall consist of the net, its suspension and the supporting posts, including the clamps attaching them to the table. This means that if a ball goes over the net, but then hits the net clamp on the opponent's side of the table, it still hasn't hit the opponent's side of the table yet. It must bounce off the net clamp and onto the opponent's court before the opponent can attempt to hit the ball. A ball that hit the net clamp and the opponent's side of the table at virtually the same time would be considered a legal return, and the opponent must try to return the ball before it bounces again. PRACTICE PERIODS: Players are entitled to practice on their match table for 2 minutes immediately before the start of their match but not during normal intervals. It is the responsibility of the player to check the quality of their equipment and clothing (shoes tied) before the playing time begins. Referee shall check the condition of balls before the start of each 11 point game. ADVICE: players may only receive advice from one coach during the 2 minute rest period between their 3 games. The referee shall have power to disqualify a player for seriously unfair or offensive behavior. Penalty flagged: Referees shall hold up a red-colored card to signify that a violation has been waged against a player. A warning will be given on first occurance and a subsequent violation shall result in one point awarded to the opponent. Our Referees shall sit or stand five feet away from the side of the table as to view the table net. KGRV Christian radio will supply snack foods and soda pop along with waters. At 6:00pm, KGRV will follow the Winner s playoff matches with a Christian movie entitled This is Different with a love offering taken at $5.00 per person. All proceeds will go to the Christian Motorcyclists Assoc. who are raising fund to gift Enduro-type motorcycles & show the Jesus film in 3 rd world countrys! For any questions, please phone KGRV Radio at Do not phone UVCS as they are not a sponsor of this Tournament.
