Report from the President The Hong Kong Tennis Association Limited (HKTA) has, as the national body for the sport in the HKSAR, served the Hong Kong Tennis Community since the beginning of the 20th century, we have on record documented results going back as far as The main objectives of the Association are : - To provide a tennis culture for those persons throughout Hong Kong who wish to play, whether at a social or competitive level, we work hard at creating and maintaining an environment that will enhance the development of the sport. - To promote tennis for all by organising training courses for local participants and tennis tournaments at local and international levels. - To ensure that the standards of the game are of an internationally acceptable level by maintaining close collaboration with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF). We wish to see our talented players competing at an International level, to achieve this we employ international coaches and ensure that our local coaches are well trained so that the training programmes run by the Association are of the highest possible standards. Last year was highlighted as the Year of the Ladies, and in 2006 our ladies have continued to make good progress. The Federation Cup team of Tong Ka Po, Venise Chan, Geraldine Leong and Sher Chun Wing travelled to Korea in April to play in the Asian Zone group II competition. The team did extremely well, they won all their matches without losing a single set, they finished first in the Group and were thus promoted to Group I for The girls continued with their good work. Venise Chan reached a high of 24 in the world on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) world rankings, Zhang Ling reached 35 and Jessica Yang 88. As of the end of October we had 14 girls and 9 boys ranked in the ITF World Junior rankings. This is probably the highest number of ranked players that Hong Kong have ever had at any one time. The girls also performed well at the senior level. On the Womens Tennis Association (WTA) rankings Venise has, in one year, risen in the rankings from zero to a high of 487 in the world. Zhang Ling our number two junior girl now has a WTA ranking of 736 and Jessica has just achieved a ranking of 1068 in the world. We are hoping for great things in the future from these young ladies. Our other top lady Polly Lam Po Kuen is currently ranked at 815. It would be impossible to achieve these goals without a great deal of hard work and dedication from many people. The HKTA Council and the Chairpersons and members of the various committees all volunteer their valuable time to ensure that these objectives come to fruition. I am very happy to report that most of the 53 targets that we set ourselves in December 2005 have been met, with only a handful still in progress. 2

Report from the President Continuing with good results from the girls, the Junior Federation Cup team once again upset the pundits and finished 4th in Asia and thus qualified for the World Group Finals in Barcelona for the second year running. They had some good wins in Barcelona however the competition was extremely tough with some very strong teams from all over the globe. They finished number 16 girls team in the world a very satisfying result when one considers the number of children who play tennis in Hong Kong compared with the top nations in the world. Coaches Education and Licensing To ensure that good quality coaching is available to anyone who wishes it the Association have introduced a coach certification scheme. For tennis to excel in any country we are aware that the coaching must be of a high and constant standard. Our coach certification scheme, which is conducted by experts from the ITF has been in existence since October 2002 and has been paramount in improving the level of our local coaches. This has proved to be an extremely popular move, many Hong Kong coaches have taken part in this certification scheme and we have a waiting list of coaches who wish to improve their abilities at all levels. Courses are held at the Advanced, Developmental, Elementary and Mini tennis levels. We are also offering refresher courses for those coaches who have held certificates from previous courses held in the past. We must not forget our men s team event the Davis Cup. The first tie in the Asia Oceania Zone Group II event was held at Victoria Park in February. The team of Captain Derek Ling, Manager Jeremy Pong and their team of Yu Hui Tung, Wayne Wong, Martin Sayer and Michael Lai played very well and resoundingly beat the team from Pacific Oceania to set up a second round tie against our old adversary Indonesia. The Tie at Victoria Park was especially satisfying as there were over two thousand people in the stadium cheering on the team. It was a great experience for everyone. The next tie was held in Indonesia and unfortunately, as has happened in the past, we were narrowly defeated by the home team. A chance to avenge that defeat has now arisen as we meet Indonesia on home territory in February 2007 in the first Zone group II Tie. Hopefully our home crowd can pull the boys through for the first ever defeat of the Indonesian team. In April 2003 a coach licensing scheme was implemented, and there are now over 250 coaches registered and working around Hong Kong many of them on HKTA programmes. The objectives of this scheme are to protect the interests of the public and to classify the ability levels of qualified coaches in Hong Kong. It also provides local coaches with an opportunity to upgrade themselves and develop further skills with a continuous educational system of organised seminars, clinics, forums and workshops. This year courses have also been held to update coaches who may have received qualifications in the years prior to the commencement of the licensing scheme. Tennis in Schools The HKTA have a long history of encouraging tennis in schools. Together with the popular yearly Prince Primary Schools Mini Tennis Promotion Scheme, the Mini Tennis Badge Scheme, and the LCSD/HKTA School Sports Promotion Scheme the joint programme has in the past year provided over 560 mini tennis courses and 90 tennis courses to thousands of school children in the HKSAR. These tennis activities in the schools not only create a breeding ground for talented players but they also promote a healthy lifestyle through sport and provide a recreational sport for life. Tennis has been promoted to over 180 schools in Hong Kong during the past year. 3

Report from the President Community Tennis The HKTA is very supportive of community sports development and in partnership with the LCSD work hard to encourage the growth of Community Tennis Clubs (CTC) and help with their formation, operation and development. Currently there are 31 CTCs in the eighteen districts in Hong Kong, the HKTA assist these clubs in running leagues, arrange tennis training courses, officials training courses and numerous other related activities. Training for Excellence Under the guidance of the HKTA Elite Committee the Talent Group (TG) that was formulated in January 2003 has gone from strength to strength, we now have a total of 90 children training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) and at the Hong Kong Tennis Centre (HKTC). This group will be increased in early 2007 by the addition of a TG at Causeway Bay. These talented juniors are discovered by various means; some are selected from HKTA Junior Squads, some come from open assessment days, some are players who have good results from tournaments, and others from other coach recommendations, in fact any player who looks like he or she is worthy of inclusion into the Talent Group are given the opportunity to join this Elite Squad. The players receive intensive training from well qualified and experienced overseas coaches and are given tournament exposure both locally and internationally. The National Training Squad (NTS) are our top juniors, a group of children that will be representing Hong Kong at the yearly ITF team events and in ITF Junior Ranking Tournaments. These are players that will in the future be competing for Hong Kong in the Davis Cup, Federation Cup, All China Games, Asian Games and our dream, one day a player good enough to represent Hong Kong in the Olympic Games. One of the things that we continue to emphasize to all our juniors and team players is the Squad/Team concept as we try to instil into the players a sense of unity, and personal pride. Players from China The pilot undertaking of the importation of talented young female players from China has been very successful, two girls Zhang Ling and Jessica Yang Zi Jun have both attained good results during the past year and are dedicated to the sport. The Association will continue to look for talented players not only in China but also in our neighbouring countries and of course the search for local talent is unending. 4

Report from the President Tennis for All One of the most popular tennis programmes organised by the Association is Tennis For All. The HKTA have been aware for years that it is necessary to ensure that good quality lessons are available for anyone who wishes to learn to play tennis or to further improve their skills. These classes are available for anyone of any age at various skill levels. Corporate training courses are also available. The Association organise regular tennis classes at 14 venues in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories and during the past year over 3,300 players have participated in these courses. HKTA Tennis Training Centre The Association is continuing to negotiate with the government regarding the acquisition of the tennis facility at Kowloon Tsai Park to be used as a HKTA tennis training centre. The setup and facilities there would make an ideal base for tennis training and the HKTA have many plans to turn it into a first class facility. Having our own tennis facility that can be used for elite training and other HKTA programmes has been a dream of the HKTA council members for many years. It is hoped that the HKSAR Government recognises this need and fulfil its expected role to facilitate the development of tennis in Hong Kong. Officiating Members from the officiating team have served at over 67 different events in Not only do our officials work at all the HKTA Tournaments the Association provide officials for many organisations that requests them for their club or company events. There are many different levels of tournaments, ranging from professional events such as the Watsons Water Challenge to Junior Series Tournaments and LCSD district events. Because of the large number of officials that are required, the HKTA organises numerous training courses throughout the year. The HKTA also encourages the local officials to obtain ITF officiating qualifications. Promising officials are sent by the HKTA to attend courses that are held in Asia. There are currently 15 officials with ITF Badges and over 180 active officials. International Relationships In August; I along with the General Manager of the Association attended the International Tennis Federation AGM in Seoul. During the AGM we had many chances to exchange views with representatives from many nations and were impressed with the presentations made by the various delegates and ITF staff. Many changes are coming to the tennis game both at the professional and developmental levels. Future ITF plans in the next few years will certainly be very exciting for our game. The ATF AGM was held at the same time and this gave the opportunity to meet with other Asian delegates and discuss the development of tennis in Asia, especially the work that is being done for the 2008 Olympics in China. Another hot topic was the Asian Games being held in Doha in December It is expected that these Games will be the best attended games ever and the Qatar government are doing a great deal to ensure that all the facilities including those for tennis will be superb. Together with Members of the Executive Committee I have also visited the Chinese Tennis Association in Beijing during the year to discuss several matters related to tennis in Hong Kong and China 5

Report from the President National Ranking System The National Ranking System (NRS) is running smoothly. The Association are always encouraging our affiliated clubs and the community clubs to run sanctioned tournaments thus increasing the number of tournaments that players can participate in to improve their rankings. The South China Open and the CRC Open go from strength to strength and I must congratulate these clubs for their success. In 2007 a new event will added to the Tournament calendar the Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club Hong Kong Tennis Masters Cup and a Parent & Child doubles event. The proceeds from this Parent Child event are to be donated to the HKTA, our grateful thanks to the Club. HKTA Homepage The HKTA official website ( is a very popular and well visited site. In 2006 we have started to add Chinese content and eventually it will be a completely bilingual site. As well as a myriad of articles covering all aspects of tennis in Hong Kong, there is information about all tournaments in Hong Kong including schedules, draws and updated results, League results, rankings, a photo gallery, offers to members, and updates of on going activities. New sections are constantly being added and articles are updated daily. The site is often visited by persons from outside Hong Kong as confirmed by messages that the HKTA receive from all around the world. Membership Services We are continually upgrading our service to members with benefits for members constantly being sourced. Benefits in 2006 included special offers for many different items including sport and travel gear, dining offers, and discounts on many retail and service items. Looking Ahead Despite the loss of the excellent training facilities at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, we are looking forward to an exciting We are anticipating that our juniors will continue to get good results, and that our Davis Cup team and our Federation Cup team will perform well in their zonal ties. We will continue to offer training courses to all talented juniors, broaden our participation base and continue our search for new talent both in Hong Kong, China and Asia. The training squads will be expanded as required and new venues included if necessary. The Elite programme s Talent Group and the National Training Squad will be enlarged and improved as more talented juniors are sourced. The Association will continue to strengthen its ties with the tennis community in the Mainland, and look for means of closer collaboration at all levels. Our goals of having our own tennis training centre is getting closer to being realised and our desire to bring world class tennis to Hong Kong is being pursued, and of course we wish to ensure that anyone in Hong Kong who wishes to play tennis will be able to do so. Acknowledgements I would like to express my sincere thanks to our patron s, sponsors, the LCSD, the Home Affairs Bureau, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, the Hong Kong Tennis Foundation and the Hong Kong Sports Institute for their support. It has been a very good and productive year for Hong Kong Tennis and I would like to mention my hard working colleagues on the Hong Kong Tennis Association Council, the members of our various committees, the HKTA s hardworking staff, and the many volunteers that help during the year, to these persons my sincere appreciation and grateful thanks, without your help none of our achievements would have been possible. 6

Report from the President Obituary During 2006 we lost two very illustrious figures from the Hong Kong tennis scene. Dr. Henry Fok I was deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Henry Fok last month, a dear family friend and a mentor to me in life. An ardent supporter of tennis for the past 40 years, Dr. Fok was the Honorary Life Patron and a generous benefactor to the Hong Kong Tennis Association. His contribution towards the development of Hong Kong tennis was immeasurable, and in his death Tennis Hong Kong have lost a true friend who had deep concern for the welfare of our sport. My memories of Dr. Fok go way back to the competitive days when I was a young aspiring player. I can recall losing in competition to him. Arriving in the tennis scene late in his sporting career, Dr. Fok and his partner Tau Luu were the underdogs in the match. Yet through sheer fight and resolve, the Fok-Tau pair not only defeated us but went on to win the tournament. Dr Fok was seen at, and supported most professional tennis events in Hong Kong. Many top players in the world enjoyed his hospitality at sumptuous banquets held in their honour at Dr. Fok s show piece mansion in Pokfulam - the Stone Manor. I can still picture the players faces when they were shown and allowed to hold the solid gold tennis ball that Dr. Fok proudly owned and displayed. Dr Fok was also was a great supporter of the Hong Kong Davis Cup team and sponsored many functions for the visiting players, as well as himself coming to the courts and cheering the teams on and presenting souvenirs. He was a fervent believer in the Corporate Patron League, a most popular event in the HKTA tennis calendar that fosters exchange between corporations and government bodies in Hong Kong. Not only did Dr. Fok sponsor this event for the past 14 years since its inception, he also played for the Yau Wing Company team for many years. In 1994, during the AGM of the International Tennis Federation held in Hong Kong, Dr. Fok was honoured with the ITF Award for Services to the Game of tennis. A well deserved accolade shared by some of the world s great tennis players and administrators. Dr. Fok s fervour for tennis continued until his very last days. It was only recently that he was forced to stop playing due to his deteriorating condition. A great legend, he will be sorely missed by thousands of us, not only for his benevolence but also as a friend and supporting pillar of Hong Kong Tennis. Mr. Ip Kung Hung The Association were very sad to learn of the death of Mr. Ip Kung Hung in April this year. Fate brought tennis and this gentlemen together as his love for the sport motivated him to continue competing for many years and his raw talent made him into a Hong Kong tennis legend. All this young man had at the time when he started was a simple wooden racquet, a stray ball he found from the side of a court, and a dented wall to hit against. With these bare essentials, hard work and a natural gift for the sport, he went on to win a staggering 53 local majors, the most by any player in the history of Hong Kong tennis. His achievements speak for themselves. At the Hong Kong National Grass Court Championships, he won fifteen Men s Singles crowns ( 47, 49-52, 59-64) and ten Men s Doubles ( 50-52, 54-55, 58-59, 61, 63-64). At the Hong Kong National Hardcourt Championships, he won ten Men s Singles titles ( 49, 52-53, 55, 58-60, 62-64), eight Men s Doubles ( 49, 53-55, 58, 62, 65, 67), and nine Mixed Doubles, the first six with his wife ( 49-51, 54, 56, 58, 60, 63, 65). He will always be known as the true pioneer for Hong Kong tennis. His achievements speak for themselves - he has won the most championships in Hong Kong s history, racking up a staggering fifty-three titles - 26 in singles and 27 in doubles. He even went on to play at the hallowed courts of Wimbledon, reaching the final of the Plate Competition in Commanding an excellent serve, the best in Hong Kong during his time, great approach shots and precision volleying, his greatest asset of self-belief, he ruled Hong Kong tennis during his heyday and has become a true legend in the history of the sport in Hong Kong. He will be sadly missed. Kenneth Tsui President Hong Kong Tennis Association 7

Executive Committeee 2006 President Mr. Kenneth TSUI Immediate Past President Dr. Philip KWOK Honorary Secretary Mr. Joelle HO Honorary Treasurer Mr. Jeremy PONG Vice Presidents Mr. Henry CHAN Dr. David HO Dr. Leung Lap CHI Member Mr. Vincent LIANG, JP Secretary Mrs. Janet HARDISTY Year in Review The Executive Committee (EXCO) works at consolidating the directives of the HKTA Council, and acts on its behalf in between Council meetings. This year has been very busy and the Committee has met on average every 5-6 weeks with intervening businesses attended to by the President and the Hon. Secretary. Major activities in 2006 include Working with the various committee chairs and departmental managers to prepare and adopt the HKTA Annual budget for 2006/2007 and the yearly plan for 2007/2008. In the year plan, budgeted activities and expenditures were laid down in detail; financial control has been exercised in a prudent manner accordingly. Having regular meetings with the General Manager of the HKTA to ensure that all programmes organized by the HKTA follow the guidelines set by the Executive Committee, and the various committees. The General Manager helps the members of the Executive Committee fulfill their duties and liaises with the LCSD, the HKSI, the International Tennis Federation, Government departments and other sporting bodies on a day-to-day basis. The operation of the HKTA is divided into four main streams: coaching, development, tournament, and corporate affairs and administration. Each department has a competent manager and staff who report to the General Manager, communication and co-operation is good. Our relationship with China and the Chinese Tennis Association continues to expand. The President and other members of the Executive Committee have visited the CTA offices on several occasions during the past year. In April the President was invited by Tennis magazine in China to give a talk at the Tennis Public Appraisal of China conference in Beijing. The President accepted the invitation and gave a very successful presentation on tennis in Hong Kong, its history, recent developments and accomplishments, this was reported in several Chinese publications. Enriching the local pool of juniors by bringing in talented players from China has proved to be a great success and the identification of talented juniors is ongoing. The Chinese Tennis Association is being very helpful with this issue. The two girls that came across to Hong Kong two years ago are highly motivated and have achieved good results at both the junior and senior levels, these girls have proved to be good role models and have also spurred the local juniors on as witnessed by the vast improvement in Venise Chan s game since they arrived here. Several scouting exercises have been carried out on the mainland in the past year and some talented juniors have been identified. Negotiations are currently underway to train more children from China to eventually represent Hong Kong. Dependant on the ages of these children they will either come to Hong Kong for training or will be trained at a training camp just across the border and will make periodic visits to Hong Kong until they are of an age to legally enter the territory. The Association will continue to nurture local juniors as well as recruit talented juniors in China with the aim of improving the chances for Hong Kong to win tennis medals. 9

Executive Committeee 2006 Meetings have continued in 2006 between members of the Executive Committee, Executive Staff, the Victoria Park management and the LCSD regarding the upgrading of the tennis facilities at Victoria Park. The offices under and around the Centre Court are to be completely renovated to a standard suitable for running professional events, including the East Asian Games. Work will commence in spring 2007 and should be completed in one year. The tennis courts no. 1-9 on the east side of Victoria Park are also eventually to be relocated to the handball court adjacent to Centre Court. It is expected that this work will probably commence late The courts will be laid before the existing courts 1-9 are removed thus saving any loss of court facilities for the public. The Association are still negotiating with the government regarding the acquisition of the Kowloon Tsai Tennis Courts for use as a dedicated tennis training centre. It is hoped that by mid 2007 this will all be resolved and by the start of the tennis season in September 2007 the Association will have their own facilities. The Tennis Elite programme will be moving with other Elite sports in December 2006 to Wu Kai Sha YMCA village. This site has been upgraded for use by the Elite athletes during the takeover of the Hong Kong Sports Institute for the Equestrian Olympics in The move from HKSI has not only uprooted the HKSI Tennis Elite programme but also the Hong Kong Tennis Association s numerous National Squad Training Programmes that were carried out at the HKSI. Because of this move Exco members and executive staff have had many long meetings with LCSD and the Home Affairs Bureau to come to an arrangement on alternative sites. At the moment of writing, the programmes that were conducted at the HKSI will now take place at Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon Tsai Park and Causeway Bay courts. This is not the ideal solution as it fragments the programmes, however when we eventually do get the Kowloon Tsai Park training facility the programmes can all be reunited Other discussion have been held to discuss changes, improvements and rebuilding that can be made for tennis facilities on the HKSI site after the Olympics are completed. A close dialogue has been maintained with the International Tennis Federation. In August the President and the General Manager attended the AGM held in Korea and met with many delegates from around the world, including the President Mr. Ricci Bitti who had visited Hong Kong in 2005 and was very interested in hearing of our recent accomplishments. The Asian Tennis Federation AGM was also held in Korea during the same period and this created an opportunity to meet with other Asian representatives, exchange ideas and discuss our mutual problems and successes. The HKTA are still actively exploring the possibility of bringing a professional tennis tournament back to Hong Kong. A great deal of interest has been shown by many people and we are targeting 2008 as an ideal time for this project. The Executive Committee are aware that one of the Association greatest problems is keeping our best players in the game and available to represent Hong Kong at international team events and multi sport games. The top players tend to leave Hong Kong and go to college in the USA, once they start their education at the colleges the Association are then at the mercy of the colleges whether they will allow them to return to represent Hong Kong in events such as the Davis Cup and Asian Games. Because of this the Exco is working closely with the Education and Qualifications Committee to find ways to encourage juniors to continue to play tennis at a high level and at the same time acquire an education. Seminars for parents have been held during the year when experts from local and overseas tertiary educational institutes came and talked about various options for the parents. Research is also being carried out by the Committees to look into options for universities in Hong Kong offering scholarships to our talented juniors. 10

Coaches Development Committee 2006 Chairman Mr. Derek LING Vice Chairman Mr. Ricky CHAN Members Mr. Kenneth TSUI Mr. Joelle HO Mr. Jeremy PONG Mr. Cyril LAU Mr. Robert SMITH Mr. Stan TAMURA Mr. LAI Kwai Cheong Mr. Bronson FUNG Mr. Venant SHUM HKTA Staff Mrs. Janet HARDISTY Mr. Benny LIN Ms. Mona CHOI Mr. Eric CHUNG Secretary Miss Prima LEE Year in Review The Coaches Development Committee s attention has been firmly focused on upholding and improving the coaching standards in Hong Kong, this is especially evident in the continuous professional development programme for coaches, which has a demanding agenda of coaches workshops and clinics, as well as educational forums and seminars. These workshops are organised to expand the opportunities through which our coaches can further enhance their knowledge, and to furnish them with the proficiency that is required to stay at the forefront of the coaching industry. The Committee has worked tirelessly to pursue its duties of raising the level of public recognition and interest of HKTA s certified coaches and to enforce the Coach Licensing Scheme with the Education and Qualifications Committee. Highlights of the year included three workshops entitled respectively Tiny Tot Tennis: Making it a FUN-tastic experience, Junior Tennis: An alternative approach to training and Physical Conditioning: How to get the most out of your jell ball presented by ITF Development Officer for Asia, Mr. Suresh Menon, the coaches clinic conducted by Srichaphan Thankorn, Thailand Davis Cup Team Captain 2001/2006 and the coaching workshop conducted by renowned ITF coach, Jacques Hervet of France. The overall response from the local coaching ranks and other HKTA members to these workshops has been extremely positive. In 2007 we will continue to bring renowned professionals to Hong Kong to further increase our coaches training opportunities, and to assist them in their efforts to acquire higher level coaching qualifications. Development of coaches in Hong Kong through the provision of appropriate education and support programmes is essential to ensure the future success of the game in Hong Kong. 12

Coaches Development Committee 2006 Workshops and Seminars The workshops and seminars play a vital part of the strategy deployed by the Committee to improve the overall quality of coaches in the territory. In 2006, the Committee has organised 14 workshop/seminars featuring renowned speakers from overseas tennis federations and professionals from the Sports industry in Hong Kong. In November 2006 we invited Mr. Srichaphan Thanakorn, Thailand Davis Cup Team Captain 2001/2006 to host a clinic at the Sports Institute in Hong Kong. Major topics of his presentation included Mental and emotional components of tennis, Bringing out the best in a player and Showing your desire as a coach. Continuing with last year s series of tennis strength & conditioning courses that were so well received, we were pleased to have Mr. Sam Li who is the lecturer of Sports Training & Training Science at IVE with us again in March and May to share his views on Muscular Training for Tennis and Speed and Response Training for Tennis. Officers from the Auxiliary Medical Service gave a very interesting talk on how to handle cases of heat exhaustion and injuries to bones and joints. In addition to organising various workshops for the coaches, the Committee has involved participating coaches in the evaluation process through which coaches feedback would be collected at the end of the each workshop and forwarded to the Committee for review. By engaging the coaches in the evaluation process, the Committee has been able to create a more in-depth understanding of the needs of the coaches and deliver value added workshops in the coming year. We also organised a workshop entitled A preview of Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in Indonesia enabling the coaches to take a closer look at the preparation work of the Hong Kong Team with the Team Captain Mr Derek Ling prior to the team departure to Surabaya, capital of East Java in March. In 2007, the Committee will start the new year with an exciting workshop in Guangzhou where the coaches will be able to visit the Tien He Sports Centre, Guangdong province team training centre and the major tennis facilities in the region. The Committee will continue to make significant strides in delivering a continuous quality development programme for the coaches in Hong Kong. 13

Coaches Development Committee 2006 Coach Education In October, the Committee made recommendations for 2 coaches, Daniel Lee and Eric Chung to attend the 13th ITF Asian Regional Coaches conference in Thailand. The Committee are very grateful to the HKSI for providing a subsidy to enable these coaches to attend the conference. Some of the world s leading tennis coaches and sports scientists were there to present topics on the most upto-date information relating to high level tennis training and performance. The Conference also provided an opportunity for 150 participating coaches from the region to meet and exchange ideas. Coaches Benefits Our sponsorship programme for licensed coaches continues to expand to include more sponsorship benefits offered by well established sports companies in Hong Kong. In addition to the insurance coverage for all tennis lessons provided by our licensed coaches, each coach is entitled to receive a free Dunlop sponsorship package which includes two tennis rackets, one thermal bag and a 25% discount card for purchasing Dunlop tennis equipment. As well as this coaches can receive a single problem physiotherapy session at the Hong Kong Health and Rehabilitation Services for only $150. In 2007 we hope to further expand these sponsorship links and increase our support to the coaches. Online Coaches Registry The electronic Coaches Registry serves a multitude of purposes as not only is it a unique way of introducing our coaches, it also helps to raise the profile of our team of HKTA-certified coaches by increasing the options and choices of qualified coaches available to the general public. The Registry is now in its third year of operation and has effectively served in promoting our coaches to the members and to the tennis public as additional information has been inserted on the online coaches profiles, such as year of coaching and work experierce to facilitating people s search. The Committee will continue to work to ensure that tennis community has quick access to coach information and our coaches profile, and to educate end users of the advantages of learning from qualified coaches. This Registry plays an important role in realizing the HKTA s goal of enhancing the general playing standard in the territory. Coaches Library The Committee will continue its endeavor of improving and expanding the HKTA Coaches Library by sourcing essential publications, DVDs and videotapes from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and well-established tennis companies and academies in order to facilitate the continual development and upgrading of coaches in Hong Kong. We will constantly add resources to the library to enable our coaches stay abreast of the latest issues and developments in the world of coaching 14

Development Committee 2006 Chairman Dr. LEUNG Lap Chi Members Mr. Kenneth TSUI Mr Joelle HO Mr. Henry CHAN Mrs. Diana WONG Mr. KK CHAN Mr. Derek LING HKTA Staff Mrs. Janet HARDISTY Ms. Mona CHOI Mr. Eric CHUNG Secretaries Miss Prima LEE Miss Aby KWOK Year in Review In 2006 the Committee continued to deliver the developmental programmes successfully with increased participation recorded in almost every development programmes organised. This is largely due to careful management and cost effective measures that were employed throughout the year for all development activities. By implementing effective strategies for the Junior Tennis Development there is a clear focus and sense of purpose to our work, which will enable us to identify talent and deliver our programmes in a more effective and efficient way. Our schools programmes go from strength to strength. We have again succeeded in making great progress in terms of propelling the development of school tennis on a territory-wide basis, with approximately 13,700 primary and secondary students that participated in the Schools Sport Promotion Scheme in 20005/06; not to mention making significant inroads in introducing the sport to the community and the corporate sector through a number of tennis initiatives. The Leisure and Cultural Service Department (LCSD), the Hong Kong Tennis Foundation (HKTF) and the Hong Kong Tennis Association (HKTA) have been working well in partnership to increase participation across all sectors to fulfil our task in broadening the base of tennis participation in the territory. In 2007, we will continue to explore channels to promote the community participation in tennis, and ways to foster partnerships with different sectors for the promotion of community sports, in particular the educational sectors, the district offices and the non-governing organisations in the community to promote tennis-related activities and create a sustainable sporting culture in Hong Kong. 18

Development Committee 2006 HKTA Junior Squad In 2006, the number of training centres has increased from 10 to 13. Over 350 teenagers have been given the opportunity to participate in this well structured programme under the supervision of our experienced HKTA licensed coaches at various venues. The HKTA Junior Squad has long been the breeding ground for aspiring young tennis talents. It is the HKTA s vision that through the Junior Squad we will build up a broad base of tennisplaying youngsters in Hong Kong. The Committee has also worked closely with the Task Force led by Mr. Daniel Lee to continue exploring innovative strategies for improving the effectiveness of the training programmes for players at all levels in the HKTA Squad Training. A Player Promotion Handbook, which includes pre-printed certificates for coaches signatures, was distributed to all players at the beginning of Players can record their progression in the Programme and report their achievements in tennis to their parents, teachers and counterparts. As of October 2006, there were 210 players, 105 players, 36 players training in the Foundation Squad, Development Squad and Potential Squad Certificate respectively in this Programme. The ultimate goal of the HKTA Junior Squad has not changed, the aim is for the Junior Squad to continue to grow and serve as the major channel through which budding talents are selected to join the HKTA Talent Group for more intensive training. International Tennis Number The ITN has proven to be a good tool for encouraging more people to play tennis and it has integrated perfectly into our development strategies to act as an indicator for testing the ability of players. The ITN is universally seen as a system that can unite tennis players under a common rating language and facilitate the movement of all levels of players between Squads. It is designed on a noncompetitive base and is suitable for players at all levels to help measure their standard and improvement. In 2006, we continued to hold ITN Challenge Days on a monthly basis enabling the tennis public to understand their game better under the ITN evaluation system. As well as this we have also introduced ITN to the community clubs creating extra excitement in the community groups. We expect that the potential of the ITN will be further realized in various activities aimed at facilitating the promotion of the game in the near future. Mini-Tennis Mini-tennis plays an integral part in our curriculum with respect to junior development, and primary schools represent the perfect backdrop to implement the concept of mini-tennis. In addition to being a challenging recreation for youngsters and beginners, mini-tennis is a good indicator towards spotting aptitude for the game and is a useful tool in cultivating children s interests in tennis. Mini-tennis also offers a unique opportunity to encapsulate the benefits of adopting a healthy, sporting lifestyle that can run parallel to school work, and generates a valuable prospect where parents can actively be involved with their children s extracurricular activities through sports. 19

Development Committee 2006 Inter-schools Tennis Competition The HKTA is in its third year of organizing the Annual Inter-Primary Schools Tennis Competition, consisting of 4 regional competitions and a grand master championship. Since its inception in 2004, the HKTA recorded the highest number of participants in 2006 with over 420 primary school students playing in the competitions, and we are optimistic that the number of participants will grow further next year. This is another concrete step we have taken to further popularise school tennis in the territory. Badges and Certificate Award System Building on the success of the Mini Tennis Badge & Certificate Scheme, the Scheme has attracted many more students this year wishing to acquire the badge of their respective levels. Over 1400 children were presented with Gold, Silver or Bronze Badges under this Scheme. Tennis in Schools The HKTA/Prince Primary Schools Mini Tennis Promotion Scheme and the Schools Sport Programme (SSP) continued with its success in With the support of LCSD and Prince approximately 15,000 young school children have been given the the opportunity to play tennis at school and to compete in inter-schools mini tennis/tennis competitions. Credit should go to the schools principals, to the devoted teachers who have worked with the HKTA for many years and to the HKTA licensed coaches. Community Tennis In line with the HKSAR Government s directive for wider public participation in sports and in order to create a strong sporting culture, the HKTA has worked closely with the LCSD to promote tennis to local communities. A total of 31 community tennis clubs are now affiliated with the HKTA, the highest number of community clubs among all sports in Hong Kong. In collaboration with the Federation of Community Tennis Clubs (FCTC), the HKTA also promote various tennis initiatives such as ITN through the network of Community Tennis Clubs to the tennis community. It is our hope that by increasing the opportunities for community tennis to flourish, the overall tennis population may also grow to envelop that of the community and grassroots sections of our society. 20

Development Committee 2006 To promote the concept of Tennis-For-All and to popularise tennis in the community, the HKTA offers regional tennis and mini-tennis training programmes for adults and juniors across the territory. Divided into Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Levels, these Tennis-For-All training courses and other courses under the Regional Mini-Tennis Training Scheme focus on increasing the accessibility of tennis across the community. Overseen by HKTA-licensed coaches in order to safeguard coaching quality, courses have been designed to accommodate progression of advanced players as well as to accommodate those who wish to enjoy the game merely as a recreational activity. To encourage teenagers to make better use of their summer vacation, and to expand the exposure of tennis to youngsters, the ever-popular Hong Kong Tennis Stars of the Future Programme once again kicked off in July. First inaugurated with the blessing of Asian-American tennis star, Michael Chang, the programme has for years attracted thousands of newcomers to the game of tennis. In 2006 approximately 830 fresh new faces have picked up a tennis racquet for the first time, all of whom will hopefully, in time, learn to appreciate the time-honoured virtues of tennis and come to embrace it as a sport for life. HKTA Corporate Tennis Training Scheme In addition to providing tennis training programmes at the community level, the HKTA also caters to the corporate sector in Hong Kong. This scheme offers tailor-made and budget-priced tennis courses for players of all ability levels, taught by HKTA-licensed coaches. Corporations have the option of choosing their preferred time slot and venue, and the scheme s flexibility and cost effectiveness make it an ideal sporting activity for the hectic lifestyles of today s business executives. Corporations and other institutions that have signed on with the HKTA Corporate Tennis Training Scheme in 2006 include Reuters Hong Kong Ltd., Hong Kong Tourism Board, Bank of America, Jardine Sports Association, POAD Group Ltd. and Amway Hong Kong Ltd. 21

Education and Qualifications Committee 2006 Chairlady Mrs. Diana WONG Members Mr. Henry CHAN Mr. Ricky CHAN Mr. Andrew LEE Mr. Derek LING Mr. SIN Kim Wai Mr. Peter WAN HKTA Staff Mrs. Janet HARDISTY Ms. Mona CHOI Secretary Miss Prima LEE Year in Review In 2006, the Education and Qualifications Committee (EQC) has continued to work closely with the Coaches Development Committee towards the objective of raising the general standard of coaching in Hong Kong. Regular reviews have been conducted to evaluate the ITFendorsed HKTA Coach Certification Scheme thus ensuring that the need for quality coaches and certified coaches is met. The Committee has also focussed its efforts on taking proactive approaches to implement the Coaches Licensing Scheme which allows coaches to further upgrade their coaching skills and enhance their coaching standards. The Committee has participated in regular meetings with the government and clubs to pursue its duties in implementing the Licensing Scheme, Despite the challenges that exist, the Committee has achieved what it set out to do in raising the number of licensed coaches. The HKTA has seen a 60% increase in the number of licensed coaches in November 2006 reaching a total of 260 coaches in the Scheme. In addition, the Committee has been endeavouring to assist in the development of tennis players in ways and means in addition to those supports rendered on the tennis court. Two seminars entitled Education opportunities for elite and pre-elite players were successfully organised in early These events not only enabled the HKTA to develop a close working relationship with the local universities, but also allowed the parents to obtain information on scholarships schemes available for our junior players in Hong Kong. ITF-endorsed HKTA Coach Certification Scheme The EQC is totally committed to making continuous improvement to the coaching standards in Hong Kong. We have maintained a close working relationship with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and professionals in the field by seeking their views and expertise to support the growth of our Certification Programme. Since it s inauguration in 2002, Mr. Jacques Hervet, an ITF Programme Expert from France, along with Ricky Chan, our local tutor, have been contributing immensly to the programme design and implementation. During the past five years, the HKTA has successfully conducted 10 Mini- Tennis Instructor Courses, 15 Elementary Coach Courses, 8 Development Coach Courses, and 1 Advanced Coach Course. 28

Education and Qualifications Committee 2006 HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme Initiated by the EQC, the HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme serves to provide quality benchmarks to assess the overall standard of coaches so as to provide a formal recognition for the coaches; safeguard the interests of the tennis public and to implement a continuous professional development programme for coaches in Hong Kong. The four-level licensing scheme comprises Advanced Level (CL-3), Development Level (CL-2) and Elementary Level (CL-1), as well as Mini-Tennis Instructor Level (MT), providing different levels and paths for progression. All coaches employed by the HKTA to coach in its training courses must hold valid HKTA licences. This year, the Committee took a bold step in collaborating with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) to promote the Licensing Scheme to the coaches working on the LCSD community tennis training programmes. The EQC organised a seminar for the LCSD coaches in October 2006 at the Hong Kong Sports Institute where they introduced the objectives of the Licensing Scheme and how it has helped coaches in Hong Kong to keep abreast of the latest coaching know-how and technology in the game of tennis through education. We are very grateful for the support rendered by the LCSD and expect to continue to work closely with them to achieve more success in future. It has been four years since the Scheme was launched in 2003, over 80% of the licensed coaches successfully renewed their license in 2006 for a further two years by gaining the prerequisite credit points for their respective license. While the Committee is very satisfied with this high retention and growth rate of the Scheme, we continued to examine ways to further promote the Scheme. The Committee decided to open the license application for the whole year enabling the coaching candidates to join the Scheme as soon as they are certified in the Certification Programme. We expect that the Licensing Scheme will continue to serve effectively in assisting coaches to make continuous improvement and giving the public benchmarks for assessing the overall quality of coaches in Hong Kong; and we anticipate enrolment under this scheme to further increase in the coming few years. HKTA Education Initiatives In exchange for the players contribution, their undeniable achievements in the development of themselves as players, and their efforts for the development of tennis in Hong Kong, the HKTA offers - support in relping them to securing scholarships at schools, colleges, and universities in Hong Kong and other countries. It is our aim to assist high calibre tennis players to study at colleges or universities that provide a quality environment for academic excellence and at the same time allowing them to develop their tennis talent. In 2006, the HKTA has been relentless in their efforts to assist players in applying for scholarships for universities. The two strategic partnerships with the University of Miami Online School and the Laurel Springs School have continued to facilitate the provision of online education to a number of our best junior players. We firmly believe that it is a worthy cause and successful partnerships like these are essential for the development of players and the grooming of produce excellent sports leaders in the longrun. In early 2006, the HKTA also organised two seminars for parents and players with purpose of passing on the importance and benefits of keeping a good balance between tennis and school. At these seminars some of our outstanding players shared their experiences with the parents and players. In 2007 the Committee will continue to seek out new channels to improve its educational service for players, and to collaborate with local and overseas schools towards providing additional assistance to our junior players. Finally, the HKTA will liaise with other national sports associations to petition to the Education and Manpower Bureau to adopt a more sportman friendly policy. 29

Elite Committee 2006 Coaches Clinics The HKTA is also working towards bringing worldrenowned experts and coaches, such as Jacques Hervet and Suresh Menon of the ITF, to Hong Kong to conduct clinics specifically for the Talent Group and NTS players. More excitement was brought to the training this year by the appearance of Thanakorn Srichaphan. During the 5- day visit, Thanakorn was able to meet with our TG and NTS players, share his valuable coaching experience with our coaches and of course regale the children with stories of his brother Paradorn. NTS/TG Summer Tour to Spain 18 players participated in a 4-week tour of Spain during the summer. The tour was definitely a productive and beneficial one for our players due largely to the fact that most of the matches were played on clay courts which presented unique opportunities for them to further develop both their technical skills and their mental toughness. In every training and match, the players were challenged seriously to think harder and fight like a warrior, and at the same time they learnt how to play with patient and creativeness. Our coaches were extremely impressed with the improvement of the players and how they grew on and off the court over this period. The Elite Committee will continue to seek opportunities to send our juniors to play on different surfaces in order to enrich their playing experience and improve their physical and mental strength. Taiwan National Junior Championships, Kaohsiung, Taiwan During the New Year holidays, our coach led a group of 4 players to Kaohsiung, Taiwan to compete in a number of national singles and doubles tournaments against some of their best counterparts in Taiwan. Our players thoroughly enjoyed this trip, as this was a unique opportunity for them to play and compete on clay courts. Our team arrived one week before the competition and held a weeklong training camp to learn the intricacies of playing on clay. As there are no clay courts in Hong Kong, this trip was even more crucial to their overall tennis development. After the trip was concluded with many practices and matches under their belt, our players now have a much better understanding of playing effectively on clay courts. It was an extremely rewarding trip and the Committee is looking forward to seeing our players to compete in this event in January

Elite Committee 2006 Guangzhou & Shenzhen Interport Matches Friendly matches were arranged with the Guangzhou Provincial Sports Institute in Hong Kong, which took place during the second week of August. Our coaches led a group of 13 to compete in a number of singles, doubles & mixed doubles matches with their mainland counterparts. Our players were thrilled to display their talents in a match-type situation and made many new friends. With the improved quality of Chinese players, our players will certainly benefit from more of these similar trips. The HKTA organised another Interport Matches in late October at Shenzhen Fuk Tin Tennis Centre in Shenzhen allowing our players to play intensive tennis for two days. A review of the matches indicated that our players have improved consistently and matched up very competitively, managing wins over some of the top juniors in the region. The team members were extremely supportive of one another and their behaviour was good. The players have all benefited enormously from these Interport Matches as not only have they improved their tennis skills, match play and fitness, but they have grown into more mature youngsters and have learnt a significant amount from their experiences. 49 Officiating Committee 2006 Chairman Mr. Jeremy PONG Members Mr. Gary AU-YEUNG Dr. Edward HARDISTY Mr. Charles LAU Mr. Derek LING Mr. Philip MOK Mr. Venant SHUM Mr. Rob SMITH Mr. Horace WONG Immediate Past Chairman Mr. John SHAW Hon Secretary Mr. Joelle HO President Mr. Kenneth TSUI General Manager Mrs. Janet HARDISTY Secretaries Ms. Allison LEUNG Miss Sylvia LAU Year in Review Officiating plays a very important role in the modern era of tennis. A high standard of officiating is essential for the improvement and development of the game, whether in professional or non-professional tournaments. The Officiating Committee (OC) has set out to provide and to maintain a high standard of officials to serve tennis tournaments organized or sanctioned by the HKTA. We believe in continuous learning and improvement so this year the committee ran seminars and tests for all officials to ensure they maintain the required level of competence. Our focus on officiating standards this year is to improve the standard of roving umpiring and only those who passed the test can work in tournaments as roving umpires. A new grading scheme was adopted to give officials a grading for each classification of work based on their performance, this grading will be evaluated continuously throughout the year. We have provided umpiring services to no less than 66 events, ranging from the three major local tournaments the Hong Kong National Tennis Championships, the SCAA Open and the CRC Open to a number of corporate, district, junior tournaments and competitions throughout the territory. Umpires Training Course One Level 1 Umpires Training Course, was held at the Victoria Park, and Olympic House in July this year. This is the entry level training course for new recruits who want to be officials. 50 successfully passed the course and 30 of them have already chaired a number of matches in tournaments. Upon completion of the minimum 20-hour on-court work and subject to satisfactory evaluation of their on-court performance, they will be recommended to become Level 1 officials-chair and Linesman. Currently, we have 180 active officials with Level 1 qualification. ITF Officiating Training Derek Ling and Jeremy Pong, were nominated to attend an ITF Level 2 Officiating School Referee held in July in Bangkok, Thailand. They both passed the course and are now certified ITF white badge referees. 48

YUEN General Manager Mrs. Janet HARDISTY HKTA Head Coach Mr. Benny LIN Tournament Manager Ms. Allison LEUNG Secretaries Miss Cindy TAM Miss Sylvia LAU Year in Review One of the most important elements in tennis is competition. Competition drives the sport. It is for this reason that most people enter the sport and continue to play. Players determination to practice is to improve their level in competitive play. Our aims are to organise more tournaments for players of different levels, and from these players to select the teams to represent Hong Kong in major games and competitions. During the year the Committee organised additional competition especially targeting our junior players, thus providing them with more opportunity to practice and to gain tournament experience. We have specified that the Novice competitions are for beginners and that the Junior Series for more experienced players. This way we have separated the experienced and non-experienced players between the Series and the Novice and it has been very successful with the parents accepting this division. This year we had over 200 new beginner players who participated in the Junior Novice Competition. Community Tennis We continued to organise events for the districts to enable more players of different levels to participate and as has been the case in years past, the ever-popular Federation of Community Tennis Clubs League and the Hong Kong Districts Tennis Circuit attracted thousands of local players. ITF Group 4 and 5 Junior Circuit Tournaments The Committee organized two International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit Tournaments in Hong Kong, one Group 4 and one Group 5 ; thus giving our best junior players aged 18 and under an opportunity to participate in an international tournament in their own environment, and to encourage them to improve or gain an ITF Junior World Ranking. Hong Kong National Tennis Championships Hong Kong National Tennis Championships is one of three Major Tennis Tournaments in Hong Kong. The tournament was held at Victoria Park during March/April.
